mcsweeney. and i )m anoushah rasta. the news starts right now. thank you for joining us. >> we begin with breaking news this hour. san francisco police searching for aldon smith after a domestic violence incident. it's the latest legal trouble for the player. >> we broke details of the investigation on our twitter feed less than an hour ago. >> reporter: here's what we know. the san francisco police department was called out to this neighborhood, the 600 block of bush street last night around 8:30 p.m.mentioned, this was a domestic violence call. the video is of a prior court

appearance. so far the san francisco police have not released many details about the nature of what's alleged to have happened to prompt that domestic violence call last night. aldon smith was not there when police arrived. detectives are still with the department's special victim's unit are still trying to locate him. in a statement released today by police, they're hoping he'll actually contact them now. this is not the first domestic violence investigation that smith has been in. in february of last year the then-suspended oakland raiders linebacker was questioned for a separate incident. smith started with his career with the san francisco 49ers in 2011, but he was released from the team in august of 2015 after being arrested for suspicion of dui hit-and-run and vandvandali. at that time it was his fourth arrest and third dui with the 49ers. smith is still on extended suspension from the nfl and had

been hoping to be reinstated last year after that first domestic violence investigation. right now we're still trying to find more information about last night's domestic violence call. as we mentioned, we first broke details of the investigation on our twitter feed. we're going to be updating the story all night as more information becomes available. now to our other top story, the weather. a live look outside where after a week of stormy weather it is a beautiful day across the bay area. from san francisco to palo alto to san hejose, a clear day. but dangerous conditions are possibly looming. >> right now we're really enjoying some of those clearing skies in san francisco. still a few clouds and brief sprinkles on the hill tops east of san jose.

the story tonight, those clearing skies. runoff away from the hills or places that did see snow could be icing up in spots for tomorrow morning. use caution. look out for some patchy mountain roadway ice at times for tomorrow morning. what a story we've seen in the sierra. we've seen 50 to 100 inches of snow in just the last few days. as good as those numbers look, the reality check in terms of where we are to date still not all that great. we had low snow levels and relatively dry snow. snow pack at about 40% of average. you'd have to see about six more storms to get caught up with the sierra snow pack. not great odds. but the views are amazing. there's yosemite. we'll let you know when we do expect more snow and for rain to make a comeback in our seven-day

forecast. waltter officials hoping tomorrow's snow pack survey will have better results. the last survey about a month ago snowed the snow pack at just 14% of historical average, which was actually an improvement over the december measurement. thanks to the recent snowstorms lake tahoe is looking perfect today. skiers and snowboards are taking advantage of fresh powder. according to the snow report at homewood, more than six feet of snow fell in the past week. >> as always, you can download our nbc bay area app to get up to the minute micro climate weather coverage. click on the weather tab to get the forecast. standing with the students of parkland, local students in the east bay held an event to raise money for victims of that school shooting. this comes days before a national walkout.

>> reporter: these young people were out in the park here for hours raising money and talking about what they would like to see in terms of gun control. they say after the shooting in florida, they could no longer stand by. at a park , students brought ou posters and t-shirts to make signs. >> after the shooting in parkland, we were all really shocked. we hate how school shootings are being treated as if they're inevitable in our country, because they're not. this is our way of doing something about it. >> i just donated to the folks here. >> reporter: they raised $1500 for the victims of the school shooting. >> i think common sense gun laws are really important. >> reporter: she says her

cousin's best friend was killed in the parkland school shooting. >> this affects so many real people real families. >> reporter: this as senator diane feinstein expressed optimism after remarks from president trump at a meeting on gun control. but there hasn't been firm movement in washington. in lafayette last week, emotions ran high. >> why don't we look at the root of the problem and find out why people are doing this instead of blaming gun owners? >> it's not just about california. it's a national problem. this is our way of being part of this national conversation. >> reporter: today, a spokesperson for the school district sid in a statement that they support the students' right to free speech. their statement, their safety and their critical role in how they move forward on this very important issue. he also shared a message that he says was shared with their school community about potential

demonstrations. some guns are off the streets after some good police work. a santa cruz police officer spotted this rv, one he was familiar with from previous crimes. police say he made contact with a couple inside, one had warrants out for her arrest. during a search, governments found two loaded weapons and evidence of meth sales. on tuesday the santa clara county board of supervisors is expected to discuss a proposal to ban gun shows at the fairgrounds. that that's where two gun shows happen each year. >> the primary mission of the county is the health and welfare of our residents. it seems that it's very counter productive to have something

like a gun show where people can buy and sell guns at a county facility. >> some gun owners say the shows should be regulated instead of stopped. that board meets tuesday morning at 9:30. the home on magnassen terrace. the fire wall between the home and garage helped contain the flames and limit the damage. investigators still looking into what started the fire. all eyes on a jittery wall street tomorrow after a wild ride on friday. the markets responded to president trump's announcement of new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, causing panic among many u.s. allies. today the white house on the defensive on the sunday morning talk shows. jennifer johnson has the story from washington. >> reporter: the white house says president trump could change his mind after his surprise plan to raise tariffs

on steel 25% and 10% on aluminum. >> he has made a decision at this point 25 and 10. if he for some reason should change his mind, then it will change. >> reporter: the tariffs were meant to target china, but would hurt canada, brazil, south korea and mexico. the plan could raise prices on everything from cars to soda cans and even republicans say cost u.s. jobs. >> china is your problem, mr. president. taxing european car imports hurts bmw because they can do the same thing to us. bmw makes more cars in greenville, south carolina, than any plant in the entire bmw family. >> reporter: european allies are threatening to retaliate and slap new tariffs on our products like bourbon and blue jeans. the president warns in a tweet, if the eu wants to further increase their already massive tariffs and barriers on u.s. companies, we will simply apply a tax to their cars which freely

pour into the u.s. >> donald trump ran against 16 republicans. none of those republicans supported donald trump's positions on trade. he beat every one of them. >> reporter: the president calls america's 8$800 billion yearly trade deficit stupid. the president hasn't officially signed off on a tariff yet. mission accomplished, members of the california air national guard successfully rescued a man 700 miles out at sea. the man was on board a carrier ship friday. he got very sick. the 129th rescue wing got him, brought the man back to san jose regional medical center. this is the helicopter touching down, signaling the completion of the mission. the rescue wing has saved more than 1100 people since 1977. still ahead, it is hollywood's biggest night.

in just the past couple of minutes we saw meryl streep, sandra bullock saoirse ronan all making their way into the theater. the top prize, who will get that best picture is still anyone's guess. >> the academy award -- zblchblg >> reporter: this year's oscars could offer suspense. >> i really think there's a chance that we could see a huge upset in the best picture category. >> reporter: the fantasy romance "the shape of water" with 13 nominations and "three billboards outside ebbing, missouri" are favored, but not heavily. >> there's so much room for so many pictures to come in and take that prize. >> reporter: including "get out"

lot of political statements at the oscars tonight. these orange pins in support of gun control, some stars will be wae wearing them. the pins are in support of every town for gun safety. this is not the first time stars have used fashion to make a statement during this awards season. during the golden globes, a lot of celebrities wore all black to support the times up movement. it's one of the most talked about movies in some time. some lucky kid got to watch it today thanks to someone special. a special screening of a hit movie. storm ranger mobile doppler radar not finding much underneath the clouds that are still left around the bay area. off to the west you could see more moisture headed our way. when you can expect rain to make a comeback.

a group of kid went to see "black panther." the screening happened at the grand lake theater in oakland this afternoon. you can hear the kids super excited there. mcgee said he wanted to do this right after the movie came out, but of course he had to work around the team's schedule. >> i'm just gladdic d i can do . it just felt right because it's an all black movie, all black director. it's important for kids in the inner city to see people of our color doing great things. >> the e . a developing story, more than 1 million people still without power as that powerful nor'easter continues to pound the east coast. in massachusetts a statement of emergency. parts of quincy, massachusetts, completely cut off right now. at least eight deaths now blamed on the storm, largely due to

trees crashing into homes and cars. a different sight here, though. beautiful sunny skies. >> big change from yesterday. we had everything thrown at us. today we got sunshine. those clearing skies will set the stage for a chilly night tonight. we'll be watching closely for some patchy frost or icing conditions on the roadways. right now we have sunshine in san francisco. looks like a screen safer there for city camera. 55 is the high temperature of the day so far in san francisco. in dublin, 53 degrees. in san jose earlier it was 58 degrees. from here, though, most of the week ahead we're going to be trending warmer. you'll really start to notice the afternoons especially by tuesday turning a lot warmer around the bay area. tomorrow morning look out around the north bay where we may see fog that could also help to maybe ice up some of the roadways, sometimes referred to

as freezing fog. look out for that around napa tomorrow morning. around the bay, we'll see numbers closer to the 40s. we should see highs in the 60s around san jose tomorrow. 62 in oakland. peninsula temperatures climbing from the upper 50s to low 60s around palo alto. san francisco, upper 50s. closing in on the 60s by tuesday and wednesday. for the north bay, we'll see high temperatures in the mid 60s. right now storm ranger not finding much. we have clouds off to the west, but short-term we're going to see high pressure building in despite the facts we'll have clouds at times. monday into tuesday looks dry. 4:00 wednesday you begin to maybe see a chance of showers there in the north bay. wednesday night into thursday comes our chance of rain. unlike last week, look at these rain totals with this number

system, most places picking up the less than a quarter inch of rain. not a big system, but lit probab -- it will probably have an impact on thursday morning's commute. saturday looking dry. but sunday into monday next w k weekend looks like we will see more rain coming in. here's where the numbers really change. inland spots, tuesday could be close to 70. that is a big change from highs yesterday in the low 50s. 70s and 60s. even with that rain chance, we'll stay with temperatures in the low 60s. chilly morning tomorrow. we'll have to watch out for some ice. but things will be trending much warmer through midweek. >> kind of back to normal now. one critical component of that isn't up to manufacturing

flight... bogus parts that find their way onto airplanes. it can have deadly consequences. senior investigative reporter stephen stock has been looking into this for bogus parts that find their way onto airplanes can have deadly consequences. >> senior reporter david stock has been looking into this more than two years. tonight talks with a whistle blower who says the problem has gone from bad to worse. >> reporter: faa and ntsb record show that nearly lly 3,000 dift instances of unapproved parts found on airplanes. the list includes both official

faa notification and enforcement action. >> the fatal accident would happen any time. >> reporter: this man says the problem of unapproved parts on airplanes is worse than the faa acknowledges. his name is charles chi. >> i had 20 people teams working for me. >> reporter: based in china he worked as a quality control inspector for a campaign that supplied flight control systems for boeing aircraft. >> those materials are banned materials. >> reporter: during his inspection, he says he found that parts outsourced by a third party chinese supplier with your made with what he says were inferior materials that weren't being baked long enough to harden appropriately during production. he says the company forged proper production records. these parts are components of the boeing 777 spoiling system which is allow the airplanes to take off and land safely. >> you need to fake the part to

get the hydrogen out of the part. otherwise the hydrogen goes into the part and can make the part very brittle so that part can fail. >> reporter: he says he took his concerns to his company, boeing and to the faa several times. faa documents confirm that hundreds of the parts were manufactured in violation of faa standards and that documents were, quote, fabricated. even so, the faa still allowed boeing to install the parts as is. those parts remain on boeing aircraft to this day. a spokesperson for the company he worked for said the parts in question were lately tested and determined to meet specifications, that there had been no reported issues with these parts and none are flight safety critical. the chinese vendor that supplied them no longer supplies boeing. former acting faa administrator and his business partner at jda

aviation technology solutions mike rio both say the faa is not doing everything it can to monitor, track and keep unapproved parts out of the system. >> they need to treat an unapproved part no differently than they do any other safety issue. >> reporter: this congressman says right now the faa does not pay attention to unapproved parts. >> one critical component that isn't up to manufacturer standards could take down a plane midair. >> a lot of our airlines have outsourced their heavy maintenance overseas where one criminal could put in a part that's going to cause a critical failure in that plane. one terrorist could put in a part that intentionally is going to fail. >> reporter: citing recordkeeping weaknesses, lack of management control as well as inaccuracies in tracking
