francisco it is monday morning and it's a chilly one. we are looking live at san francisco right now and you might not want to get out of bed just yet. stay with us here. this is "today in the bay." thanks so much for joining us, i'm kris sanchez, in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. this morning it is a chilly one out there. i have the sniffles. >> did you have frost on your windshield? i had frost on my windshield. >> i'm in the garage, so -- >> oh. fancy. >> i have someone who scrapes the frost off my car. >> mike is even fancier. yes, the reason for that patchy frost is because the temperatures are in the 30s and don't be surprised if you catch patchy frost on your windshield but also a good chance of seeing that out on the roads this morning. south bay 38 degrees right now,

clear skies, that's what's keeping these temperatures nice and cold, peninsula 40 degrees, tri-valley 34 and in the north bay there it goes right there, kris, you guessed it, patchy frost. 32 degrees. east bay patchy frost as well. san francisco is at about 4 42. we've been waking up with pretty chilly temperatures, not a big change there. i haven't seen too much fog yet, but mike knows if it's cold we could have issues on the roadways. with the fog and freezing temperatures the possibility of freezing fog. we will talk about that. we are looking over here, the road weather index doesn't show any problems from the south bay, easy drive, clear sailing from gilroy and over the santa cruz mountains for 101 and 72 respective respectively. 232 reports of a mattress and sheetrock. an odd combination but that's usually not good for the roadway at the 101 interchange, should be a quick traffic break. a smooth drive heading out of the north bay and toward the bay

bridge. the north bay is where vianey is talking about the possibilities of temperatures and fog creating slick roadways. no reports reported by chp just yet. developing story now, san francisco police are looking for a football star aldon smith this morning in connection with a domestic violence incident that happened over the weekend. late last night smith posted a cryptic social media post reacting to the investigation. >> sergio quintana has more on what happened. >> on aldon smith's verified instagram accounts this photo of what looks like pavement and the message wtf oh, you are all wrong. this post made while the football star is on the run. san francisco police want to talk about him about a domestic violence incident that took place at a resident on bush street. a second call came from the victim who reported she was bitten, among other injuries. >> bit her on the wrist and climbed out the window.

>> reporter: when police arrived neighbor terry graham saw the commotion from her apartment window across the street and decided to get a better look. >> when i came out, sat outside to have a cigarette, i seen the police car sitting right here, the one across the street and then the ambulance and then a few minutes later the two officers came out with the girl and put her in the back of the suv. >> reporter: smith has an ext t extensive rap sheet with other investigations involving domestic violence, he has faced charges ranging from hit and run, making false bomb threats at lax, possession of illegal assault weapons and multiple charges of dui. he is currently on an extended suspension from the nfl after signing with the oakland raiders in 2015. sermg joe quintana. "today in the bay." oakland police are investigating the shooting of a man found walking on a busy interstate. about 6:00 last night people in a car say they saw that man walking alongside northbound 880 near the coliseum at 66th avenue. the good samaritans eventually

flagged down police who took that victim to the hospital. chp officers later found an abandoned car nearby. so far there is no update about the victim or how he's connected to that abandoned vehicle. four arrests in a stolen vehicle pursuit on the peninsula. this morning we now know one of the men who led police on that chase was hit by an unmarked police cruiser while trying to get away. four men stole a car and were spotted in san bruno saturday. the suspects reportedly sped out of the parking lot, hitting several stars before crashing. then police say the suspect too many off running. that's when one of them was hit by a police cruiser. he was taken to the hospital, the others were taken to jail. three of the suspects are minors and are believed to be responsible for several robberies and burglaries. 4:34. community activists are organizing a student walkout this week. this is involving one south bay school district. the group is concerned about possible mismanagement by alum

rock union school district board members. they say an audit conducted last year seemed to raise more questions. parents and teachers are calling for students to walk out thursday ahead of a scheduled school board meeting. continuing coverage now, a lot of bay area natives are now able to call themselves oscar winners including sam rockwell, he grew up in daly city and took home the award for best supporting actor for his portrayal of a racist police officer in the movie "three billboards outside ebbing, missouri." >> when i was eight years old i was called into the principal's office and my father was looking sullen and he said we have to go, it's grandma. i said what's wrong with grandma? he said, no, we're going to the movies. >> apparently that's why it started, his love of movies. rockwell attended this school of the arts in san francisco back when it was called the makatier

school of the arts. i hope i said that right. he graduated in the late '80s. the school is now known adds the ruth asala school of the arts. other oscar winners are making the bay area crowd. james ivory is from berkeley, he won an award for best adapted screenplay for the movie "call me by your name." ivory is the oldest person ever to win an oscar. the best animated movie wasn't to "coco" which i chose. >> you did? >> i did. pixar is located in emeryville and the writer and co-director of "coco" is from uva city. >> i haven't seen that one yet. >> i've heard so much about it. i didn't see it, either, but i heard so much about it. when you hear the buzz, that's how you know. coming up next on "today in the bay," amazon versus google, a feud heating up between the tech giants with the latest shot

investors are eyeing political developments in europe as italy is set for a hung parliament and german chancellor angela merkel is headed for a fourth term. continued concerns about a global trade war and that would hit european and nafta allies more than china. we get economic data on the services sector, manufacturing, productivity and the jobs report. on friday the dow fell 70 points to 24,538, the nasdaq rose 77 to 7,257. amazon fires the latest shot in its ongoing fight with google. it will stop selling all nest home automation products such as smart thermostats. nest products may be available through third party vendors on amazon. nest was absorbed into google after being a stand-alone unit. amazon is expanding into the home business with its recent purchase of ring but it's also refused to sell the google home

device and pixel smart phones. google has pulled youtube from amazon fire tv and echo devices. up in the sky it is a flying car. reports say that porsche is developing passenger drones and is close to showing off the first design. you would have some control over the machine but a large chunk of the flight would be automated. it seems odd maybe for porsche so venture into flying vehicles but it's likely feeling the pressure as rivals, daimler, volvo and vw are already dipping their toes into that water. marcus and kris, back over to you. >> thank you, landon. i would say part of the joy of a porsche would be driving it, not being driven in it, right? wouldn't you rather drive it. >> exactly. >> it's a porsche, though. >> either way i'd take the for that. >> i'm with you. new this morning it turns out only about a quarter of employees attribute the bump in their paycheck to the new tax law. that is according to a new study by bank rate.com. the new tax law revisions allows

for employers -- allowed for employers to withhold less money from their employees paychecks and most often that results in higher take-home pay for workers, but only 24% of aware of the changes and out of the workers who did notice a change in their take-home pay, baby boomers and gen xers are more likely to say it is because of the new tax law, half of millennials credit that law. we don't know what they credit instead. if you didn't get enough of that rain last week, don't worry, we have more coming for you. >> in terms of the timeline you're going to have to stick around after the break because it looks like we may only have a couple days left of dry temperatures here in the bay area. i will have the details coming up. and this live look 580 we do have company. we always have company. the big commute out of tracy and altamonte pass, moves well. we will talk about what's going on farther south. the south bay has a new incident.

francisco 4:45. look at this lovely picture of the transamerica building there, it is so clear, we can see that little light at the top. we know there are clouds coming as well so we will check in with vianey in just a little bit. avalanche danger in western washington remains high. on saturday this group of adventurers decided the risk was worth that trip.

the group saw a small sign of an avalanche that swept away two snowshoers up the same mountains. the group turned around. an avalanche that partially buried three people on saturday did not stop skiers and snow borders from returning to southern california's ma'am mom mountain. the crews yesterday were back and people enjoyed sunny conditions. on saturday snow rushed down the slopes near the top of the mountain. there were no serious injuries here and the resort was closed all day. now, the chair lift did remain closed yesterday. >> you don't have to tell me twice. dangerous conditions, i would be in the lodge with aed toy. >> i love hikes, but making in the know -- >> i will say this, though, even though they got a ton of snow we are still not at snow pack. we are still behind in terms of where we are supposed to be around this time of year which

is rather interesting because they got several feet of snow. definitely something we will be looking out for. as far as our temperatures right now it's certainly feeling chilly. we're waking up to patchy frost, no snow here. did anybody catch the snow flurries, the slush or hail this past weekend? we had a crazy weather pattern. now things are becoming more stable. we have this ridge of high pressure. we still have a cold area, south bay 38, 40 degrees for the peninsula, tri-valley at about 34, north bay at 32, san francisco 42, in the east bay at about 38 degrees. over the next couple of hours you're going to notice a nice increase in temperatures. so as this ridge of high pressure begins to do the nate we are going to notice a nice change, we are going to notice an increase of about ten plus degrees in some places from where we were this weekend. a high of 63 degrees for san jose. milpitas 62, cupertino 64 and east bay also in the low 60s,

oakland a high of 62 degrees, waukeg walnut creek 62. along the peninsula upper 50s for today. even in san francisco a high in the upper 50s. north bay will be in the upper 50s, lower 60s. let's talk about the hour by hour outlook. we have nothing on the radar for the next couple of days. if i fast forward this timeline through wednesday, late, 11:00 p.m., we have another storm system moving in and that's going to start bringing cloud cover and the return of rain. as far as if this is going to be a big rainmaker, long range outlook shows that system moving in and our total estimates are between a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch. not a big rainmaker but we will be enjoying some more of that rain that we very much need. let's get a check of the roads with mike. we talked about the fog and the freezing temperatures up in the north bay and here at healdsburg this is where our road weather index says it is likely to have foggy conditions

right here where 101 travels through, 128, santa rosa. farther south on the radio i heard about some fog through the area as well so be careful in parts of the north bay. the rest of the bay south of the bay bridge looks great. clear view, no problems coming in from the gilroy morgan hill area. over the 17th summit a smooth drive as well. we do have a crash reported. the brokar road on ramp to 101 and i saw a little slowing which did clear heading past sjc. looks like things should be clear from visibility over there at the highway 101 interchange in brokaw. toward the bay bridge a nice easy drive. in the north bay, san rafael those curvy roads that's the only winding that's going on. no problems as far as the freezing fog. we showed you that fog. there is a chance. back to you. now to the continued recovery efforts in the

northeast. look what these folks are dealing with. this is after a massive storm left widespread destruction and killed at least seven people over the weekend. this morning crews continue to work to bring power back to millions of people who are still in the dark right now. with more snow in the forecast, residents back in new york say the situation is getting desperate. >> it could get much worse for you. >> and for everyone here. everyone here has water in their pipes and if it goes down in the 20s things freeze. >> the winter weather isn't expected to be over anytime soon. there is more snow expected to fall overnight all over the northeast. happening today california's lieutenant governor will officially make his bid for governor. gavin newsom has announced his candidacy but he sits to file paperwork this afternoon at city hall. knewsome served as mayor of san francisco from 2004 to 2011.

a recent legal decision put that date on the back burner, march 5th was president trump's original deadline to end daca, the deferred action for childhood arrivals program but the supreme court last week refused to hear white house requests to hear the current injunction. justices called for the case to play itself out first in the lower courts. some daca recipients may still be at risk of deportation if they have not yet received their renewals. immigrants living in the u.s. illegally will not automatically be registered to vote in california come april. that dispute online -- that disputes online stories claiming that case. the issue is a california law that takes effect next month, it will automatically register people to vote when they get a driver's license or id card. undocumented immigrants in california are allowed to get driver's license but election officials say that does not mean that they will automatically be

good monday morning to you. 4:54 right now as we continue on the day with "today in the bay." taking a live look in san jose, as you can see a beautiful way to start off the morning. nbc bay area responds to an antioch man who asked for our help with a car dealer. >> consumer investigator chris chmura says that our team got the case rolling. >> good morning. michael paid more than 50 grand for a used porsche 911 carrera. he said the seller mercedes benz of walnut creek said the car passed an inspection before he bought it. then he took it to a porsche dealer and that dealer told him the tires were ten years old. michael says he has a picture showing the cracking, he shared it with us right up there. so he said he paid $1,300 for new tires.
