approaching 5:00 for you. as we look outside, this is a beautiful shot. it is not christmas, it is march and it is a beautiful day here in san francisco as you can see. 5:00 for you right now. welcome to "today in the bay." thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia has the day off. so we're holding down the fort. what a nice day to do it. nice weather so far, traffic moving smoothly. >> everything is going well so far. >> so far. >> hopefully it stays that way. another thing we're looking forward to is a spring, we are a couple weeks away from spring, march 20th will be the official welcome. for now we have to get over the winter hunch. south bay waking up to 38 degrees, peninsula 39, tri-valley is cold 33. don't be surprised if you see patchy frost on your windshield this morning. north bay 31 degrees right now. we will start to see colder temperatures peaking at 5:00 a.m. that means some ice is possible on the mounds,

especially mountain roads and hillside runoff. after the weekend we had of pretty crazy weather i think these clear skies are a welcome site. people are so happy to wake up to clear skies and say, hey, it's monday. all right. a little exaggeration. over here it's a nice smooth flow of traffic. great roads, the speed sensors don't show a lot of slowing. coming over the santa cruz summit, highway 17, over here 101 an easy drive to and from gilroy, morgan hill, south county looks great for our folks with a longer commute. over here the altamonte pass shows a slow drive getting through the tri-valley and bay area bay area, no delays for our transit systems. that's a great start. back to you. developing this morning san francisco police want to question troubled bay area football player aldon smith about a domestic violence incident, but so far he's not cooperating. >> as nbc bay area was first to

report yesterday police are investigating a domestic violence incident in san francisco. they say officers responded to calls about a woman who was being beaten up and believed smith may be the suspect. as you may know he played for the niners and the raiders and is currently under suspension from the nfl. late yesterday smith posted this cryptic photo and a message on social media but never turned himself in. damian trujillo is following that story and will have a live report coming up. more people are hopping on caltrain for their commute and it's leading to overcrowded trains. anser hassan is live with a closer look at those numbers. >> reporter: good morning, guys. it's still early out here, you can see there hasn't been a train that's come through this station yet. the san carlos station is still under construction. part of the next phase in the san carlos transit village. after this new report cal trains report suggests there has been an increase in ridership and that's a sign of a strong

economy. even more people using public transport means less traffic on 101. all good news but it comes with some problems. the san mateo journal is reporting that caltrain is looking at a mixed bag of results. ridership is up by more than 3% since last year and so, too, is revenue. the increase in passengers has brought in about a million dollars in next door revenue according to a new caltrain report. they say that they've seen a steady growth since 2010 but this growth in ridership also means overcrowded trains. caltrain is proposing running extra trains during peak hours but that's not likely to happen for another four years when caltrain converts its fleet to electronic trains. that also means station platforms like this one here at san carlos would have to be extended to accommodate the longer trains. both of those improvements cost money and they're depending on additional grants for funding. with he did some digging overnight and while caltrain is

seeing an increase in ridership bart is seeing a drop of 4% in ridership. bart issued a new report just a few days ago. in it they said that riders have been complaining about homeless people using the trains and wanting cleaner bart stations. caltrain is seeing a drop in its shuttle services. they will look at those routes and see which may be cut. that all comes up at a meeting next week. reporting live in san carlos, anser hassan, "today in the bay." police are reportedly adding extra protection around one san francisco elementary school after someone made threats against the school and staff last week. rooftop elementary school is in the twin peaks neighborhood. the chronicle reports the school received those threats from someone who police then arrested. that person was supposed to be released from jail yesterday. school leaders do believe that those threats are not considered credible. happening today florida lawmakers may vote on new gun restrictions in the wake of the

parkland school shooting rampage. on saturday state senators held a rare weekend session. only teachers with law enforcement training would be eligible. critics say even if the legislation passes it falls short. for one thing they say it does not ban the sales of assault rifles. >> tomorrow santa clara county supervisors will consider banning gun shows at the county fairgrounds. two gun shows happen there each year. one supervisor said the county only made $6,000 at the last event and he wants to ban to keep those guns off of south bay streets. >> the primary mission of the county is the health and welfare of our residents and it seems to me that it's very counterproductive to have something like a gun show where people can buy and sell guns at a county facility. >> some gun owners say the shows should be regulated instead of

stopped. new this morning president trump on twitter seeming to reaffirm his commitment for new tariffs for imported steel and aluminum. in his tweets he says we have large trade deficits with mexico and canada. nafta which is under renegotiation right now has been a bad deal for the u.s.a. massive relocation of companies and jobs. tariffs on steel and aluminum will only come off if new and fair nafta agreement is signed. also canada must treat our farmers much better. highly restrictive. mexico much to much more on stopping drugs from pouring into the u.s. they have not done what needs to be done. millions of people are addicted and dying. those tweets are the president's latest comments on a plan he announced last week that he believes will boost america's steel industry. the president wants to impose 25% tariffs on imported steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum.

he believes it will correct america's $800 billion trade deficit. the white house insists it will save jobs and consumers will barely notice. opponents strongly disagree and believe it will ignite a trade war. >> we are letting china off the hook, you're punishing the american consumer and our allies. you're making a huge mistake here. >> i think the american people are willing to pay a cent and a half more a year for a six-pack of beer. >> europe a threatening to retaliate with its own tariffs and the fears are sparking new jitters on wall street. the president is expected to sign off on the tariffs this week. continuing coverage now, the party may still be going on in some places around hollywood this morning. tinsel town's biggest night saw the 90th academy awards honor the film industry's top talents in film. it also touched on the me too movement.

napa 33, san jose 38 and check out concord at about 37 degrees. don't worry, there is a warm light at the end of all this. we're actually falling into a bit of a warming trend, a two day warming trend to be exact. our temperatures will be about 10 to possibly 15 degrees warmer in some spots, san jose climbing froo the 60s at 63 degrees, morgan hill 62 and milpitas will be in the 60s. similar conditions for the east bay. we will stay drier for two more days before we see any more activity in the atmosphere. the backup has begun at the bay bridge toll plaza. a heavier flow of traffic coming in early, now the fast track lanes are starting to slow and the incline slows as well. we will likely see the metering lights on in the next few minutes. no major problems gets over there. again, this is the focus right now, the rest of the bay shows a nice easy drive and slowing out of the altamonte. back to you. 5:11 now. breaking news just coming into our newsroom from overseas.

good morning, it's 5:15. if you are waking up in san jose bundle up, it's 38 degrees right now, but we are seeing even some colder spots in the north bay into the low 30s at 31, 30 degrees. i will talk about the big changes coming up and how much warmer we are expected to get for today coming up in just a bit. and vianey, there we go, i turned the camera from emeryville over there, that's above the roadway, the metering lights are not on yet, but you see why there's slowing at the toll plaza. all these folks jamming up toward the bay bridge. we will track the buildup. it's right on schedule but it is there. coming up. and futures call for stocks to sink a bit on the open this monday morning. good morning to you. the broader markets had a rough week last week as president trump announced new tariffs. we will talk more about that in politics in about a half an

hour. dow opens this morning just above 24,500. wells fargo is back in the news, the california state fresh remember john chang calling for the ceo of wells farg go he to resign. on capitol hill senators are moving to make life easier on banks, loosening some of the protections created by dodd/frank. dodd/frank put into place after the economic collapse of 2009. the change would decrease the number of banks considered systematically important. you might have seen the study from mitt researchers that said uber drivers don't earn very much money, less than minimum wage. the authors are reexamining their data. the he . the white house says it's scheduled to hold a video game summit this week. the white house says it will meet with video game executives. we called pretty much every

video game executive we can think of, we can't find anybody who has been invited. many didn't know about it. president trump says he's disturbed by violence in video games connecting it to recent school shootings. he suggests a ratings system for video games. the video games already have a rating system. the president is using his own family experience as he decided video games are too violent. mr. trump said, quote, i have a very young son and i look at some of the things he's watching and i say how is that possible. we're cautious to bring barron into the news coverage, he is his own person. in this case i think it's fair to show that even the trump family has to struggle with what to allow that age of a child to play. >> right. i mean, he can have access to anything. >> well, yes. but just like every other dad, you know, he's got to decide do i let him play this or do i take it away. >> my kids were no nerdy they

were playing family feud on the wii. >> on the wii. >> i know. i'm sorry. i feel terrible now. >> you can play your wii out here as well. you can see skiers and snow borders are taking advantage of some of that fresh snow in lake at that show and so is our very own laura garcia whose birthday is today. >> happy birthday. >> she actually shot this over the weekend at homewood mountain resort. more than six feet of snow fell there last week. a lot of fresh snow out there for a lot of people. >> she is a better skier than me, that's for sure. >> wait. did we just now allow laura to write this trip off as a business -- >> happy birthday, laura. >> great weekend for her to head up there, too, all that fresh snow, all good things, laura. all good things. i hope you're having a great time. for us here we did see some slush and snow flurries over the weekend in the bay area but not today. we have that ridge of high pressure that's going to

dominate, it's keeping us nice and clear right now but also cold. tri-valley 33, peninsula 39 and check out san francisco, a little milder at 42 degrees. we do still have that chance of seeing patchy frost. i mentioned that ridge of high pressure so what does that mean? that means that we are going to have a stable kind of weather pattern at least for the next two days and that's also going to raise our temperatures up significantly in some spots. san jose will be with a high of 63 degrees, milpitas a high of 62, out near the east bay very light winds, winds not really a factor for today, walnut creek 62, along the peninsula upper 50s and also in san francisco mid to upper 50s for today, the embarcadero 59, mission 60 degrees and in the north bay it may be cold but eventually it will start to climb into the 60s. let's talk about our next chance of rain.

so if i take this timeline wednesday into thursday we do see another system making its way out. as far as rain totals, not a big rainmaker, absolutely a quarter of an inch. fast forwarding that timeline to saturday we have another system moving in and that looks like it's probably going to be our biggest rainmaker. after that we fall into a little bit of a dry spell as well. as i mentioned for the next two days we will have that ridge of high pressure warming us up a bit and rain starts to move in late wednesday into thursday and then yet again we get another storm system moving in on saturday. mike, how are the roads. we've got the backup at the bay bridge the metering lights should be turned on any second now. we did see this back in early 5:10 is when we saw the cash lanes start to back up. now we're seeing things move more smoothly. we do have that slow incline. this is the slowest section. going there on the travel times is just fine.

among kids are increasing dramatically. they are being called the second victims of the opioid epidemic sweeping the nation. doctors say young children are ingesting unattended narcotics out of curiosity. according to the study released this morning the number of peed drink icu admissions has doubled between the year 2004 and 2015. many kids got into methadone and narcotics used to treat adults addicted to painkillers. 2% of these young patients die. >> 2% seems like a small number but you think about two children out of 100 dying from a condition that could have been avoidable is disheartening. >> an estimated 2.6 million americans have an opioid abuse disord disorder. oakland school districts are receiving 6 figure grants. that will assist immigrant and refugee school children. oakland schools will receive more than $600,000, san

do keep us warm. when you move those clouds you remove mother nature's blankie. right now the temperatures in the 30s. napa 33, concord 37. we are expecting nice dry conditions, mostly clear skies, warmer temperatures into the afternoon, but it's not going to last very long. we are on track for another storm system and we aren't tracking in i major weather right now but we do have storm ranger, bruno mountain you can see the sweep here, not capturing much a tift yet, but moving into the later portion of this week we will start seeing more activity up on this radar. i will have a closer look at our next chance of rain, timeline, and also the snow pack and what that's looking like in the sierra coming up in about 15 minutes. we are looking at a smooth drive. nothing unexpected for your commute. we will take you to the south bay where i told you we would check on this crash, this is northbound 85 right before 82

whistle cam kn-- which is el ca reel. this is silicon valley, we don't get that commute until a little later on in the morning. highway 17 moves smoothly over the summit, 101 out of the south county a nice easy drive as well. the bay bridge toll plaza did have that backup and the metering lights were turned on a few minutes early. things have sorted out to a pretty typical pattern now. fast track, that's your advantage for having the electronic toll taking. a developing story now, san francisco police are once again looking for football star aldon smith this morning in connection with a domestic violence incident that happened over the weekend. late last night smith posted a cryptic social media post reacting to this investigation. point. we haven't heard from police on that side, kris, but you can bet they're keeping a close eye on this apartment complex just in case aldon smith does return to the residence where his girlfriend apparently lives here on bush street in san francisco. in fact, police were back here again last night on reports that a resident here had located they believed aldon smith back inside the buildings. officers were not able, however, to locate the football player. on saturday night police say they got a call from a neighbor asking officers to investigate possible domestic violence at smith's girlfriend's home. police say a second call came from the girlfriend herself claiming she had been bitten, suffering also other injuries. police say aldon smith was gone by the time they arrived. on smith's verified instagram account someone posted a picture of pavement and the letters wtf followed by, quote, o, you are all wrong. neighbors stood and watched as

police investigated this case. >> i came out, sat outside to have a cigarette, i seen the police car sitting right here, then one across the street and then the ambulance. and then a few minutes later the two officers came out with the girl and put her in the back of the suv. >> reporter: aldon smith is currently under suspension by the nfl. the 49ers fired him after repeated run-ins with the law. that's when the oakland raiders signed him, but the pass rusher hasn't played for the raiders since 2015. aldon smith was waiting for reinstatement into football by the nfl, but looks like he has some other more serious problems to deal with. live in san francisco, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." thank you very much. >> police are investigating the shooting of a man found walking on a busy interstate. about 6:00 last night people in the car saw that man walking alongside northbound 880 near coliseum and 66th street. the good samaritans eventually

flagged down police who took that victim to the hospital. chp officers later found an abandoned car nearby. so far there's been no update on the victim or the abandoned vehicle. four arrests in a stolen vehicle pursuit in the peninsula. this morning we now know one of those men who led police on that chase was hit by an unmarked police cruiser while trying to get away. police say four men stole a car and they were spotted at the mall in san bruno on saturday. the suspects sped out of that parking lot hitting several cars before crashing. the suspects took off running, that's when one was hit by a police cruiser, he was taken to the hospital, frts others arrested, three of the suspects are minors and believed to be responsible for several robberies and burglaries. community activists are organizing a student walkout this week involving one south bay school district. the group is concerned about possible miss management by alum rock union school board members

when they say an audit conducted last year seemed to raise more questions about that. parents and teachers are calling for students to walk out on thursday ahead of the scheduled school board meeting. gavin newsom will officially make his bid for governor. gavin newsom already announced his candidacy but he is sit to file the paperwork this afternoon with the san francisco department of elections at city hall and make it official. newsom served as mayor of san francisco from 2004 to 2011. good morning. we will go to the peninsula. easy drive. 101 through palo alto, looking north so these taillights traveling past university, pillow and in towards san francisco, opposite into the south bay for these head lights, everything moves nicely for the bay shore. green speed sensors for 101 and 28. this crash 85 approaching 81.

looking for a smooth slow of traffic as well. highway 4 slowing through concord and slowing through richmond on the east shore freeway. the metering lights are on at the bay bridge toll plaza and we expect to see that slowing further north. we are looking over here. this is what we're talking about the fog in the north bay is registers on our road weather index. it's moved down toward petaluma out of santa rosa. vianey has been talking about the cold weather. when there's fog and freezing temperatures you could get a little ice. >> i certainly saw a little bit of ice on my window. >> slow it down, everybody. we can cruise on right through the week. we are expecting wet weather ahead. i know, this past weekend we did have a little bit of wacky weather. saturday even into sunday a little bit early on. a look at saturday's forecast, unfortunately we're tracking -- this will be the arrival of our second system. the first system is set to make its arrival on wednesday, this

saturday system looks like it might be bringing a good amount of rainfall to the bay area. the temperatures will once again top out in the 50s. the next two days we will still be seeing 60s and even 70s for tomorrow and then fast forward through sunday's forecast and it looks like those showers will linger into sunday's forecast as well. so unfortunately we are on tap now again, we are still a couple days out, so we are going to have to monitor and see how quickly this system decides to move out and how long it decides to stay. out of kirkwood more snow. we are still behind in terms of the snow pack but check out saturday and sunday, we have snow on tap, but that will make for difficult road conditions to always be prepared. coming up next on "today in the bay" savannah guthrie live ahead of a big charity tennis match in san jose. >> plus why there may be yet another delay for bart getting into the south bay.

santa rosa 30 degrees, napa 33, down through the south bay in those 30s. we are tracking dry weather but we are also tracking wet weather ahead. i will have all the details coming up just in a bit. we are looking at a build for the tri-valley travel times, i will show you one reason why 680 is slower than -- a lot slower than it was a few minutes ago. now to a story that may be a major hit to the south bay. more delays possible for bart's expansion into milpitas and san jose. the mercury news reports the project will be pushed back to next year because of delays in testing as well as, quote, breakdowns in communication and not enough personnel. initially they said the stations would be open in december of 2017. now it looks like the stations won't open until next january or march of next year. it is a set back for people in the south bay looking forward to

expanding their commute options to places like oakland and san francisco. avalanche danger in western washington state remains high today. on saturday this group of adventurers on mcclellan view peak decided that the risk was not worth the trip. that group saw a small sign of an avalanche that swept away two snowshoers further up the mountain. those snowshoers did get out safely. this group turned around. experts say snow in the area remains unsteady. at one time today was a critical day for hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants but a recent legal decision put that on the back burner for now. march 5th was president trump's original deadline to end the deferred action for childhood arrivals program, but the supreme court last week refused to hear a white house request to lift the current injunction. justices called for the case to play itself out first in the lower courts. some daca recipients may still

the search is on for a driver 5:55 now, and developing this morning the search is on for a driver involved in a deadly hit and run crash. a woman walking home after celebrating her 26th birthday was killed. this happened over the weekend in carmichael in sacramento county. crystal shrum was celebrating with her boyfriend and a couple other friends. after an argument crystal went to catch up with her boyfriend who decided to walk home. at some point she was hit by the driver and killed. the chp found her face down in the middle of the road. investigators say they believe she was already laying down for some reason when she was hit. now they're looking for the driver who hit her and didn't stop. >> whoever did this to my cousin and my best friend, they are just the worst kind of person. i'm sorry. you don't drive away. you don't drive away. >> investigators don't know the
