"today in the bay" continues right now. thanks for joining us on this monday morning, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's get you started on your day. looking at what's going on weather wise before you step out the door, vianey arana for kari hall today. >> it's not too crazy outside, calm but also cold. it's a combination of clear skies and temperatures in the 30s right now. outside we are waking up to 36

degrees in the south bay, the peninsula 37, tri-valley 34 and out here the north bay 31 degrees. don't be surprised if you still expect to see a little bit of patchy frost in the windshield. san francisco at 42. we will be climbing 30 plus degrees within the next couple hours for your daytime highs. i will talk more about what we can expect with this warming trend in just a bit. heads up for folks on the capital corridor waiting for people on the capital corridor. they are held up over in the sacramento davis area. there was a vehicle that was hit on the tracks, hit by a freight train not a commuter train. this is not affecting commuters in that way they are just held up back at the sacramento davis area so they will not get into the area anytime soon. that is the big issue for the rails. bart has 50 trains running on time. we will get more information as it affects folks on the train. looking in the north bay novato and north the fog is registers.

be careful. cold up there, potential for freezing fog and slippery roads. we have the bay bridge toll plaza where the backup is on for the metering lights. south of there very easy drive. breaking news for you just coming in from oversees, it appears in turkey that may have thwarted a possible terror attack against our u.s. embassy there. it's reporting that four islamic state group suspects were taken into custody. nbc news is working this story. as soon as we get more reporting from them we'll certainly bring it to you. and developing this morning, san francisco police want to question troubled bay area football player aldon smith about a domestic violence incident but so far he is not cooperating. as nbc bay area first reported yesterday, police are investigating a domestic violence incident in san francisco. they say officers responded to calls about a woman getting beaten up and they believe smith may be the suspect. he has played for the niners and

the raiders and is currently suspected. late yesterday police posted a cryptic message on social media but never turned himself in. damian trujillo is following this story, he will have a live report at the bottom of this hour. new this morning you might notice caltrain is getting a little bit more crowded. a new report finds that more people are using the public transit service. "today in the bay's" anser hassan is live at the san carlos caltrain station with the new numbers and what it means for riders other than a little less wiggle room. >> reporter: that's right. it's been quiet this monday morning. you can see not too many passengers out here yet. if you ride cal trains you may have noticed one big change, more passengers. the cal trains says that's a good thing, it's about the sign of a strong economy. with more people on the trains it means less traffic on 101. ridership is up this year by more than 3% since last year.

so, too, is revenue. the increase in passengers has brought in a million dollars in extra revenue according too a caltrain report. caltrain has seen a steady growth since 2010 but that growth also means overcrowded trains. caltrain is proposing running extra trains during peak hours. that's not likely to happen for another four years when caltrain concerts its fleet to electronic trains. it also means station platforms will likely have to be extended to accommodate the longer trains and both of those improvements cost money and they are dependent on grant funding for that. we did digging to compare caltrain with bart. while caltrain is seeing an increase in ridership bart has seen a 4% drop in ridership between now and this time last year. bart issued a new report a few days ago. they say riders have complained about homeless people on the trains and wanting cleaner stations as possible reasons for the decline.

as for caltrain they are looking at a new study that may lead to an increase in ticket prices, that will go before their board before the end of the year. anser hassan, "today in the bay." it's . police are reportedly adding extra protection around one san francisco elementary school after someone made threats against the school and staff last week. rooftop elementary school is located in twin peaks. the school received threats from someone who police arrested. the person was supposed to be released from jail yesterday. school leaders do believe that those threats are not considered credible. happening today florida lawmakers may vote on new gun restrictions in the wake of the parkland school shooting rampage. on saturday state senators held a rare weekend session and agreed to advance a measure to raise the minimum age for rifle sales to 21 and perhaps arm

teachers but only steechers with law enforcement training would be eligible. even if the legalization passes critics say it falls short for one thing, it does not ban sales of assault rifles. here at home tomorrow santa clara county supervisors will consider banning gun shows at the guns shows. one supervisor said the county only made 6,000 bucks on the last event so he wants that ban to keep guns off south bay streets. >> the primary mission of the county is the health and welfare of our residents. it seems to me that it's very counterproductive to have something like a gun show where people can buy and sell guns at a county facility. >> some gun owners tell us they think those shows should be regulated instead of shut down all together. >> at 6:06 the party might still be going on in hollywood this morning after tinsel town's biggest night. we're talking about the 90th annual academy awards honoring

i hope you're up making breakfast, maybe a nice hot cup of coffee. right now the temperatures call for a hot cup of coffee because they're fairly cold. san jose 36 degrees, palo alto 34, napa 33. check out santa rosa at 31 degrees. now, as far as your 24 hour temperature change, yesterday we woke up to similar conditions. so the 24 hour temperature change not too drastic, it is a little warmer along the coast, san francisco two degrees warmer, san jose one degree less. over the next couple hours we will notice a nice increase, a quick look at the willow glen temperature trend, by 10:00 a.m. eventually into the 40s, but we will climb nicely into the 60 degree mark by tomorrow. we could even see some 70s on the forecast. let's check in with mike. we are looking at a pretty smooth drive for the roadways. i want to tell you about that train crash. looking toward the south bay and up toward the bay bridge where the am l are on, things are moving smoothly in a pretty easy development for this friday.

good morning. a live look right now overlooking wood side. very beautiful, clear skies this morning. i will talk about the drying and warming trend in store for the bay area. and we are looking at travel times for the tri-valley. not so bad. things are just starting to creep up after that metal debris cleared from 680 over in the pleasanton area. north bay highway 37 shows a little build. pretty typical coming out of vallejo for your commute.

and futures call for stocks to sink a bit on the open this monday morning. good morning. broader markets had a rough week last week as president trump announced new tariffs. we will talk more about that as we talk politics in a half an hour. dow opens this morning just above 24,500. john change calling for wells fargo ceo to resign. on capitol hill senators are moving to make life easier on banks loosening some of the protections created by dodd/frank. dodd/frank put into place after the economic collapse of 2009. the change would decrease the number of banks having to follow stricter rules. you may have seen a study that says uber drivers don't earn very much money. the authors are going back to reexamining the data after many experts say they got the math

down. the head of uber says mit stands for mathematically incompetent heatees. the white house says they are set to hold a video game summit this week, they say it will be with video game executives but we've called pretty much every video game executive on the phone we can think of we can't find anybody that's been invited. president trump says he's disturbed by violence in video games connecting it to recent school shootings. he suggested we have a ratings system for video games. well, we already have a rating system for video games. i thought you might like this video, no, that's not a headless skier, it's okay, it's okay that he doesn't have a head, it's totally fine, it's a robot. a competition in korea organized by south korea's ministry of trade industry and energy and clearly our olympians don't have to worry about it too much but then again it went that long again we were watching robot cars going two miles an hour trying to figure out what to do, now you see them on 101.

>> you were talking about how if they looked more life like, we tend to feel really bad. >> when they fall down. that's true. >> i feel really bad. >> looked like me skiing. happening today the california department of water resources will conduct the third snow survey this year and they are expecting to see some dramatic improvement after all of the snowfall we have had over the last couple of days. the last survey about a month ago showed the snow pack at just 14% of historical average which is actually an improvement over december's measurements. so hopefully good news today. more details now it turns out that the snow pack across the west has declined dramatically over the years. that is according to a new study just released. scientists found drops in snow measurements at more than 90 rs since 1955. they are concerned that if this trend continues to drop it will eventually dip into our water supply. scientists say the problem is not that it's snowing less but

that the snow is melting sooner in the season than usual. check this out, skiers and snow borders are taking advantage of the fresh snow in lake tahoe and so is our very own laura garcia. she actually shot this video over the weekend at homewood mountain resort. more than 6 feet of snow fell there just last week. laura is definitely celebrating because today is her birthday. >> happy birthday. >> and she's also doing some journalism up there. >> she's working. >> continuing her research. >> never takes a break. vianey, is she going to get more snow today? >> not today but next weekend, yeah, it's looking good. i have updated info as far as that snow pack goes, but let's get you right out the door with your temperatures. 36 degrees in the south bay, 37 for the peninsula, 34 for the tri-valley, check out the north bay, nice gorgeous sunrise there, 31 degrees, 42 for san francisco and 42 for the east bay.

now, we are off to a very chilly start but eventually we will start climbing into the 60s. we are actually on tap for a bit of a drying/warming trend. 63 degrees your expected high for san jose as we head over towards the east bay. you will notice we are also into low 60s. oakland 62 and for the peninsula check this out upper 50s, very comfortable weather, belmont 60 degrees for san francisco upper 50s, 59 for the embarcadero and in the north bay 63 degrees for santa rosa. so your daytime highs are going to be a lot warmer than what we've seen this past weekend. let's talk about our next chance of seeing some rain. we have a storm system that will move in wednesday nice into early thursday morning. as far as rain totals go just about a tenth to possibly over a quarter of an inch from that first storm. then we have another storm system moving in on saturday into sunday. overall that rain possibility is expected to ringser through next monday. so let's talk about the sierra. what can we expect and what have we seen so far. snow totals have put squaw valley at 243 inches this

season, heavenly 170 inches but even then we're really still well below average. we have a cold dry snow which means less water and that snow pack we went from 20% to now 30, 40% average and we still need about six more similar storms to even get us to the average. over the next seven days we will definitely be looking out for the arrival of those next two storm systems. mike? vianey, we got in video of a train, a freight train and, there, that's the audi, the beautiful new audi that was smashed up by that freight train. no one was in that vehicle, they were inspecting the tracks for a while, but that has actually just cleared so let's look at your map as your travel times and we do have the delays still for the freight trains crash and that delay on to the capital corridor lines because of that crash on the tracks, they are now moving. 521 and 523 up to 90 minutes delay for folks coming into the area. if you have friends that ride that make sure the boss know

they have an excuse. looking over here slowing down the upper east shore freeway. as we look it's because of a crash there west 80 your commute direction over at san pablo avenue. looks like everything is moving over to the shoulder but one lane is still blocked so there is additional slowing as that commute starts to kick in for the upper east shore. the rest of the bay moves predictably. back to you. coming up next on "today in the bay," a new perspective of the great 1906 san francisco earthquake. the newly uncovered footage showing the devastation after the massive quake. the car passes an inspection but then there's trouble that costs more than a grand. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next.

our help with a car nbc bay area responds to an antioch man who asked for help with a car dealer. >> consumer investigator chris chmura says our team got the case rolling for him. >> good morning. michael paid more than 50 grand for a used porsche 911 carrera. he says the seller mercedes benz of walnut creek told him the car passed an inspection before he bought it, but about a week later when michael took it to a nearby porsche dealer for a once over that dealer told him the tires were ten years old. michael says he has a picture showing the cracking. he shared it with us. right up there. so he said he paid $1,300 for new tires.

michael then asked mercedes benz of walnut creek to reimburse him and he says the dealer declined. so he asked us for help. we contacted mercedes benz of walnut creek and it paid michael in full for the new tires, $1,300. the dealer didn't respond to our questions. okay. two things here. first, michael might have avoided this headache if he had asked someone to look over the who are is that before he bought it, and second, that seller's inspection, it's not very clear what that actually entailed. so if someone tells you they've inspected a car that you're going to buy, press them. who did it? how? when? where? and demand detailed answers. if you have a consumer complaint please call us, 888-996-tips or log on to nbcbayarea.com/responds. it's 6:25 now. we could soon get a look at new video of san francisco's 1906 earthquake. the chronicle reports this morning that a long lost film reel was recently found at a

against roger federer for a big charity match. we have a live report coming up from inside the arena in just a few minutes. no pressure, savannah. thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's get you set and headed out the door right now this morning. so to vianey arana in for kari hall this morning giving us a better look at what we can expect this day weatherwise. >> look at squaw creek, lake tahoe, beautiful shot this morning, negative 3 degrees. this gives us one more reason to be jealous of laura if he is a' inside, not if she's outside. we are in the 30s in santa rosa, 31 degrees, napa 33, oakland 42, hayward 40 degrees, san jose at about 36 degrees. we can expect to see a 20, 30 plus increase in temperatures especially as we head into the afternoon topping out in those 60s. i will have a look at how the reservoirs are doing in california after the recent rainfall.

mike? we're looking over toward the roadways where we have a smooth drive for the most part. nothing really unexpected, but we do have to check on this, going on just reported in san francisco, northbound 280 no slowing shows up yet but a couple minutes ago got reports of a crash at the 280/101 interchange. one detail did indicate they thought the vehicle was reported traveling over 100 miles an hour prior to the crash. we'll track that. right now we have an ambulance heading to the scene just in case. west 80 is recovering towards san pablo avenue. that has has been moved to the shoulder but the early slowing for the upper east shore may slow you as the build continues off the carquinez bridge. easy drive off the benicia bridge. san francisco police are looking for aldon smith this morning in connection with a domestic violence incident that happened over the weekend. last night smith posted a social

media post reacting to the investigation. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live in san francisco with what we know at this point which isn't much because he is not even in custody, damien. >> reporter: that's right, kris. not a lot of activity on bush street in san francisco and a quick check of the jail logs at the hall of justice don't know that aldon smith has been arrested for booked just yet. san francisco police only saying that they want to question him to see what exactly happened here on saturday night. police made a second trip to this apartment last night. a resident called saying they saw smith back inside. officers were not able to locate the football player. on saturday night police say they got a call from a neighbor asking officers to investigate possible domestic violence at smith's girlfriend's home. police say a second call came from the girlfriend herself claiming she had been bitten, but police say aldon smith was gone by the time they arrived. aldon smith is currently under suspension by the nfl.

the 49ers fired him after repeated run-ins with the law. that's when the oakland raiders signed him but the pass rusher hasn't played for the raiders since 2015. here is a neighbor. >> i came out, sat outside to have a cigarette, i seen the police car sitting right here, the one across the street and then the ambulance. and then a few minutes later the two officers came out with the girl and put her in the back of the suv. >> on smith's verified instagram account someone posted a picture of pavement and the letters wtf hold by, quote, o, you are all wrong. neighbors stood and watched as police investigated this case into the night last night. now, smith is under suspension by the nfl. he was waiting for reinstatement, but it looked like his nfl career might be over. we're live in san francisco, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the

bay." now, oakland police are investigating the shooting of a man found walking on a busy interstate. about 6:00 last night people in a car saw that man walking alongside northbound 880 along coliseum and 66th avenue. the good samaritans flagged down police who took that victim to the hospital. chp officers later found an abandoned car nearby. so far there has been no update on the victim or that vehicle. happening today california's lieutenant governor gavin newsom will officially make his bid for governor. he announced it, but he has to file the paperwork this afternoon with the san francisco department of elections and he plans to do that at city hall today. newsom served as san francisco mayor from 2004 to 2011. marin county leaders are renewing efforts to boost protections in the wake of california's recent massive wildfires. tomorrow the county fire chief will join supervisors in hosting an emergency preparedness forum.

it will take place at the board of supervisors chambers in san rafael. the goal is to discuss what communities can learn from the devastating fires in the north bay as well as in southern california. new this morning a southern california couple is talking about this moment when they were trapped in an avalanche of snow and then were dramatically rescued. the video shows good samaritans scrambling to rescue evan huck at squaw valley on friday after an avalanche trapped him and his wife. his wife got free. evan spoke by phone with the "today" show about what happened after he became completely submerged. >> i just tried to slow down my breathing and conserve air and just relax. i ended up passing out probably 30 or 40 seconds after that. >> it took about five minutes for those rescuers to dig him out. they were guided by his snow board which remained at the surface. the hucks are from san diego. they were two of five people

rescued from that avalanche. you can see the entire story in the first hour of "today." also happening today, some big names are in san jose to raise a lot of cash for charity. roger federer, bill gates and the "today" show's savannah guthrie are competing in san jose. it is the first time tennis great federer has visited the city. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell he got a chance to meet with savannah. just about an hour ago to talk about her big matchup. so the question is is she nervous? >> reporter: definitely nervous, but i think she's ready. she feels like right now she's at the top of her game after these weeks of training for tonight's match which takes place just over 12 hours from now at the sap center. the sharks played here last night, there is ice underneath that, but overnight they have been installing this tennis court for tonight's match for africa that will raise money for children's education in africa. savannah guthrie and the "today" show crew were broadcasting here until about an hour ago.

she and jack sock, he is the number one ranked american tennis player, they will take on bill gates and roger federer tonight and as you can see in this video guthrie is taking tonight's match seriously. she's been practicing for quite some time. she is a regular pick up player, she doesn't play organized tennis, went to tennis camp and that sort of thing. her connection is she idolizes roger federer for his skills on the court. the doubles match will only last one set and is described as a friendly competition. >> are you nervous? >> of course i'm nervous. >> about? the results or -- >> first of all, i think the results, i think roger is going to win. >> right. >> this is his charity event, also he is number one in the world. >> sure. >> i'm nervous because it's hard to perform in front of all of these people and to do something athletic. especially the serve scares me the most. i think once the ball is in play

the pros they will make bill and i look good. when you're serving it's just you, you are alone and if it were possible to triple fault i would. >> when i got into tennis and i finally was able to make some money and make a name for myself, there was a way -- you feel fortunate and how do you share that feeling with other people? i just thought that education is something that really interests me because in switzerland we all have an education. it's normal for us, but in the rest of the world it's not always the case and i thought let me get into early childhood education or education in general and here we are. >> the money raised tonight goes to the roger federer charitable fund with the goal of providing 1 million children in africa with a quality education by the end of this year. you have the double celebrity tournament, the match tonight, and then roger federer will take on jack sock in a singles best

saratoga we do have a slower drive because of a crash that has quickly moved to the shoulder. that's unusual for the pattern, though. here is san jose, the rest of the slowing pretty typical here. getting up in towards san francisco we have this crash on the chp the blotter, no more details but 280 northbound at 101 that crash after the car was traveling at a high rate of speed, that's the report and so we will track that. no major injuries reported, in fact, no slowing or injuries confirmed at all. getting over toward the bay bridge is slower drive for westbound 80 but recovering after the earlier crash cleared there. after a gorgeous weekend this weekend in terms of snowfall a lot of folks saying, gosh, maybe i should head to the sierra next weekend. >> more snow on the way as of now for next weekend. the models are showing inn incoming storm system that will bring rain and snow. coast 54 degrees, coast 55. today we are expect to go hit

is happening as you approach the toll plaza. it was a little slower, we should see improvement. we will show you how much coming up. now to a story that may be a major hit to the south bay. more delays possible for bart's expansion into milpitas and san jose. the mercury news reports that project will be pushed back to next year because of delays in testing as well as, quote, breakdowns in communication. not enough personnel. initially vta said that the milpitas and berryessa stations would be open in december 2017. of course we know that has has not happened. according to the meshing it's looking like the stations won't open until next january or march. it is set back for people here in the south bay looking forward to expanding their commute options to places like oakland and san francisco. at one point in time today march 5th was a critical deadline date for hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants, but a recent legal decision put that on the back

pressure starting us off on a dry and warmer note as well. in the 60s, 63 degrees for san jose, 62 for oakland and really if you notice the pattern is upper 50s and lower 60s. even for san francisco. a high of about 58, 59. in the north bay temperatures will remain in those low 60s. now let's talk about our next chance of rain. no rain in sight, there goes that timeline all the way through wednesday and then if i fast forward right around 10:30, 11:00 here comes that next storm system making its way in. let's talk about the sierra snow totals. impressive snow totals, 99 inches at squaw valley. i recently looked at the california reservoirs, right now they are a little bit over 50%, typically around this time of the year they are supposed to be around the 80% mark. we are still needing plenty of rain. if we look at the next seven days it looks like we might just get that. maybe not a big rainmaker out of the storm on wednesday, but we

"today in the bay." a live look at san francisco's bush street right here union square. this is where police over the weekend responded to a domestic violence incident that may have involved troubled bay area football player aldon smith. as nbc bay area was first to report yesterday, police responded to calls about a woman who was allegedly being assaulted. investigators believe that smith may have been the suspect in that assault. so far, however, he is not cooperating and late yesterday smith posted this cryptic photo and message on social media, but did not turn himself in. new this morning there will be extra security today around a san francisco elementary school. the chronicle is reporting that threats were made against rooftop elementary school in twin peaks. this was last week. police say the suspect was arrested in connection with those threats, but then released from jail yesterday. school leaders do believe that those threats are not considered credible. today florida lawmakers may vote on new gun restrictions in the wake of the parkland school

shooting rampage. state senators held a rare weekend session and agreed to advance a measure that would raise the minimum age for rifle sales to 21. they also talked about the possibility of arming teachers, but only those teachers with law enforcement training. santa clara county supervisors are considering bang gun shows at the county fairgrounds. one supervisor said the county only made $6,000 on the last event that they had and he wants to ban that do keep guns off of south bay streets. critics say the shows should be regulated instead of banned. a vote will be held on the proposal tomorrow. looking live at the san carlos caltrain station, blue skies and sunshine right now. reportedly ridership is on the up swing. so far this year there was a 3% uptick in ridership. revenues are $1 million higher as well. at the same time the growth led to overcrowded trains, maybe you noticed you had a little less
