but a drizzly drive across the golden gate bridge right now. visibility is down to about a half mile or less around santa rosa. so through mid morning, we'll see reduced visibilities and at times misty skies and a lot of clouds today. in fact, a little adjustment to the forecast is to bring some of this rain a little bit further north. notice how the totals are higher towards morgan hill area, south of san jose. generally areas south of san francisco and oakland will have the best chance for seeing some light rain at times today. mostly cloudy and kind of a mild finish with temperatures today in the low 60s. we do expect 70s to make a comeback tomorrow and a stronger storm for the early part of the week ahead. we'll talk more about that and maybe snow levels in the sunday forecast. >> surprising. all right. we'll stay tuned for that, rob. thanks. it was a heart breaking end to an hours-long standoff in yountville. all three females were killed.

today in the bay is live outside the yountville facility, with more on those victims and the tragic time line at the nation's largest veteran home. hi, roz. >> reporter: good morning, kira. this was a tragic day. we arrived on campus this morning, all very quiet. but make no mistake about it, see the yellow tape behind me here. this is still a crime scene here and a number of police officers still on the scene here. let's take you back now to talk about how this tragedy got started. it was just before 10:30 yesterday morning when this man, 36-year-old albert wong, entered a room at the veterans home in yountville. about a dozen people were inside. several were let go. but three were forced to stay. and investigators say a napa valley sheriff's deputy exchanged gunshots with wong, but after that, nothing was heard from him or his hostages, despite day-long efforts to contact him. >> shortly before 6:00 p.m. this evening, law enforcement

personnel made entry into the room, where we felt the hostages were being held by the suspect. and unfortunately made the discovery of three deceased females and one deceased male suspect. >> reporter: now, the authorities say wong's rental car was later found nearby. a bomb-sniffing dog alerted authorities to something in the car, but the only thing they found inside was his cell phone. you spoke earlier about those three women, those three women described as brave and accomplished professionals who lost their lives. they had dedicated their careers to helping the nation's veterans. now, they were identified as the pathway home clinical director, jennifer golick, 42 years old. executive director, christine loeber, 48 years old, and jennifer gonzalez, 29, a clinical psychologist, with the san francisco department of veterans' affairs health care system. senator bill dodd, state senator bill dodd, spent part of the evening at the yountville town

halcon soling the families of the three women who died. he personally knew christine loeber. >> a young woman, just in the prime of her life. incredibly professional. and really passionate about helping veterans that have ptsd. >> reporter: now, the pathway program is a nonprofit program geared to helping veterans in need after they have been deployed in iraq and afghanistan. now, again, police still on the scene here. they tell us there are hours and hours of time that it will take to process this crime scene before they have any more developments. as we get more information about all of this, we'll bring it to you. for now, live in yountville, i'm roz plater, "today in the bay." >> roz, thank you for that. we are getting more insight into the police officers' response. they raced to the scene within five minutes of the initial 911 call.

here is the police dispatch right after gunfire erupted yesterday morning. >> a possible active shooter. has a semiautomatic with a lot of ammo. >> you can hear, they still aren't sure if the situation is real. but officers and deputies discovered when they arrived it was no drill. as we mentioned, a deputy traded gunfire with albert wong. people who live at the veterans home were relieved to be allowed to return home last night, but it was a somber return many had hoped for a peaceful resolution after more than eight hours on lockdown. they were stunned to learn the three women at the pathway home had been killed. >> i feel so sad for the three women that met their death from this guy. it just breaks my heart. >> i think it's sad. the people that he killed, they were volunteers. i mean, they didn't deserve that.

>> the tragic events followed a long day of waiting and worrying. many veterans who were on lockdown couldn't get to important necessities like their medications. some family members of older residents had no way to reached their loved ones and had to wait all day to find out if they were safe. and it also was an unnerving day for parents of students who were trapped inside the veterans facility. we spoke with one mother as she reunited with her two children. >> oh, my god, i see them. is that them? that's them! there's my kids! thank god. >> that's got to be relief. what does that feel like? >> awesome. thank you guys. thank you. >> sasha craig's son and daughter are students at justin ciena high school. they and their classmates were rehearsing a play in the theatre on the veterans campus. the students went on lockdown and were safely evacuated. this veterans home of california yountville is right in the heart of wine country.

it's off of highway 29, not far from the famed french laundry restaurant. the pathway home is there on the veterans campus. it's a nonprofit organization that helps veterans, and there is a wait list to get into the prestigious program. "today in the bay's" ian cole explains more. >> reporter: the pathway home, meant to be a step forward for veterans returning from wars in afghanistan and iraq. a critical service that just lost three of its best. congressman mike thompson knew the executive director who was killed. >> and there were three wonderful, professional, talented young women who get up every morning and go to work to help veterans. and sadly they're gone. >> reporter: since opening its doors in 2008, pathway home has helped more than 450 post 9/11 veterans. improve mental health as well as academic, work-related and relationship issues, it's located toward the east entrance of the veterans home of

"today in the bay" explains. >> reporter: this is the uber driver's car still on what would

usually be a very busy i-280. the owner says a white car and another vehicle forced her to stop. then men got out and smashed her windows. >> there was a gun on my head. i didn't want to look. he said just give me your keys and open the trunk. >> reporter: she didn't want us to show her face or use her name. she tells me the robbers took her phone and they also made off with some of her passenger's property. do you think they were after you or do you think they were after the passenger? >> i think after the passenger. >> reporter: tell me why. >> because he was targeted. he's a dealer. >> reporter: according to the chp, this kind of armed robbery is almost unheard of. >> this is not something that honestly happens often, especially not on the freeway. however, we don't believe this was just a random event. >> reporter: uber sent us this statement. we have been in touch with the driver and are grateful she and the rider are okay. our thoughts are with her as she recovers from what must have been a frightening experience.

the driver says this was likely her last trip. >> i know i probably won't be driving any more. >> reporter: neither the driver or the passenger were injured. in san francisco, sergio kin tanna, nbc bay area news. police arrested this man. they say he fled the scene after a deadly hit and run on wednesday. 18-year-old buffen was hit while walking to a friend's house. she was rushed to the hospital where she died. dramatic surveillance video shows part of the crash. an suv went flying across the street, flipping upside down and hitting buffen. she is the seventh person to be killed in a car crash in vallejo just this year. at 7:12, much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a going away party for a popular light display in downtown san jose. we'll tell you why it's being taken away. and our stormranger mobile doppler radar up early this

clouds and fog covering the bay bridge there. a live look for you on this saturday morning. meteorologist rob mayeda will be along in just a bit with a chance of rain today. if you missed it, sorry to say it's already too late. a popular piece of art in the south bay was turned off at midnight. it's called the sonic runway. it went up outside san jose city hall in november. it's the first exhibit in a partnership between san jose and burning man. the goal is to show people the speed of sound as music plays. the artists, both from the east bay, say they were honored to have their work displayed by the city. >> every time i come down here, you know, i bring friends, family. we get to hang out, everyone is in the sonic runway enjoying it. and to think that they're not

going to be able to do that any more is kind of sad. >> the sonic runway will now go back to burning man, but there is a possibility it will return to san jose, in which case i need to go see it. also on the move, a final night in city hall. this controversial statue in san jose will be moved today. the christopher columbus statue will be moved to the italian-american heritage foundation, also in san jose. it's been a fixture in city hall since the 1950s. however, recently an activist group has been pushing for its removal, saying the statue is a reminder of genocide, slavery and colonization. city leaders voted last month to have it removed. the spirit of san francisco's late mayor was a strong presence on treasure island yesterday. >> one, two, three! >> anita lee wielded a golden shovel at the ground-breaking for the life learning academy.

20 at-risk students will live here. mayor lee visited the school last winter and promised to help. >> none more dedicated than my friend, my compadre, than ed lee. ed lee should be standing here right now. doing what i'm doing. >> and the dorms' student gardens will be named after mayor lee. now to an even longer wait at a dmv in the east bay. the oakland office closed last month after thieves pulled copper pipes from the ceiling and triggered a flood. the office was supposed to reopen this week, but will stay closed for one more week. the dmv is honoring appointments at other offices. well, be sure to get your clocks ready, because it's time to spring forward. today is your friendly reminder that daylight saving time begins sort of tonight/tomorrow morning at 2:00 a.m. that means it's time to turn

jose now, 55 degrees. we should see temperatures reaching the low 60s around the bay area today. and check out the visibility, less than a half mile in santa rosa. and you've got some drizzle and some light rain, too, with some of the low clouds around the north bay this morning. temperatures today, mostly low to mid 60s, a lot of clouds and rain at times with the stormranger mobile doppler radar right now not seeing a lot but midday we think this will change as some of the moisture still offshore makes its way inland, though the focus of this particular storm will be across central california and southern california. that is where some of the highest rain totals we'll find around the state will happen later today. but for the bay area, essentially areas south of san francisco, moraga and san jose, you will see the most out of our rain chances today as this system continues to bring a lot of clouds. and midday, right there, you see it. there's a chance of seeing some rain around lunch time. as we head towards the evening, looks like the best chance of seeing showers through about

9:00 will again be around morgan hill. probably why those estimates for rain are a bit higher there for areas south of san jose. and tomorrow morning, that's a look at low clouds and fog to start off your sunday. and it looks like more sunshine to wrap-up the weekend. so our temperatures for sunday will be trending warmer. so notice the focus of a lot of the moisture at this weekend system for southern california. sunday, through the first half of monday looks dry. and now we're talking about a gulf of alaska weather system that will have more wind and rain for the bay area. monday into the early tuesday morning commute. followed by cold air aloft. so this pattern looks like two weeks ago. you'll recall we had snow levels down as low as 2,500 feet or 3,000 feet, even though we're talking march 15th, the air will be cold enough thursday into friday that could set the stage for a chance of seeing some thundershowers and maybe even some low snow levels, maybe close to 3,000 feet on friday. then as we head towards next weekend, we'll begin to see skies clear out a bit.

so today a lot of clouds and a chance of seeing some rain, especially for areas south of san francisco. notice tomorrow, you're going to lose some sleep over that forecast. but the temperatures will be a bit warmer for sunday. monday, we'll have mostly cloudy skies. rain likely. maybe for the end of the evening commute on monday. tuesday looks to be the wettest day with breezy conditions. and look at that transition. 70s going into highs in the mid 50s. that is a air mass change from the mild almost kind of sub tropical connection to the system we have today to that gulf of alaska chilly air which could bring showers, maybe some thunder and some interesting weather. certainly more winter-like as we approach friday. kira, back to you. >> so interesting how it keeps changing. rob, thanks. still ahead on "today in the bay," a new look for the old bay bridge. we'll show how a bay area woman is giving new life.

good morning, waking up to a combination of fog and mid and high-level clouds. in dublin, cooler. also in the 50s, 51 currently with partly cloudy skies. san jose, kind of a mild start. mid o50s now. the high clouds you're seeing part of a sub tropical plume of moisture that even with the overcast condition today we think will still see highs in the low to mid 60s. visibility about a half mile or

so around santa rosa, north bay locations dealing with fog and drizzle this morning. and our temperatures today climbing, again, pretty much low to mid 60s no matter where you go from san francisco, san jose, pleasanton, maybe warmer spots with a chance of upper 60s. notice the chance here of seeing some showers as the on again/off again rain chances seem to have moved a little bit further north in our morning forecast. right now our stormranger mobile doppler radar picking up a few light rain showers in the north bay, but offshore, here's what we're watching coming in over the next let's say four to six hours. you'll see it in the futurecast here coming up. notice how central and southern california is where the majority of the moisture is. we do have an area of rotation here offshore. this is our area of low pressure, which will enhance lift right around midday and even though the bay area really is sitting on the northern fringe of this, we do have a chance of seeing some measurable rain today. notice for a change not so much for the north bay, we are seeing some drizzle and mist this morning. but areas south, especially

south of san jose and santa cruz mountains have the best chance for seeing some of that rain, which we think is going to pick up closer to lunch time. you see the overcast conditions this morning. notice as we fast forward to 12:30, you begin to see the chances of showers increasing, especially oakland and san francisco southward. and as we head towards the evening, now that system is tracking inland across southern california. and as we get into sunday, we start with fog here, all the way into sew lana county and sacramento and mostly sunny skies to wrap-up the weekend. sunday looks warmer and with more sunshine to wrap-up the weekend. so overall, a pretty interesting pattern for once. we're seeing a storm taking more of an aim on central and southern california. we get the break on sunday with 70s and a few spots around the bay area. and then monday into tuesday, this next system is a gulf of alaska system, and the cold front will bring up the winds for your tuesday morning commute. notice the rain estimates quite a bit higher than we're expecting this weekend. monday night into tuesday system

could add a third of an inch to an inch of rain. that will be followed by some very chilly air similar to two weeks ago when we had those hail and graupel showers around northern california. could see a slight chance of thunder. but a chance of snow, down to 3,000 feet as the coldest air arrives on saturday. as we head toward next weekend, things clear out. so pretty interesting seven-day forecast. one, you're going to lose sleep tomorrow morning. of course, remember the time change. but we'll lose some cloud cover tomorrow after the fog clears. and we'll see 70s for highs, even monday as the clouds start to fill in. but monday night and tuesday, breezy conditions. and look at that drop, almost 10 to 15 degrees cooler. in fact, a few spots thursday and friday, could see some highs in the low to mid 50s as we finish the weekend in the 70s tomorrow. kira? >> wow, a little bit of everything next week, including one less hour of sleep. rob, thanks. 7:48. still ahead on "today in the bay," coming up, you know to beware of hackers on your home computer. but there is a new warning that could compromise your personal

hotels. hackers have new tricks to steal your personal info ... a new warning about wi-fi at hotels. hackers have tricks to steal your personal information. they spy on your every move. so how can you protect your privacy? nbc national investigative correspondent, jeff rossen, has tips and a dramatic experiment in this morning's "rossen reports."

>> at this resort in cancun, guests are on their phones. what they don't know, there's a hacker here using a new trick. ease creating a fake wi-fi network. but making it look like the real one from the hotel. >> so we're at the resort right now. and their wi-fi access point is fiesta rewards. we set up fiesta rewards pool which makes people think hey, we're at the pool, it must be a stronger signal down here, i'll use that one. when you log in, hackers can spy on your every move, and steal all of your personal information. as we watch, guest after guest connect to our fake network. thinking it's the real thing. >> you can see right now there's someone name sharon, cody. they both have iphones. >> and you're watching what they do. >> monitor everything they're doing right now. >> i'm going go try to find them right now. >> good luck. >> the hotel is in on it, but no one else is. is there a sharon here? you're sharon? >> yes. >> what wi-fi are you on? >> fiesta rewards pool. >> that's the hotel wi-fi? >> yes. >> what if i told you that's

actually not the hotel wi-fi and our spet security expert can monitor everything you're doing right now on your phone. >> that's frightening. why would you want someone to know your personal information? >> even down on the beach, people are logging in. cody? >> yeah. >> there it is. fiesta rewards pool. >> that's pretty unsettling, being on vacation. that's pretty scary. >> but what information can the hacker really get? i test it out. >> i'm watching everything he's doing in real-time. i'm going to buy some gloves for when i get back home. for the cold. >> he just entered in his visa information. his visa card number is -- >> and then i'm going to log into my e-mail. >> he just logged in. there is his e-mail address. and there's his pass warword. >> so how do you protect yourself? use your cell carriers 3g or 4g when banking or shopping. it's more secure. and ask the hotel for the name of its wi-fi and shut off the auto join function so your phone doesn't join a fake network without you even knowing it.
