i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have full team coverage for you this morning as we track the latest storm to hit the bay area and we want to begin with forecaster vianey arana. >> you notice that that moisture that we saw originally off the coast now fully making its wei-yin land and that's exactly what our storm ranger is tracking right now. it is sitting on top of san bruno mountain scanning the latest information that comes in. we can see a lot of those showers now are focused towards the east bay. if i zoom in on this you can see mobile doppler radar there. where you're seeing the red and yellow hue colors light up, that's where the heavier pockets of rain are. as i head over towards the east bay, get ready, oakland, berkeley, emeryville getting some of the heavier downpours, alameda will see some of the downpours. oakland is following a little bit of that shadow, but 880 seeing downpours. the peninsula right now not really seeing too much rain in redwood city but just behind
6:01 am
that the showers moving through highlands and half-moon bay as well. look at that red and yellow hue, we are definitely expecting to keep the light to moderate showers for the next couple hours. we have to check in with mike. vianey, you showed than to the radar the bay bridge toll plaza that was just off i-80, the berkeley curve, there you see it right here on our live lenses. look at that rain coming down, a little bit of an angle and getting all these folks with slick roadways, slippery and tough to see out there. we do have a lighter flow coming off of 580 right now. that's the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. here is the radar activity all around the bay that vianey showed. so the heavier activity pushing off the east san jose hills, but we also have all that yellow right there by that bay bridge toll plaza where i just showed you the camera and the rain coming down. we also have the green highlighting where the rain has hit in the last half hour. it's pretty much all over the bay you will have slick conditions. we had this crash and now a

closure for northbound lanes, 280 north towards saramonte. checking on injuries but we do know there is a closure for another five or ten minutes. 101 through that similar area is moving smoothly. 101 in san jose has traffic start to back up with slick roadways there. ethan was over in san bruno. you see that rain that is hitting the windshield. so major breaking news coming into our newsroom just in the past 20 minutes or so. president trump confirming in a tweet that he will replace secretary of state rex tillerson with cia director mike pompeo. the "washington post" first reporting this news at 5:40 this morning. gina haskell will now lead the agency pending pompeo's confirmation by the senate. she will be the first woman to
6:03 am
hold that post. scott mcgrew monitoring everything that's coming in, he's going to join us with analysis in just about two minutes along with a look at the president's visit that is coming -- he's coming to california today. he is set to depart in just minutes. here in the bay area that rain, it is coming down. back to our microclimate weather alert. the north bay getting hit hard by this storm right now. >> pete suratos continues our team coverage from lucky drive in marin county this morning. pete, how are things looking out there right now? >> reporter: well, marcus, the rain has let up a little bit, a slight drizzle, but what we've all morning on lucky drive it's been very windy along with on and off showers. you can still see because of the rain that we've seen in the past hour you've got a very slick freeway right now. you want to be careful when you're driving not only here on 101 north near lucky drive but anywhere pretty much around the bay area where they've seen radio. i'm going to show you two pieces of video, the first one is on
6:04 am
the golden gate bridge, that was what the bridge looked like about an hour ago with the rain coming down, the slick roadways there, and then we will show you another new piece of video, this was on 101 south going towards millbrae. so probably going towards the san francisco airport, you can see how the roads are there. with the rain coming down earlier this was from previous earlier about an hour ago you see the conditions in that video. let's bring you guys back out here live, we're covering the north bay off of lucky drive. you see as these cars are coming by on the morning commute you've still got slick roadways because of the rain so you want to be careful. drive carefully, give yourself some distance as you're driving this morning on your morning commute. we will continue to monitor the conditions. we're seeing a slight drizzle or maybe the rain is picking up a little bit more. we will have another update in the next half hour. live near luck kree drive, pete suratos, "today in the bay." we want to take another look at our radar this morning. you can see all of that green on
6:05 am
the screen meaning that rain is hovering over us. >> we want to bring in forecaster vianey arana. going to be a soggy day ahead. >> it is. even though i know pete isn't seeing the heavy downpours right now we are still expecting light scattered showers. if i show you our storm ranger you can see it's picking up some showers along the peninsula and south bay in san jose right now, cupertino. i do want to take you through future cast. in the next half hour it will move further away from where pete is but behind that we have a couple pockets of moisture. we will see it pushing further off to the east by about 7:00 a.m., napa will continue to see some showers, walnut creek, through the fremont area and this line of storms is pretty interesting because as it continues to move out, right behind that if you notice by about 10:00 a.m. we will see periods of showers yet again and then into the evening the rain isn't expected to make a complete exit, right until the 4:00 hour we are expecting
6:06 am
another chance of seeing some scattered showers. so definitely don't get caught off even if it stops for a few minutes. >> take that radar in the palm of your hand with our free nbc weather app. track the radar, pinpoint the storm where you are. it's free for iphone an android dwroo back to breaking news for you this morning. u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson is out. this comes just hours before president trump is set to arrive here in california. >> scott mcgrew joins us with new information we've learned just within the last few minutes. >> this is a shocker indeed. the wast post the first to report it, but seconds later the president did tweet, here is that tweet, announcing that rex tillerson is out. mike pompeo the director of the cia will become the new secretary of state. now, was tillerson tired or did he quit? at this point we don't know, but we do know his departure comes just hours after tillerson criticized russia for the use of
6:07 am
a nerve agent in great britain. the president has not criticized russia. theresa may the prime minister in great britain gave russia 36 hours to explain itself, a direct accusation. strong words summoning russia's ambassador, but, again, nothing from trump. we don't know if these two things are connected but we can definitely say the ouster kamt hours after tillerson's action. you may have seen on the president's tweet he elevated the deputy directors of the cia to director, that would be the first female director of the cia in american history. all these people need to be confirmed by the senate. it will be interesting to see how the senate reacts to the ouster of tillerson. in the middle of all this the president is on his way to california, san diego specifically, to meet marines at miramar and then check out these prototypes of his wall then off to beverly hills. this will be his first visit to california as president. as candidate mr. trump visited
6:08 am
several times once this san jose where his supporters were attacked by anti-trump activists. san jose police were criticized for not stopping it fast enough. and then there was a republican convention in burlingame near sfo, the crowds forced trump's motorcade to go around the back of the hotel ballroom as he was scheduled to speak, this was in the summer of 2016. he actually had to climb a wall and fence to find his way into the speech. now, all of this comes with some good news for the president and that is the house intel committee cleared him of collusion. now, we have not seen the report nor have the democrats so we can't say much about it, but in a single day we think he fired the secretary of state, he's definitely out, he's going to come again to california and the whole house intel thing, just in one morning. >> i know. it really was within the last hour or so. a lot happening always. that's why we always stay on top of the president's visits, his tweets, everything that's going on. you can join us by joining us for our midday newscast as scott

been tracking it all for us this morning. as we look at that radar, vianey, the question a lot of people are wondering is this something that's going to come in and move out quickly or will it hover over us for a while. >> within the next couple hours don't expect the system to go anywhere. as a matter of fact we're seeing showers pushing in from what was originally the coast, now you can see it moving into richmond and the oakland area. this is our storm ranger sitting on top of san bruno mountain. along the peninsula we're seeing some showers there, as i push on over towards the south bay, san jose, campbell not seeing much of the rain. we're seeing some pockets where it's not raining at all. we can expect to see on and off showers. this is our regular doppler radar, we can see we've got plenty of rain left behind and we're expecting this to continue at least for the next couple of hours into the afternoon when we will see another chance of seeing some more rounds of rain.

catching some of that rain. another thing that we've also seen aside from just the rain and the pockets of showers is the strong gusty conditions. we've seen some of those stronger winds reported for san francisco and the north bay, gusts up to 40 plus miles per hour have been reported, but right now look at santa rosa, 20 miles per hour, orinda 22. we will see these die down a bit by about 8:00 a.m., still on the breezy side, and then it gets a lot calmer as we head in towards the afternoon. so definitely gusty out there, but at least the temperatures are not cold. they are actually on the rather mild side. 61 degrees right now in san jose, hayward also at about 61 degrees, oakland 58 and over the next seven days we will get another chance of seeing more rain. we will catch a slight break from the rain for a couple hours, then we will see it pick up again with the chance of seeing scattered showers. as we head in towards wednesday we will see another storm system move in, then we will get a little bit of a break. once again into thursday and friday we will see more rain move in and those showers look like they may linger as we head

in towards the weekend on saturday. another thing you will notice is a drop in the temperatures as we head in towards the weekend. we will go from upper 60s in some parts today in towards the 50s. let's get a check of the roads with mike. i'm going to take your notes, your radar notes and show folks what's going on. above the roadways look at all this activity, darker green over here and the yellow behind me and the red, that's where things are more intense. that's what's going on over there. brentwood behind my head and over just crossing over through daly city, san mateo and south of san francisco we have a lot of rain. over the water that translates to all these conditions, wet roadways all over the bay. san mateo northbound 101 let's take you to visit with our friend ethan. he's driving around on the roadways. more folks on the roadway, definitely slick conditions, look that water hitting the windshield so it can be tougher to see at times. just be careful. lower the speed as ethan is, very manageable. back out to the maps and we will show you overall we are looking

coverage with forecaster vianey arana. >> did you see how windy it was in the santa cruz mountains where kris was? that's what we've seen all morning long is gusty conditions in the hilltops and along the coast. storm ranger is up and scanning on top of san bruno mountain. you can see where the pockets of yellow and red are. right now redwood city starting to get light to moderate showers as i forecasted that rain was moving in. there goes half-moon bay as well, highland seeing some showers, down here the south bay, cupertino, saratoga, campbell, we have small spots, this is storm ranger so it gets down to surface level, which is really good, it gets that high resolution information coming in. doppler radar, this is our regular radar, is also catching some of those showers. if you notice in san jose we're seeing some showers start to trek off to the east and the winds right now, it's still pretty gusty out there at about 18, 20 plus miles per hour. for the higher elevation areas we have seen reports of gusts up

to 40 plus miles per hour, areas like the north bay and mt. diablo. if you notice by 8:00 a.m. we see gusty conditions turn slightly breezy, so we will start to see the winds die down a bit, san francisco 12 miles per hour, orinda 13 miles per hour, livermore 15 miles per hour and if we fast forward through tonight we will see kind of a change in the pattern, it will pick up and then die down, it will pick up and die down, that's because we're tracking another line of showers moving in. at least into the dinner hour. right now it looks like the 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 hour we have a chance of seeing more showers spark up here and there. current conditions, we are still seeing mild conditions, so at least it's not cold out there because when you combine cold temperatures, whipping winds and rain it doesn't make for good conditions. we are in the 50s and 60s but i know that it's still wet out there so let's check in with mike. >> you may need to use that defogger in your car. over here we are in ethan's car,
