6:01 am
the peninsula. pockets of rain may also become quite heavy and by this afternoon we could be tracking a few storms. so i will have more details on that coming up in just a few minutes. mike, you've been tracking the impact out there on the roads. really leftovers is the key. rain traveling through leaves wet or damp roadways. we will have damp roadways over in this area south bay and heading up into the east bay. more rain coming in off of the coast. that will be affecting the peninsula a bit. over here we have more rain with the road weather index showing the greens taken off the radar and that will be through concord. highway 4. over here south county in problems. highway 17 to and from santa cruz over the summit, your typical slowing north 101 through san martin. no delays up to morgan hill. a new fender-bender reported for highway 101. i will give chp a couple seconds to update me once they get to the scene. 101 through the north bay no delays. a little build highway 37 best.

us light rain by late morning. we are filling in with cold temperatures as this rain arrives. this is going to create more disturbed weather and potential of a couple pop up thunderstorms as we go throughout the day. our highs will only reach into the mid 50s. it's going to be breezy, cold and at times wet. i will be tracking that rain and we will talk more about how much more will be on the way. mike, you're saying there is not so many spinouts reported on the road. >> only a couple and they've mostly cleared from the lanes without injury. looking at the radar as well, scattered blobs as kari showed you most of that activity north, maybe concord and across the benicia bridge. we show the road weather index shows wet roadways up off the east shore freeway and maybe through concord and crockett. over in the south bay you will have damp conditions. we do have this crash, more detail came in, north 101 at story road. your fast lanes blocked. three, maybe four vehicles involved in the crash but we

giving us the highest resolution view of where that rain is falling. i will take to you highway 4. that rain is approaching pittsburg within the next few minutes. we can see the yellows and reds there and also that rain where it's been coming down in concord. still light rain, but it's about to get lighter for you, you can head out the door with better travel conditions. i took off storm ranger and are showing you the flfrs radnationr service radar. you know that this is several minutes behind. but this just shows you the level of detail that you get with storm ranger and we are the only ones with this tool. as we go throughout the day i'm also tracking this next storm system moving in. here is an area of low pressure, we can see the clouds and the rain and this is causing this cold air to be forced up into the atmosphere and when it does so it causes some rain and we will also have a chance of some thunder and lightning today and some small hail. the best chance will be later on
6:21 am
this afternoon. we still have this large area of disturbed weather and we are not going to get rid of all of this rain until this all pushes off to the east and that doesn't happen until saturday. so we will have some waves of rain. today most of the rain looks pretty light. about a quarter of an inch of rain or less. we will have more rain moving in tomorrow with another disturbance moving in and this will also bring in very cold temperatures, a cold storm, but that's good because that means some sierra snow. we are going to see lots of snow falling in the sierra and then it starts to taper off on saturday. sunday is looking dry and another storm next week. briefly mention sierra snow, look at how many inches this forecast, this computer model is putting down. we may see up to 57 inches of snow in parts of the sierra. so looking really good. and then once again sunday is your only dry day in this seven-day forecast. as we head over to mike, you've been tracking the impact of those wet roads on drivers. that's right.
6:22 am
i guess sunday appropriately named this week. looking over here right now damp roadway day in the morning but not a major problem. let's bates of radar activity showing that's not really a concern. the wet roadways further north, the east shore freeway, watch concord, highway 4 down toward the walnut creek interchange. south bay a little slowing for north 101. concord the result of that rain having traveled through the area, but this is relatively light for a tuesday. travel times under a half hour for the bay bridge toll plaza. we had that backup forming on pace and it's still there as you travel out to the maze and san francisco. we don't have any major problems. just that backup and wait coming off of palo alto. silicon valley also moving at speed. back to you. >> thank you very much. coming up this next one has a lot of people upset. outraged after a family was told

victims of the school shooting in parkland, florida. today marks one month since the shooting. >> teenagers are demanding stricter gun control and an end to shochool shootings. pete suratos is live explaining how local school districts are preparing. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris and marcus. we know that these walkouts are scheduled to take place for about 17 minutes around 10:00 a.m., that's of course to honor each of the victims that passed away in that parkland shooting. the big issue is districts support students but also know it could be a disruption to class. there was an issue at the milpitas unified school district specifically behind me at milpitas high. on monday the superintendent sending out a letter saying she supports the students but doesn't condone the walkout saying specifically in that letter that, quote, leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and

responsible way to work for change. at that time she said any student choosing to participate in a walkout would get an unexcused absence. but yesterday the superintendent apparently had a change of heart saying students at milpitas high will not get an unexcused absence for taking part in any walkout. it will be supervised by staff members and they will only walk a few blocks away from here to the milpitas police department. most schools say they will take part in a moment of silence for 17 minutes, also have class discussions throughout the da i with counselors, but that walkout is set to take place at 10:00 a.m. live in milpitas. pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> a lot of students standing together across the nation this morning. we are starting to get live pictures into our newsroom showing the various student walkouts happening in different parts of the country. walkouts are beginning now along the east coast. you see the camera there placed on the ground as the students are there in the distance. this is what we call a pool camera so we don't control it,
6:36 am
but we did want to give you a look at what's happening across the nation. plans for the nationwide walkout originated of course in parkland, florida. that is the site of last month's deadly school shooting. survivors have been very vocal about their desire for gun reform and changing law. >> we know what we're talking about. it's not just me out here but all of this well informed students that it is our job to be educated, it is our job to be informed and know the future. >> we're just trying to go to school without getting shot. >> every student should be able to go to school and feel safe and secure. >> today's walkouts are not the only demonstrations the students are planning. student activists are planning for a march for our lives next saturday, the main event is in washington, d.c. but there are similar events scattered all across the country. and we have confirmed that students from more than 100 bay area schools will plan to participate in today's walkout. you can see a full list on our website nbcbayarea.com. we will have a team of reporters

across the bay area today at those schools watching for those developments. if you are participating and you want to get your message out, you can actually tag us in your photos as well as that video on facebook and twitter. also, nbc news will also bring you a special report, that's coming up at 7:00. in other news san francisco's police commission will meet today to consider equipping officers with tasers. city leaders have debated a taser policy for years and then last november the police commission finally approved rolling them out by the end of this year. acting mayor mark farrell has added a new sense of urgency to the debate calling for a june ballot measure. he will continue to push for a ballot measure until the commission approves a new policy. the commission may hold a vote at tonight's meeting. remembering the victims of last friday's veterans home shooting, this in yountville. police in brentwood will hold a vigil at 7:00 tonight organized by contra costa county supervisor diane burgess.
6:38 am
there are still questions about the response from authorities on the day of that shooting. some wonder why it took law enforcement nearly seven hours to storm that building. everyone including that gunman was found dead. chp is leading that investigation and so far not commenting. all right. folks, we are looking out to the roadways, the rain having traveled through much of the bay and continuing with light impressions on the radar. we don't have much of an issue as far as the active rain. damp, slick roadways. .careful. things are a little tougher in the east bay having had the most recent rain. i'm looking at the south bay where we have a couple crashes. northbound 101 at tully the more recent of the two, the other at story is blocking possibly parts of the hov lane and at tully we may have one lane blocked. that's why there's mild slowing up to the scene, farther south northbound through the south county not even any slowing for 101 coming up into morgan hill through san martin.
6:39 am
then the east shore freeway we're just under a half hour, marcus, barely under a half hour down from highway 4 over to the bay bridge. that's good. unless you're in it. >> i know. anytime you see yellow -- >> better than red. >> that's right. >> wednesday and we're making it closer to the weekend, but with that rain moving through you're like, okay, i just need to get through today. let me show you the radar before you step out the door. storm ranger we have it scanning around and showing those showers moving through much of the east bay, even a couple popping up on the peninsula. our weather pattern stays unsettled through saturday and that means that we could still have some rain but this will be the last of it. by saturday morning we will start to see this rain wrapping up, but look at how cool it's going to be, only reaching into the low to mid 50s throughout the day on saturday. on sunday that's the day to get outside. we will see inland areas reaching into the low 60s.
6:40 am
some mid 50s by the coast. of course it's not st. patrick's day unless you're celebrating in dublin. the parade starts at 9:30 in the morning. unfortunately there is still going to be a chance of rain and look at how chilly it's going to be. so not only do you need to be prepared for the rain but also dress warmly as the day goes along that rain will start to clear up. in santa cruz not bad, i think the rain will get out of there a little bit earlier, but we are only going to reach into the mid to upper 50s. if you need a beach day make sure you have on lots of layers. if you are going to the sierra it is looking amazing, but a lot of snow coming down so you better plan on a lot of extra time getting there and then that snow wraps up by sunday. we will talk about what's going on for today, another view of the radar coming up in three minutes. thank you, kari. coming up next on "today in the bay," breaking news out of england. dozens of russian diplomats ordered out. they are about to be expelled. the penalty after a former
