a live look outside in san jose on the right-- it )s dry thursday morning and guess what, more rain is on the way. a live look outside in san jose right now. dry for now. we can see from the radar rain off the coast. it's good, though. we need it. >> marcus sounds thrilled. >> i am. >> carry his umbrella way up high. good morning, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. one thing i did note, it is colder outside. >> oh, yes, it's cold and damp, too. that makes it feel even colder. it gets right to your bones. that's the chill you'll have. it's still dry as we look at storm ranger. you can see the red beam and the rain still well to the north of us moving through ukiah.

a look at those temperatures. we've got some mid-30s in the north bay. lower 40s. our highs reaching into the mid to upper 50s for the inland areas. very chilly along the coast. we'll talk about when that rain arrives in just a few minutes. mike, a crash into a fire hydrant? >> we have some wet roadways, kari. there may have been a dusting of snow. it's pretty far south. not a commute route as folks come over to tesla. we're looking here. the freeways are looking great and water on san pablo avenue just off the offshore freeway. this is san pablo, a food max and a smart and final. the concern is the car crash is there into the fire hydrant. two vehicles are involved. it does sound like there are injuries. you'll avoid that one area. there will be a little traffic control. we'll watch that for any other

reports. the freeway is open over to the bay bridge which is looking great right now. the cash lanes just backed up and they should clear over the next 21. we'll track that minor delay. back to you. >> thank you, mike. new this morning terrifying moments at san jose state university. this morning the search is on for more victims after a violent sexual assault on campus. >> bob redell with a warning that's going out to students. bob? >> reporter: laura and marcus, this warning came in the form of an e-mail from the police chief. sending this out to students. basically he's looking for any other witnesses or perhaps survivors of this alleged sexual assault. a few cases that took place here on campus. the police chief did identify the suspect. his name is luis. he's 21 years old. a fourth year student who lives on campus. this according to the e-mail

from the police chief. an investigation revealed there were two more victims. he was arrested two days later. he now faces charges of sexual assault, assault with the intent to commit sex crimes, false imprisonment and sexual battery. police say all three assaults took place in cva and the suspect and victims knew each other. we checked online this morning. records indicate he is still in jail and scheduled to appear in court later this morning. we also checked in with the u.s. department of education this morning looking at their online records to get a sense of how severe the problem may or may not be on local bay area campuses. the latest numbers from 2016 for reports of on campus rape according to the department of education at san jose state university in 2016, there were six, stanford. 59, uc berkeley.

54 cal state/east bay. 20, sonoma state. 9 reports of on-campus rapes. reporting live here outside san jose state university, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 5:34. san leandro high school will be closed. school leaders say a threat prompted a lockdown yesterday. it came during the student walkout. investigators want to take a look at the threat before letting students back on campus. they indicated the threat of gun violence. pete suratos is at the school right now. he'll join us with a report. >> stun guns given the green light. police officers are one step closer to being armed with tazers. late last night the commission voted 6-1 on the policy regulating how officers would use the tasers. 40 hours of crisis training before they're allowed to carry one. there are other regulations for those officers for when they can use the devices as well.

the plan is to have them in the field by december. students at monterey county's seaside high school are making a push to save the job of a teacher. the instructor accidentally discharged a handgun inside a classroom on tuesday. students say dennis alexander was leading a gun safety demonstration when it happened. one round struck the ceiling. falling debris struck students. he's now suspended from teaching and the police department. the district says he was not authorized to have a gun at school. students are asking the district not to fire him. happening today at 4:35, the surveillance video from the florida school shooting will be released later this morning. the footage reportedly shows sheriff deputy scot peterson responding but never going inside. a video will be released at 9:00 a.m. pacific time. the judge ordered the release on

monday after news organizations petitions the court. the sheriff's office and the school board about did not want the video released. >> the trial continues for the widow of the pulse club shooter. n the trial began yesterday. prosecutors say salman gave a, quote, green light to her husband omar mateen. 49 people were killed as well as mateen. the defense claims salman was a devoted mother and was repeatedly lied to by her husband. representatives of the salman family spoke to reporters outside the courthouse yesterday. >> in america people should not be punished for the crimes of others including their relatives. >> we want to respect the families of the pulse victims but a woman is on trial for her life here. >> during opening statements

prosecutors said they will prove eight days before the pulse shooting mateen and salman went together to scout out another location as a potential target. the defense once again argued salman had no idea what her husband was up to. we've been talking about the next story, closing time. the end is near for jeffrey the giraffe. when toys 'r' us stores will close for good. plus, falling from grace. the new charges elizabeth holmes is facing.

thanks contessa i'm contessa brewer live. today's top business headlines, wall street set to open mixed after stocks slumped, the dow falling for a third straight session. after president trump said he'll seek to trim the trade deficit with china through tariffs the dow fell 248 points. the nasdaq 14. toys 'r' us has filed to liquidate stores after failing to find a buyer. the move will put 30,000 people out of a job and is expected to close 735 stores for good by the end of the year. toys 'r' us is in talks with interested parties about combining up to 200 top perform stores with its canadian operations. a spokesperson says gift cards

looks like it will. as we start out this morning we're taking a little bit of a break. let's check out storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar and that's the red beam you're seeing going around the bay area. we still have the rain well to the north of us and it's moving through ukiah and that will be approaching santa rosa as we go throughout the next several hours. as we take a live look outside in san jose, here's what to expect, 42 degrees. it is chilly as you head out the door. we're only going to make it to 56 degrees today. we do start out with dry conditions. some clouds moving in. we'll have a chance of some storms. as we go into tomorrow that scattered rain continues and it looks like it lingers into our saturday as well. getting dressed this morning you do need to start out with making sure you have that rain gear, the raincoat and the boots. as we go through the day the rain will be arriving. let's go through the time line,

we start to see the rain moving into santa rosa for much of the morning commute while taking the kids to school. it will start the rain in parts of the north bay and it will take a while before it makes its way into the south bay. mostly late morning, early afternoon will be the time line and then we'll just see it off and on throughout the day into tonight and tomorrow as well. our weather very disturbed. we're still going to see some showers in the forecast. heading into saturday it looks like that rain could hold on a little bit longer throughout the day and then by sunday into monday it is all dry and then we'll be watching another storm system early next week. we're looking at the potential of getting about a quarter to about half an infor the bay area. it could be much higher for parts of the north bay. mike, you're tracking a crash in the santa cruz mountains. kari, this happened earlier this morning. it was still there for chp for a cummins. now i think it should be cleared from lanes by the time you get

on the roadway because, of course, right now you're watching -- unless you're in a car. southbound 17 right around hebron road. good stuff. a smooth drive heading in from santa cruz. that area for 17 and 101 out of the south county. gilroy and morgan hill. a smooth flow of traffic in toward san jose. no major delays. our longer drive out of tracy, a mild slowing. typical as 205 and 580 make their merge. you get past the dublin grade. i'll check with chp and see what they say about that. the speeds haven't come down on these travel times or getting through the north bay. a nice and smooth flow of traffic. at 4:48 right now a developing story to tell you about. a bay area woman goes in for plastic surgery and dies just

hours later. this morning police are investigating as her devastated friends and family push for answers. "today in the bay" has her story. >> reporter: delma pineda, a mother of two, flew to south florida to have several cosmetic procedures and stayed with her friend, cindy barahona. she says employees at the surgery site sent pineda to get a pre-op ultrasound at a different location. the center was closed. when they came back they proceeded with the operations anyway. after the one day surgery for breast immigrants, liposuction, and a tummy tuck she says pineda was in pain all night moaning until she collapsed around 4:00 a.m. she later died at the hospital. longtime friends back here in the bay area couldn't believe it. >> everybody is devastated. a big loss.

>> reporter: family members tell me they want justice and set up a go fund me to bury pineda and help in the fight. the cause of death is under investigation. cg cosmetic surgery sent a statement saying in part it is our preliminary understanding the events giving rise to this incident are unrelated to cg cosmetics services. we are closely monitoring this case and will facilitate any and all investigation into the cause of this incident. ian cole, "today in the bay." florida records show the doctor who performed the procedures is licensed. pineda has two children ages 17 and 4. she will be buried tomorrow. it is 4:50 right now. we have new details on what united airlines says was a misunderstanding that led to the death of a french bulldog puppy that was stored in an overhead bin. the dog died monday night on a flight from houston to new york. a criminal investigation is now

under way. united now says the flight attendant did not understand the dog was inside before ordering the carrier to be moved. english is not the dog owner's first language. other passengers say they find it hard to believe the flight attendant was not aware. either way the airline has announced a new policy so pets in carriers will be more easily recognized. new this morning police and animal control teams spent the night setting traps scouring the campus of cal state los angeles. that's where a coyote attacked a 5-year-old boy. police say that boy was bitten in the leg and is receiving medical treatment. it's believed the police officer shot the animal which then took off. >> we do believe the coyote was struck, so we are asking the public if they see an injured coyote or even if they see a deceased coyote that they would notify the department of public safety. >> now that attack happened a little before 7:00 p.m. the animal was shot one hour

later. and more details for you. we want to take a closer look at just how frequent the coyote attacks happen on people. according to one extensive study they're pretty rare, over nearly a 40-year period researchers counted 165 coyote attacks. that's about four per year in 121 cases at least one person was injured. that included 78 adults and 74 children. coming up next on "today in the bay," challenging net neutrality rules. what one state lawmaker is propose that go could set up a showdown between california and the federal government again. happening now, north korea's foreign minister is visiting sweden today. a surprise move that could have been a first step in a meeting between the president and kim jong-un. sweden has diplomatic relations with north korea since 1973 and is one of the few western countries to have an embassy in pyeongchang.

the state level. the fcc is ending the requirement next month. it requires companies to treat all internet traffic equally. san francisco state senator introduced the foo ledgnew legi on tuesday. if pass it is could lead to a challenge in court. the bay area 2020 plan is up for revision. the plan lays out goals for combatting issues facing our region. the association of the executive board will look at costs and improving traffic on highway 101 in san mateo county and an update on the housing crisis. happening today we honor law enforcement officers throughout the state. >> the 55th annual law enforcement appreciation day event is happening in fremont. this remembers those we've lost in 2017. it's a lovely tribute. marcus and i will be the emcees in silicon valley from 10:30 to
