pattern as we go throughout the day. take a look at storm ranger this morning. rain starting to make its way into northern sonoma county and being picked up there nicely. the high level of detail that's just offshore. we'll be tracking that with more rain possible throughout the late morning commute for the north bay. the rest of the bay area will see that rain developing by early afternoon continues to become a lot more scattered, and we will have the potential of some thunderstorms popping up today. another chance of a few of us seeing lightning and small hail. we'll talk more about that and what's ahead as we get closer to the weekend coming up. mike's getting you out the door for a look at the morning commute. >> and relatively calm. the conditions are great for driving right now. check on this crash that popped up.

coming down from the top of the screen, a car went off the roadway and up a hillside there. we'll track it to make sure they didn't have any updates. back to you. >> thank you, mike. a threat in the east bay high school keeping students out of class today. school leaders at san leandro high school say they want to investigate this further before letting students back on campus. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live with what we're learning about that threat. many of those students were participating in the walkout today. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. good morning.

students were remembering the victims in the parkland shooting as well as hoping to get a chance to talk about gun control, but these lockdowns happened just yesterday morning. now the superintendent put out a letter saying that lockdown took place after students reported graffiti in one of the bathrooms indicating a potential threat of gun violence. the school was declared safe by san leandro police. shortly after just around 1:00 p.m., a supervisor discovered threatening graffiti on one of its bathrooms which led to a lockdown of the school. determined there was no threat to students. they were dismissed at their regular time but still these lockdowns are a cause for concern. >> mom, someone threatened us on

school. they have us on lockdown. please come get me. >> reporter: now i want to point out the district is not closing john mir because the incident is being viewed as a copycat incident. san leandro high indicated violence would occur today. no weapons or guns were found in either incident. we're live in san leandro high, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest, pete. we mentioned the threat came during widespread walkouts across the nation and here in the bay area. students showcased their message to end gun violence both on campus and social media. we've been getting a lot of pictures and videos. these came from a student in pleasanton where students pay tribute to each victim killed. the display will be kept on campus for 17 days.

>> new this morning closing up shop. toys 'r' us is preparing to close all of its stores in the u.s. after failing to restructure billions in debt. that move puts about 30,000 people out of jobs. kris sanchez is live with the widespread closures about to happen. a sad day. >> reporter: for kids and those of us who used to be kids, we have fond memories of going to toys 'r' us with parents or grandparents. this will be the hardest on the people who have to look for new jobs. a bankruptcy hearing scheduled today. a company spokesman said the chain is looking to liquidate, that is close or sell all of its 800 or so stores in the u.s.

if you have a consumer and have a gift card spend it as soon as possible because remember when borders closed a couple years back, customers sued for reimbursement and a judge said no. some stores posted going out of business signs back in february. those stores could be closed altogether by april. toys 'r' us has about $5 billion in debt and increasing competition from online retailers. what is your favorite memory? there are 28 bay area toys r us and babies r us stores. we'll track those as the bankruptcy hearing happens later today. >> thanks, kris. 5:05 right now. new this morning overnight nbc

news obtained audio of president trump boast iing. during a fund-raiser in st. louis trump says he told trudeau the u.s. runs a trade deficit with canada. the u.s., in fact, has a trade surplus with our neighbor to the north. here is the audio of what trump said last night. it was obtained from a republican donor. >> donald, we have no trade deficit. everybody else, you know, was getting killed. i said, well, justin, you do. i had no idea. >> nbc news has reached out to the white house for a comment on the president's remarks but has not heard back. police officers patrolling foothills and the community college are equipped with body

cameras. the department issued the devices yesterday. they were funded in part by a grant from the department of justice. police say even though the use of force among officers is virtually nonexistent, the camera will still provide more transparency. morgan hill police now say a 63-year-old homeowner is under arrest after an explosion jou outside of his home. about 12 homes were evacuated. the homeowner now facing several felony charges. happening today berkeley leaders are set to discuss new housing near the north berkeley b.a.r.t. station. that city's mayor, a councilmember and b.a.r.t. director, are set to present their ideas. as we previously told you a state senate bill currently under consideration would allow apartment buildings near mass transit to be taller. and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. it's not christmas.

as it starts up filled with wet roads. only 39 degrees on the peninsula. 46 degrees for san francisco and 36 degrees in the north bay. the rain just to the north of us. kept the temperatures down today. showers off and on throughout the day and our highs in ukiah only 48 degrees while 56 today in san jose. so we'll talk more about the timing coming up. >> we have that crash scene. most of the bay looks great right now. this is on san pablo avenue near kirk lane. not expecting the on and off ramps.

snow coming down, look at these temperatures only reaching into the mid-20s. 258 inches. it will continue throughout the weekend with the potential of another 38 inches of snow. >> and the bay bridge clearing over the last five minutes. the lanes near the bottom of the screen, all the toll ticket arrive on the right approach. a couple lanes close that had will start to clear up before it backs up closer to 5:30. and a very good thursday to you. you heard about toys 'r' us, right, from our kris sanchez, closing its stores. shares of mattel are lower on that news this morning.

i-heart radio will still operate. the president has picked larry kudlow from cnbc to be his next chief economic adviser. the president enjoys cable news, gets much of his information there. kudlow has a long tv career but has worked for the reagan administration and the new york fed. he's been both democrat and republican. you heard elizabeth holmes has been charged with what the fcc is calling massive fraud. claiming to make a machine that could detect dozens of diseases in a single drop of blood. she dropped out of college to invent something that nobody ever thought could be invented and she got a lot of attention. we see her with then vice president joe biden. investors were right in giving

her company millions but, of course, it wasn't true. agree to give up the company, pay a fine and promising not to in the future. there is a criminal investigation by the branch of the fbi. "the wall street journal" was the first to ask, how can this be true? will be on today. >> many got faulty results because the company itself voided almost a million blood tests in arizona and california. >> an employee chant that we get together. >> really? >> really. one other factor i want to throw in front of you, jim mattis, was a board member as late as january of 2016.

>> i think people waiting for the coffee are going to have to wait because the line will be out the door. have the umbrella before you step out. we have storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar parked on a mountain in san bruno and that's the red beam you're seeing going out starting to pick up the detail of some of that rain starting to approach northern sonoma county, and we do have some rain in ukiah, clear late, even some light snow for the elevations 2,500 feet. we still have this large area of low pressure. it's forcing that cold air to rise and also producing a few thunderstorms, too. look at how cold it is this morning and it's colder this morning than yesterday with some

upper 30s to low 40s. as you go through the morning drive throughout the south bay, we'll start to see the sun peeking throughout the morning. make it into the mid-50s today. i think the rain in the south bay could get started as early as 10:00 this morning. put that in the plans for today. we're going to reach up to 62 degrees in san francisco. san jose, 56. also, 56 in antioch and concord. still rain off and on today as well as tomorrow and some low elevation snow and then as we go into saturday it's still going to be raining, and that may linger. the rain would clear by saturday morning but it may hold out a little bit longer. at least sunday and monday are looking dry before the next storm system moves in. by the end of the weekend about a half to possibly up to an inch of rain around the bay area.

mike is tracking that trash clearing in castro valley. >> it involves a big rig, kari, off 580 right around eden canyon road. a little slowing is expected. west 580 is moving off the roadway and it should be cleared the next few minutes. one more vehicle there at the scene and we know about that. over here the crash cleared southbound 17 right around the summit. smooth flow in both directions into and out of santa cruz. through morgan hill, a smooth drive in towards the rest of silicon valley. for the bay bridge a smooth, light drive. traffic a mild pace throughout the east bay but at the toll plaza itself we've just seen the start of the backup. things are filling in. metering lights the next few minutes. 5:21. up next on "today in the bay," a mass exodus.

at 5:25 if you're looking to buy a house in the bay area you probably know this one too well, the hunt to find a bargain. it's leading them to a so-called mass exodus. this in sacramento. bay area realtors say they are scouring for deals on housing. that area attracting tech workers looking to make their money go further. >> the same price in the bay area so why not retire here. >> you don't quite have the workforce. that is starting to tilt in the other direction because the bay area migration is largely early 30s, mid-30s, and technically skilled people. >> buying a home is only one piece of the puzzle. realtors say u-haul trucks are harder and harder to rent because demand is so high.

palo alto's planning commission is addressing the city's lack of affordable housing. last night's vote was 4-3. basically the proposal will have limited restrictions to encourage below mark rate housing development. opponents say the plan needs more work before it's approved. a new survey out this morning is shedding an alarming light on children and just how often they accidentally take medicine that is lead to poisoning. the report finds a child under the age of 6 ends up in the emergency room every nine minutes because of medical poisoning. nearly 7 in 10 parents reported storing medicine within a child's sight. a campus crime alert, new this morning, the warnings san jose state university students after a violent sexual assault. the search to find more victims this morning. plus, arming police officers with tasers.

and then that rain is not going to make it any warmer. >> not at all. the winds are picking up and the rain makes it feel chilly. it's starting to pick up a very high resolution view of that rain as it moves into the far northwestern corner of sonoma county and the rain moving through ukiah and clear lake. elevations above 2,500 feet. that rain pushing through the south as this storm system rolls in and brings us another wave of wet weather. mike, you have video of that major crash in richmond. >> i want to show you this video from a little while ago. the hydrant was busted.

we're hearing about a chp pursuit and pete suratos will get us more details in the next few minutes. that's the scene. the fire hydrant spouting high into the air. live pictures there. our photographers arriving. it sounds like they turn everything off as far as the hydrant or minimized the flow. we have a crashed vehicle and emergency vehicles on scene. that's why san pablo avenue is closed. it moves smoothly, there's a food max, a shopping center we're talking about in the area. traffic control around that intersection. the metering lights have been turned on and the rest of the bay moves smoothly. we will continue to follow the crash in richmond.

right back to you, laura. >> thank you, mike. 5:31. terrifying moments at san jose state university. the search is on for more victims after a violent sexual assault on campus. "today in the bay's" job redell with a warning that's going out to students. good morning, bob. >> reporter: an e-mail going out, the police chief is asking for witnesses or perhaps even survivors to help them in the sexual assault investigation. they've identified the suspect as a student named luis, 21 years old, a fourth year student who lived in campus village a here on campus. the first alleged assault took place march 3rd. there were two more victims. he was arrested march 5th. and now faces charges of sexual assault, assault with intent to commit sex crimes, false

imprisonment and sexual battery. police say all three assaults took place in cva and the suspect and victims knew each other. he is still in jail and is scheduled to appear this morning. we checked online with the u.s. department of education to see how common or uncommon rapes are on bay area campuses and these are the latest numbers from 2016. these are the number. san jose state, six. cal state east bay, eight. sonoma state university, nine. san francisco state university, 20. uc berkeley, 54. stanford university, 59. again, those numbers on campus reports of rape just for the year 2016. reporting live outside san jose state university, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you.

police officers are one step closer to being armed with tasers. they voted 6-1 on a policy regulating how they would use them, 40 hours of crisis training before they are allowed to carry one. that plan is to have those tasers in the field by december. >> it's 5:34 and continuing coverage this morning, students in monterey county seaside high school making a push to save the job of a teacher. the teacher accidentally discharged a handgun on tuesday. students say dennis alexander was leading a gun safety demonstration when it happened. one round struck the ceiling and falling debris injured three students. he is also a reserve police officer. he's suspended from teaching and the police department. the district says he was not authorized to have a gun at school. students have now launched a petition drive asking the district not to fire him.

>> footage reportedly shows sheriff deputy scot peterson responding to the building where the shooting was happening but never going inside. the video is expected to be released at 9:00 a.m. pacific time. the judge ordered release after news organizations petitioned the court. the sheriff's office and school board did not want it released. also in florida the trial continues for the widow of the pulse nightclub shooter. the trial began in atlanta yesterday. prosecutors say salman gave a green light to her husband, omar mateen, to carry out the attack in the club in 2016. 49 people were killed as well as mateen. representatives of the salman family spoke to reporters outside the courthouse yesterday.

>> people should not be punished for the crimes of others including their relatives. >> the victims and friends of the pulse victims but a woman is on trial for her life here. >> prosecutors say they will prove eight days before the pulse shooting mateen and salman went together to scout out another location as a potential target. the defense argued salman had no idea what her husband was up to. >> the bay area 2020 plan is up for revision. that plan lays out goals for combatting traffic and housing issues. today the association of bay area government executive board will look at the cost and the scope of improving traffic on highway 101 in san mateo county. the board will get an update on how local governments are dealing with the housing crisis. happening today we honor law enforcement officers throughout the state. >> the 55th annual law enforcement appreciation day event is happening in fremont

it's 5:43 on your thursday morning. it's not raining yet for most of the bay area but storm ranger is on it and it's starting to pick up on some rain for northern sonoma county. that will be pushing to the south. it's dry right now as you step out the door in san jose. and a little bit of sun but a chilly start. rain gets here as early as 10:00 this morning and will be off and on throughout the day. this is what we can expect not only today but tomorrow and possibly your saturday. all of that in less than five minutes. and the scene of the crash in richmond off the east shore freeway. closed here because of a major injury crash. we'll talk about the traffic flow through the area.

thank you, kari and mike. it's 5:43. police and animal control teams spent the night setting traps where a coyote attacked a 5-year-old boy. police say the boy was bit in the leg and is receiving medical treatment now. it's believed a police officer shot the animal which then took off. >> we do believe the coyote was struck so we are asking the public if they see an injured coyote or even if they see a deceased coyote they would notify public safety. >> the attack happened before 7:00 p.m. the animal was shot about an hour later. more details looking closer at the frequency of coyote attacks on people. they're pretty rare. over nearly 40-year period researchers counted 165 attacks in california. that's about four per year. at least one person was injured

that included 78 adults and 64 children. >> new details on what united airlines says was a misunderstanding. this is related to the death of the dog that died monday night on a flight from houston to new york. a criminal investigation is under way. united says the flight attendant did not understand a dog was inside before ordering the carrier to be moved. english is not the dog owner's first language. other passengers found it hard to believe the flight attendant was not aware. the airline is announcing a new policy so that pet carriers will be more easily recognized. california may consider adopting net neutrality rules at the state level. they are ending the federal requirement next month. it requires companies to treat all internet traffic equally. san francisco state senator scott weiner introduced legislation on tuesday. experts say it could lead to a challenge in court. new this morning president trump says he made up facts to support his trade agreement and

it's on tape. >> the president says we have a trade deficit with canada but we don't. >> we do not. good morning. the president said we did. he told the prime minister of canada we did. in fact, the president was just making that up and he actually admits he was making it up in a speech in st. louis last night. we don't have video but we have audio. you'll hear the president say the good looking guy and justin, the president referring to canadian prime minister justin trudeau. >> the good looking guy comes in, donald, we have no trade deficit. i said, well, justin, you do. i don't even know. >> so, to be clear on what the president is saying, he told the leader of canada we have a trade deficit with canada. when the leader of canada said

that's not right, our president insisted it was even though at the time he did not know that factually. he was, according to his own words, guessing we did because in his own words, canadians are smarter than we are. and then admitted the whole thing in a public speech. this obviously puts world leaders in a pickle. how do you negotiate with somebody who makes up facts? how do you do a trade deal when the numbers are false and the guy giving you those numbers knows they're false? as we try to figure that out we're trying to keep an eye on the situation between great britain and russia as well. the british prime minister accuses russia of using nerve agents, chemical weapons, against the former spy in a small english town. this reaction from nikki haley. >> let me make one thing clear from the very beginning, the united states stands in absolute solidarity with great britain. the united states believes

russia is responsible for the attack on two people in the united kingdom using a military grade nerve agent. >> this is the scene of that attack. a former russian spy, his daughter, and a british police officer were sickened. great britain said it would kick 23 russians out. i urge you to follow me on twitter and like me on facebook. >> this week an oakland elementary school gets a blast from the past. >> they had to read 200,000 minutes. the reward, the class gets to open a time capsule found on the school's original site. this is cool because it's from the 1920s. the facebook video the teacher says they will open it tomorrow. that would be cool, though.

i wonder what they would find, old newspapers? a top hat? who knows? >> what will we put in it today? that's a good question. i don't know. we've had rounds of rain moving in and it starts out dry now but we'll have more rain developing as we go into the afternoon. we're the only ones with this tool and it's a radar truck. we have parts on san bruno mountain giving us high detail and high resolution look at what's happening as the rain falls from the sky. right now northern sonoma county up through ukiah, you head further north and starting to see the rain coming down. and this is dropping off a few lightning strikes offshore and

we will have a chance again of seeing some lightning and small hail and scattered showers that will be rolling through as the day goes along. it's just cold, that damp cold. make sure you're wearing something nice and warm especially the rain jacket. it will be rainy. here is a look at the rainfall forecast. we start to see it becoming more widespread later on this morning. more people get up and out and about. kids may have recess inside because there will be some rain developing into the east bay and south bay. we could see a few storms and it continues throughout tomorrow. even on saturday we're still going to have this weather system lingering across the region that will bring us more chances of rain.

richmond district campus. the school wants to demolish four one-story buildings as well as parking lot spaces and tennis courts. construction would begin as soon as july. clearing convictions for pot across california. clearing the record for people convicted of marijuana-related crimes since recreational pot is legal in the state. prosecutors and public defenders are doing the same. the d.a. says they have identified more than 700 cases since 2009 where someone could be eligible to have the record cleared. this would remove barriers for people who have had trouble finding jobs or housing because of their record. they pass prop 64 and decriminalize a lot of the defenses and reduce the penalty for some. >> people who qualify for relief
