rain is coming back and we can even take you down to street level and show you what storm ranger where that rain is occurring right there on east julian street and also on park avenue. going to be tracking this moving off towards the east as it heads toward berryessa. mike, you have a warning for bart riders. folks if they drop off at bart station 16th and mission that station is not currently open. you will have to walk eight more blocks over toward 24, the civic center station, there is a small power outage, small section in that area, reported by pg&e, that's what's affecting the station. weather wise no affects on the transit system. good news for bart and other trains as well as the ferries. we have a lot of rain, slick conditions wherever it's green and this crash now only blocks two of your five lanes, but look at the slowing west 80 approaching snan pablo dam road at least two people are dead

after a driver slammed into a tree on communications hill. >> kris sanchez live on casalino drive where this happened. >> reporter: the crash scene is behind me and what you can see in the distance there is a fire truck. the fire department had to come back out to the scene with special equipment to try to extricate the two victims who died in this very violent crash overnight. what we know is that the roadways were wet at the time, we don't know if that was a factor, but it appears that the driver was driving very, very fast. now, the car went off the roadway before crashing into that tree near the top of communications hill. if you've been up here you know that these roads are winding and they are narrow, they're tough to navigate if you don't know your way around here. at this point investigators are telling us the driver was likely speeding and a neighbor tells us the crash was so violent that she walked out to find the engine block on the street away from the car. >> i heard this like crash

sound, it was really, really loud, and i saw smoke covering the entire street. so i started to worry that someone may have got hurt. >> reporter: so even as we're here right now the ground is still wet, it was likely wet at the time of the crash right around the 1:30 hour. we can't confirm that that was a factor. now, two people in the car did go to the hospital. we don't know what their conditions are this morning, only that they were headed to a trauma unit, the other two are here on scene and san jose fire is trying to extricate them. only when the investigation is complete will the coroner be able to remove their bodies and notify their next of kin. one of the neighbors did say that when they came out to the crash site this morning they did see a puppy near the crash site, that puppy was rescued, we don't know anything more about that, but we will keep trying to track the conditions of the two people who went to the hospital and mind out what the cause of this crash was. in san jose, kris sanchez,

"today in the bay." >> very tragic. thank you. at 5:02, new developments out of florida this morning as rescuers frantically tried to search for more victims after yesterday's horrifying bring collapse in miami. six people are now dead, ten others in the hospital after being treated for their injuries. "today in the bay's" wendy woolfolk live in miami where the investigation, where is it going to go from here? look at that destruction behind you. it's so sad. >> reporter: it's very bad, laura. good morning to you. the death toll indeed rose overnight and could go even higher. the rescue operations have now turned into one of full out recovery. rescue crews worked through the night searching the rubble of what's left of the 950 ton bridge. the pedestrian walkway still under construction came crashing down on to a busy street thursday crushing cars and people under massive concrete slabs. >> we've been working throughout

the entire night. >> reporter: searchers are drilling holes and using dogs to find potential survivors. at least eight cars are crushed under the bridge. it's believed people were working on it when it collapsed. >> that bridge, whatever is left of it, is very, very unstable. so we have to be very careful as they're moving stuff. >> reporter: the pedestrian bridge intended to make crossing the busy road below safer for students was set in place just five days ago. witnesses could not believe what they saw. >> it was like an explosion. it was like a bomb. it was right behind us. and, you know, it could have been us under that bridge. >> reporter: the bridge was built using a method which was hailed as being faster, cheaper and safer. it's builder says the company is cooperating with the investigation. a team from the national transportation safety board is in miami to lead the federal government's investigation.

"today in the bay's" pete suratos live near the scene with new information. we just learned about those shots fired. pete, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. that shelter in place was just lifted when we got here just at about 4:00 a.m. now, according to san leandro police they're saying this all was tied to a

bigger auto burglary investigation being conducted by fremont police and they found that second suspect right behind this arco gas station across the street from bayfair mall. this was the scene when it all took place roughly around 9:00 p.m. now, according to san leandro police they're saying that fremont police was conducting an auto burglary investigation in fremont, but they tracked the suspects all the way to san leandro. they're saying those suspects were two adult males. they tracked them to the san leandro bayfair mall right in the parking lot of the 24 hour fitness where they say the suspects were getting ready to break into cars. they called san leandro for backup and when san leandro police approached the subjects they claimed that they rammed into the police cars and a chase ensued. that chase extended across the street where we're standing so they crossed the intersection at hesperian boulevard. when the car stopped those suspects they said that fremont police when they tried to arrest them one suspect apparently grabbed a handgun and lift it

had towards cops and that's when officers fired shots at both of those suspects, hitting both of the suspects. they were able to immediately arrest one of them on the scene but then they said one fled the area which led to that shelter in place that they had there for a few hours, but they said with the help of especially trained dogs to pick up human scent they found the second suspect hiding in the bushes near the railroad tracks behind me at this arco gas station just before 2:00 a.m. now, i want to point out both of them are getting treatment at a hospital, but they are in custody. the san leandro police are still looking to locate the handgun in all of this that led to that officer-involved shooting but san leandro police tells me they are going to continue to be on the scene for the next few hours. live in san leandro, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. it's 5:07. there are new allegations against a san jose all girls catholic school under scrutiny for months. the claim is that the principal failed to report sexual misconduct this time involving a performing arts teacher at presentation high school. now, the news comes as presentation announced success

in an annual fundraiser so fundraising is still happening at the school, quite successful despite all the allegations coming out. $126,000 twice as much as last year. in a statement released critics of the school say administrators ignored sexual abuse allegations. that teacher was later convicted of child molestation and pornography charges. now, we reached out for comment for presentation high so far has not responded. the investigative unit first broke the story about sex abuse allegations dating back decades involving numerous schools and teachers. the alumni director called the previous claims misleading and said it was nice to see they did not make a dent in the school's reputation. just into our newsroom new details on that stormy daniels scandal. she is the adult film actress who is linked to an affair with donald trump, she was paid to keep quiet. her attorney told msnbc's morning joe anchors that stormy

good morning. >> good morning, guys. wall street features have turned red this morning indicating a slightly negative opening. the dow broke a three day losing streak yesterday to close 115 points higher at 24,873, the nasdaq closed lower by 15, it's third negative session in a row. today investors are looking for data on job openings and consumer sentiment. google says it found no evidence of a significant gender pay gap for 89% of its employees worldwide, but google's findings were limited to job categories with 30 or more employees with at least five men and five women. the analysis excluded 11% of employees mainly composed of top executives and often that's where you see the big disparate. the news comes as google is being sued by former employees for underpaying women. march madness is officially under way and there is one player that might top anyone in the tournament. a team of toyota engineers debuted a basketball playing robot named q which uses

anywhere from marin county on southward for the bay area this morning. i want to take you to the peninsula because our storm ranger mobile doppler radar taking you down to street level and showing you exactly where it's raining. just north of redwood city we're seeing that rain on 101 and also highway 82. it's closing in on redwood city. right now just some light showers. also in san mateo. going to take you on the other side of the bay where we are seeing that rain approaching antioch right now. as of right now brentwood is dry, but expect that rain to arrive in the next few minutes. you have got a little bit of a window to get out the door. we still see this area of low pressure bringing in a lot of sub tropical moisture and still really cold temperatures. this is another cold storm, our highs today only reaching into the 50s with those breezy winds and times of rain it's going to feel much cooler than that. much of the rain will be coming through throughout the morning and early afternoon just off and on once again. so you just have to watch out

for those breaks in the sunshine and we should get a little bit more of that as we head into this evening right around dinnertime. which is good for the evening commute. we are still going to have some rain and unsettled weather throughout the day tomorrow. we were talking about all the parades and celebrations going on. here is a look at our forecast for tomorrow. it still shows a lot of green on the radar, meaning rain, and some sierra snow, but it does clear out in time for sunday as well as monday and possibly more significant storm system will be headed our way for the middle of next week. mike, you were giving us a soggy look at the bay bridge. >> you just said more significant storm possible next week. we will watch for that. right now this is significant for your morning commute. slick roadways, soggy conditions, lighter friday commute, but that sometimes means folks are traveling at a higher speed and that's not good with slick conditions. the issue getting to the bay bridge despite the light traffic there it's over a half hour from highway 4 because before you get

team's first ever coliseum game april 17th, 1968. the east bay times says request for tickets blew away expectations. nearly 300,000 people signed up, the stadium only hits 60,000. ticket vouchers have been sent. if people end up no showing those seats will be available on game night first come first served. >> you have to keep going to the games. one oakland leader pushing to make the sight of straws less common in the trash. she says there are several times with one time use plastic straws. for one they cannot be recycled. they're also not biodegradable. all too often people to get them don't even want them or plan to use them. the measure would require restaurants and bars to require plastic straws only when customers request them. half a billion plastic straws are discarded globally every day. it turns out california's new pot tax may be too

excessive. forcing state lawmakers to consider lowering it. some brothers and sellers say high taxes are keeping many customers in the black market because it's simply cheaper. the state impresses a 15% tax on marijuana then local governments add more tax on top of that. some lawmakers are considering a bill to lower pot tax. it's not clear if and when that will happen. new this morning americans like to drink, that's not really new, but we're seeing fresh research out overnight showing just how much. this is the first of its kind study released by the cdc. it shows one in six american adults binge drink once a week having an average of seven drinks per booing. men consumed 80 first of those binge drinks. young adults are more likely to binge drink. adults over 35 who do binge drink actually drink more than younger people. coming up next on "today in the bay," we're following breaking news in the south bay. new this morning an overnight wreck in san jose leaves at least two people dead. we are live with what happened

widespread the rain activity is right now and that translates to the road weather index. all this green, it's wet all over the bay. slick roadways. we do have one crash in the tri-valley, west 580 over at isabelle. it's only blocking one lane, it happened a while ago, but i have just seen this backup really start to build up back to north 1st, continues on towards stanley. folks familiar with that know it's a popular cut through so some folks are getting by without much confusion or much of a problem. we will track that. that's the slowest spot for the tri-valley. for the upper east shore freeway this is the jam past he will so bran day, a crash blocking your left two lanes at san pablo dam road causing a slow down and making the drive from highway 4 almost 35 minutes already on this light friday. breaking news on this friday morning, u.s. military officials confirm seven american service members have died in a helicopter crash in iraq. it happened last night. officials say the crash does not appear to be a result of enemy activity. another u.s. helicopter was in

that area, reported that crash. iraqi security forces and coalition members secured the scene. no word yet on the identities or even home towns of the americans killed. 5:32. more breaking news. at least two people are dead after a driver slammed into a tree overnight in san jose. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live off the scene of casalino drive with what we know. good morning. >> reporter: this was a very violent crash. we just saw the san jose fire department leave. they had to come out with the jaws of life in order to get out the two victims who died in that car. right now the tow truck is here trying to remove that car from the scene so that this roadway can reopen. the car went off the roadway after it crashed, it crashed into a tree near the top of communications hill here where we are and if you've been up here you know the roadways, they are winding and they are narrow and at points they are steep. at this point investigators are only telling us that the driver

was likely speeding. a neighbor tells us when she looked out her front door the street was filled with smoke and when that smoke cleared she saw something in the middle of the street. >> it was the engine from the car. i saw the car hit the tree and then fell off the street and crashed on the hill. >> reporter: now, i can tell you that the ground is still wet this morning. it was likely wet around the 1:30 hour. we can't confirm whether or not that was a factor. two people in the car did go to the hospital. we don't know what their conditions are at this point. again, the other two were removed, they just left in the coroner's vans, their families will now be notified. one of the neighbors tells us they found a puppy near the scene of the crash here. we don't know the condition of that puppy nor of the two people who are now in the trauma unit likely fighting for their lives. this was a very violent crash. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. it's 5:33 right now.

a developing story this morning, a frightening case of vandalism leading to around the clock security at the san jose teachers union building. police are saying someone threw a molotov cocktail on to the roof on tuesday night. fortunately no one was hurt, but it is the latest in a string of vandalism targeting the teachers building. earlier this month someone tried to break a window with a pipe, then days later someone left an open propane tank under a front window. so far no arrests have been made. another bay area school plans to keep students from attending class today. another violent threat was found scrawled on a bathroom wall. leaders at martinez junior high school have canceled classes along with after school activities. classes will resume on monday. school leaders added the threat that was found does not appear to be credible. happening today, the city of vallejo expected to announce a seven-figure settlement to a woman whose kidnapping police initially labeled as a hoax. you may recall it, police

suggested the story told by this woman, denise huskins and her boyfriend aaron quinn was made up. but really she was kidnapped. a man drugged and assaulted the couple in quinn's home. she was held for ransom, later released in southern california. now three years later sources say vallejo has agreed to a $2.5 million settlement for huskins and her now fiancé quinn. the city is not expected to admit wrongdoing. stanford university provost is speaking out about the healing garden that's being created on campus where brock turner sexual assaulted an unconscious woman. the garden has come under scrutiny after the survivor backed out from allowing the university to use a quote from her letter to the court on a plaque. provost persis drell writes that a statements would not be supportive for other survivors. the university suggested other quotes from the letter but they were rejected. drell also writes the assault

has changed the university forever. we have new details now on a story we first brought you as breaking news yesterday on "today in the bay." we now know two people who had been found in oakland's lake merritt were dating. earlier this morning witnesses say they heard a fight early morning between a man and a woman, that couple seemed to be drowning in the lake. officers jumped in to save 39-year-old michael grace, he was unresponsive, though, died at the hospital. then they found the body of 24-year-old tonya johnson. police say her death is being investigated as a homicide. his death is considered accidental. continuing coverage now, we now know more this morning about a marin sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty. it's a story we started covering yesterday at 11:00 a.m. since then we've learned his name is ryan zirkle, age 24, engaged to be married. the department says he crashed into a tree on his way to an emergency call. the sheriff says the pavement

was wet, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation. nebs of law enforcement escorted his body to a funeral home. people who watched the emotional procession felt that loss. >> it's heart breaking, a young family, too, right? just starting out his life. it's so hard to get someone that's willing to put their life on the line to serve the people. >> zirkle grew up in novato. he graduated from san marin high. funeral plans have not yet been announced. crews reportedly adding a new layer of safety for cyclists along one busy san francisco street. the examiner reports work started yesterday on a planned bike lane for -- with barriers for valencia street between 15th and 19th. the barriers are present to keep cars from double parking in valencia's dedicated bike lane. when they do cyclists have to go into traffic. cyclists protested to get the city to make that change. longer term safety solutions still in the works. happening tomorrow, the luck of the irish will not help you

if you drink and drive. law enforcement agencies will of course be out there looking for drunk drivers. aaa once again offering that tipsy tow service to keep drunk drivers off the streets, it's free. and the department of alcohol, beverage control says its agents will be out in force in bars making sure minors don't drink. san francisco will be among the many bay area cities celebrating the irish all day tomorrow. >> everybody is a little irish tomorrow. >> absolutely. >> if you can believe it. the city will hold its 167th annual st. patrick's day celebration. according to city lure, the first was held in 1851 in hayes valley. the parade starts on second street. the party will continue with a festival until 5:00 at night but we're sure other parties will continue. numerous transit lines and streets will be impacted. big crowds always gather for that one in the city. also make sure that you've checked for maintenance on your leprechaun. looking toward bart, this will

be an issue. if you head out toward bart you get dropped off at the 16th street station. you will have many blocks to walk back to the 24th street or civic center stations over there because the power outage in the area. very small, has caused that station to be closed. doesn't sound like it's weather related but pg&e reports that problem. the rest of the transit agencies move well, no delays for the ferries or for golden gate or san francisco bay ferry. all that rain on the radar translates to wet roadways, the upper east shore recoveries, slow through richmond, a crash 580 at isabelle slows you through livermore, still blocks one lane. >> lots of green. >> you finally see the weekend. the weekend is here. >> a lot of green on the radar just in time for st. patrick's day. hoping to see some rainbows, too, because we get -- >> no i just want the pot of gold. >> that's what we're trying to give, the pot of gold. right now we have liquid gold falling from the sky for us.

we are still seeing some rain, scattered showers rolling through as we track your morning and getting you out the door tomorrow we will still have some times of rain, but i think most of it will start to taper off as we head throughout the day on saturday. so a lot of it will be early and it's going to be a cool one, only reaching 52 degrees for the coast. on sunday we get a lot more sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures, only up to 61 degrees for those inland areas and for the bay at 57 degrees. a mix of sun and clouds. we just talked about this, a lot of people heading out to san francisco for the parade, starts at 11:30. be prepared that there could be still some times of light rain and temperatures only reaching into the upper 40s and low 50s. we continue that celebration on sunday. in dublin though the parade is on saturday but you can still go to the celebration on sunday with some dry weather and reaching into the low 50s. so it's going to be a nice one ahead there. going to santa cruz this weekend it's still looking pretty soggy

it's 5:44 now with some rain moving mostly across the south bay, east bay and the peninsula as we track it with storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. san jose dry, also dry in los gatos. the streets are still wet, but rain not falling at this point. it's going to be moving in off and on rain throughout the day. you can see all of those rain drops and highs today only in the mid 50s. we've had plenty of rain but not yet a good atmospheric river, but that could be in the works. i will talk about it in five minutes. look at these travel times

for the tri-valley, we have slowing for 580, the volume of traffic is light around the bay, the problem in the tri-valley is the crash. we will give you the update where and how you can get around that. thanks so much. it's quarter to 6:00. happening today the suspects charged in the stabbing death of a woman left for dead last month on tesla road are scheduled to appear in court. investigators say liz andrea was still alive when killers dumped her on a remote stretch of tesla road. she managed to flag down a car. authorities say she identified her killers moments before dying. authorities in modesto later arrested the man and woman that you see there. they're facing charges. more trouble for airlines. this time southwest is accused of kicking a father and his two-year-old daughter off a flight because the little girl was too afraid to sit down in her seat. other passengers came to the father's defense, it was captured on video of course. >> we all need to understand the operation, unfortunately, and --

weekend, we're looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. you may get it. we're going to see some of those showers continuing to roll on through. storm ranger is tracking it all. that's our mobile doppler radar. that red beam you see coming out of san bruno mountain. as we get a closer look here is what's going on. most of the rain has been from areas south of san francisco and extending off towards the east and san jose right now not getting rain, but it's heading in that direction. making its way through the east bay right now. as we get a closer look we can see exactly where the rain is falling. this gives us a very live view of the rainfall. we will take this off and show you the national weather service radar, kind of gives you a general area, it's not as detailed and actually about five to six minutes behind our storm ranger radar. so we are tracking it second by second for you, seeing the rounds of rain coming through. it's just going to be wet throughout the morning off and on and also for much of the afternoon as this area of low pressure the storm system

continues to spin rain and showers into the bay area throughout the day and much of the day tomorrow, too. it's only going to reach into the mid 50s for in afternoon, lower 50s along the coast. getting dressed this morning make sure you have the layers. of course, the rain jacket is needed and the boots. some good options to make sure you try to stay dry today as well as tomorrow even as you head out for those st. patrick's day events. it looks as though even as we go into tomorrow afternoon here is the time frame, 4:00 we could still have some rain in and around the bay area, sunday is dry, monday is dry, as well as much of tuesday, but we could possibly be tracking a much deeper plume of moisture, we call it an atmospheric river and that's just a steady stream of subtropical moisture rolling into the bay area, which will mean a lot more rain for the end of next week. we're still cheering it on. let's head over to mike to see if we're cheering about the traffic. we're giving a little bit of

happy results because tri-valley here. first of all, looking over here showing you all the activity. all that rain activity left we had roadways. i will show you the road weather index. the green highlighting where you will have slicker conditions, pretty much every major proceed way in the bay. this major roadway for the tri-valley should improve, though. slow as you approach first street getting over towards isabelle where the crash has been cleared the last of the lanes there. westbound your commute does slow. folks over first and stanley can get through town a little quicker. that will also be the last to clear. here is a live look at the slicker roadways, watch the off ramps around the bay. there will be slick conditions and that could result in more spinouts. recovering highway 4 to the bay bridge, west 80 recovers because that crash did clear at san pa lob about a half hour ago. coming up next on "today in

at 5:55 happening today a man accused of killing two fremont women more than three decades ago is expected to face a judge. 57-year-old david emery misch is accused of killing 18-year-old michelle xavier and 20-year-old jennifer duey in february of 1986. the women who were best friends were found dead along mill creek road near mission boulevard. misch was already serving an 18-year sentence for a homicide

in alameda county in 1989. dna evidence linked him to the two other killings. he is due in court at 9:00 this morning. new this morning a hate crime investigation under way after death threats were made against the lgbt community in our state's capitol. two letters were sent to the community center in sacramento. the letters arrived on wednesday, one letter talked about destroying or murdering members of the lgbt community. now, begin the recent mass shootings in the u.s. the potential warning signs before them, the community center and police are taking the threat very seriously. >> we saw the pulse nightclub massacre. >> it's important for us to stay vigilant and watchful and take every one of these letters or notes or calls seriously. >> police haven't said what's in the second letter but officers do believe those letters are connected. new video into our newsroom showing a lengthy chase in southern california. started about 10:30 last night east of los angeles, went on for

more than an hour. police received a call about a domestic violence incident, possibly involving a child. eventually located the suspect who led them on that chase all the way to camp pendleton. the driver sped down interstate 5 and hit speeds of up to 90 miles an hour until a tire fell off the car. officers later used a pit maneuver and took that driver into custody. here is an interesting one. home surveillance cameras are now allowing some home sellers to watch and listen to the buyers conversation with the realtor inside or outside the seller's home. some of those systems have motion detection so it can alert a homeowner when a buyer and a realtor are inside. >> okay. so let's say this is a listing, you've got a beautiful house, it's been staged. what are the chances that somebody is watching right now? >> probably very high. >> and what are the chance that is somebody is listening? >> probably very high. >> so you can listen with these cameras. >> absolutely. and we don't know where they
