i went nevada. >> you are still in it. we have much more on the big upset in just a moment. >> first let's get to our top story this morning, the firing of fbi director deputy director andrew mccabe just two days before he was set to retire from the bureau. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has been following this story all night for us. pete, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the attorney general says that andrew mccabe mass fired for repeatedly misleading investigations about his actions, but mccabe says this is the result of the administration's war with the fbi. andrew mccabe stepped down as the fbi's deputy director in late january and his actual retirement date was tomorrow, but late friday attorney general jeff sessions accepted a recommendation from the fbi itself that mccabe should be fired after 21 years of service. the fbi recommended firing him over his decision to let fbi insiders talk to a reporter during the presidential campaign about the investigation of the clinton foundation. attorney general jeff sessions

said mccabe made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor when asked about it, including under oath on multiple occasions. and justice department officials said 19 other people have been fired from the fbi in the past year for lack of candor. mccabe was a frequent target of twitter attacks from the president who called him a comey friend and urged sessions to replace him. the white house spokeswoman thursday added her criticism. >> we do think that it is well documented that he has had some very doubling behavior and by most accounts a bad actor and should have some cause for concern. >> reporter: in a statement mccabe said he had full authority to speak to the reporter and did so with fbi legal approval to clarify that the fbi was continuing an investigation that people in the justice department opposed. mccabe says he's being singled out because he supported james comey after he was fired. mccabe cheered the agent ranks by saying at the time that comey's firing would not derail the bureau's mission. >> quite simply put, sir, you

cannot stop the men and women of fbi from doing the right thing, protecting the american people and upholding the constitution. >> reporter: mccabe says his firing is part of an unprecedented effort by the administration, driven by the president himself, to destroy his reputation and possibly strip him of his pension. overnight president trump called the firing, quote, a great day for the hard working men and women of the fbi and for democracy. and he took another shot at james comey calling him sanctimonious and said he made mccabe look like a choir boy. sheinelle, craig. >> thank you. to another developing story overnight, despite reports of more departures from the white house, the week ended without any top level staff changes inside the trump administration. this as the president's personal lawyers take aim at the porn star who is suing him. nbc's white house correspondent kelly o'donnell is following the overnight developments on this

one. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. high anxiety in the west wing as the president himself has stoked expectations that he wants even relishes more change on his staff. friday many senior officials including the chief of staff tried to tamp down worries about who would be the next to go. white house advisers waking up this morning as speculation about more staff shakeups reaches a fever pitch. >> there will always be change. >> reporter: much of that focused on national security adviser h.r. mcmaster who was smiling under the pressure friday. the press secretary tried to tamp down the uncertainty. >> the staff actually spoke to a number of staff this morning, reassuring them that there were personnel changes, no immediate personnel changes at this time, and that people shouldn't be concerned. >> reporter: a very different storm has been brewing on another front. two new legal strategies from president trump's personal lawyers against stormy daniels.

a $20 million counterpunch against the porn star suing the president. friday trump organization lawyer michael cohen sought damages claiming daniels repeatedly violated the nondisclosure agreement which carries financial penalties, and the president's lawyers requested the case move to federal court. daniels' lawyer blasted that as more of the same bullying tactics from the president and mr. cohen. intended, he says, to move their battle to private arbitration behind closed doors. the president's attorneys did not respond to request for comment. in 2016 daniels was paid $130,000 by cohen to keep quiet. she claims she had an affair with trump a decade ago that the president denies. on "morning joe" daniels' lawyer claimed the president was behind the hush money. >> do you have any doubt in your mind that president trump himself directed that payment to your client? >> none.

>> and he ratcheted up the accusations. >> was she threatened in any way? >> yes. >> was she threatened physical harm? >> yes. >> reporter: but the white house kept its distance. >> obviously we take the safety and security of any person seriously. certainly would condemn anyone threatening any individual, but i have no knowledge of that situation. >> reporter: and part of what makes this different is president trump has added his name to this litigation. he is not just standing behind his lawyer. this is a real change because he is part of the case now seeking damages against stormy daniels, and by claiming that she has treat footedly, more than 20 times, violated that agreement, it makes the damages sought more than $20 million and that helps move the case at least in the argument to federal court. >> kelly o'donnell, thank you. also this morning as searchers dig through the rubble of that collapsed bridge in miami a startling new

development. florida officials revealing an engineer called the department of transportation there to say something was wrong with the bridge days before the collapse. nbc's maya rodriguez is on the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. one of the bridge engineers left a voicemail for a state employee warning about cracks in the bridge just days before it collapsed. meanwhile, investigators here say the death toll will almost certainly rise. this morning possible warning signs missed. late friday the florida department of transportation releasing a voicemail from one of the bridge engineers just days before the collapse. >> i was calling to share with you some information about the fiu pedestrian bridge and some cracking that's been observed on the north end of the span. we've taken a look at it and obviously some repairs or whatever will have to be done, but from a safety perspective we don't see that there's any issue there. >> reporter: the florida

department of transportation says the employee who got the voicemail had been out of town and didn't hear the message until friday, the day after the collapse. the engineering firm, figg, said in a statement that they are committed to working with authorities and, quote, the evaluation was based on the best available information at that time and indicated that there were no safety issues. the ntsb said it had not received information about the voicemail. that agency confirming that crews were working to strengthen a part of the bridge at the time of the collapse. >> i would have to say that a crack in a bridge does not necessarily mean that it's unsafe. i know the crews were out there inspecting it and they were applying tension to strengthen a member. >> reporter: mean while, families of those still missing desperate for word on their loved ones, including carol fraga looking for her relative. >> his name is not there. you call the red cross and his name -- his name is not there. >> reporter: among those killed,

18-year-old alexa duran, a student at florida international university. she had been driving her best friend home from a doctor's appointment, 19-year-old richard humble. >> i was screaming her name so loud because i just wanted her to hear it and she just wouldn't respond. >> reporter: meanwhile, special equipment has been brought in to remove some of the large sections of the bridge that collapsed. investigators say the recovery work here could go on for days. sheinelle? >> so sad. thank you. let's get back to that incredible upset in the ncaa tournament that we told you about at the top of the show. a 16 seed taking down a number one seed for the first time in men's tournament history. nbc's morgan radford is with us with some highlights. good to see you. >> talk about those highlights, craig. that was an upset for the ages. this little known university of maryland baltimore county, a 16 seed, was given just a 1.5% chance of beating university of

all right. let's go to dylan now, she has a check of the weather. >> and, good morning, guys. we are going to see a mix of wintry weather. right now we have snow falling through ohio, a wintry mix through southwestern ohio. we also have the next storm system moving through the rockies. it is going to out ahead of it be a little bit stormy. we could see stronger storms down through waco, isolated large hail, isolated tornadoes, too. same thing on sunday, although it expands a bit and includes parts of kansas, oklahoma and also ex bends down along the gulf coast states. this storm system is going to move through the rockies, ahead of it we will see the rainy weather and stormy weather through texas and down through parts of the south. this is the storm system we are going to keep an eye on as we go into monday, producing heavier rain down along the southeast. what happens as it develops into a coastal system. models right now are kind of indicating that it should move mostly out to sea, but that is something we do need .

leave after the toddler threw a fit as they were boarding. passengers tried to come to the girl's defense when she stopped crying. social media lit up with outrage. much of it blaming southwest. the airline saying a c conversation escalated on board with the customer and the child and regretted the inconvenience. and going green. on this st. patrick's day, we are looking back at the favorite sites. celebrating the luck of the iri irish. today, march 17th, 2018. >> also this morning, a terrifying day on the slopes after a ski lift malfunction started going backwards throwing passengers everywhere. onlookers tried to get people to jump to the ground before it was too late. we have nbc's tammy leitner joining us with more. >> reporter: screams of panic captured in the moments as skiers are thrown from the malfunctioning ski lift in the country of georgia.

skiers say the lift stopped and began running in reverse at high speed. people on the mountain warning skiers to get off the lift. some jumping from different heights to avoid being crushed. others were unable to escape the out of control lift and thrown wildly as the chairs whipped around. ten people were injured. no one was killed. accidents like this are rare, they do occasionally happen. earlier this year, terrified skiers trapped in a chair lift during a snow storm in austria. winds caused the lifts to swing from side to side violently. in utah back in 2016, a boy slid off the ski lift. his backpack catching on the chair. the panicked boy dangling until ski patrol freed him. and the year before that, a chair lift malfunctioned at
