but you know where else we're seeing a lot of green? the radar. we're seeing scattered showers moving through right now. you can see stormranger, our doppler radar on top of san bruno mountain. if i zoom in, you can see very light pockets of rain kind of making their way through fremont right now. we saw light rain through san jose. now it's looking rather dry. right now we've got some showers moving in through los gatos. we can expect to keep this chance of rain, at least through the afternoon. the temperatures right now in the 30s and 40s. so it is definitely on the chilly side out there. san jose at 45 degrees. san francisco, 46. and if i take you through your temperature trend really quickly through san jose, you can see in the icons we're still tracking the chance of seeing more showers into the afternoon. i'll take you through the time line. that way you know how this might affect your st. patrick's day celebrations, if it's going to last all day.

i'll have all the details in about 15 minutes. >> yeah, how it might affect the parades. all right. we'll check back in with you. thanks. we begin with a deadly fire early this morning in san francisco. it happened at dawn's on sixth street between mission and mina. the adult video and bookstore just after 2:00 this morning. when fire crews responded they found one person dead inside the shop. fire officials save sixth street will be shut down between mission and folsom while they investigate. we're learning about a stanford law school graduate killed in the line of duty in iraq. christopher made it his life's mission to go into danger and protect others. in addition to being a lawyer, he was a new york firefighter and joined the international guard, where he was a helicopter pilot. trip and his unit were on a rescue mission in iraq near the syrian border when their chopper went down. all seven american troops killed aboard the helicopter. officials say the crash does not

appear to be the result of enemy activity. fellow stanford law grad, ben hoss, says he left a lasting impression on all he met. >> infectious personality. very nice, gregarious, always willing to help. i never would have anticipated then he would soon be counted among the ranks of the stanford law graduates who lost their lives in a war. >> the 37-year-old graduated from stanford law just last year. the school sent out a statement saying christopher was a beloved student, friend and community member, and he will be deeply missed. developing news out of washington where another person has been kicked out of the trump white house. fbi director director andrew mccabe was fired last night, a little more than 24 hours before he was set to retire. attorney general jeff sessions fired mccabe after an internal review citing the career fbi man had lacked candor under oath. mccabe calls his firing part of the trump administration's war on the fbi.

saying in part, it's a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the fbi. president trump shared his thoughts on twitter, calling mccabe's firing a great day for the hard-working men and women of the fbi. if weather permits, the search will continue this morning for an east bay man who vanished after a day of skiing south of lake tahoe. thomas mularkey went skiing wednesday at bear valley mountain resort in alpine county. his wife reported him missing when he didn't return to their cabin that night. avalanche conditions prevented the search and air operations were grounded because of the snow. mularkey's family is hopeful his experience in the outdoors will help him survive being lost. >> he knows how to dig a snow cave, which is a very good thing to know about in the wintertime. so we just don't know what's happened. >> he is a wonderful father, one of the best persons i've ever

known. >> they continue to hold out hope he'll be found. he spends part of his time in arnold. he has a wife and three children. the man acquitted of kate steinle's murder is now suing the federal government. jose garcia zerate's lawyer says additional charges are, quote, vindictive. zarate was acquitted in state court but convicted of carrying a firearm and violating immigration laws. his attorneys claim an attempt at federal prosecution is just another way of punishing zarate for steinle's death. now to new heartstopping video showing the moment that a pedestrian bridge went crashing down in miami. this dash cam footage surfaced late last night. you can see the collapse and the chaos that followed. also, a stunning revelation just two days before the collapse. a red flag. the lead engineer with the bridge design company reported cracking in the bridge near florida international university. that engineer left a voicemail

for an employee of the florida department of transportation. but that employee didn't receive the voicemail until yesterday. >> i was calling to, uh, share with you some information about the fiu pedestrian bridge and some cracking that's been observed on the north end of the span, the pylon end of that span we moved this weekend. so we've taken a look at it, and obviously some repairs or whatever will have to be done. but from a safety perspective, we don't see that there is any issue there. >> friday crews started the slow and painstaking process of removing debris. 950 tons of concrete fell on to a number of cars when the bridge fell on thursday. at least six people were killed. a sophomore passenger in a car survived after nearly being buried alive. >> i was scared beyond my life. i didn't think i was going to make it out of the car. i thought when i saw the bridge coming down that i was dead too. >> sadly, his best friend, alexa

welcome back. it's 7:09 on your saturday morning. cloudy skies over the golden gate bridge. some slick road conditions out there. we're expecting scattered showers throughout the day and vianey arana will be along in a bit to let you know how that rain and chillier temperatures could affect your st. patrick's day today. was a los gatos student punished for doing what thousands of students did wednesday? her parents say a teacher lowered their daughter's grade for taking part in the national school walkout, even though the school's administrators had given the green light.

>> reporter: when the principal and superintendent of a los gatos school district told parents, students and teachers that nobody would be punished for taking part in wednesday's national school walkout -- >> we tried to take a very balanced approach -- >> reporter: this parent encouraged his daughter's choice to do it. >> i gave her the green light and so did her mother that it would be okay. >> reporter: but the parent says, turns out things are not okay. he has asked we do not identify him and only call him by the name richard. according to richard, his daughter's science teacher gave the kids a pop quiz at the time of the walkout on wednesday, just to keep the students from doing it. because he opposed the national walkout. >> never pull a pop quiz and penalize the kids that wanted to exercise their first amendment rights. >> reporter: richard's daughter told her parents, she did, in fact, finish as much of the quiz as she could before the walkout started. >> the teacher did not accept it and did not give her any credit for any of the answers that she had. >> reporter: the school will not comment on the allegations.

vianey arana will be along in just a bit with scattered showers expected for today and chilly temperatures. shared bikes are becoming more and more common across the bay area, but one bike share company has experienced vandalism that's raising safety concerns. someone is cutting the brakes on several bikes. ford go bike has more than 70 bike stations throughout the city of oakland. one rider says she got on the bike in the morning to ride to work. when she went to an intersection, she saw a car coming and realized something was wrong. >> grabbed the brake, and there's no brake. on either side. and i swerved out of the way to try to, you know, save myself, and then when i got off the bike, i noticed, oh, my gosh, the brakes had been cut. >> that was an isolated incident, thank god. >> the company says they changed out those bikes and do check them daily. no further incidents have been reported. there's also a button at each

station to indicate if there's an issue with a bike. now to a scare for some cats also in oakland. they are all accounted for now but someone smashed the windows at cat town, an adoption center. this happened early yesterday morning. the noise scared the cats. they scattered. one cat was missing all day. however, late last night we received word, and the shelter announced that someone had found that missing cat. the adoption center is closed, though, until the two windows are fixed. one last try at a later last call. a san francisco lawmaker is making a final push to extend bar and nightclub hours. state senator scott weiner says instead of pushing for the entire state to extend hours, he's focusing on san francisco, oakland, los angeles, and sacramento. the goal is to have bars and night clubs close at 4:00 a.m. instead of 2:00 a.m., and this is all apparently to boost tax

revenue. the legislation failed to clear the state assembly last year. well, it is one of the most clogged freeways in the bay area, and it's only getting worse. if you live in the south bay, surely you know what i'm talking about, and you probably dread driving on 87. we're now wondering if technology can help ease the commute. "today in the bay's" scott budman shows us some ideas that are on the table. >> reporter: it's a south bay commuter's daily nightmare. highway 87, which runs north and south between highways 101 and 85. you've been there -- >> during the rush hour, yeah. >> reporter: the pathway to tech companies and a growing number of homes. >> traffic seems to be growing every day. doesn't matter what time of the day. >> sometimes i'm like, why are there so many people on the road, you know? so it's kind of like it's crazy. >> reporter: vta knows how 87 rolls. >> morning commuters, even commuters. >> reporter: and it wants to find solutions. so it's asking people in an online forum for ideas to

improve the 87 commute. steering away from new construction, it would rather hear high-tech ideas. >> we're exploring everything from part time shoulder use, potentially improving the metering lights. maybe making a more real-time information available to people available via app. >> reporter: so to improve your commute, create an app. or get a bike. >> i ride my bike and take the light rail every day. >> reporter: scott budman, nbc bay area news. >> and i saw some rain on my drive to san jose this morning. let's check in now at 7:17 with vianey arana with a look at our weekend forecast. and might i say, birthday girl, vianey arana. your birthday was two days ago, and you don't look a day older. >> thank you! >> don't you just hate people who don't age? >> so we did -- we did -- now i'm shy. we did see some activity on the radar this morning and we've still got a couple showers moving through. right now san francisco not

looking too bad out there and i know a lot of people have plans to be outside. so let's look at mobile doppler radar right now. we've got our stormranger scanning and you can see it's picking up a couple showers. so let's move in and zoom in and see exactly where those showers are pushing through. for the most part, as you can see, we're fairly dry. fremont not seeing showers. a couple light showers into palo alto, the sunnyvail area. woodside. and it looks like the majority of the rain is concentrated further south so along monterey, castroville and also through the gilroy area can expect to see a couple of those pockets of light to moderate showers. now, even though the stormranger right now isn't picking up too much activity, we're still on tap to see a couple more showers throughout the day. right now, though, the temperatures are on the chilly side. 30s and 40s. look at napa. 39 degrees. oakland, 45. san jose, also in the 40s at about 45 degrees. and your daytime highs, they're going to be on the cooler side. we're going to be topping out in

the 50s for today. check out san jose. 56 degrees. cupertino, 53. the east bay, you can see also in the 50s. 53 for pleasanton, 55 for oakland. along the peninsula, expect to see a little bit of a light breeze, daly city, 53 degrees. san francisco, 52 for the embarcadero. 53 for mission. and near the north bay, also expecting to top out in the 50s. as far as winds, not too windy, but if i take you through this hour by hour outlook, i want to show you the chances of scattered showers that we'll have through the afternoon. and actually, one of our producers on the team texted me, asking if he was going to get rained on for the st. paddy's day parade. let's go through the time line. 12:00, we'll see a couple popup showers. if i fast forward that time line, you can see between 12:00 and 5:00, it looks like we'll still see some light showers popping up here and there. kind of moving their way through from offshore further inland.

liver m livermore, san jose, a pop of showers. and as we head through the evening and the showers taper off, we'll expect to see a chance of possibly seeing isolated thunderstorms, because it is going to be a colder storm. and into tonight and early tomorrow morning, we are expecting to see some colder temperatures. now, this is just looking way ahead. long-range outlook. into tuesday. so we'll be seeing a dry sunday and a dry monday, but if you look ahead towards tuesday, the bigger picture is showing the arrival of another storm system, and that's going to keep us for the next several days on the rainy side from tuesday through friday. so if i take you through the next serve days, scattered showers continue as we head in towards sunday. it will be cloudy, but at least we'll get a break from the rain. that break from the rain will continue through monday. and then as we head into monday, late night, into tuesday, we'll see those showers move in. it's expected to be a little bit on the windier side as we head in towards wednesday and thursday. but overnight, expect to see some pretty cold temperatures.

experienced in war. many veterans are still haunted by the horrors they experience in war. but in the east bay, a relic from the war is helping vietnam veterans confront their past. "today in the bay's" joe rosatty jr. is showing us the healing it's bringing to two men. >> reporter: there are different kinds of bonds that come out of wars. bonds between military members, sometimes bonds with machines. in a quarter of a hangar at bud

field, evidence abodes. the polishing, primping, pain staying care is directed toward this vintage helicopter, which like many of its volunteer caretakers is a veteran of the vietnam war. >> we restored her. >> reporter: jeffrey car briefly served as crew chief of this very chopper in vietnam as a member of the assault helicopter company. his pilot was australian, andy perry. >> andy and i flew for about six months together. >> reporter: after the war, they lost touch until one day in 1996, car saw news footage of his friend in australia receiving a long overdue silver star. >> and i go, wait a minute. that's andy. >> reporter: in 2003, car and another veteran bought this huey helicopter and slowly brought it back to life. every bolt, every gun, exactly as they were in 1968. he invites perry to visit. >> it was with a great deal of fear and trepidation that i came

over here. in fact, i only did it because jeffrey insisted i come. >> reporter: like many vietnam veterans, perry returned home from the war only to battle post traumatic stress syndrome that forced him to give up flying. >> my life was spiralling down. jeff was the guy that brought me up and said you're going to have to come over here and you're going to have to have a fly. >> reporter: back in the cockpit, his hands on the controls of this machine of war is where perry finally found peace. >> the first time he got in the aircraft and we flew together, we didn't even have to say anything. it was just all those years had just gone away. >> it was like coming home. flying this thing again has been a huge part of my rehabilitation. >> reporter: car and his nonprofit group, huey vets, fly the chopper at parades and events. it's also become a vehicle for veterans like perry to exercise the past.

say it will look like this. >> yeah, for the most part. you know, we're still seeing some light, scattered showers. we've got a little bit of instability still out there in the air. so don't be surprised if we start to see a couple of those showers spark up later this afternoon. here's a look at woodside. one thing you haven't seen is the fog. it is chilly out there right now. especially in the north bay. santa rosa, 30 degrees. napa, 39. hayward about 45 degrees. and along half moon bay right now, we are still actively seeing a couple of showers and you can see those through our mobile doppler radar stormranger. you can see it's tracking a little bit of activity, at least along the peninsula. for the most part, though, further inland, you can see san jose dried out. we saw a couple showers move in overnight into early this morning, but woodside right now is seeing some showers. we will expect to see those same showers that you see right there, the cells pushing through. so we'll keep the scattered showers through the early afternoon. a lot of the moisture now is centered over monterey.

you can see heavier pockets there where you see the red and the yellow. that's where they're seeing lighter to moderate pockets of rain. now, another thing we will also note is for today is our daytime highs are going to remain fairly cool. we're only expecting to climb into the 50s. so once those initial showers move out, we will see the chance to develop some late thunderstorms and possibly hail into tonight. i'll talk more about that time line and exactly what you can expect when the rain will move out and what does this mean for your sunday. >> yeah. >> right? so details coming up. >> all right. we'll stay tuned for that, vianey, thanks. a deadly fire this morning in san francisco. it happened at 6th street in the city south of market district. the fire ignited at the adult video and bookstore just after 2:00 this morning. when fire crews responded, they found one person dead inside the shop. officials say sixth street will be shut down between mission and folsom for the next couple hours while they investigate. we are learning more about a stanford law school graduate

"today in the bay's" gene elliot explains why b.a.r.t. says the ads have to stay up.

>> reporter: b.a.r.t. riders are being bombarded with a new ad campaign some say is anti immigrant. the ad tells u.s. tech workers, companies think american workers are expensive and expendable and are being replaced with foreign workers who get h-1b visas. >> congress fix laws so companies must hire u.s. workers. >> reporter: kevin lind with progressives for immigration reform placed the ads. the southern poverty law center has previously called the group anti immigrant, but lind says that's not the message. >> no, they are not anti immigrant. i would say they're probably anti companies that use this program to dislocate american work arers and exploit foreign workers that are brought over here. >> reporter: on social media, some riders are offended. >> i think it's misleading. >> reporter: the bay area council and economic institute represents tech companies. sean randolph says h-1b workers

are actually job creators. >> they're creating american jobs, filling a need. and, in fact, as i said before, if they end up staying, a lot of those people found companies that hire more and more americans. >> reporter: tech workers we talk to say they support the visa program. but can see why some don't. >> there's a lot of jobs out there. to be honest. and in tech, there's a shortage. we have a hard time hiring. >> if someone is -- their position is taken away by someone they view is not rightfully theirs, i think they're entitled to their opinion. >> reporter: jean elliot, nbc bay area news. she's undocumented, she's an attorney, and she has made history in california. liz immigranted from mexico to los angeles at 14 years old with her parents and siblings. now she's become the first undocumented person appointed to a state post. the state senate appointed her to an advisory committee that helps increase college opportunities for low-income

students. it's a move she hopes will inspire people nationwide. >> i hope that with my story and the way that i live my life, i can at least, you know, show people what is possible to do here in california. and hopefully it serves as an example for the rest of the country. >> her appointment came one day after president trump's visit to california to see prototypes of his border wall. back here in the bay area, there's a fight to keep a bit of nature inside the city of san francisco. these are 40 trees that stand outside san francisco's transamerica pyramid. they have been there since the building opened in the 1970s. well, the building owner has requested the trees be removed for a remodel. but the city says the trees were just inspected and are perfectly healthy. >> the company that wants to take these out did say they would like to put more replacement trees in, not one for one replacement. and we said no, it's just a no

go on this. these trees are good trees, they should not come out of the ground. >> later this month, the city plans to hold a public hearing about whether the trees should stay or go. the final decision, though, will come from the director of public works. well, he's out of prison and taking sides. former football star turned convict, o.j. simpson, says he agrees with president donald trump on one issue and one issue alone. that colin kaepernick should not have taken a knee during the national anthem. in his first major interview in a decade, simpson says the former 49er disrespected the american flag. kaepernick, as you likely know, started kneeling in 2016 to protect racial oppression in the u.s. . bay area native and olympian is taking a break from skating. fremont's very own karen chen has withdrawn from the figure skating world championships. the competition starts next week in italy. this comes one month after chen skated at the winter olympics and came in 11th place. chen hasn't said why she is not

brackets all over the country have been busted by a march madness at its finest. brackets all over the country have been broken by a historic victory, number 16-seed university of maryland, baltimore county, upset number one-seed, virginia, in the first round of the ncaa tournament. it's the first time in tournament historian upset like this has happened. wow. the final score, 74-54. and from college hoops to the pros, a big loss for the warriors. before they even hit the court. the team is already without steph and clay. and now kd is now out, at least two weeks with a fractured rib. as for last night's game, some

[seen it. covered it. n. we know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two. ♪ we are farmers. bum-pa-dum, bum-bum-bum-bum ♪ good morning. it is 7:44. and on this saturday, we are still tracking some light showers. but i just want to show you this gorgeous shot of san francisco right now. we've still got a couple of dark clouds out there. and if you have plans to be outside, well, bundle up. the temperatures right now in the 30s and 40s as you wake up this morning. 46 for san francisco. along the peninsula also in the 40s and down through san jose at about 45 degrees. now, stormranger right now is up and scanning. our mobile doppler radar on top of san bruno mountain. you can see, it's picking up some light scattered showers. so you might encounter a couple wet roadways out there. if i zoom in, we can pinpoint exactly where we're seeing the rain. so right now palo alto, expect to see a couple showers in the next couple minutes or so.

it looks like for the most part the majority of those showers are staying along the coast near half moon bay, moving through woodside right now. and then further down south, near monterey and castroville, really seeing some heavier pockets of rain up there. we've got some light showers up in the santa cruz mountains. but we will start seeing some more of that rain developing within the next couple of hours. if i take you through your san jose temperature trend, look at this. by about 9:00 a.m., we'll see another line of showers making its way in. 48 degrees. and then we keep the chance of seeing that rain all through the afternoon. and by about 2:00, 3:00, later into the afternoon, we'll see a chance for possibly some developing isolated thunderstorms. so let's take you through that hour by hour outlook. by about 12:00, i know there's the st. patrick's day parade in san francisco. we are expecting to see the scattered showers pushing through the 11, 12:00 hour. so keep that in mind. take your umbrella or maybe just a raincoat. it's going to be periods of light to moderate, so not

necessarily heavy downpours. as we head in towards later portion of tonight, you can see by about 6:30, we'll keep the showers on the map from the north bay to the south bay. and then we get a bit of a break on sunday into monday. and then as we fast forward that time line through tuesday, you can see, we get another disturbance rolling in. and that's expected to bring a good amount of moisture and rain through tuesday into wednesday and all the way through friday. what it's looking like now. so let's take you through your day planner for st. patrick's day. we are expecting those 30s to linger until the early morning and then by about 10:00 a.m., we'll continue to see some scattered showers on the map. we'll warm up a little bit into the 40s by 1:00. we'll start seeing a chance for thunderstorms, possibly even some small hail in certain areas. and then by 4:00, the showers do start to diminish just a bit. should taper off by this evening, making way for mostly cloudy night, but at least we'll get a break from the rain as we head in towards sunday. the temperatures will remain in the 50s for san francisco. we'll keep the chance of seeing

francisco )s " there is a new multimillion dollar plan to clean up san francisco's diseased streets. it was just last month when our investigative unit exposed a dangerous mix of trash, feces and used needles scattered throughout downtown. a proposal puts more street cleaners on the ground, but some people want that idea scrapped. our investigative reporter tells us why. >> everyone cares about street cleanliness. >> reporter: jane kim admits strolling the streets of san francisco isn't what it used to be. >> it's just completely unacceptable that our children have to walk around needles and feces. >> reporter: why has the city allowed it to get this bad? >> every year we have increased our budget for street cleaning services and every year we are not meeting the demand as it increases. >> reporter: kim now wants to

use $2.5 million left over from last year's city budget to pay for a deeper clean. that would include two new street sweeping machines and about 20 more street cleaners. that's an 8% staff boost. >> we have a $10 billion budget and we absolutely can dedicate more dollars to street cleaning and street cleaning services. >> reporter: but two of kim's fellow supervisors voted to scrap her plan during a committee hearing last week. >> i do think that it's a little irresponsible to support a one-off spending proposal. >> reporter: supervisor malia cohen wants to wait for the city's normal budget process, which won't get approved for another four months. she says skipping that should only be for emergencies. >> this particular supplemental request does not quite reach that threshold. >> i think the conditions of our streets are a state of emergency. and this board every year has utilized this tool of spending unspent dollars towards priority or crisis happening in our city. >> reporter: lisa opens the cafe roma coffee shop, where she and

her customers spot trash and needles almost daily. sales are down about 15% compared to three years ago. >> i have so many customers that mail order our coffee because they don't want to come to san francisco any more. >> reporter: as part of our investigation, we hit the streets, surveying 153 blocks of downtown san francisco. spent three days walking up and down every street, inspecting more than 20 miles of the city. we found trash on every block. 303 piles of feces. and 100 needles. >> people are embarrassed. i mean, they're embarrassed, they're angry. they don't understand why such a rich city can't keep our streets clean. i'm embarrassed too. >> reporter: kim, who is running for mayor says she is still determined to give her clean streets idea a fresh start. it's one of the pillars of her campaign. but the politics are messy. in a rare move, she now plans to bypass the budget committee and force the full board to vote on her proposal next month.

and executive director al malika are here with magoo. he is really -- >> sweet. >> cute. he is a chihuahua terrier mix, is that right? >> right. he's about 10 weeks old. >> wow, okay. >> probably a little older. he is missing his bottom jaw. >> which isn't entirely apparent when you're looking at him. from my -- >> yeah. >> from my neophyte perspective. >> we think it's due to some -- his teeth -- diseased teeth. >> yeah. >> and he's from selma. we picked him up in the central valley. >> and what you do, you all are so wonderful. you rescued him. you rescue a lot of pets that are, you know, at risk of, you know, being put to sleep. and even though he had all these health problems, you still took him on. and you took care of all his health problems. and it's a part of a bigger program that you do, called the second chance fund, is that right? >> that's a fund that we use to

take care of dogs, cats that like magoo that have special needs. you know, we go in and will rescue, 20, 30 animals. it's inevitable that some of those will have serious medical problems. and we make a commitment once they become a residents of pets in need, we take care of their needs no matter how long it takes, no matter how much it costs. and so he had to have some surgery or dental work? >> he'll have to have some work done. he's got some problems with his back legs. >> so cute. >> a special needs guy. >> but he doesn't act like it, you know? >> no, you would never know. >> he's so super sweet, just sitting on the lap -- >> he's a lap dog. >> i would typically ask what kind of home would be good for him but he's actually not ready for adoption yet because he still has a little bit of work to be done. >> right. but a quiet home. he's -- he's near the end of his life so not looking for too much activity. >> yeah, he's a good companion. he seems to be my speed. sitting around. i have a baby to chase after. a nice, calm dog would be nice.
