night. his family is holding on to hope he'll be found safe. roz is in berkeley where she spoke with family members. >> >> reporter: i did just a few minutes ago talk to his niece. she was about to jump on a conference call with other relatives so we got speak with them as well. this is the first day the family says the weather has been good enough so they can search from the air. thomas malarkey has been missing since wednesday. almost immediately, search efforts hampered. the first night, there was avalanche danger and there has been heavy know since then. today they were told they were able the get a drone up for about 40 minutes. they also had about 40 searchers looking today. the family says because he is a skilled out doorsman, they are

here's what we know so far -- flames engulfed an adult back and video store. when fire crews got to the scene, they found one person dead inside the shop. it is normally open 24 hours a day. it's located on sixth and mission in the sonoma district. the name of the victim has not been released. an art thief caught. he walked into valley medical center and took a painting off the wall. the painting is worth $16,000 and it was hanging in the new building. the thief was caught on surveillance video, we are told. it has yet to be recovered. you're looking live at the bay bridge tonight. many people already in san francisco to celebrate st. patrick's day. chp says it will be out in full force catch drunk drivers. >> that person who decides to go

the high elevation areas as well. a cop of showers in santa clara. now moving towards san jose. if you're in san jose, get readily the rain is going hit you. let's talk about where the majority of the rain is now, just south of the trivalley. that system made its exit. we are going to see a couple of low to mid level clouds. some spots do have a chance of seeing slightly cold temperatures in the 30s, possibly near freezing. as far as tomorrow, we do have to opportunity of seeing patchy, dense fog early on and the temperatures will remain in the upper 50s, 56 for san francisco, palo alto at 59 degrees. you can see livermore and the morgan hill temperature. really topping out in the 50s. we have a come of things going on. if i take you through this hour

dry on the models because they're kind of, you know, not really working in the gradients of how much rain and when this will arrive. right now the long range system is showing it arriving tuesday. wednesday and thursday, we get an atmospheric river. that means heavy rain with combination of strong wind as we head in towards that system into wednesday. then we keep that rain really into thursday before we start to see that taper off, possibly lingering through friday morning with scatters showers. don't put away the umbrellas just yet. plenty of instability. sunday we warm up by ten degrees in some locations. 62 our daytime highs. 54 into tuesday. tuesday to wednesday, that cold

front sweeps i wan. that kicks up the winds. temperatures in the 60s. then the temperatures remain in the upper 60s as we head into monday. tuesday, wednesday, we get the cold front. keeps rain in the forecast on thursday. our wettest days of the week so far look to be tuesday into wednesday and thursday, before we start to see drier conditions as we head towards next week so, we have a busy seven days ahead. i know we get a little bit of a break tomorrow and monday, so thankfully we get to enjoy a nice sunday. and i don't think the rain messed up anybody's st. patrick's day plans. i had a couple people text me, do i need a raincoat for the parade? i said proceed at your own risk? there will be moments we see scattered showers but the rain backed off.

off. a potential edition of the nbc bay area news because of the giants game. the conditions didn't let up for the weekend. and the rain, on and off today, but we are almost in the clear i hear. >> this is what you call the calm following the storm. this is what it looks like woodside right now. san francisco depicting that beautifully. we have the sunset but a couple of drops working to dry out. we had some wacky weather. danville and areas in the trivalley early on. our mobile doppler radar is still scanning. the majority of the showers trekking inland, off to the south of the trivalley and it's going continue to make its exit leaving behind some cloud combinations as we head in

towards tonight. the temperatures will drop to the 40s, some 30s. heyward right now, 51 degrees. san jose, also 51 degrees. oakland, 52 degrees. tomorrow's daytime highs will be very similar. within the next couple of hours, san francisco is going clear out quite nicely in them offense that cloud cover. by 10:00 they'll be in the 40s. by 1, 2:00 a.m., the lows will be in the 40s. expect some chillier weather but we'll be warming up nicely tomorrow. what can you expect for sunday? and the next seven days? because i'm tracking another storm system that's expected to move its way in. that's going pack a pretty heavy bunch. all the details coming up in just a bit.

thank you so much. remember, you can track the forecast with our free nbc bay area app. traffic from alameda has been down for most of the day because of a sinkhole that formed. live in alameda tonight where drivers waited patiently to alive the island. >> reporter: i want to show you that backup here in alameda. check that out over there. that line backs up for several blocks into the town of alameda. but there are two other lanes, there are a few city street that is merj into the tunnel. i want to show you why all the lanes are backed up. multiple lanes being squeezed down to a single lane going oakland. a sinkhole formed at the exit going to oakland. it's been temporarily coffered with steel plates.

the sinkhole formed because of a malfunctioning drain. the backup has been like this for hours. >> how long do you think you're going to be in traffic? >> probably close 45 minutes. it's been backed up for two hours at least. >> it may take a week to repair the damage, so people hoping to leave alameda should plan to go around the backup. that includes using other exits off the island, which would include the park street bridge, high street, and bdoolittle drive. >> what a hispanic for drivers there. thank you. developing at this our, an intense search continues for a richmond man after a day of skiing in the sierras. the family of thomas malarkey holding on to hope he'll be found safe.

roz. >> reporter: i did indeed speak to family members here and we were able to talk to family members on a conference call who are part of the search effort. they say this has been a first break in the weather that allowed them to make a little bit of progress when it comes to searching from the air. thomas malarkey has been missing since wednesday. that's when the avid skier set out from the bear valley resort. tefrs have been hampered. there was an avalanche warning. the family tells us they were able to get a drone up for about 40 minutes today. they also had a large search team of about 40 members and still tonight because he is a skilled outdoorsman his family remains hopeful. >> if anybody has to be in this situation, it might as well be tom. he's got skills and experience.

administration's war with the fbi. for from pete williams. >> reporter: attorney general je jeff sessions accepted a recommendation from the fbi to fire andrew mccabe, on reports that he let investigators talk with a journalist during the collison investigation. the justice department says 19 other people were fired from the fbi over the past year for lack of candor. >> sir, i can't comment. >> reporter: but mccabe says he spoke truthfully. he says he's being singled out for supporting former fbi director james comey afc the te was feared. mccabe says his fires is part of an unprecedented effort by the

we have a lot of heavy, dark smoke billowing into the air. looks like there's significant traffic up theres the well. we'll continue to follow this. you're the won who first noted this on one of those cameras. >> yeah, i'm thinking where's the rain when you need it? so that timing unfortunately, no at the best. at leasts the not windy, though. that's the good news of it. wind and fire are not a good combination. but we'll expect to see a bit of a change in the weather. drier conditions as we head towards sunday. it will be one of those days where we see the dark clouds, but they won't be rainy. san francisco, this is a different picture. this is a look at the goth golden gate bridge. no clouds in sight. the majority of the rain.

we saw showers move in from the coast. not a lot of activity up there. still seeing a couple of little pocket offense showers near daley city, but not heavy moisture. if you stozoom out on the map, can see the majority of the rain moved inland and south. fresno is getting a lot of thunder and lightning. for the most part we are in the clear of the initial system. we did see hail early on, saw on and off rain earlier in the day. san francisco is at 52 degrees. san jose also in the 50s. within the next couple of hours you're going to notice not a lot of cloud cover. by 9:00 it's 48 degrees and into the late overnight hours it will remain in the 40s.

fortunately, no more rain. judging by that building fire, we can expect to see more smoke covering the sky. san jose, similar conditions as well. clear skies. for the most part, we'll drop down into the 40s, which means early on in the morning, we have a chance of seeing patchy dense fog into the early afternoon as well. daytime highs for tomorrow, oakland, expect a high of 57 degrees. san francisco, 56, santa rosa, 59. down in the south, the upper 50s. once we get in the drying/warping trend, we'll get -- squaw creek. the fresh powder in the last few days. right now at 24 degrees. here's a shot of kirkwood. also seeing the fresh powder.

this is at the resort. 24 degrees right now. definitely going to be a great day to head up there tomorrow. much better traveling conditions than friday. and sat you have a better chance of make, it up there without touch of a mess in terms of roads. for the last seven days we got owe good amount of snowfall in the last three days but total for the last 7 days, squaw valley at 95 inches. season total, 338 inches. heavenly in the last 7 days you saw 63 inches. north star, 74 inches. as you know, any snow is welcome snow. but we do have another system moving in and this disturbance looks like it has the possibly of being an atmospheric river. what that means is a good amount of rainfall and wind.

tuesday in towards wednesday, heavy rain. expect a combination of wind be rain, gusting 30, 40 plus miles per hour. . that storm system widespread thursdays thursday. for the next seven days here's a look at what you can expect. tomorrow, a lot drier. but still cloud cover out there. peeks of sunshine. 53 degrees. mono, an increase in temperatures by about ten degrees in some pots. we'll go from 50s to have 60s. tuesday to wednesday, we see a big change in the weather pattern with the arrival of the disturbance. right now, the models are conflicting in terms of how much rain, but we have the potential of seeing several inches of rain, close to 1 to 3 inches towards the bay area. wednesday, thursday, we'll have a better idea of how much rain
