in the bay." and now we want to toss to nbc news for a special report with savannah guthrie on that school shooting in maryland. we know that three people were sent to the hospital. of course, we will continue to monitor that as well. >> announcer: this is an nbc news special report. here's savannah guthrie. and good morning, we have breaking news at this hour. right now, a maryland high school on lockdown, after yet another school shooting. this is unfolding in great mills, maryland which is about 60 miles south of washington, d.c. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is monitoring these events. peter, good morning to you. what can you tell us? >> savannah, let me walk you through what we know. just moments ago we heard from the county sheriff who has new details telling our affiliate two students have been hit be

both of them said to be in critical condition. a school resource officer confrontnd and shot the gunman who we're told is as in critical condition. all of the victims at great mills high school in st. mary's county have been rushed to nearby hospitals. the sheriff's department says that the incident is now contain. the school official telling us there was only one shooter. that there is no other active shooter right now. maryland governor's you can imagine tweeting that he's closely monitoring the situation. as we speak, parents are being advised to stay away from this campus. authorities have set up a safe location for them to reute with their kids. obviously, it's terrible. the shooting coming four days before the national march for our lives. that's where students from across the country are expected to converge here in washington to demand stricter gun laws. the students at great mills were among those to participate in that school walkout last week to

in texas. the latest happened overnight inside a fedex facility outside of austin. that's a city, of course, already on edge, after a string of package bombs, nbc's gabe gutierrez is in austin this morning. ease got the latest, gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. as federal prosecutors are processing the scene, of the fourth explosion, that breaking news that you mentioned another explosion this time at a fedex distribution center near san antonio. fedex said one of its employees suffered minor injuries. a dispatch call suggests that that package contained nails and was bound for austin. this morning, authorities in texas or investigating yet another bomb explosion, this time a package bound for austin exploded shortly after midnight at a fedex distribution center in schertz, texas about an hour south of texas. >> there were nails and metal in the bomb.

package was going to austin and building is being evacuated at this time. >> reporter: the sheriff's police department posting on facebook that the explosion came from a package in the sorting area of the facility. the blast follows a series of package expolosions in the austn area that have left two people dead and four people injured. back in austin a trip wire twist has that city on edge. >> we are clearly dealing with what we expect to be a serial bomber at this point. >> reporter: 500 fbi and atf agents working a mystery ever the explosion this month. you can hear the blast on this surveillance video. it was recorded at his home nearby. how disconcerting is this to have this in your neighborhood? >> it's extremely disconcerting because we have children that walk those sidewalks three times

a day. >> reporter: the packages looked like deliveries left on door steps. these men were killed in separate incidents. but the latest bomb was different left by the side of the road, police say, and triggered with a trip wire. >> with this trip wire, it changes things, it's more sophisticated. it's not targeted to individuals. >> reporter: the 22-year-old was riding on his bike when he and another friend traveling on foot hit the wire. his grandfather telling them that nails were in his leg. >> obviously, everybody is anxious. concerned about this, everyone wants answers. >> reporter: authorities have raised the reward for any information leading to an arrest to $150,000. savannah in the past minutes more breaking news. local authorities are now responding to reports of a suspicious package at a fedex facility here in austin.

but at this point, it's unclear if it's related to any of the previous packages, savannah. >> gabe, i know you'll keep watching it, appreciate it. thank you. also breaking overnight, severe weather across the south, tornadoes and hail and rain slamming the region, causing outages. it will be the east coast's fourth nor'easter. we'll get to al in a minute but first nbc blake mckay is in jacksonville, indiana where one of the storms hit. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. you see the storms were powerful enough to uproot massive trees like this and send debris flying. there were two tornadoes reported here in jacksonville, alabama, alone now that the sun has come up, first responders are going street by street, house by house getting a lack at the damage.

this morning, wicked weather tore through the region overnight 'powerful storm system jumping hail the size of tennis balls across alabama. >> that is some hail right there. >> reporter: powerful tornadoes also tearing across the state. riffing roofs off homes and businesses. knocking down trees and power lines and leaving behind a long trail of destruction. >> the building behind me is completely gone. there's nobody there. it's wiped out. >> reporter: the national weather service confirming at least three tornadoes touching down in northern alabama. jacksonville state university was especially hard hit. the campus took a beating. the basketball arena and dorms suffering extensive damage. >> for my building, the whole roof is completely torn off. the whole like third floor is gone. it looks like it's about to cave in. >> reporter: it could have been much worse. most of the students are away.

on spring break. >> i'm just glad i'm here. >> reporter: we're a few blocks from that university. this is the sort of damage we're seeing. right now, we're only hearing reports of injuries here. no deaths. hoda and savannah. >> blake, thank you. and out west, the largest storm of the season is taking aim at down california and triggering mass evacuations, we want to get right to al on this. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, this is a live picture from montecito, california. notice how there's no vegetation. it's been stripped away first from the burn and the wildfires and the flooding they had three or four months ago. well, now, with more heavy rain coming there's a big concern that there could be more debris and mudslides. and that's why there are mandatory evacuations in and around santa barbara. here's the issue, we've got a

massive storm system out in the pacific. it is funneling in a ton of moisture from northern california, all the way down to southern california. we have flash flood watches in effect. here's what we're looking for during the day. rainfall amounts anywhere from 1 to 3 inches per hour. flash flood threat for those debris slides and all around those burn scars. and we're looking, the heaviest rain is expected to be late tonight, tomorrow on into thursday. and the rain will move into the great basin area. snowfall amounts up in the sierra, anywhere from two to three feet. and the vein going to be the big problem. we are going to be looking anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain, rainfall amounts, 1 to 2 inches. but in the foothills, where the burn scars are, five to ten inches of rain in the foothills in the mountains. here in the east, 74 million people under some sort of

weather winter advisory, if you know somebody heading this way, well, it's going to be a mess. the reason, heavy snow is going to be developing along with strong winds. snowfall amounts generally from washington, d.c., 4 to 6 inches of snow, baltimore, 6 inches, philadelphia, 8 to 12 urgeinche. all along the i-95 corridor, a mess. hartford, same in providence. however, the storm hasn't formed yesterday so we're going to have to adjust this in the next 24 hours. but, savannah, coast to coast, we have a real mess on our hands. >> happy first day of is spring. al, we'll check back in in a moment. also on a busy tuesday morning, the president is beefing up his legal team. the special counsel's investigation. a move that some see as confrontational to robert mueller. pete alexander is at the white house. >> reporter: the west wing might not be the only place undergoing

generated crime. >> reporter: but digenova's past comments about former president clinton are in the spotlight. with critics pointing to his legal argument in support of a presidential indictment. in 1997, digenova writing an op-ed in "the wall street journal." the nation could benefit from the indictment of a president. it would teach the valuable civics lesson that no one is above the law. the addition comes as president trump has dramaticallies indicated his assault on mueller's probe, criticizing it as a witch hunt. the twitter attacks leading to mounting speculation he could fire mueller. the president's lawyers say that's not under consideration. it's a step republican allies are warning against. >> why are you confident he won't do this? >> because, i think it would be the stupidest thing anybody could do. >> reporter: also this morning, nbc news has learned the president's legal team recently sat down with the special counsel's team to discuss and negotiate the terms of an interview between mueller and the president. it wasn't the first time the two sides met face-to-face. a source familiar with the meeting telling nbc news, they

remember the 19-year-old. >> super happy, super happy. he's a star. >> reporter: the freshman player was found dead in bermuda after mysteriously vanishing after a night out to the local bar with his teammates. >> police can't confirm that he was seen alone, walking east. he appeared to be using a cell device at the time. >> reporter: he traveled to the destination with his team for a spring break rugby tournament. a source in bermuda telling nbc news his own brothers discovered his body in a mote at fort prospect, an old military camp near police headquarters. the source saying he was beaten and strangled. although, police have not officially revealed a cause of death yet. >> foul play is not ruled out right now. the forensic offices are there assessing the scene. >> reporter: a heart breaking discovery for the family who flew to bermuda after learning the disappearance to join in the search effort.

coming in and, today through thursday, we got flash flood threat, debris slides with the burns from a year ago, and we're also looking at anywhere from 2-3 feet of snow making its way through the sierra. the problem, though, the rain. heavy rain, generally 3-5 inches. rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour, but in the foothills of southern california, we could see 5-10 inches of rain, and i'm meteorologist kari hall with the heaviest rain across southern california, for the bay area no watches, warnings or advisories in effect, but we are still going to have some rounds of rain and it has gotten a little heavier within the past couple of minutes as i've been tracking the rain across the north bay just north of novato rainfall rates at about a tenth of an inch of rain per hour, rain also filling in for the east bay as well as the south bay. this is goings to make things very tricky as we go through the day and expect the winds to pick up by this afternoon.

hour south of austin near san antonio. one of the employees was injured and released. but initial dispatch call said that package had nails inside it and was bound for austin. this morning, authorities in texas are investigating yet another bomb explosion. this time, a package bound for austin exploded shortly after midnight, after a fedex distribution center in schertz, texas, south of austin. >> there's nails and metal in the bomb. the package was going to austin and building is being evacuated at this time. 75 employees were in the building. >> reporter: the schertz police department posting on facebook that the explosion came from a package in the sorting area of the facility. the blast follows a series of package explosions in the austin area that have left two people dead and four injured. the associated press reporting federal agents say the package is likely linked to the other attacks by what they believe is a serial bomber. back in austin, a trip wire twist has that city on-edge. >> we're clearly dealing with what we expect to be a serial

here's a great question. have you filed your taxes yet? this year, the deadline is april 17th. that's four weeks away. jean, you're giving me the feeling that i should be panicking already. we're a month away. don't we have breathing room? >> not really. there's a couple of things going on. the first is, we have a lot of scams in the marketplace. we'll just talk through this. i don't know if this is going to go. >> i'll tap it. >> there we go. >> all right. what's happening is that fraudsters are picking up the phone and calling you and saying, you must pay this money right now. and you have to do it on a debit card or in a particular way. and they're threatening they're going to take away driver's licenses or do other things that are going to cause them t panic. >> okay. >> the irs is not going to call you in this way. they may call you. but they're not going to demand

payment. >> what if you look in your bank account and you have extra money and they say, you shouldn't have gotten that refund. >> you should call the irs and say, i did not pay my taxes yet. this is another form of that scam. don't panic. >> here's something important. you are supposed to check your withholding. right now. >> we had a big change in the tax law. and the tax brackets were reduced. as a result, 90% of people are seeing more money in their paychecks. that's a good thing but not all 90% are going to be able to keep that money. >> oh. >> that's a problem. you need to go to the irs' website, run through there withholding calculator and make sure that you are getting the correct amount in your paycheck, not too much and not too little. if you don't do this, you could have a problem next year. >> that's for the next season. >> for 2018 but you have to do it now because the more

paychecks you get, the bigger this problem can get. >> you might have to change some things. >> you might have to fill out a new w4. give it to your employer and say, withhold a little less or withhold a little more. >> a lot of people when it comes to doing taxes, they can't do it themselves. they use one of the turbo taxes or whatever it is to help. >> tax software or a person to help. many pay for tax software. if you make less than $64,000 a year, there's a very good chance that you could do this for free using tax software. you go to the irs' website, irs.gov. look for the free file tool. they will hook you up with tax providers that will do it for free. if you want to work with a person, you can get that for free through the aarp tax foundation. they have 5,000 locations around the country. >> let's talk refunds, the good
