golden gate bridge your time now is 7:00 and we want to start you off this sunday morning, march 25th, 2018, with a live look outside. that is the golden gate bridge. some stormy clouds there off in the distance, but we're going to get a break from the rain and i am he can sight bd t good morning, thank you for joining us, i'm vicky nguyen. vianey arana is here with a look at that microclimate forecast. you are saying we're experiencing some showers today. any clearing, any chance for us to get outside? >> you know, earlier the models were showing it leaving early afternoon, now it looks like we might see a couple showers into the evening but it's not going to be a complete washouts. there may be moments of peeks of sunshine here and there. right now the temperatures in the 30s and who is, santa rosa 39 degrees, san francisco 46, hayward 42, san jose 40 degrees. i want to show you what our

storm ranger is picking up. that's our mobile doppler radar. it's actually up and scanning in our parking lot, that's the red scan that you see there. the white scan is the national weather service radar. and if i zoom this in i can really pinpoint the exact locations where we're seeing light showers moving through. right now mill valley seeing some showers, also through he will campo seeing some showers. if i zoom out towards half-moon bay you see we have approaching showers toward redwood city. redwood city can expect to see rain within the next maybe 10, maybe less minutes or so. as we head in towards the palo alto area, also seeing some showers, but i will talk about the warming and drying trend that's on the way, maybe even some 80s. >> wow, that sounds really good. vianey, thank you so much. a show of force from demonstrators in the shadow of the nation's capitol yesterday. a crowd of 800,000 or more most of them teenagers demanding changes to gun laws in america. the march for our lives rally was led by students from parkland, florida, where a

gunman killed 17 people during a valentine's day school shooting. some 800 events were held in the united states and around the world, including several right here in the bay area. young speakers took to the stage in san francisco as tens of thousands of demonstrators turned out for a rally at the civic center before their march through the city. the crowd headed down market street, you can see them there carrying signs, many telling us this won't be the end and that they feel empowered by social media. >> now we can interact directly with lawmakers and with other powerful people and we can show that we have strength in numbers. >> when the government isn't doing their job we step in to do their job for them which is to tell them that this needs to change. >> this question that has to be asked is how many must die before the united states does something about this. >> senator dianne feinstein attended the event pushing her own legislation aimed at banning assault rifles. the former san francisco mayor says she hopes this movement continues to grow.

and this is what the march for our lives rally looked like in oakland yesterday morning. our nbc bay area chopper flew over franco gallo plaza at city hall. another peaceful protest as 2,000 demonstrators gathered to hearing from organizers and guest speakers. >> we are not giving up until we get what we want. we are tired of hearing from our elected officials and the people in power that right now is not the time to have a conversation about gun reform. we are going to make that change whether they want to or not. >> oakland police facilitated the march from city hall to lake merritt. no major incidents. in the south bay thousands marched in san jose calling for an end to gun violence. many were students marching alongside their parents. the protesters marched through downtown san jose. speakers included a graduate from marjory stoneman douglas high school in florida. support for this weekend's marches on twitter as well. former president barack obama applaudedity kids behind the

new details about the first homicide investigation this year in newark. it happened around 11:00 friday night on wells avenue near ash street. officers say a man was gunned down outside a duplex just a short distance from a park and playground. neighbors spoke with us and said they are disturbed by this violence in their neighborhood. >> we don't normally have problems, you know, i leave stuff outside all the time, too, we don't have problems with people taking stuff, our neighborhood is kind of good for where we're at. so, yeah, i don't know. i hope this doesn't change anything. >> police have yet to identify the victim of that shooting. anyone with information is being asked to call the newark police department. people living in a south bay neighborhood took it upon themselves to stop an alleged hit and run driver overnight. it happened on manker avenue in san jose about 2:00 this morning, that's near san jose city college and buena vista park. neighbors say the driver hit several parked cars before coming to a stop and that's when

they jumped into action. >> the whole neighborhood was out here trying to stop him. they were crowded around his car, we opened his door and took his seat belt out and pulled him out. we were trying to have him lay there until the authorities came. >> the driver was taken to a nearby hospital. his injuries are unknown. it is also not yet known whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in all those hit and runs. a san jose community is rallying to support a nonprofit farming organization after thieves stole valuable equipment saturday morning. farming group veggielution shared these photos. the group said someone stole its food trunk generate err and two generators from a kitchen classroom. the organization works on king and story eds roads. veggielution says they need $10,000 to replace the machines. donors have raised 4,000 to help. two rv trailers up in flames. you can see the smoke billowing into the sky after two carnival trailers caught fire yesterday

at the southland mall in hayward. no one was hurt. crews were able to quickly put out the flames before they spread. the mall is hosting a carnival in its parking lot, that's why the trailers are there, no word on what caused the fire. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a man is recovering after being rescued from a well in the east bay. how our water situation may be the reason the story had a happy ending. plus, the package delivered to this home not going to its rightful owner. what we know about the thieves caught in the act on camera. dow

communications hill time now is 7:09. that's a live look outside at downtown san jose from communications hill. a bird's-eye view of how things look in the south bay. a lifesaving rescue by firefighters in the east bay after a man got trapped in a well. sky ranger was over the scene in fremont. the elderly man fell 26 feet into a pool of water. had the water not been there had

we still been in a drought that man might have fallen 100 feet to his death. ross plater was on scene in fremont as firefighters rushed to the rescue. >> reporter: from the start fremont firefighters say it was a delicate operation, the elderly victim was treading water, cold and 26 feet down an old well. robert coulter, a maybe and friend said the man is 92 years old. >> i was worried like the devil. my best friend, you know, and there's nothing i can do, you know. >> coulter says the man and his daughter had been gardening, they used the old well to water their plants. they finished around 10:30, she headed towards the house, he went to the well to check the water levels. >> he didn't come in the house so she went looking for him and there he was in the bottom of the well. just colder than an ice cube. >> reporter: turns out the floor of that 100-year-old pump house gave way. >> we found him up to his neck in water.

he was clinging to the sides of the well because there was no -- we could not find the bottom. >> reporter: firefighters used a ladder truck rig to lower a rescuers into the well with a harness and carrying a helmet and life jacket for the victim. then they hoisted him up and out. once out, he was taken to the hospital to be checked out. >> he's got numerous lacerations to his head and arms. he's very lucky given the extent of the fall and with hypothermia and due to his age. >> reporter: in fremont i'm roz planer, nbc bay area news. >> glad he is okay and out of the hospital. still to come on "today in the bay," tesla pumping the brakes on its deliveries, why the slow do you mean and where customers will be affected. and we have a couple showers moving through, you can see the clouds, partly clear over san francisco, but we are expecting a big change on the way. i'm talking about a warming and drying trend headed towards the bay area. details coming up.

as protest here is a live look outside, that's the san mateo bridge. that is the longest bridge in the bay area, traffic moving nicely, though you can see it is still wet on the roadways and we have a few more showers headed our way before a nice break this week. protesters rallied against gun violence across the bay area and the world santa cruz deputies hosted a gun buy back. the line of gun owners stretched around the parking lot as they waited their turn to turn in their guns for cash. within two hours deputies collected hundreds of firearms including ar-style weapons. deputies had $20,000 to give out to gun owners and it was all cashed out by noon. several gun owners said safety was the main reason for getting rid of their firearms. >> i've been nagging at him to get rid of them. we have a two-year-old granddaughter who runs around our house now and even though the guns were locked away in a locked case way up high in the rafters of our garage, we are in our 70s and we felt it was time

that we clear them out. >> the guns will be screened to see if any of them were stolen, if they were they could be returned to the original owner. if not, they will be destroyed. a thief caught on camera in belmont, you can see him pull up in front of a home on friday, he approached the front door wearing a hoodie, he stole this package off the front porch. he got into a pickup truck where a get away driver was waiting. belmont police are hoping they can get that package to the rightful owner. elon musk is calling for a slow down of electric car deliveries in norway after reports the company is having trouble delivering its cars safely. business and tech website elec tech reported police have stopped recent shipments because the trucks transporting the cars are not following the rules of the road. norway is tesla's busiest market per capita. media reports say more and a dozen delivery trucks have been stopped by authorities for safety reasons. one truck recently crashed, destroying two model s cars.

musk announced the slow down in a tweet writing in part customer happiness and safety matter more than a few extra cars this quarter. a dark night around the globe last night for earth hour. take a look at the coliseum in rome as it went dark for the worldwide event. in paris lights out at the eiffel tower. really dramatic there. the world wildlife fund organizes this event each year to encourage people around the globe to lower their energy use. back here in the bay area the golden gate bridge was dimmed around 8:30 in honor of the event. we're going to get a check with vianey arana on the weekend forecast. yesterday there was a break in the sun and in our neighborhood everybody was out. we took the girls out on scooters and ran into every single neighbor. >> we're stir-crazy and everybody needs to get out of the house. >> it's going to be similar to yesterday where we had those periods of light rain and then we would get periods of breaks of sunshine. not going to be a complete washout, but the radar is still picking up moisture out there.

so we have to keep that in mind, especially if you had outdoor activities planned. here is a live look over san francisco, you can see for the most part the skies look like they've cleared out quite nicely. i do want to show you not just this live pic but also our storm ranger is scanning in the parking lot picking up some showers moving through. right now the temperatures in the 30s and 40s, 46 degrees for san francisco, 42 degrees for hayward, mountain view 39 and the santa cruz mountains in the 30s. storm ranger right now is still picking up a couple of these showers, a lot of them mainly moving through the peninsula right now, so if i zoom in we can see we've got smaller cells kind of pushing through muir beach right now, making their way in and then it's kind of getting a little muggier as we head towards half-moon bay. we saw those showers earlier, now they're near san mateo, redwood city seeing some of those showers. definitely expect to keep showers moving through. palo alto can expect to see some showers within the next ten

minutes or so. right now we're seeing some cells moving through west menlo park. as we head in towards the afternoon your daytime highs will be rather comfortable, they will be slightly warmer, but still in the 50s for daytime highs. san francisco 57 degrees, oakland a high of 58, san jose might even inch near that 60 degree mark. i want to say this is definitely going to be one of those days where even though there's light showers passing through the temperatures will be comfortable. so i do think a lot of people will have a chance to go outside. if you look at the outlook coast, bay and inland i will keep the showers in there because models are trending towards the showers moving out a little later than anticipated. if i take you through this hour by hour forecast you can see we still have falling snow for the sierra right now, south lake tahoe, kirkwood seeing some snow. by 11:00 a couple more showers passing through san francisco, palo alto, morgan hill, the fremont area and then we keep lingering spotty showers until 6:00 and then it clears out quite beautifully as we head in towards monday at 7:00 a.m.

that's going to make way for a very nice warming and drying trend in the bay area. so first of all as soon as those showers end for tonight the snow levels will be near 4,000 feet, we will get cooler temperatures and then right behind that we get this ridge of high pressure and that's going to bring a period of breezy times, drier and warmer temps that's going to warm all of us up into the upper 70s. let's talk about the next seven days. we will be at about 59 degrees through tomorrow and then as we head in towards tuesday here comes that nice warm up. look at san francisco, by wednesday we will be in the 70s at about 73 degrees, san francisco will maintain those temperatures with the dry conditions through the weekend and same for inland spots, but if you look ahead towards wednesday and into thursday, inland spots, some interior valleys more than likely going to be seeing some 80s on the map. so definitely anticipating a drier, warmer workweek ahead. that looks like it's going to continue in towards the weekend.

premature babies on whom regular clothing isn't a good fit for more than one reason. >> because the babies have a lot of wires on them, so this is like more free for them. and it's easier for the nurses to take care of them. >> reporter: jasmine says she wanted to do something like this for a long time but figured waiting until her gold award project for girl scouts would be perfect timing. she used money she had gotten from birthdays and christmases to pay for the supplies and has spent hundreds of hours working on the dresses since. >> oh, look at you with your little bags. that is so cute. >> reporter: how delivering her second batch to the very hospital where she was born to some of the very same people who cared for her. >> i think i just really wanted to give back to my own community and to the community that helped me through the first few months of my life. >> reporter: jasmine has yet to see a premature infant wearing one of her donations, but also knows when she does, what an

surgery to repair his broken hand. yesterday bumgarner had three pins inserted into the broken pinkie on his pitching hand. the pins will stay in for four to six weeks. then it will take a couple weeks to build up his arm strength before he is ready to return to the rotation. bumgarner was hurt after getting hit by a line drive during friday's spring training game against the royals. larry gerston is here this morning. larry, this is pervasive, how pervasive is it among state lawmakers? >> apparently more pervasive than we might think. over the past year three male members of the california legislature have resigned over allegations of sexual harassment. a fourth female lenls later has voluntarily suspended herself while awaiting the results of a legislative investigation. by the way, all four legislators are democrats which could become an issue later for republicans in this election year. >> you mean for them to use it against their challengers or opponents. >> absolutely. >> how much of a factor is the me too movement in bringing these issues to light and why do you think it's become such a big issue now with so much attention? >> for the longest time accusations of people in power were swept under the rug but the women's me too movement has taken route in the trump era differently than in the past. who could forget that outrageous

tape with the president's own words as well as the 16 women who accused him of various crimes. that moment may have been a tipping point. the recent explosion of sexual abuse and harassment claims in the business, entertainment, media and the sports communities have heightened public awareness about this form of exploitation and as we have seen claims of sexual impropriety have excluded in the political world as well including california state legislature. >> we bring it home. what are we doing about it? what are lawmakers here in the state going to try to do to fix this problem? >> it's interesting. until recently, virtually nothing. in fact, the legislature kept allegation records secret until last january. only the threat of litigation by the los angeles times forced the legislature to release information of past and current allegations against sitting legislators and their staff members. the irony is that the legislature has no set of rules or policies dealing with sexual

harassment allegations against their own members. instead legislators operate with a 49-page set of rules governing their behavior when all kinds of activities ranging from recovering expenses to drawing boundaries of fish and wildlife districts, but nothing -- nothing on sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior. >> so they need to get with the program in 2018, get those rules on paper. what do those rules need to say? >> okay. we still don't know exactly what they're going to say, but at the moment either chamber can with just a two-thirds vote reprimand, censure or suspend a member for wrongdoing, whatever that means, it's a squishy rule that seems to leave wrongdoing without any firm definition, but last january legislative leaders felt the pressure and established a special committee to develop new uniform rules and processes to investigate claims of sexual improprieties while protecting those who come forward with allegations.

so at long last they're moving. >> okay. and we're talking about a special committee that will come up with this set of rules. do we think it will have a meaningful or lasting impact or are we talking about another report that gets buried. >> that remains to be seen. these days, vicky, these days are different. we know that. people especially women are mobilized on this issue, much more intensely than in the past. and with midterm elections only seven and a half months away, those in office no he that if they don't reform past injustices they may just pay the ultimate price by being thrown out of office. >> we have a little bit of time left. we had the interview with former playmate karen mcdougal who alleges an affair with the president back in 2006. tonight stormy daniels will be speaking out on "60 minutes." what kind of impact do you think this is going to have? clearly the american public has always had a fascination with the private lives of

presidential -- presidents and presidential candidates, but we are in such a different era now. >> the daniels story itself is old news. what's new news is the cover up and the $130,000 allegedly paid just before the election. that's the stuff that's important, i think, and we are going to learn a lot more about it tonight and this story like so many other stories with this president is not about to go away. it clouds other issues. it prevents the president from putting forth his own agenda because he's constantly forced to deal with this issue. notice how quiet he is. he's quiet because there's nothing good he can say about it. but tonight i think perhaps a little bit more light will be shed on this issue. >> larry, as always, we appreciate your political insight this morning. still ahead on "today in the bay," an offer out of oakland. the a's are pitching a parking discount to giant's fans. what they have to do, though, they gates for today's battle of the bay. and some spots are clearing out after a couple scattered showers. we've got nice cloud cover over

thanks to our weather underground camera. as far as our temperatures go, we are in the 30s and 40s, if you are heading out now please bundle up. i want to get to storm ranger our mobile doppler radar because it is up and scanning in our parking lot, it's actually that red scan right there, that white scan that you see is the national weather service. if i zoom this in closer and show you exactly where we're seeing some of that rain picking up, we saw some rain move in through portola valley, now we're seeing that trekking out further east, we've seen showers push through livermore, altamonte as well and we even got shots of lower elevation snow. your microclimate highs for today will be fairly comfortable, we will remain in the upper 50s for the most part and our outlook for today we are keeping the showers through the afternoon. right now future cast is showing the possibility of seeing isolated rain through the evening hours. daytime highs in san jose 60 degrees, oakland 58, santa rosa 58 degrees, ukiah 53 and along the coastline also expect mid to

upper 50s as well. now, let's take a look at that hour by hour forecast. if i past forward this timeline to about 11:30 you see we've got a couple spotty showers here and there, it's not going to be a complete washout as we head towards the afternoon, in fact, some spots will probably get a number of peeks of sunshine including san francisco right now, it looks like it's cleared out nicely behind the early morning showers. if i fast forward that timeline until 5:00, 6:00, you see that we have a couple pop up showers here and there, but for the most part into tonight and early tomorrow morning at about 7:30 look at how beautiful we clear out. we are not expecting any cloud cover as we head in towards tomorrow's morning commute, you don't have to worry about wet roads and we will start off our workweek on a drying end, a warming trend that's expected to be on the way. if you are heading up to sierra this is what it looks like in kirkwood lake tahoe right now, about 19 degrees right now. they also saw a couple more inches of snowfall thanks to that storm system that moved in within the past couple of days

and your current snow pack right now, the sierra snow pack versus the average, northern california is at about 44%, central 65%, southern 57% and statewide we are at about 56%. we are still behind in terms of what's supposed to be the average, but we've definitely caught up a bit. now, as far as your long range outlook, once these showers make their exit in through tonight, right behind that we can expect to see this ridge of high pressure and that's going to be blocking some of these incoming storms making it breezy at times and of course we're expecting drier and warmer temperatures ahead for the next several days. so let's get right to that seven-day forecast. it's going to be breezy at times as we head in towards tomorrow. if you notice by the icons we clear out quite nicely as we head in towards tuesday and then we really start to notice the warming trend towards the middle of the workweek, upper 70s in the forecast as we head in towards thursday, 79 degrees and the weekend ahead so far is also trending a lot warmer starting

out -- well, actually, rather, ending the month of march on a much drier note than how we started. now, we are expecting to see this warming drying trend remain on tap for the next several days. we have to get through these couple of showers that are left behind with this last trough that made its way in overnight. not too bad. >> with the sun in sight, it makes it a little easier to cope with so much rain that we've been dealing with. vianey, thank you. the a's are hosting the giants at the coliseum today for the bay bridge series accept another. one catch, though, giants fans will have to pay $50 to park instead of the $30 charged to a's fans. what gives? there is one way to get a discount, in i giant's fan who yells go a's at the parking gates will get $20 off so then they pay the same fee charged to a's fans. is it a gimmicks? >> the athletics having a lot of fun. they're trying to convert giants fans. the a's will do this again in

late july. i wonder if people will pay that extra 20 bucks. >> i would yell go a's. nasa astronauts arrived yesterday at the international space station, the two men made a successful 50 hour trip from kazakhstan. they will work on hundreds of biology and earth sciences experiments over the next five months, the crew men are planning to go outside on a space walk next week. and shoppers with a sweet tooth were in for a big treat this weekend at a mall in atlanta. a giant key lime pie was made to raise awareness for tourism in the florida keys. the dessert was prepared with more than 5,000 key lines from the keys and served 2,500 pieces of pie. that's one of my favorite desserts. you and i could fit in that pie.
