mike, you spotted slowing around the caldecott tunnel. i did, and there's not a lot of slowing through the bay. san jose up toward san francisco and through the east bay most has cleared. there was a disabled vehicle, i told you about that last report, we saw a little slowing approaching the tunnel, it clearly has cleared up. a little more traffic around berkeley on the surface streets. the bay bridge there is another incident showing up on our blotter. it was reported a hit and run on the overcrossing but i haven't seen traffic interrupted. these cash lanes are starting to move better. the backup is now going to start to thin out just before it builds again for the metering lights in about a half an hour. continuing coverage now on the interview a lot of folks are going to be talking about this morning, the adult film star who claims she had an intimate encounter with president trump more than a decade ago says she was threatened when she tried to go public.

stormy daniels told her story to "60 minutes." "today in the bay's" tracie potts is in washington, d.c. with what else she's revealing in this interview. >> reporter: hi, kris. good morning. it's not really the encounter but much more so that alleged threat that's getting so much attention this morning. and reaction, a cease and desist letter from the lawyer for president trump's attorney michael cohen who says he was never involved in any threat and he wants an apology for what he says are false statements in that interview. >> and you had sex with him. >> yes. >> adult film star stormy daniels tells "60 minutes" she was a willing participant in the alleged sexual encounter in 2006, but five years later after she unsuccessfully tried to sell her story, this. >> a guy walked up on me and said to me, leave trump alone. forget the story. and then he leaned around and looked at my daughter and said, a beautiful little girl, it would be a shame if something

happened to her mom. >> reporter: president trump's attorney michael cohn says he never threatened daniels but admits to paying her $130,000 before the election to keep quiet. the group common cause is asking the justice department and federal election commission to investigate whether that was an illegal campaign contribution. cohn says it was his money and neither the trump organization nor the campaign reimbursed him. daniels claims the president never signed her nondisclosure agreement so it's invalid. she later denied the affair in writing. >> i was concerned for my family and their safety. i felt intimidated and honestly bullied and i didn't know what to do and so i signed it. >> reporter: daniels won't say if she has videos, texts or e-mails from president trump. the white house denies the affair ever happened. we have yet to hear from the

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of san mateo county sheriff's office. this in redwood city with what we know about those inmates. bob, how long have they been missing? >> reporter: marcus, it wasn't even been 12 hours yet. the san mateo county sheriff's office indicates that the two young men left the facility, they are considered to be, quote, walk a ways, this is around 9:45 last night. we did reach out to the sheriff's office overnight but they have refused to give us an update on the search for these

two young men. we put this map together for you so you can get a sense of where this camp is located. it's called the glenwood camp correctional facility, located along log cabin ranch road in la honda up in the hills. it's an area that's mountainous and rugged. the san mateo county office of education runs the camp. it's described as a minimum security residential facility for boys who function below grade level in school because they are not always attending class and that they lack the necessary skills. now, here is the description that the sheriff's office put out for these two inmates, it's a broad description, one inn melania trump is described -- they say he's 18 years old, african-american, the other one is a 17-year-old and they describe him as being polynesian. both were last seen wearing gray sweatpants and gray sweatshirts. reporting live in redwood city, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:04 right now. happening today san carlos leaders debate on a plan to

expand the use of license plate cameras and data collection. 2015 san carlos installed a dozen license plate readers at strategic locations around the city. council members are looking into adding readers along another major intersection and expanding the retention of the data from six months to one year. costs to cover the expansion would be slightly more than $100,000. a developing story now terrifying moments for feral 200 passengers on board caltrain last night. a train reportedly hit a car in palo alto just before 11:00 last night at the charleston road crossing. fortunately no one in the car was hurt, but there were 173 passengers on the train at the time. so far no reports of any injury. trains in the area were stopped, but things are back to normal this morning. a developing story out of san francisco. police are investigating a deadly stabbing outside of the chinese christian church. police say that a woman was stabbed yesterday on chester avenue. paramedics rushed the woman to

the hospital, but she did not make it. they also took the man to the hospital. police believe he may have been stabbed or at least stabbed himself. neighbors say that they were surprised that this happened outside of an otherwise quiet church. >> once in awhile we will have something going on during the week, but it's quiet, peaceful bunch of people. >> police say the homicides unit is investigating this one. they believe that crime is connected to domestic violence. there seems to be a new twist in how san francisco's new police taser policy is taking shape. the police officers union is spear heading a june ballot measure. according to the chronicle mayor mark farrell is pulling his support for that measure. that's because police commissioners recently approved a new taser policy he believes is sufficient. that policy differs in language over when officers can use the devices and gives officers less leeway. union leaders still want voters to decide. facebook is responding to

allegations about its storage of usage data as the company still makes amends for the recent scandal surrounding cambridge analytica. yesterday facebook paid for full page newspaper ads in the u.s. and in the uk, this to apologize for its role in the scandal. at the same time facebook is admitting that some of its app store phone call and data usage from those phone contacts. those android apps will ask for access when first activated. as for facebook's latest apology, reaction is mixed. >> that's not a solution, it's a little apology, you know. it's an apology of the week. >> ever since the cambridge analytica scandal broke some users have been deleting their pages. the social media network has almost lost billions of dollars in its share price. and right now at 5:08 we are going to see a mostly clear and school morning as we go through the day it's going to be nice,

finally feeling like spring. i shouldn't say finally, this is our first full week of spring and we will be up to 62 degrees today in san francisco. in concord 66 degrees, also 66 today in san jose and in napa 63 degrees. if you're going hiking in the south bay at noon we will be at 57 degrees and we will be reaching our high temperature throughout the afternoon at about 4:00 so until then we will be warming up and a lot of sunshine and definitely a good day to get out there and spend a lot more time than we have been able to spend recently. getting out of san francisco heading south on 101 we will show you overall the speed sensors look freight around the bay, no major problems, the crowd is starting to build over at the bay bridge of course, we will talk about that in a second. ontd the peninsula side we are looking at southbound 101 at paw avenue, a large piece of comment in the roadway. be careful. hopefully there will be a quick

good morning, contessa. >> good morning. wall street set to open sharply higher this morning, the dow jones industrial futures up more than 400 points following the big selloff thursday and friday. the dow coming off its worst week in more than two years. some traders say worries about a global trade war may be easing after the u.s. said it will exempt south extra e. from steel tariffs. this week we're looking for data on housing, consumer confidence and gdp. the nasdaq ended the week down 174. gun maker remington has tiled for bankruptcy as it faces a mountain of debt, falling sales and lawsuits tied to the sandy hook elementary shooting. the filing was delayed a month because of the school shooting, in fact, in parkparkland, flori. they will hand over control to their creditors in exchange for wiping most of the debt from its books. it was founded in 1816 and remington is one of america's oldest and largest makers of

morning and as we take a live look outside in san francisco we are going to have the type of weather that will have you bundling up in the morning and peeling off the layers as the day goes along. as that seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen in the south bay, take a look at how warm it's going to be and look at where we are right now. 35 degrees in napa, that's our coldest temperature on the map here. 36 in livermore and 45 now in san jose, palo alto and in oakland. san francisco 46 degrees. now, if you're going out for a jog in san francisco this morning right around sunrise we will be in the mid 40s, but then as the day goes into late morning we will be at 52 degrees at 11:00 and noon, 54 degrees, it does continue to climb as we go into this afternoon. here is a look the you are high today, 65 degrees and in east san jose and morgan hill, east bay up to 64 degrees in danville, oakland 63 and 62 in san mateo. the coast up to 60 in half-moon

bay and 62 in the mission district, north bay, 65 degrees in santa rosa and noeft at thva degrees. we have this large area of high pressure, it causes the air to sink and will be warming as it does so. as we go through the week it will continue to warm up and the rain stays to the north and also to the south of much of the state. so nothing going on here throughout this seven-day forecast. it will not change. look at our warmest day on thursday. 74 degrees. here is how you make those plans. it's going to be a day to take the kids out to the park, go to the zoo, do anything, because it's going to be so nice and definitely feeling like spring, maybe even more like late spring, mike. you're starting back and what's happening in san francisco. it's feeling like spring break, at least last week was, a lot of college students on spring break last week. looking over toward much of the bay. san jose up into san francisco no major problems as far as

of the beta theta pi fraternity at penn state will head back to it's 523 tok now. today several former members of the bay at that faye at that pi fraternity at penn state will head back to court adds they face new charges following the death of a fellow member. today's court hearing will focus on refiled charges against the defendants. 19-year-old timothy piazza died after prosecutors say he was forced to drink heavily at that fraternity.

he eventually fell down a flight of stairs. instead of getting medical help he was moved to a couch. he later died from the injuries. prosecution is expected to show video from the basement surveillance camera that has not been seen before. prosecutors say the footage was deleted by a defendant but later recovered by the fbi. new disturbing allegations are surfacing about the air to the anheuser busch fortune. billy booush assaulted a sixth grader, the altercation reportedly came after an alleged fight between the child and booush's child in november. recent reports say busch advanced the 11-year-old and his son in a pushing match. a statement from his attorney say that busch's son was bullied and sucker punched a student directly in front of him. busch is expected to answer in court to those assault charges this week. how dangerous is your child's hoverboard. this morning we are taking a closer look at research that

reveals 26,000 kids were treated for hoverboard injuries during the first years they were sold in the u.s. a new york presbyterian hospital study tracked emergency room records from 2015 and 2016 and they show fractures, contusions, sprains were the most common hoverboard injuries and despite the headlines there were no reported burns from malfunctioning batteries. at 5:25 new this morning experts say when it comes to credit cards many of us are doing one thing a little too long, we actually hold on to that same card. a new report out this morning says about 50 million americans have become so loyal to credit cards that they already have that they don't look into changing the credit card for a better deal. >> chances are they were changing it from their training wheels card which might have had crumby rewards, high fees and a high interest rate to a card that fits their life better. >> so a lot of what keeps

kari hall with a look at the bright forecast. >> it does look really bright, a lot of sunshine and it's going to be warmer today than it was yesterday. so if you were out there, you were like, okay, this is pretty nice today even better. 62 degrees in san francisco and 63 degrees in napa and in oakland. palo alto 64 degrees and san jose up to 66 degrees. if you're wondering how we're doing for the month of march and where we stand as far as how much rain we've had recently, we have seen a surplus across much of the bay area in some cases more than double the amount of rain, that's what we had in san francisco, and in livermore, but in san jose a little bit less than we normally get. i will talk about how much this catches us up to normal for the water year and also we will take a look ahead to the weekend in seven minutes. mike says we are right on schedule this morning. >> that's right. which means we have the backup at the bay bridge right on schedule. metering lights turned on just after 5:20, about 5:21 this morning and the backup has built. it's gentle through the maze, a

"today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in san mateo with the man that police are looking for now and how big a threat this man might be. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris and marcus, yes, we're standing in front of the san

mateo foster city school district where they made that decision on sunday to increase security presence around their schools as a result of this threat, but here is what san mateo police is doing as far as getting the public's help in trying to find this suspect. let's show you a surveillance picture of when that man that they're looking for was inside of that big five sporting goods store this past friday. now, according to police they're saying a customer overheard him telling an employee he was going to purchase a firearm and threatened to shoot up a school with it. in fact, police say he also asked the employee what would be a good shirt to wear while doing it. now, when police arrived at the store on friday they said they were not able to locate him, they did an extensive search, could not locate him. that's why they're putting out the surveillance picture to get the public's help. we will show you the description, we just showed you that picture, but he's described as an adult white male in his 30s, 35 years old is what police are saying and he appears to be a transient in the community. police are saying that witnesses

in the store did not find his statement to be credible. they don't want to take any chances with this. if you have any information to help with the case to locate that suspect contact san mateo police. live in foster city, pete suratos for "today in the bay." at 5:33 happening today it's back to work for congress this morning. a live look now in washington where there will be yet another gun control rally. this comes of course after millions of people protested for the march for our lives rally this weekend. "today in the bay's" rod slater is live in san jose. roz, what can we expect today from a lot of those people protesting? >> reporter: more protests, these protesters, these young activists are certainly not letting up and d.c. of course is ground zero, an estimated 800,000, a record number in the nation's capitol alone this weekend. today in d.c. another group, they are calling themselves we the people for sensible gun laws, will hold a rally in front of the white house. among them will be the father of a virginia news reporter killed live on television.

that rally of course follows a weekend of march for our lives rallies in 800 sites including right here in the bay area. in san francisco tens of thousands of demonstrators turned out for the rally at the civic center, many of them young speakers or very, very young. after the deadly school shooting in parkland, florida, students began making plans for a march on washington and the idea spread. now, we will show you pictures from oakland where our nbc bay area chopper flew over city hall. about 2,000 demonstrators gathered there to hear from organizers and other speakers. in the south bay here thousands more marched, many were students marching with their parents demanding changes in the gun laws. the marchers began at city hall and made their way to the arena green area to meet with a student who had been a survivor of gun violence. these young activists vowing they are not going to let up, they will keep the pressure on.

congress is back, the president is back and the protesters will be back on message. live in san jose, i'm roz plater, "today in the bay." for continuing coverage on the rallies here in the bay area we did post a slide show on our website, that is, nbcbayarea.com. and happening tomorrow human rights groups plan to show up in alamo to oppose members of the national hate group. you may have heard that many of those people are westboro baptist church, this is based in kansas, but from time to time members have brought their radical causes to the bay area. now they are planning to protest over what they say is an issue regarding transgender police tied to local elementary schools. the aclu is among groups calling for counter protests. the reverend al sharpton is among those planning to attend the funeral for an unarmed man shot and killed by sacramento police. stephon clark was holding a

cellphone when officers shot and killed him on march 18th. police say they didn't know it was a cellphone, they thought it was a gun. police body camera video shows officers firing 20 times after telling clark to show his hands. that shooting sparked outage and protests in the sacramento area. the sacramento kings basketball team is among those showing support for stephon clark. before last night's game you can see the players wearing black t-shirts, they read, accountability, we are one. on the back there is a hashtag with stephon clark's name on t listen as police called this a tragedy, but also an activist who calls for change. >> you perpetrate this kid as a criminal when you're saying he's breaking into homes. if anyone is breaking into homes that don't mean they deserve to be executed. >> obviously this is a very tragic event and with a tragic event, you know, ideally we take something that we could all learn from. >> sacramento city council members plan to discuss this

shooting at a hearing tomorrow and activists say they plan to be there. 5:36. developing this morning, so far no confirmation from police about whether a man was driving drunk when he smashed into about a dozen cars parked along the same block in san jose. the neighbors did spring into action and detained that man until police arrived. this happened early yesterday morning on menker avenue south of scott street. neighbors say after smashing into one car that driver then zigzagged down the street striking more cars before coming to a stop. >> the whole neighborhood was out here trying to stop him, they were crowded around his car, we opened his door, took his seat belt off and just pulled him out and we were trying to have him lay there until the authorities came. >> the neighbors tell us this was not the first time this has happened. they say it seems like at least once a month someone strikes a car along that same street. they are asking the city to install speed bumps. all right.

right now we have a nice smooth flow south bay up towards the peninsula and also over in the east bay. i will show you over here, we typically see this slowing westbound 580 out of the altamonte all the way over on your right. no major problems through livermore on the dublin interchange. we have a minor crash it sounds like, initial reports coming in west 580 around grant line so that will be an issue for folks off of the merge 205 and 580 tend to slow down there anyway. getting over toward the bay bridge a smooth easy drive, a little slower down the east shore freeway and of course the metering lights are on as they always are. >> it's a good thing to talk about weekend weather when you have spring break in the forecast. >> we're planning for the week and also the weekend, too. we know it's going to be all clear and much warmer, too. here is a look at your saturday forecast, 68 degrees for the coast and inland areas up to 65, the bay at 72 and you will also see much more sunshine on

sunday. up to 72, slightly cooler in a few spots, 70 for the bay and the coast at 68 degrees. what are you doing this weekend? how about hitting the road and going to kirkwood. that's where we will have a lot more sunshine, you shouldn't have any issues getting there and there will be some more clouds in the mix on saturday, but sunday we will keep those low 40s and it will be all clear with sunshine. carmel valley also will see a few clouds drifting by on saturday, but looking like it will be the warmest on friday. so if you can get there for friday afternoon, it will be up to 77 degrees and then a touch cooler for the rest of the weekend, but still really pleasant. and then muir woods also with some warm weather will be in the low 70s on friday, but mid to upper 60s for the rest of the weekend and also some sunshine. once again let me know what you're doing this weekend, i'm@kari hall weather and i'm tell you make plans as we go

impaired. a new video this morning of a dramatic water rescue during heavy rains last week in sacramento. this is a drone shot, a video there, rescuers in a raft approaching that driver stranded on top of their car in fast moving water. the crew throws the stranded driver a life vest and the driver then jumps into the raft. the california office of emergency services released the video calling it a reminder to take flooded roadways very seriously. and a developing story out of russia this morning. the death toll continues to rise after a fire at a shopping mall in siberia. we now know 64 people died after flames swept through the top floor of that mall yesterday. at least 11 of the victims are children. it took crews more than 12 hours to knock down that fire and many people are still missing and unaccounted for this morning. so far russian authorities don't know the cause of the fire. now to a disturbing crime in the north bay.

deputies arrested a homeless man in larkfield in the sonoma county area, this is after they say that he tried to lure a teenage girl in his car. they say that suspect, 47-year-old timothy james kottler, opened the door of the car and when that girl refused he asked her for her phone number. police say kottler noticed a man nearby watching that encounter so he drove away. kottler has since been released but authorities want to share his booking photo because they believe he could still be a threat to the community. new this morning the number of drug related deaths in the u.s. has spiked over the past two decades but some areas of the country are more affected by this crisis than others and that includes northern california. overnight we took a closer look at a syracuse university study that shows there are major geographical differences in drug mortality rates. drug deaths were significantly higher in oklahoma, parts of the southwest and northern

california. they were much lower in parts of the northeast, mississippi, alabama, texas and the great plains. researchers tied the mortality rates with counties with greater economic or family distress. at 5:46 we're learning new details this morning about a mysterious death of a family of four in mexico. authorities are now saying that they died from inhaling toxic gas in their condo. new images show inside their beach side condo located an hour from cancun. the bodies of kevin and amy sharp and their children sterling and adrianna were discovered early friday. new for this morning we're hearing from their family after this tragic loss. >> it's a loss, i never thought i would be in this situation. we have comfort knowing they are together, the way they wanted to be, the four of them were together, they're at peace. we will see them again. >> mexican authorities say that they are still investigating

their deaths and will release more detailed information on those findings later today. police in los angeles are getting ready for spring break in a way only lapd really can, they're beefing up patrols around the hollywood sign. a spike in spring break tourism tends to draw more crowds to that landmark that is hard to get through and you have to pass through private property to get there. it brings more traffic to surrounding neighborhoods. extra staffing will be covered by a temporary increase in funds for police and traffic enforcement around the sign. happening today, energy secretary rick perry is coming to the bay area for a three-day tour of local labs. perry plans to visit at the lawrence livermore national laboratory today, it will be his first trip to that lab. then tomorrow perry is set to stop by the berkeley lab, mr. perry will wrap up his stay on wednesday after he goes to the stanford linear accelerator center. officials say that they are honored to show perry the labs

important contributions to science and technology. now to a story all new for you this morning on "today in the bay," this spring break many college students will head south, soak up some sun but they are not heading to the beach. >> this week 23 students from uc berkeley will ditch the sandy beaches and head to the rooftops of oakland and slalinas. they will help install solar panels on homes of people are bow income. the students did the same thing last year, this is video of them doing it, they look like they're having a grad time. great alternatives provides the training for the student volunteers, they also provide the solar panels at no cost for families trying to scrape by in the bay area. 11 cal students will head to oakland, 13 will head to salinas. all of them to participate in the two solar installations in addition to completing community service on alcatraz. >> wow. >> right? >> i can't say that i gave up my spring break to do something so

with all of that rain last week you were wondering are we caught up for the water year. we got for the water year since october 1st in santa rosa more than 20 inches of rain, but we are still lacking about 11 inches of rain. so we are at 64% of normal. i know this is hard to believe, even though in some spots we got double the amount of march rain, it just came a little bit too late and so we're mostly at about 58 to in the low 70% range. we have a clear start this morning, we will have more dry weather. this large area of high pressure that causes the air to be clear and also warm up keeps the rain also well to the north and to the south of the bay area. so this is a look at our week, it's going to warm up, the warmest day on thursday. 74 degrees in san francisco, it cools down just a bit for the weekend but it's still going to be really nice. inland areas reaching near 80 degrees by thursday. we will be watching that. and, mike, now you have a new crash reported on the san mateo bridge. i was listening to your report as well, but there are

two new incidents that came in while you were reporting. so we will talk about the first one, eastbound 92 that's coming over toward this shot away from the peninsula, there was a crash reported somewhere around the high-rise, westbound your commute direction continues to build just because of the morning commute, the normal one. eastbound i did see thinning traffic and a big burst over the last two minutes. they may have moved that vehicle from that eastbound direction. we don't see the slowing yet. we will see if they have been able to clear that. this other crash looks like it's causing slowing in san jose, it's not. north 101 typically shows up towards oakland road about this time, that's the first burst, it will thin out and build again. the crash is south 880 at 101 in san jose and out of lanes from what i can tell. this one over here causing the biggest slowdown out of the altamonte toward grant line road, blocking two lanes. that is one issue. the other is at the castro valley y a mild build towards your commute across the westbound direction of the san mateo bridge. back to you.
