san jose. all clear this morning. let's go to the neighborhood of evergreen. we will be in the mid 40s through 8:00 and reaching into the upper 60s and even some low 70s. we will talk about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, the crew has been busy at the bay bridge. >> kari, some folks might have heard about a disabled big rig which was o blocking most of the lanes around 4:00 this morning. the bridge crew got it clearly very quickly so we had no slowing until the last few minutes. i will show you over here the sensors may slow approaching fremont. we did hear about a fender-bender near the fremont exit. no slowing, but that will develop possibly over the next few minutes. taking a zoom out to the rest of the bay, we see a smooth easy drive, those speed sensors dipping out at the altamonte pass for westbound 580 right on typical schedule. back to you. 4:31 right now. new this morning one man is in

custody after a high speed chase spanning three counties and four freeways that ended overnight in the east bay. it started on the bay bridge near treasure island and went along interstate 80 to 580 on to highway 24 and 680 before ending in pleasant hill. take a listen. [ sirens ] >> so cameras caught that chase as it was happening a little after midnight with a fleet of patrol cars pursuing a van. the chp says it veered into the construction lane on the bay bridge and a patrol car tried to pull the van over. it wound up in a cul-de-sac where he did surrender. the chp is investigating whether that driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. our bob redell will have a live report coming up in the 5:00 hour. san mateo police say that they found a man who threatened to shoot up a school, the threat left parents and students

rattled. "today in the bay's" gene elie has more on what police are doing as they track down that suspect. >> reporter: a man accused of threatening to shoot up a school during a stop at big 5 is in custody, telling san mateo police it was a joke, but with school shootings a national focus security at schools on the peninsula was tight. >> it's pretty disconcerting to have to have that conversation with an 11-year-old. >> parents had to explain why officers were so visible. police say that man made the threats friday. >> it was a hard day, really hard. >> the san mateo foster city school district puts its 21 campuses on heightened alert, putting teachers, parents and students on edge. cara's sixth grader didn't go to school. >> do you think you feel sick because you're nervous about what's p been going on or do you really feel sick? he said i really feel sick. >> reporter: some middle school parents showed up at a school board meeting. they didn't want to talk on camera but pointed out this line

in the community alert, it says all gates and doors will be locked, but barell doesn't have a gate or perimeter fence, a security measure parents say is long overdue. >> i think it probably is this day and age, yes. some of the kids are changing classes on the sidewalk around here. >> reporter: the district says the plan is to install it this summer. >> barell middle school will be our last school to have complete fencing and it has taken an extended period of time because of the ada rules. >> while its expected to be business as usual as schools, some parents say they are eagle to see campuses as secure as possible. a developing story out of d.c. this morning, the fbi is investigating suspicious packages containing explosive contents sent to military sites and intelligence facilities. the first one was discovered yesterday morning at national defense university in d.c. six similar packages turned up

at other military intelligence locations. law enforcement officials say the packages were all sent through the mail and quickly rendered safe. >> bombs sent through the mail are rigged to detonate when they're opened so they can sit there forever. the bomb squad can do a render safe procedure on a live bomb or it could be a hoax. >> federal officials say they don't believe any of these packages make from mark conditt, he is the man accused of three weeks of deadly terror in austin, texas. happening this morning a kansas church with a history of spreading hateful messages is expected to do the same in the east bay. members of the westboro baptist church will be at alamo's ranch elementary school claiming they discuss gender identity. they held a similar protest in walnut creek last week. we did take a look at the past notable protests.

protesters protested at matthew shepherd's funeral. in 2006 the group protested at the funeral of matthew snyder, a u.s. marine killed in iraq. a lawsuit followed, but the supreme court sided with the church's right to protest. the church also protested after the pulse nightclub shooting. the san carlos city council has approved adding another license plate reader in the city. there are already about a dozen such readers in san carlos. late last night the council voted to expand the program and keep the data collected for up to a year rather than six months. costs to cover the expansion would be slightly more than $100,000. coming up on "today in the bay," will yesterday's big gains on wall street continue? next an early check of the market. and race to the top. all new, apple's push to return to the head of the class when it comes to the devices that your child's school uses. plus it's raining pizza in

that the u.s. and china are willing to negotiate on tariffs and that eased concerns of a possible global trade war. the dow jumped 669 points, its third best point gain ever, the nasdaq rose more than 3% and dow futures up now 132 points. apple is hoping to return to the head of the class in the competition to get its high tech devices into u.s. classrooms. it's expected to give more details about a renewed education effort at an event today at a chicago high school. apple's curriculum may include a lower surprised ipad and services tailored for students k through 12, but it's google that has emerged as the real education leader with a nearly 60% share of the market thanks to its more affordable chrome books. bmw is getting into the car subscription business, a pilot program will reportedly begin in nashville next week. the service called access by bmw is similar no those already offered by cadillac and volvo. it allows users to change car models more often than with a

door this morning in santa rosa 45 degrees and also 45 in oakland, in palo alto it is 49 and 46. now, some of us step out the door it's like, okay, it's about the same as yesterday, but check out napa, it is 15 degrees warmer right now than it was yesterday at this time. in san francisco it's ten degrees warmer. as we go through the day it will definitely be warmer for the afternoon reaching into the low 70s for san jose and morgan hill. gilroy today expect a high of 73 degrees. also low 70s, mid 70s for parts of the east bay, 72 in livermore and 69 today in oakland. 69 also in san mateo and 63 on the embarcadero today. 74 in novato. so as we go throughout the day in oakland it's going to start out cool, but very nice even by lunchtime, you will be at 63 degrees so take the lunch outside. getting dressed this morning you do need something warm for the morning but it's a day, again,

about layers. you need a jacket and then short sleeves for the afternoon once we hit those low to mid 70s. we are going to see our weather pattern staying the same as this strong area of high pressure stays with us and no rain in the forecast as long as that's in place. we see that happening throughout at least early next week and our warmest day in the forecast will be on thursday, some low 70s, low 80s for inland areas and slightly cooler for the weekend but very nice over the next several days. mike, how is it looking on the roads? >> we will take you right back to the bay bridge because this crew is moving and working quickly this morning. look at these lights, taillights why i showed you before the break those taillights were stacking up getting in towards san francisco. this incline never really slowed. we talked about the crash over there west 80 at fremont, i say the slow lane is blocked on this sign right here, that's because in the last couple seconds before i could clear that they reportedly pushed that slowly

off of the bridge so that will be cleared. you saw the traffic moving a little better. once again westbound 80 the bay bridge should be okay getting in toward the city. we are looking over at the little build out of the altamonte pass, nothing big. the east bay, peninsula all moving slowly, even the south bay northbound commute doesn't start for another hour and a half or so. 17 moves nicely to and from santa cruz and 101 no delays. back to you. 4:49. express lanes on bay area freeways should help speed up your commute but the question you need to ask is are you being charged to use them when you haven't. >> vicky nguyen has a preview of what she uncovered and what you should watch for. >> reporter: we learned bay area drivers have been billed for more than a million dollars in mistaken fiennes anes and you m know unless you check your fast track statement.

includes here in the golden state. today bay area congress members jackie speier and mike thompson will told a meeting on the impact of that meeting. that meeting starts at 11:00 in sausalito. a live look at the golden gate bridge. even though the suicide barrier is years from completion it is being considered as a model for other california bridges. san diego union tribune reports people there would like to see a solution to stop suicides off of the coronado bridge. that's where over the past six years about 100 people have ended their lives. caltrans is now looking at proposals that include a netting plan. the hope is that it will be built within the next decade. >> plans are changing for a small california town that was supposed to become a pot friendly resort destination. we've told you about the story before. a phoenix based marijuana company bought nipton a ghost town in the mow labby desert last year. they planned to create a pot

vacation spot but that's not going to happen. the city was sold again, this time to an oil company that buys land for drilling. coming up on "today in the bay," a strong message from in-n-out burgers to pranksters that are targeting the restaurant chain. san jose's based cisco is donating $50 million to fight homelessness in santa clara company. they are encouraging other silicon valley companies to step up. also right now french prosecutors say they are treating an elderly woman's murder as a hate crime. she is jewish and survived the holocaust but two people stabbed her to death on friday. they say this is part of a recent rise in anti-semitism all across europe.

and good tuesday morning to you as we're back here on "today in the bay." taking live look in san bruno right now. as you can see the lights are twinkling and the people are on the go. we are here to help you get started with the day. the search continues in stockton for three suspects in a deadly hit and run crash that happened on sunday. surveillance cameras show that crash and you can see a car driving through that intersection when an suv slams right into it. the driver of that car did not survive. police say the driver of the suv was racing with another car wet of the crash. two people from the suv then ran on foot from the scene, the other car involved in the race drove away. and another dramatic crash caught on tape, this time in florida. look at the top right of your screen there, you can see a toddler flying out of the back seat of that white sedan after

it was struck by a pickup truck. the toddler was thrown on to the sidewalk. the out of control sedan almost hit the child again but missed and luckily that toddler is doing just fine this morning. police are now investigating whether the child safety seat was properly secured. in-n-out says there is an increase in pranksters who are intentionally being disrupted and posting the videos on social media. the orange county register says that the chain has filed a restraining order and is seeking damages from one of those visitors in l.a. in-n-out says that that man claimed to be the ceo and then argued with workers. in one incident the company said that a man took a hamburger from a customer and threw it on the ground and then stepped on it. >> that's so rude. what's the point? so this saturday is cesar chavez day and it honors the siefl rights leader and labor movement activist on his birthday. >> later this morning at the contra costa board of supervisors meeting the board

we know these days. it's going to be mostly sunny as we go into the afternoon. it's going to be a really nice day. we do start out with clear skies looking live right now in san jose. i wanted to show you these high temperatures because i think you will like t we are talking about some low 70s for the inland areas, even some mid 70s for spots like concord and in napa and santa rosa. 65 today in san francisco. we will break it down, show you some things going on around the bay area coming up. mike, we're seeing the ripple effect across the bay. >> we talked about the crash that slowly cleared from the bay bridge over at the fremont street exit, things were moving smoothly there over on the far side. on the close side we are looking at the incline, it was quite slow for a few minutes as that rippled back here as recovery continues. you know how that happens at a stop signal. that's what was going on over at the bay bridge itself. we had the backup at the bay bridge as well, the toll plaza, but it looks like things are starting to thin out at the toll plaza so they must have kept everything clear as far as the metering lights goes
