good morning. it is thursday morning. let's look out at the bay bridge this morning. it is a beautiful start to the day. a little cool. it is going to be very warm, though. the south bay is already getting there. thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia who is still recovering from laryngitis. >> and i'm marcus washington. >> it's going to be really warm and yesterday it was quite cozy for the afternoon, and it's going to be even higher today as we reach into the low 80s. here is a live look outside in san jose. we start out with the mid-50s. let's go to campbell. we'll be in the 50s throughout 9:00 and reaching quickly into the upper 70s by 2:00 today.

and here's a look at all of our high temperatures up to 82 degrees in the south bay. san francisco today, 72. feeling more like summer. we'll talk about when this wraps up. mike, you're saying a calm drive. i told you so to my kids to wear shorts. yesterday we ran home and changed. looking over here an easy drive. no change over the last ten minutes or so for the speed sensors at highway 17. looking to 101 out of the south county. an easy drive. a quick look at the bay bridge. this has changed over the last five minutes. the cash lanes are starting to stack up from nothing. we'll track that but getting to and at the bay bridge. here are your travel times. we'll send it right back to you. >> thank you very much. >> now to a developing story, a drag race turns deadly at the sonoma raceway. that driver slammed into a wall at 100 miles an hour. this was during a race last

night. >> this is a very rare crash at the popular raceway. >> reporter: it was the first night of the season that amateur drivers could come here and get out onto the track. unfortunately, it ended in tragedy when the experienced driver smashed into a wall. according to the sonoma raceway his souped up hot rod was going more than 100 miles an hour. the 75-year-old driver was the only one on the track when it happened just after 6:15, a couple hours into the event. >> this particular participant had all the proper harnesses and proper helmet and safety equipment for his class. >> reporter: it's called drags and drifts. anyone can pay a small fee, pass a safety inspection. it's a popular night that up until now had a clean safety record. >> we've been doing this for 30 years and it hasn't happened. that speaks for itself in my

mind. >> reporter: jerry sparks says the car has been in the family for years. the raceway was closed and the event ended immediately after the crash. at the sonoma raceway, sergio quintana, "today in the bay." the violent attack that leads to a manhunt that still continues on the peninsula this morning. palo alto police say the suspect grabbed a girl and pulled her to a grassy area where he sexually assaulted her while holding a gun to her head. this happened near several major tech companies at arastradero road yesterday afternoon. people nearby were alerted right away. >> the next message we got, it's right outside not just palo alto but on our doorstep. i'll keep my eyes more open for unusual things off the side of the road. >> police say the young victim is now in stable condition, and investigators are hoping to release a sketch of the suspect very soon. we'll get it to you when they do. 4:33. investigators in san francisco

are looking for a motive after a man plowed a van into a group of people. one person is dead and four others are in the hospital. this happened in san francisco's bayview district yesterday. we first brought you this story as breaking news during our midday newscast. witnesses tell us that driver first swung an ax at a group of men but was chased off. he then came back and used his van as a weapon. one witness described the horrifying stunt. >> whether the person knew that he struck the pedestrians or not, that's not in question. it's what led up to this incident which is what we're looking into. >> our cameras caught police taking one man into custody. he has been identified as mark dennis. police will not confirm if he is the driver responsible for that attack. a young woman airlifted to the hospital after the car she was driving went over a cliff. it landed on muscle rock beach in daly city yesterday. this video of the rescue. the 18-year-old driver is still

in critical condition this morning. now to new details, schools are failing public address systems is growing in hayward. we told you about the broken p.a. system in tennyson yesterday. there are four more schools with p.a. systems that don't work. school staffers are using phones along with radios to communicate. students say with threats of violence at schools, the broken system is concerning. >> if something did happen, how would kids in the restroom or walking outside be able to hear the message? >> tennyson, ochoa, longwood, south gate and glassbrook have p.a. systems that need to be replaced or fixed. a $1.7 million bid to replace tennyson's system. coming up on "today in the bay," the additional steps and changes facebook is taking to keep more of your likes and interests private. plus, kids love them in the bath, but how clean are the

headlines. wall street is set for modest gains at the opening bell this morning. the markets wavered back and forth yesterday before ending slightly lower. the nasdaq was dragged lower by big tech names, apple, netflix, amazon. amazon falling more than 4% on reports that president trump wants to go after the company because the retail giant is putting mom and pop stores out of business. the dow closing down, the nasdaq falling. facebook is taking more steps in an attempt to calm the uproar over how it handles your personal data. the social media giant will limit the information it shares with companies that collect and share consumer data to advertisers. facebook is ending a program that lets data brokers target users like the ones who buy certain products. the blog post facebook says will help improve privacy. bmw and mercedes are fierce rivals but they're now joining

right? makes almost all of his free throws. we're clearly in the mood for baseball. kari, you're in the mood for basketball. >> we have everything covered today. it's going to be a warm one. we start out this morning with 40s and 50s as you get ready to head out the door and the seven-day fact is coming up at the bottom of the screen. let's talk about our temperatures today, where we're headed, and the records we may be setting. so in santa rosa the forecast is 83 degrees but the record is 81 in napa. i think it will hit 83 today. the old record is 78 degrees. we're not supposed to be this warm. i think all across the board we may be setting records. concord, 82. the record, though, is 83. oakland, 75 today. 77. and in san jose, looks like we'll set a record there. also in mountain view. a good day to head to the beach. santa cruz will be nice. as you head over to the summit by late morning mid-60s and later on today 73 degrees at

2:00. and getting dressed this morning maybe this is the last day of school before that break ends. you're going to need the short sleeves and also the shorts. a good day, also, if you have the day off for that sun hat or sunglasses. anything to block the sun and help keep you cool today as it starts to heat up fairly quickly going into the afternoon. we still have the strong area of high pressure, and it's right overhead right now. so this will be the warmest day until that shifts to the east, and then we'll start to see a change in our wind flow that will help bring in a little bit of an ocean breeze and bring down our temperatures just in time for easter. we're going to keep it dry over the next several days as those temperatures come down. san francisco, low 70s today. low 60s for easter sunday. inland areas will be in the low 80s today. once again, the warmest day of the forecast, but it still will be pretty warm. we'll have to watch those records for tomorrow as well. the weekend, reaching into the

70s. you see those clouds by wednesday. the rain won't be far behind. and, mike, you're looking for some trouble on the roads. >> looking for trouble. very calm around the bay over here. we'll zoom to where we see a little slowing. this is not trouble, just your typical build out of 205 and 580 coming to the altamont corridor. hazards, debris or maybe a stalled vehicle. not specific. it's way out there for a lot of folks but that is important for folks through brentwood and there may be a fendfender-bende. we'll track that for any major problems. a very early commute. a light drive like over here, the east shore freeway. the lights are not on at golden gate field. that's where it would be. we're looking over here to the san mateo bridge. an easy drive to the peninsula. westbound with the taillights. the peninsula itself moves very nicely and no delays for the rails along the peninsula,

caltrain. b.a.r.t. has just under 30 trains but they're all coming on line the next half hour. back to you. it is 4:48 and we want to tell you we're following breaking news. fire crews on scene of a fire at a motel in hayward. this is american value inn on whipple road not too far from the target store off 880. people are being evacuated. we have a crew on the scene and will bring you more information as soon as we get it. 4:49. developing, jurors in florida are getting set to resume deliberations in the case against the pid owidow of the p nightclub gunman. she is accused of assisting in the mass shooting that killed 49 people. they say she lied to investigators about key facts in the case. she could face life in prison. a credit union is filing an unprecedented lawsuit against the city of san francisco. it's seeking $28 million. according to curbed sf, the san

francisco federal credit union was hammered by the rollout of taxi medallion sales. drivers were allowed to purchase medallions with credit union can backing for $250,000 each. that suit argue that is ride sharing has since made those medallions worthless and it accuses the ncaa of allowing uber and lyft to siphon their business. it's a trend across the country, teachers demanding raises. teachers with oakland unified will do the same, holding rallies at several schools. the teachers are calling for salary increases and lower class sizes. teachers across the country are fighting for salary increases. this was the scene in arizona yesterday. and this protest was inspired by teachers in west virginia who wept on strike earlier this month. they got a 5% raise. the teachers sacrifice a lot during the recession. now their work loads are growing

but not compensation. >> teachers are being asked to do more and more and yet they have fewer resources, and their salaries not only are stagnant but they're going down. >> now this is happening in other states as well. in oklahoma a strike over salaries is set for monday. coming up on "today in the bay," a new move by california lawmakers to crack down on raffles that give away firearms. finding a new car can be daunting. chris chmura says there's one very important word to understand. california law is clear about what a certified used car can't be. for example, it can't have damage, be a lemon or one they were forced to buy back. if you're at a big name dealer that has a car not certified, you would be wise to find out why. send us your consumer questions.

on this thursday right now in san rafael. you can see a few cars coming around the curve there. mike will have a look at what's going on with the traffic in your morning commute in just a minute. time now 4:55. a town hall meeting on last week's shooting that left an officer injured and a suspect dead. it happened in the outer mission neighborhood. police say they were called out to the area on reports of a man with a gun. when officers found the man there was gunfire. guns would no longer be allowed to be given away as prizes. this as part of a new state measure working its way through the state capital. the guns rights groups have anger over the measure. a firefighters group in the central valley raveled off an ar-15 in the days following the school shooting rampage. critics call the bill excessive saying it would have a negative
