5:15 am
ahead for a weekend that will be slightly cooler coming up. >> and travel times look great getting to the bay bridge and now the issue at the bay bridge, i found out what was going on. i'll explain it coming up. 5:15 right now. we are following breaking news. a reported explosion and fire at a hotel in hayward. we're learning that people have been evacuated. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live. the evacuations, are they still ongoing? >> reporter: it looks like they're letting some of the people back into america's best value inn. that's the lobby. you have the hayward fire department there talking to some of the people evacuated. now look to your left and that's the unit in question, this is the hotel room on the second floor that caught fire around 4:00 this morning. the reason why the lights are on in there the fire department is in there right now trying to figure out the cause. i just spoke with the chief of the hayward fire department, and
5:16 am
he does not believe right now there's anything suspicious but they, again, don't know what started the fire. as a result, that fire did extend up to the unit above so you have two units destroyed and the fire department had to wake up all the people to get them out. more than 30 people are evacuated and remarkably in spite of the flames you're seeing there were no injuries. everyone did get out okay. another issue which speaks to the importance of having good fire code, this is a common attic but there are fire breaks so no lateral extension outside of that one section of the hotel there were fire breaks on either side that kept it extending any more than the four un on both floors, the second and third floors. again, you have this fire that did go to a second alarm. the fire department had it put out in 30 minutes. i've talked to a couple people evacuated and most were asleep. they didn't know anything that was happening until the fire department alerted them, kicking in their door or getting them to
5:17 am
come out or out on their own. no injuries. this caused substantial to the two units. in hayward reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." and it's 5:16 on your thursday. there are two days left in financial quarters. today and tomorrow. after that go into the books as a loss on the broader markets. so we had red arrows on wednesday but they were reasonable numbers. the markets have been all over the place. triple digits up and down. this is kind of refreshing. boeing says the wanna cry virus has hit its computers. amazon plunged on talk president trump wanted to go after the company, something he's promised for a long time. >> he wants political influence so amazon will benefit from it. that's not right. and, believe me, if i become president, oh, do they have problems. >> and he became president.
5:18 am
trump just tweeted about amazon a couple minutes ago. much of the same criticism. now the root of mr. trump's dislike is less about the company, more about jeff bezos. bezos bought "the washington post," "the washington post" is critical of trump. mr. trump seems to conflate the amazon company and "the washington post." in fact, no the long ago he really liked amazon when he was selling books and ties. i found seven instances where he encouraged people to buy stuff like his book on amazon. facebook taking more steps this morning to calm the crisis of that company. it will limit the data it shares with advertisers. biting criticism of facebook coming from apple ceo tim cook. videotape from a special, the reporters asked him what he would do if he were in mark zuck zuckerberg's situation and he said i wouldn't be in mark zuckerberg's situation.
5:19 am

5:20 am
degrees. the record, 81. in napa, 83. i think it will hit that temperature today. and the record is 78 degrees. concord may be just below, but we'll have to watch that number. it will be very close. san jose may be a degree above the record high. and as we go through the morning drive in the east bay temperatures start out in the low 50s at 6:00 and then by noontime, lunch, we're at 72 degrees. a good day to take lunch outside. high pressure still with us and it's right overhead. so this will be the warmest day of the week as it keeps those storm systems away from the bay area and also causes the air to sink and warm, and we're pretty much done with this month so you may be wondering how we're doing with rain in san jose. we were just below the average amount and then as we go into the next several months you see how much our average rain tops off. we're heading into our dry period, a little bit of rain during the month of april. if you're making weekend plans to head to napa valley, it's
5:21 am
still going to be warm tomorrow. highs in the low 80s, but a beautiful weekend ahead. we'll talk about more weekend events coming up at about 5:38. and, mike, you were talking about the issue at the bay bridge. >> we cleared that out because what was going on at the beginning of our 4:30 show, i was talking about an issue that has been there, a crash can and a lane reported blocked east out of the city which has been confirmed cleared by chp. it sounds like there was a lag in the system. another report did come in but it was just repeat that ing that one. here is the incline getting in. that's a beautiful view there. we're going to show you a nice view. sensors around the bay, good stuff. we may have debris, north 101 around move fffitt field. no problem, just typical slowing out of the altamont corridor 580 right here into livermore and dublin. highway 4, no problem. pittsburg, bay point, the walnut

5:32 am
anything suspicious. two people in the room got out and the people in the unit above also got out. i spoke to a man on the third floor who was asleep and he said he was awoken and got out of bed and the hallway was filled with smoke. remarkably 32 people were evacuated, no one was hurt. as you can see in the video the fire was going pretty good. it blew out the window on that second floor unit, blew it out pretty good. and then a sense of it being the force of the pressure inside of the room and here is a witness you were talking about that we did hear from earlier. >> the fire started on the second floor and something happened, the window blew out. and landed on the truck. i looked and smoke was coming out the window. >> reporter: and there's that window that man was just
5:33 am
referring to that blew out on the second floor unit. this was a second alarm. that means that the fire department had to call for reinforcements. they did have the fire around 4:00 and had knockdown within 30 minutes. again, 32 people evacuated. no one taken to the hospital. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. happening today in sacramento, that's where family and friends will say their final farewell to stephon clark. he's the man who was shot and killed by police on march 18th. they thought he had a gun, but officers later revealed he was carrying only a cell phone. today's funeral comes after days of unrest in the city. civil rights advocates will be attending, that includes reverend al sharpton scheduled to deliver the eulogy. our pete suratos is in sacramento. he'll have a live report in our next half hour. new this morning at 5:33, a warning before you head out the door and get behind the wheel. alarming footage just released shows more of the dangerous and
5:34 am
sometimes deadly consequences of distracted driving. "today in the bay" is live in san jose with a closer look at the study. roz, this is revealing video, a good reminder before we head out to work. >> reporter: you really have to be careful not just what you're doing but the other person as you're out there driving. it's a good reminder as folks are about to leave for their morning commute to work this morning, the takeaway from the study is some of us are more distracted than of. taking a look at a video of a driver so distracted he just misses a pickup truck and has to plow onto the median or a bus driver who is so busy on his telephone that he never notices the traffic in front of him is stopped. and that's what the study found. we know what we shouldn't be doing but we do it anyway. >> actually look in your rear-view mirror and see them looking down, texting, eating. >> reach down and check your
5:35 am
device. >> reporter: now that new aaa study showed 88% of us agree that texting while driving should be banned but that 45% of us admit we do it anyway, at least reading texts while driving and more than a third of drivers surveyed admit to haven't sent a message while driving. the numbers are off dramatically, double what they were five years ago. so what to do? the advice is to put your phone somewhere you can't get to it in your glove box or put it in your back seat. and if you're going to use it for gps, program in the address you're going to before you take off because that is another distraction you just don't need. live in san jose, roz plater for "today in the bay." >> if you see someone texting next to you, change lanes and get away from them. a manhunt continues on the peninsula. palo alto police say the suspect grabbed the girl and pulled her into a grassy area and sexually
