afternoon. a look at all of our high temperatures. reaching into the low 80s and some 70s for the east bay and san francisco. the north bay, 83 degrees. now, mike, you were saying you were already starting to see the slow stretches on the roads. >> exactly what you would expect. the last couple weeks colleges and universities had their spring breaks and we're having our kids hitting spring break as well so that will continue with a lighter flow. san jose shows a little stretch there. a little bit through hayward for 880. a big story over there as well. i want to mention the toll plaza where the backup is starting to build at the berkeley curve. smooth past powell, tapping the brakes, and just as you get to the curve heading to the bay bridge toll plaza interstate 80 westbound. here is 580 out of the maze. coming off 880 as well as the maze at the east shore freeway as well. a smooth flow of traffic for the rails as well. b.a.r.t. has no more delays

6:02 am
suspicious. that fire did start in the second floor unit. take a look at this video shot by a hotel guest's cell phone video. you can see how the flames are pushing out of this building. burst up to the third floor destroying that unit as well. there was smoke extension on both floors. the fire department had to take down doors to get people to wake up and get them out of the rooms. 32 people were evacuated and remarkably no one was hurt. >> i grabbed my daughter and i ran out. i looked outside, saw the smoke, okay, let's go. >> reporter: what were you saying? >> i've never been through something like this before. my first thought was find the stairs and get out. >> reporter: what did you see when you got out? >> a lot of people running. some people were running up the stairs. i don't know where they were going. you go down. >> reporter: again, no one was hurt. everyone did get out of the fire okay. it started around 4:00 this morning. the fire department says they
6:03 am
had this knocked down within about 30 minutes. they did call for a second alarm, some backup to come help them. they had to cancel or were able to cancel a couple of the engines on that second alarm. again, the fire is out and the fire chief was telling me this hotel is offering to put some of the displaced guests up at another hotel apparently nearby. reporting live here in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. glad those folks got out safely. 6:03 now. and after days of protests and unrest in sacramento, family and friends will gather together today to say a final good-bye to the unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police in sacramento. stephon clark was killed when police mistook his phone for a gun. the reverend al sharpton is set to deliver the eulogy. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in sacramento. pete, we know that a lot of folks have had some very heightened emotions about this. what are we expecting and how
6:04 am
are we expecting sacramento to react today? >> reporter: kris, it remains to be seen what type of crowd we'll see here in front of that funeral. we're standing in front of the church where it's taking place here in sacramento. we expect a number of people to pay their respects to stephon clark. al sharpton will be speaking here which is a big deal since he is a well-known civil rights leader in america. this all launched as a result of that deadly shooting involving clark back on march 18th when he was shot and killed by sacramento police officers when he was in his grandmother's backyard. now my officers believe that clark was a suspect and was armed at the time of the shooting, but clark was only holding a cell phone the as a result of the shooting we have seen widespread demonstrations across the city of sacramento, in the streets, at city council meetings, and in front of, even, the nba -- the golden one center where the sacramento kings play their home games.
6:05 am
a wake was held for clark. our crews were there and spoke to family and friend about this latest deadly officer involved shooting that's gaining a lot of national attention. >> gunning somebody down is wrong. they could have shot him in the leg, in the arm. they could have tased him. >> it could have been your child. you should act like it's your own. >> reporter: on your television screen you see the information on today's funeral services for stephon clark. it will take place at the boss church in sacramento. the service is set to begin roughly at about 11:00 a.m. and lasting until 1:00 p.m. we know other civil rights advocates will be here as well as we mentioned al sharpton who is expected to speak around 12:00 p.m. we expect to hear from a number

6:09 am
home plate as possible, pull out my score book and have that experience. the younger generation, i don't want that experience. i want to move around, to have several different experiences within my trip to the ballpark. >> and have even more fun. the team unveiled a new version of the so-called impossible burger right there. it's called impossible french onion slider. it tastes like a real burger but contains no meat and it's all plant based. bob redell took a bite. >> why does he always get that assignment? i don't get that one. live to at&t park. even though it is opening day expect the seagulls to outnumber the fans there. that is because the giants open at dodger stadium. there are some lingering questions about whether dodger stadium will be open today because of the puddle you see there on the field. health inspectors have to clear repairs on a sewage spill that force add game to be canceled tuesday. the team insists the problem is fixed but we will find out for sure later this morning.

we'll show you the bigger view coming up. a very happy thursday to you. there are two days left in the financial quarter. unless something amazing happens, q-1 will go on the books as a loss. boei boeing, and amazon losses. it's the president who is pulling the stock down. about an hour ago president trump tweeted, i have stated my concerns with amazon long before the election. unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state and local governments and use our postal system as their delivery boy causing tremendous loss to u.s. and putting thousands of retailers out of business. mr. trump was indeed critical of amazon before the election. he's been pretty straight forward for his dislike for jeff
6:17 am
bezos who also owns "the washington post," and "the washington post" is critical of president trump. here is donald trump back when he was a candidate. >> every hour we're getting calls from reporters from "the washington post" asking ridiculous questions, and i will tell you, this is jeff bezos who owns amazon. he's using "the washington post" for power so that the politicians in washington don't tax amazon like they should be taxed. he wants political influence so amazon will benefit from it. that's not right and, believe me, if i become president, oh, do they have problems. >> and he became president. now donald trump has not always been critical of amazon. when he was selling stuff on amazon, he promoted it, books and ties. a tweet where he gives you a direct link to buy his book on amazon. no reason to stop at the local bookstore.
6:18 am
i found seven instances he encouraged people to buy stuff on amazon. facebook is making more steps -- or taking more steps to calm the crisis at that company. it will limit the data it shares with advertisers and, meanwhile, biting criticism of facebook coming from apple's tim cook. this is videotape of an upcoming msnbc special that will run april 6th, a week from friday. the reporters asked him what he would do if he were in mark zuckerberg's situation, and tim cook says, i would never be in mark zuckerberg's situation. which is a pretty biting comment. apple refused to open an iphone in the san bernardino situation. they're taking privacy seriously. they've slipped up a couple of times but take it seriously. >> he doesn't usually say things like that. >> he does not say things like that which makes it all the more biting. >> thank you very much. we do have continuing coverage now, fremont school board discussion on sexual
6:19 am
education is finally over, but would you believe it only ended at 2:30 this morning. it did start with protests outside the meeting. inside supporters say it is important for teachers to focus on sexually transmitted diseases and hiv. critics say it's just too detailed and graphic for some of the younger kids. hundreds of people spoke inside and outside. we talk with this critic. >> assume all the kids have the same needs. >> classes are expected to start for fourth graders through eighth graders. new this morning a speed skater who won two gold medals at the olympics in south korea is now the fastest man on ice. he hit 57 miles per hour on a course in sweden. the car in front of him is pulling a funnel shaped screen to cut out the wind resistance.
6:20 am
the skater says when he hit 55 miles an hour he started to lose control of his skates. the record on an olympic skating course is about 33 miles per hour. >> i totally could have done it with the windscreen. that's an unfair advantage. >> that's what's been holding you back. >> the only thing. i probably skate like 1 mile an hour. >> wobble. >> it's a distant memory considering we are going to have some really warm weather over the next several days and it's going to be near record highs. i'm watching those numbers for you looking at our forecast for today and what the record is. so let's get a look at santa rosa, napa reaching 83 degrees, well above the records today especially in napa and i'll be watching the numbers in concord because it's going to be really close. i'm forecasting 82 in concord. the record is 83. also very close in oakland. 75 for the forecast. in san jose we'll be above the
6:21 am
record high and also in mountain view. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. it will cool off in time for the week. the morning drive in the east bay, some mid-50s to start and then you see how fast the temperatures jump up into the 70s, even some mid-70s for early afternoon. a good day to take your lunch outside or head to the beach. half moon bay will be really nice. the upper 60s and low 70s getting that high temperature at about 1:00 and then cooling down once we see an ocean breeze. we still have this large area of high pressure. that's what's kept it dry and also very warm. as it centers over parts of the region, that will cause that air to sink and warm up and that's the reason we do have some very summerlike temperatures. it's easter weekend where we have a lot going on around the bay area. still all dry. if you're going to sausalito for the easter egg hunt and parade it will reach into the upper 60s by early afternoon but it will be cool to start.
6:22 am
so make sure the kids have something nice and warm to wear. we'll talk about the weekend in about 20 minutes. it will be cooling off and staying dry the next several days. mike has a reminder there are two sides to an issue. that's right. traffic with a jam and benefit. we'll see the altamont pass. the rest of the bay moving nicely. a benefit from the crash. the crash itself not benefiting the two vehicles involved, the big rig and a pickup truck. now that's causing a distraction and a backup. heavier out of the altamont, 205 and 580 all the way. a live look from our camera in dublin and it's much lighter just about 15 minutes ago. an easy drive here. good spacing between the cars over to the dublin interchange. here the san mateo bridge not such good spacing but at least it's moving westbound. continuing to build to the

6:31 am
going on weatherwise. you say a nice, bright, sunny day. we are excited about the home opener for the oakland a's. it will be perfect out there, a lot of sunshine and starting out with upper 60s and low 70s reaching up to 74 degrees. make sure you can find some shade and also a lot of events around the bay area. the easter egg hunt is happening on saturday. we're going to talk about a lot of events for the weekend or some places you may be heading coming up in about seven minutes. mike, you are saying now there's a crash on the east shore freeway. >> i don't see it on the chp report but do see it on our live camera. approaching the berkeley curve just past powell and so it may affect those entering the freeway. it's right over on the shoulder to your right. heading to the bay bridge but still despite that crash a pretty mild build, only 22 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza where, of course, we have the backup there. the rest of the bay moves

"today in the bay's" roz slater has been going through that report with the reason you might want to lock that cell phone in
6:33 am
the glove box or maybe even in the back seat, roz. >> reporter: indeed that is what they say you should do. i think the takeaway is more of us are on these phones talking or texting, and we're more distracted than ever. in fact, they're saying the risks may be greater than that from aggressive driving and from drunk driving, if you can believe that. take a look at the video of a guy so distracted that he narrowly miss as pickup truck and has to plow onto the median or this bus driver so busy on his phone he never notices the traffic in front of him stopped. that's what the study found. we know what we shouldn't be doing but we do it anyway. >> you can look from your car in the rear-view mirror and see them looking down. they're probably texting, eating, only god knows. >> there's always an urge to reach down and check your device. >> reporter: now that new aaa study shows that 83% of us agree
6:34 am
texting while driving should be banned but that 45% of us admits we're doing it, even reading text messages while driving, and more than a third of drivers surveyed admit to having sent a tex message while driving. the numbers are up drastically, double what they were five years ago. again, make sure you put that phone where you can't get to it. and if you're using your phone for gps, punch in your destination before you get going. that, too, is another way we get distracted with the phones while driving. live in san jose, roz plater for "today in the bay." >> we're used to grabbing it as soon as it chimes. a violent attack leads to a manhunt that continues on the peninsula. palo alto police say the suspect grabbed a girl, pulled her into a grassy area and sexually assaulted her while holding a gun to her head. this happened near several major tech companies at the arastradero and deer creek roads

where the a's are getting ready to host division rival angels for opening day. first pitch is at 1:05 this afternoon. the team is trying to keep its roots in oakland and as we reported earlier this week the a's offered to buy the coliseum site from the city and county by paying off more than $135 million of debt owed on that site. this morning we are learning that the a's will also offer to buy the howard terminal site. yesterday that plan got a big boost from mayor libby schaaf who backed the team's bid to buy either site for that new ballpark. the a's hope to build the new park near lake merritt but the college board put a stop to that plan. so once again the a's home opener is today at 1:00 this afternoon. traffic will be extra heavy because the game will end at 4:00, but the warriors are playing the milwaukee bucks at oracle starting at 7:30, so fans are expected to arrive early.

6:40 am
the weekend. >> we like to call today friday eve, but for some people this is pretty much friday because they're off tomorrow for good friday. it's going to be a great week. we'll have temperatures ranging from 64 degrees on saturday for the coast up to 75 degrees for the inland areas. on sunday easter will be slightly cooler but still really nice for all the egg hunts or whatever you're planning to do. let's make some plans and get outside. the tall ships tour in antioch on saturday and it will be at about 61 degrees and mostly sunny. kids may need a light jacket but then taking it off as it warms up into the early afternoon and then on sunday in san francisco there will be a parade, a spring celebration, events and things to do with the kids. now the parade starts at 2:00. so right at that time we'll be at 65 degrees. mostly sunny and breezy throughout the day. and for russian river valley it's going to be really nice there reaching into the mid-70s for tomorrow and saturday. slightly cooler on sunday.
