"today in the bay" continues right now. it is 6:00 on the dot. thanks for joining us on this friday morning, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> when you say it sounds so good, friday. >> friday. i'm marcus washington. >> you can say it anyway. it's still friday. >> and great weather comes along with friday. >> yes, it does. we will start out with a cool morning and as you head out the door you're starting to see the sunrise and it's mostly in the 40s and 50s around the bay area. look at that, one of the warmer spots now in san jose and it's really cool in the north bay. santa rosa 46 degrees, 56 as you head out the door in san francisco. wanted to show you the seven-day forecast because it stays dry throughout your easter weekend but it also cools off several degrees. san francisco up to 66 degrees on sunday and 75 degrees inland. look at the end of the forecast, there is some rain in there. so we will talk about that.

mike, surprise at the bay bridge. >> sometimes an unpleasant surprise. let me tell you which one in just a second. easy pleasant speed sensors reads out of the altamonte pass. a little slowing in san jose. the south county we have an at speed drive gilroy through san martin and morgan hill. highway 17 at speed as well. the bay bridge the yay bridge. i'm going to do a freeze frame and treat that out as well. an easy friday drive with no metering lights on and no backup at the toll plaza. the north bay shows a good amount of traffic through san rafael but at speed novato down to the golden gate bridge. >> i will take it from here. we start with breaking news for you this morning. overnight russia released video of what the country says is a new missile test. this comes amid escalating feud that has 60 american diplomats headed open. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill with those new details from overnight.

tracie, the release of this video has a lot of people wondering what's next. exactly. for not only the united states but more than two dozen nations worldwide who are having their diplomats kicked out of russia. it was that video that caught attention just a few hours ago early this morning russia flexing its military muscle. this is new video unconfirmed by nbc of what russia says is a successful missile test. an icbm just days after president vladimir putin's tough talk claiming he has invincible weapons. and a phone call with president trump, stoking fears about another cold war. now multiple officials tell nbc president trump wants aides to keep quiet about new policies against russia. >> if he somehow, you know, speaks negative about putin or is really aggressive in what he says publicly then that will anger putin.

>> reporter: this after russia kicked out 60 american diplomats, forced to leave russia by thursday. the u.s. consulate in st. petersburg our oldest mission there is being shut down tomorrow. >> if anybody slaps your cheek, your face, what will be the reaction from your side? >> reporter: it's russia's response to the u.s. kicking out 60 of their diplomats and closing russia's consulate in seattle. >> we reserve the right further to any russian retaliation against the united states. >> reporter: the expulsions are punishment. the u.s. blames russia for poisoning a spy and his daughter in great britain. russia denies it. escalating tensions between the world's two super powers in the middle of washington's russia investigation. and speaking of that investigation, there have been allegations that the fbi is politically biased but turns out the attorney general is not going to appoint a second

"today in the bay's" pete suratos is live outside oracle arena with who the team is asking to take part in that protest for stephon clark's death. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. you mentioned there matt barnes played a number of games behind me here at oracle arena and he's calling on some of his wormer warriors teammates to join him in a rally regarding the stephon clark incident that's made a ton of national headlines over the past couple weeks. let's show you the tweet that he sent out, you see there that it's a rally in sacramento

before the warriors and kings play their game there tomorrow night. they will be in sacramento at cesar chavez park at about 12:00 p.m. and the purpose of that rally is to call for more accountability when it comes to the deadly officer-involved shooting of stephon clark. that will take place well before the evening tip-off time at 6:00 p.m. at the golden 1 center in sacramento. in an interview with "usa today" barnes who was at yesterday's funeral called on his former teammates from both the warriors and the sacramento kings who he played for as well and he wants them to join him at that rally tomorrow. i want to point out he was a veteran leader on both teams so we will see how his former teammates if they follow his lead on saturday. here he is after yesterday's funeral talking about the impact of the shooting on his personal life. >> i'm a father of two african-american boys, i walked these streets growing up and, you know, just tired of seeing this on the news. when it happened in my hometown it's something i have to -- you know, i have a platform to speak

up on. >> reporter: stephon clark was shot and killed by sacramento police officers on march 18th. those officers believed at the time that he was a burglary suspect and that he was armed when that shooting took place, but investigators only found a cellphone near clark at the time of that shooting. now, this is all under investigation by sacramento police. sacramento's -- the sacramento da's office as well as california's attorney general. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." thank you, pete. happening today, south bay immigrant rights supporters are organizing a march and rally in san jose. they plan to voice their opposition to recent actions by i.c.e. and white house efforts to end the daca program. organizers are asking people to gather at 3:00 p.m. outside of san jose city hall. the group plans to march to nearby plaza de cesar chavez. the contra costa sheriff's office is reportedly under fire from immigrant rights groups accusing it of tipping off authorities about inmate release

dates. critics say that information is being picked up by i.c.e. and it's sort of a work around of the california state sanctuary laws. the sheriff's office not commenting. happening today at 6:08. preparing for fire season. today marin county officials will hold a community forum and this comes after last year's relentless and deadly fire season in the north bay. today's forum will focus on evacuations. it starts at 10:00 this morning at the tamalpais community center and is open to the public. water and climate change experts will join peninsula leaders in discussing challenges being brought on by drought and rising sea waters. they are hosting the summit in he had redwood city. it includes efforts that are under way to protect and preserve peninsula water resources. that summit is at canada college in redwood city.

as we approach 6:09 as the sunrises we can see a little of that happening right now. we will have clouds and quickly warming temperatures. we will be back in the low 80s for those inland areas and maybe setting new records for this afternoon. santa rosa the forecast is 82 degrees, the record is 85, so we will be very close and napa 78 today with a record of 82. look at concord, we may tie the old record and in oakland we will be very close, san jose may go above today's record high temperature going up to 84 degrees today and mountain view may tie the record as well. we will continue to watch these numbers. the pollen count is still going to be high, a lot of trees and grass is blooming after last week's rain and this week's warmth and sunshine. mike says it's all green on the grid. >> not on your grid, the one you just showed with the allergy stuff, but on the travel time grid i have approaching the bay bridge you are at speed and in fact the bay bridge has no metering lights.

this is the last day we will have temperatures like this for a while. it cools off for the weekend. we have some rain down the road. we will talk about that coming up in less than five minutes. we are looking at travel times for the north bay, the only number that's changed is highway 37. a little slowing over in mare island westbound as you expect for whatever light commute you have. the san mateo bridge westbound moves pretty much at speed, a little slowing at the high-rise as we approach on that westbound direction. new this morning, all the recent concerns about facebook data being compromised has a lot of folks wondering how other tech giants gather and protect our information. the "today" show's gadi schwartz wanted to find out so he looked into google's data collection and how much they guard the data they select. one cyber security expert says google has 9 gigs of information about him including extensive shopping and travel details.

slight risk to people on the ground since most of the bus-sized vehicle is expected to burn up on re-entry, but maybe use an umbrella. i don't know. from space to earth how about from southern california to mars. in just more than a month scientists in pasadena will be at the controls of a new mission to mars. the mars insight mission will travel 140 million miles to study the mysteries red planet as they never have before. among the many experiments drilling past the topsoil, studying mars earthquakes and finding out how hot it really does get on the red planet. for the first time the mission will launch from southern california. >> we've seen just a few seconds from liftoff people that are outside just looking to the sky should be able to see it. >> liftoff is set for may 5th from vandenberg air force base. we will follow that for you. continuing coverage for you now, a cup of coffee in

california will soon come with a cancer warning. a superior court judge in lamt has ruled in support of a law that claims a chemical compound made during coffee roasting process can cause cancer. the coffee industry has said the chemical is present at harmless levels but doctors disagree. >> we don't know if there is a safe level of ak rcrylamide. moderation is the key and with coffee two to four cups seems to be a fairly safe dose for most people. >> the coffee industry argues because the chemical is a result of naturally roasting coffee beans they should be exempt from that law. as you enjoy your coffee this morning -- >> awkward. awkward. >> okay. i usually -- okay, i usually have about one, maybe two cups a day, so i think i'm pretty good. i love my coffee, i'm not giving it up base odden that.

>> i will take the acrylamide. >> we are going to have a day where you will go from hot coffee to iced coffee later today. 84 degrees in the south bay will be our high as we take a look at that live camera in the middle of the screen looking live from palo alto. our high temperature there will be up to 79 degrees. the tri-valley 85 today, it will feel more like summer and also in the north bay as we reach up to 81. 72 a nice temperature in san francisco and the san francisco seven-day forecast is now coming up at the bottom of the screen. let's go to the north bay and go hiking, those trails will have some beautiful weather and all dry. 71 degrees at noontime, 75 degrees at 1:00 and reaching into the upper 70s today with a light wind. make sure you pack an extra bottle of water. i wanted to show you the larger view of what's happening on the satellite with some clouds starting to move in and we will see those clouds mixing in

throughout the weekend but they won't bring any rain. then the next storm system will be here by the end of next week and that one will bring us some rain. i wanted to show you how we're doing with the sierra snow pack. temperatures have been very warm and all of the progress we made during the month of march with the extreme amounts of snow brought our snow pack up to about 65% but right now with some of this melting we are in the central sierra at 64% of normal. so we didn't have a miracle march, but we did make some pretty good progress there. if you are going there to heavenly this weekend temperatures will be in the upper 50s and low 60s. low 70s for san francisco, it does cool off over the next few days for easter sunday. a lot of big easter egg events and hunts going on as well as the parade. it will be up to 66 degrees and all clear to start out next week. notice toward the end of the forecast we will start to see some rain moving in and temperatures cooling off quite a bit. so from 83 to 67 by the end of

next week. mike sees a little bit of slowing out there on the roads. a little bit. about that much right here. we're having the convergence, this is good friday, we also have passover, a lot of folks taking today off, spring break for some colleges and some schools and continuing through next week. we just have a lot of folks finding a reason not to commute in the morning today. over here a little bit of slowing west 37 out of vallejo and a little across the westbound bay bridge but not even enough traffic there to turn on the metering lights. no metering lights at the bay bridge right now. we're looking at the smooth drives, a tinny bit of slowing west 580 out of the altamonte. we have a crash up 87 there quad lup parkway just at 101. on the shoulder. 101 moves at speed, gilroy through morgan hill, santa cruz summit moves nicely for 17. here is 101 through palo alto northbound, there is a bright sign we always know there at university and ikea. northbound with those head lights up in toward san

payment ap 6:24 for you right now. new this morning a warning to people who use payment apps. apparently it's becoming a feeding ground for swammers. apps like san jose based venmo and cash app allow you to send money using an e-mail or phone number. it's secure but that doesn't mean that it's immune to scammers. experts say the most common problem is when people use the app to buy and sell items from websites like craigslist or facebook marketplace. >> when you start to use this app and this payment method with people you don't know you are opening up a whole another avenue that this wasn't designed for. >> another common complaint is from consumers using these apps to buy tickets. that ends up being fake. 6:24 now and nbc bay area

distance making for a beautiful sunrise, but no rain in the forecast and the warming trend, well, we will have to talk to kari about that one. thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now we want to head over to meteorologist kari hall to get us a better look at this beautiful forecast for this friday. >> i think everyone has been enjoying it except for if you have to be inside. it gets a little bit toasty if you don't have air conditioning. we start out with cool weather this morning, nice beautiful sunrise. i wanted to show you the temperature trend for today and when it starts to heat up. by 11:00 we are already at 70 degrees and 81 degrees by 2:00 today. those are the times you will try to find some air conditioning as we head up to 84 degrees, 85 for livermore and 78 degrees today in napa. we will take a look ahead to the weekend in seven minutes. mike, you are tracking a new crash in san jose. >> one of the few crashes we have had all morning. look at the slowing on our san

jose camera which was flowing smoothly until a few minutes ago. northbound 101 jams up at 280, 680 it happened to quickly that the sensors are just now starting to show the slowdown here. this is where the camera is north of that 60 interchange. reports of the crash between that camera and oakland road. i have marked them back down there, it involves a motorcycle. we are all concerned for the driver and everybody else involved. motorcycle tend to see more severe injuries. we will check on that once chp arrives. that's the only section we see slowing again. watch that north 101 right around oakland road on the approach off of mckee. the rest of the flow of traffic shows a nice green sensor. look at the bay bridge. the bay bridge has no backup, no metering lights, haven't seen it all morning. we are hoping this stays as long as it can. toward the middle of the day that happens approach the weekend. the dublin interchange traffic

flows smoothly. a woman is hurt in a violent encounter it seems while driving she was hit by a rock. >> bob redell is live at san jose police headquarters. this doesn't sound like it was just an accident. >> reporter: no, definitely intentional. that's what san jose police have indicated by arresting this man who threw a rock at this woman who we believe works at the valley transportation authority. as you can see in this video from overnight officers escorted this woman away from the scene to an ambulance as she kept pressure on her head wound. take a look at the rock that this man threw at her. it looks like a large river rock, the kind that's used in landscaping. what you can't see in the radio are the droplets of blood on the ground around it. you can see officers leading him away from the scene in handcuffs. this happened around 9:30 on second and julian in san jose. the woman who we were was a vta

supervisor was driving when the man threw at rock at her van. when she got out to look for damage he threw another rock and hit her in the head. the suspect did try to run away but police did catch him. it's not clear what led up to the attack or what the motive may have been. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we will keep following this one. an intense in you video this morning from san francisco police body cameras showing the chaotic moments when gunshots were exchanged inside a busy amazon barber shop last week. police reblessed that video at an emotional community meeting, you can see people reacting right there. they say when officers walked in jehad eid pulled his gun and fired nine shots, the officers fired 26 shots killing that suspect.

five other people were shot including one officer who survived. a barber -- the barber was shot in the hip and he said that there were kids in the back room when those bullets started flying. he believes police should have handled that situation differently. >> do we think it should be handled different? yeah, we do. we do think it could have been handled a lot different. but the fact is that it wasn't. do you know what i'm saying? i forgave jehad. >> at that same meeting some of eid's family members apologized, others said they were angry with how police responded. a follow-up now, students and teachers in one north bay school district will reportedly receive new mandatory training in the wake of recent sexual harassment claims. teachers in tamalpais union high school district went public with claims of harassment made by male students. the ij reports new comprehensive training will begin at all five district schools next month. now to a story you will only

see on nbc bay area a late night fast food run took a frightening and violent turn for young women. san jose police are looking for a man who chased after a car load of young women and then fired shots at them. one of the passengers was hit. it started around 2:00 in the morning on wednesday at a jack in the box restaurant on monterey road in san jose. that is a gunshot -- a gun bullet hole in one of the cars. the victim who did not want to be identified says she was driving her white toyota when it all went down. >> he got in the drive-thru, i got behind him, you know, nothing -- no words were exchanged, nothing, just ordering food. >> her friend was shot in the arm, but is expected to be okay. we have asked san jose police for a description of the suspect, but they haven't released one yet. 6:35. continuing coverage now more trouble for former football star aldon smith. he did not appear for his scheduled court appearance yesterday. a judge has issued a bench warrant for smith's arrest but won't implement that until april

5th because lawyers did appear on his behalf. smith is now scheduled to be back in court on that date. the former 49ers and raiders linebacker was arrested last week after violating a court order to stay away from his fiancé. >> i think he fore gits i. fits that bond money, too. a tribute for ed lee who died suddenly last year. the golden state warriors will dedicate a new basketball court in chinatown. it will be the edwin m. lee court and will open at the sal skrags army community center on powell streed near the broadway tunnel. mayor lee died suddenly from a heart attack in december. as new true san franciscan will tell you vermont street is the crookedest street in the city. >> some say it doesn't get any better than this. they hold the bring your own big wheel race on vermont at 20th street and potrero hill. the event starts at 3:00 for the

kids and the big kids, the grown-ups get started at 4:00. it does look like fun. do wear a helmet if you're headed out there. it looks pretty steep. >> spoken like a mom. >> right. today we are looking over here and you showed big wheels and that was for fun but we have a motorcycle and this is not fun, a crash reported for that motorcycle a fully dressed motorcycle a larger bike and that's northbound 101 jamming traffic up at least from our camera at 680/280 approaching oakland road. i've marked two locations. there's oakland road here is mckee. all the slowing shows up around mckee but chp says it's farther north. if you get on the freeway north of 880 you are fine but approaching the area your left two lanes are blocked and that's what's causing the jam right there. traffic so light north downed 280 is a great alternate to get over to 87. today you notice how light the traffic is around the bay and so that is a convenient option for you. as we get a look out there a live look shows you also the

golden gate bridge this is pretty much what the rest of the freeways including the bay bridge are like. this golden gate bridge going to get crowded today and all through the weekend because, again, spring breaks and holidays this weekend, we will have a lot of tourists i think in town. > >> it will be a nice weekend to take another walk across the golden gate bridge or maybe a bike ride. it's going to be great for all of the events going on and if you're going to the coast it will be a little cooler, 64 degrees, the bay at 70 degrees and 75 degrees inland. let's check out sunday's forecast because i know you have plans to do egg hunts, going to the parades. it's going to be at 63 degrees for the coast, 70 for the bay and 73 degrees for the inland valleys. this is a cool event going on in antioch, you have those tall ships that were used in movies that will be docked there at the marina. this happens tomorrow starting

at 10:00 in the morning and it will be cool as you head out there to start, low 60s but does warm up quickly. if you hang out around antioch throughout the day it will be in the mid 70s. on sunday, we were talk about this event for the easter egg hunt, the parade that starts at 2:00 in the afternoon. it will be at 60 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds but overall really nice. then something different you may want to try out going for a walk and checking out the wild flours in mt. diablo. it will be in the mid 40s to start, very cool temperatures sunday morning and then reaching into the low 60s as the day goes along. santa cruz will have the best beach day on today, actually, 76 degrees, upper 60s for the rest of the weekend. a nice weekend also to go for a hike in muir woods. it will be up to 70 degrees for this afternoon, low 60s tomorrow and a mix of sun and clouds on sunday, 65 degrees. let me know what you're doing this weekend. i'm at kari hall weather on

overnight. up to 20 people are now without a place to stay after flames erupted at an apartment complex in san mateo. firefighters say the three alarm fire started around 10:00 on north delaware street. they were able to stop that fire from spreading though several units are damaged by smoke and heat. no one was hurt. chevron says there's no cause for concern after people in richmond heard a really loud noise coming from the refinery. it happened last night around 11:00 and the company says that that noise was the result of steam pressure release. there has been a lot of concern recently because of flaring and other problems at bay area refineries. police say since there was no risk a shelter in place was never ordered. fremont police now confirm no one was inside a car that rescue workers pulled from a pond last night. that's all happened next to the park between mission boulevard
