"early today" starts now. good morning, i'm phillip mena. >> i'm richard lui in for frances. this morning we're going to start with the daca deal that is d.o.a. president trump spent his easter sunday blasting his political opponents for the country's immigration woes, hinting democrats for inaction on the daca program currently protecting the nation's 800,000 dreamers from deportation. while simultaneously targeting mexico for what mr. trump referred to as dangerous caravans of undocumented immigrants streaming into the country. >> it seems the president's agitation over the nation's immigration system is reaching a fever pitch as he effectively ends negotiations over the crucial program shielding hundreds of thousands from deportation. for more on this we go to nbc's kelly o'donnell with the latest from mar-a-lago. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

the u.s. continuously since 2007. the future is uncertain for the 800,000 enrolled as the president and congress fail to make their legal status permanent. >> i say this to daca recipients, that the republicans are with you. they want to get your situation taken care of. >> reporter: but that sympathetic tone was gone as the president declared, no more daca deal. >> the president has dangled daca in a very cruel sense. i don't believe he's ever serious about resolving it. >> reporter: in a series of tweets, the president also described eroding security at the southern border, getting more dangerous, caravans coming. that word, caravan, was used on screen during a fox news segment. outside the church, the president again target. >> mexico has got to help us at the border. if they're not going to help us at the border, it's a very sad thing between two countries.

>> reporter: u.s./mexico relations are frayed over the border wall and renewed talks to renegotiate the nafta trade deal and all of this will be front and center again in just two weeks when president trump and mexico's president both attend the summit of the americas in lima, peru, and their conflict will come face to face. philip? >> all right, kelly, thank you. >> could another cabinet shake up be in the works? that's a question this weekend which saw some pressure increase on epa chief scott pruitt over another brewing scandal. this time involving pruitt's washington living situation. after report from the associated press revealing pruitt had spent six months renting a room in a capitol hill condo that was co-owned by the wife of a top energy lobbyist for just $50 a night. ethics watch dogs are now calling foul saying pruitt's arranged living situation is a conflict of interest here. it is just one in a series of controversies that have plagued pruitt since he went to washington. now even his fellow republicans

missing. nbc's matt bradley has the latest. >> there is an overturned vehicle 1124, unknown if it's just occurred -- >> reporter: fresh clues feeding new suspicions about the deaths and disappearance of a washington state family last week. california highway patrol now says the family's suv may have intentionally been driven off a northern california cliff, possibly speeding at 90 miles an hour. >> no signs of anybody around. no signs of anybody at all. >> reporter: officers recovered the bodies of jennifer and sarah harte and three of their six adopted children. they believe three other children were also in the car, but remain missing. >> this is a very confusing scene because there were no skid marks, there were no brake marks. >> reporter: police searched the family home on wednesday. investigators retrieved computers, credit cards and bank stamgts hunting for clues. it's not the first time the harte family has been in the news. in 2014 one of their sons devontae harte was famously photographed hugging a police

now to a mystery off the coast of japan. so-called ghost ships have been washing ashore dozens in the past year alone. nbc's janice mackie frayer explains the bizarre phenomenon. >> reporter: the boast washed ashore eerily bearing clues it had come from north korea. among the tangled fishing nets, a message in korean, urging hard work today to enjoy tomorrow. more than 100 of these ghost ships have made it to japan this past year. it's insanity, he says, if we use those boats, we wouldn't go three miles from here. but these ghost ships have traveled a stunning 650 miles across fierce currents. for him, it wasn't the wreckage
