"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm phillip mena. >> i'm richard lui in for frances this day. the daca deal is doa. president trump spent his easter sunday blasting political opponents for the country's immigration woes, hitting democrats for congressional inaction on the daca program currently protecting the nation's 800,000 dreamers from deportation. while simultaneously targeting mexico for what mr. trump referred to as dangerous caravans are undocumented immigrants streaming into the country. >> it is reaching a fever pitch as he effectively ends negotiations over the crucial program shielding hundreds of thousands from deportation. for more we go to kelly o'donnell with the latest from mar-a-lago. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, phillip. the spirit of the easter holiday

2007. the future is uncertain for the 800,000 enrolled as the president and congress fail to make their legal status permanent. >> i say this to daca recipients, that the republicans are with you, they want to get your situation taken care of. >> reporter: but that sympathetic tone was gone as the president declared no more daca deal. >> the president has dangled daca in a very cruel sense. i don't believe he's ever serious about resolving it. >> reporter: in a series of tweets, the president also described eroding security at the southern border, getting more dangerous, caravans coming. that word caravan was used on screen during a fox news segment, outside the church, the president again made mexico his target. >> mexico has got to help us at the border. if they're not going to help us at the border, it's a very sad thing between the two countries. >> reporter: u.s./mexico relations are frayed over the

border wall and renewed talks to renegotiate the nafta trade deal and all of this will be front and center again in just two weeks, when president trump and mexico's president both attend the summit of the americas in lima, peru, and their conflict will come face to face. phillip? >> should be a fascinating meeting, kelly, thank you. new developments in the california suv crash that killed a family of eight. authorities say the crash may have been intentional. police say it appears that vehicle came to a if you stop, then accelerated off a cliff. everyone on board killed, including six children. the crash remains under investigation with some of the children still missing. here's matt bradley with the latest. >> reporte >> there's an overturned vehicle, 11:24, unknown if it's just occurred or just been there. >> reporter: fresh clues feeding new suspicions about the disappearance of a washington state family last week. california highway patrol now says the family's suv may have intentionally been driven off a northern california cliff,

possibly speeding at 90 miles per hour. >> no signs of anybody around. no signs of anybody at all. >> reporter: officers recovered the bodies of jennifer and sarah hart and three of their six adopted children. they believe three other children were also in the car but remain missing. >> very confusing scene because there was no skid marks, there were no brake marks. >> reporter: police searched the family home thursday. nbc news has learned investigators retrieved computers, credit cards, and bank statements, hunting for clues. it's not the first time the hart family has been in the news. in 2014, one of their sons, was famously photographed hugging a police officer during a portland rally. neighbors say the hart children recently had been sneaking to their home asking for food. >> they portray this happy little family, and yet the night before, their daughter's telling us, please, please, please, begging us not to make her go back. that they were abusing her. >> reporter: last month washington state officials tried to reach the family amid allegations of child abuse or

neglect. family friends insist the couple was loving. >> jen and sarah were the most loving two moms that we could have ever seen on this earth, caring for six beautiful adopted children. >> reporter: a complicated legacy that remains a mystery. matt bradley, nbc news. tens of thousands of teachers in oklahoma will leave the classroom and take to the streets today joining a force of educators nationwide demanding better pay. schools across the state will be closed with as many as 30,000 teachers expected to rally at the state capitol. this just days after the state legislature passed a bill giving teachers a slight pay raise. but teachers say that's not enough. nbc's maya rodriguez with more from oklahoma city. >> reporter: did the easter bunny come? >> yeah. >> reporter: for third grade teacher heather cody, this past spring break got a nickname, spring broke. >> it's paycheck to paycheck literal

literally. >> reporter: she's one of thousands of teachers planning to walk off the job following in the footsteps of those in west virginia, kentucky, and arizona. >> underpaid! >> you don't feel respected as an educator. >> pay our teachers. >> reporter: some parents and students backing the teachers' plan to walk out. >> my kids' teacher deserves respect, and they're not getting it. >> reporter: according to the national education association, oklahoma teachers are some of the lowest paid in the nation. last week the state legislature approved a raise for the first time in ten years. on average, giving teachers about $6,000 more a year. >> that is a remarkable, historic figure for our state. something i think we should all be very proud of. >> reporter: not good enough, say educators who want a $10,000 pay raise over three years and several hundred million more to replace outdated textbooks, broken chairs and desks, bring back foreign language and arts classes, and end four-day school weeks. the result of budget cuts in some districts. >> while this is major progress, this investment alone will not

new this morning, an old chinese space station hurling toward earth is no more. u.s. military officials say the "tiangong-1" reentered the atmosphere last night, mostly burning up over the south pacific. some debris from that 18,000-pound spacecraft was found in the ocean between california and hawaii. fortunately it was too far from land to pose any risk to people, just as scientists hoped.

leukemia in 2014 transplant that helped prolong his life. his family said he died in his sleep sunday with relatives close by. he was 74. >> big loss there. on the night the vegas golden knights clinched the nhl's pacific division title the team honored the victims from the shooting in october. they retired number 58 and raised a banner with the names of those 58 people that were killed in the mass shooting on the vegas strip, with the words "vegas strong" clearly on top. this is the golden knights' inaugural year in the nhl. they now move on to the playoffs. well done. after almost three weeks of voting, it comes down to this match-up. we are not talking about villanova and michigan. we're talking about the dq blizzard and mcdonald fries head to head in a munchie madness championship and if you have a preference, go to our facebook, twitter, instagram and vote for this year's champion.
