>> today in the bay's jean elle has more on what led up to the crash. >> i didn't want to leave him, but unfortunately he died in my hands. >> reporter: he doesn't want to show his face. he and his friends came to remember his partner of ten years. the medical examiner identifies him as elesio lopez. a man drove his van into him and four other men last week. he and his partner had been fishing in the bay. perez died in his arms. >> he was just lying down right here with his face all swollen and i was crying, i was devastated. his fingers, they were purple. >> reporter: valentin said he saw the suspect drive his van

down the sidewalk. he said he first tried to attack him and his friends with a hatchet. >> translator: he followed us calling us mexican names, got into his truck, made a u-turn, got up to the sidewalk, and just hit all of them. when he turned around to scream to the rest of the guys, it was too late. >> reporter: now a community is saying good-bye to a man they say was gentle and kind. another man is in critical condition. dennis is facing a long list of charges including murder. jean elle, "today in the bay." we have a search for three children who are presumed dead after a tragic crash along the mendocino coastline. they're examined red flags in family's past.

the investigation reports that the vehicle stopped before driving off the cliff. april is national child awareness month. happened today, santa clara leaders will raise the memorial flag this morning. they'll introduce a new hotline to report child abuse. the flag raising gets under way at 9:00 this morning. >> back to baseball, the giants' home opener at at&t park. certainly it will be a special one. >> this will be the 16th anniversary. looking live at the ballpark right now, this has been the giants' home for 18 years now. this is season number 19. but the franchise's 136th season. quick history lesson here. the giants moved to the bay in 1958. the team played a couple of seasons at the old steel mission. the exhibit includes rare memorabilia and also artifacts.

big opening. the dow sold off 759 points. the dow, nasdaq, and s&p 500 all ending in correction territory or down 10% from their recent highs. the nasdaq is in correction for the first time since the uk's brexit vote in 2016. weakness in tech stocks and concerns about u.s. twrad policy fueling the selloff. the dow closing down 458 points to 2364. the nasdaq dropped to 6870. panera bread has patched a hole on its web sooitd that cyber security said was responsible for leaking millions of commerce' records. they were first notified in august and fixed the problem yesterday. more than 7 million accounts may have been affected exposing names, birth dates, e-mail addresses, and the last four digitses of credit card numbers. there's no evidence that any card information was accessed or stolen, but it also isn't saying why it took eight months to

we're expecting plenty of sunshine, morning temperatures in the 40s and 50s now, but eventually they'll start climbing into the 60s and 70s. oakland, 67. now, san francisco, 62. we look at bay area sky. we might see a little bit more cloud cover today. if we're going out to the big giants home opener, don't be surprised by the cloud cover. so we can expect to see that, especially increasing after the ballpark game. now, your doppler radar, i want to show you. this gives you a really good idea of what's to come ahead. we've got this system sitting right here. we have subtropical air coming from hawaii and that's going to create what's known as an atmospheric river. let me paint this picture for you. we've got this index moisture key. we've got that rolling in late thursday into friday, becoming widespread all day friday. and as of right now, the models are aligning and looking like it's going to carry over into

saturday. so friday right now is looking like a washout day. if you had outdoor plans, you're probably going to want to be prepared for that. rain estimate totals right now, friday into saturday, possibly up to 3 inches throughout the bay area which has the potential to be one of the wettest this season so far. the radar is scanning on our parking lot. it's not scanning right now but it's ready to go for thursday into friday night and saturday's big storm. we have the saturday system laid out thursday night. the late rain is moving in. if you check out, all day, complete washout. again, i do want to emphasize the intensity and the timeline could still change. we're still pretty far out. the closer we get to that timeline, the better we'll be able to give you a better exact hour by hour understanding of how this storm system will impact the bay area. now let's go ahead and send things over to mike.

stephon clark will join state lawmakers. officers in sacramento shot and killed clark last month. he was carrying only a cell phone as he was running from police. now, democratic lawmakers would announce new restrictions that would restrict lethal shooting when there are no other reasonable alternatives. that would give california the tightest rules like this of any state. >> 4:50. it appears california's car thieves are really having a harder time stealing those cars. thefts were down a little more than 6% last year. that's reversed two years of increases. last year, about 175 cars were stolen in california. that's still up to about a billion dollars. chp says anti-theft technology is stop manager of those thieves. there will be an imposed b.a.r.t. extension in livermore.

they're looking to increase their service five miles east of the station. last month they supported a conventional train line, but others include light rail or even bus service. happening today, san francisco transportation leaders will lay out some of their goals and targets for the next fiscal year. the mta is on a five-year prigs to improve public transportation. they're looking to make it the primary option for at least half of all city commuters. and happening today, a san jose man helped an elderly man from his burning home. >> chad collins, a neighbor, heard an explosion and saw his elderly neighbor crawling through her home. he crawled into action saving his neighbor from that fire. good for him to get recognition. coming up on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds.

more. >> he paid $379 to buy this rug right here and that is a close-up. you can see the problem. chris says the edges started to fray and this is a 5-inch diameter hole that opened up right in the middle of the rug. both of those things happened within the first four months. the website says you may return most items up to 30 days from the date of delivery. well, it has been 120 days here so the company only offered a 40% discount off a new rug. chris says hayneedle should have done more. he contacted us. they did three things. it offered chris a full $379 refund and let him keep both the rug and that 40% off coupon. in a statement a spokesperson said we are very sorry to hear that the quality of the rug was
