"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning, and thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. talking about the atmospheric river coming our way. we hear that, oh! pull out all the stops. the boots, umbrellas. >> get everything read. a good time to check your tires. right, mike? make sure they're not too warn out. traction. no spinouts or anything like that. we are expecting to see a couple change. right now, one thing we notice, a little more cloud cover than we had seen earlier this week. the temperatures remain fairly mild, in the 50s. about 53 right now for the peninsula. 50 degrees for san francisco,

and about 47 degrees for the north bay. the temperature trend shows a nice climb into the 60s and 70s once again, but today will be the last official complete dry day in the bay area before that system makes its way in. i'll break down the timeline of what we know so far coming up in a bit. i know mike is starting, though, with a look at the berkeley curve? >> right. because of this, starts to slow down. actually earlier than we saw this yesterday. the volume of traffic down and through emeryville heading towards the bay bridge, called the berkeley curve even though it's close to emeryville. west into the bay area, san francisco side, bottling up here. and as well as 580 and 24. everybody funneling down, slowing earlier than yesterday, farther back into the maze. why you see that slowing. the only trouble spot for the bay right now. everything else moving relatively smoothly and lighter than we often see. mild slowing through hayward for south 880 and nothing major. i did promise i'd show you that

palo alto camera. there it is lined up nicely. 101 heading into san francisco without issue. >> back out to nbc bay area's live team coverage of the youtube shooting. this morning, we are learning more about what may have motivated the alleged gunwoman. >> and have brand new detail what's workers can expect today. >> a story that is sending shock waves across silicon valley. team coverage live at youtube headquarters. developments overnight. you talked to the police chief. what have you learned? >> reporter: right, marcus and kris. you can see the police officers are still behind me, still moving around, closing off streets here, but the police chief just told reporters that the building, the youtube headquarters building, has been handed back to youtube, because the forensics unit wrapped up about a few hours ago. so now we're told that the

employees have heard that all meetings for today have been canceled, and they're being redirected to other campuses. meantime, the police chief told us this morning there's more information on the motive. >> people like me are not good for big businesses. >> reporter: several law enforcement sources confirm this is 39-year-old nasim aghdam in youtube videos. in one she complains youtube discriminated and filters her content. she complained youtube placed and age restriction on one of her workout videos because they were too racy but youtube failed, she says, to do the same with miley cyrus and micking minaj videos. her tar towed away last night from the crime scene. earlier off a missing person's report, mountain view police confirmed they found her asleep in a car in a parking lot. her family in riverside county

reportedly said she was upset youtube stopped paying her for content and the warned mountain view police aghdam might do something at youtube but police told them there was nothing they could do. >> the direction we're pointed based on the facts that we know is that the -- the suspect in this case had some type of problem or concern with the practices and policies of youtube, and we believe that because she was upset, that was her motive. as far as being definitive or specific as to why she was upset and what exactly caused her to do that, we still have a long way to go. >> reporter: around lunchtime yesterday aghdam opened fire on the youtube campus wounding three people, then killing herself. and later at 6:30 we'll show you how federal investigators are involved, but in what role. more on that at 6:30. reporting live in san bruno, for

"today in the bay's" reporter at san francisco general this morning. pete, we know some victims were rushed there, and the a lot of folks want to know, how e tthey doing? they were innocent bystanders in all this. >> reporter: kris, no update at this hour from san francisco general. last check, three victims sent here behind me at san francisco general to get treatment for their injuries. one male victim in critical condition. two female victims in fair to serious condition. playing for you that 911 call moments after shots were fired at youtube's headquarters. >> i have shots fired. 901 cherry avenue. receiving number, 911. so far nothing seen. just heard only. >> and a call people are running out of the business.

>> reporter: in fact, more than 1,000 people fleeing youtube headquarters running for saufr y safety after shots were fired in the patio area in the headquarters in san bruno. the shooting caused a massive response by police and all the chaos unfolded and spoke to a man at the nearby carl's jr. when that shooting took place. >> pop, pop, pop-pop-pop, pop-. -pop i'm like, what it's going on? i stood up, i see people just running out of the building. >> reporter: inside of that carl's jr., one of the victims actually ran inside for help and workers stepped in to help her out in that moment. we'll have more on that in the next half hour. live in san francisco, for "today in the bay." >> all right. thank you. 6:06 now. a little later this morning, san bruno police will hold another news conference at 9:00 this morning so we can get an update on the investigation.

nbc bay area will bring you a special report both on-air and on nbcbayarea.com. 6:06. now to our other top stories this morning. we now have new details from overnight on the marine helicopter crash near u.s./mexican border. >> also, the navy is working with investigators to figure out what cause add chopper to go down tuesday afternoon. we'll get to that story in a moment. video of the search there this morning. four crew members were onboard who are now presumed dead. that crash happened near el centro, near a naval air facility. the marine corps says the crash happened during a routine training mission. happening today, a large-scale rescue operation is underway for the three missing children in that mendocino county crash. this is a map of the areas we want to show you now. those rescues will search this area. roughly 30 miles an highway 1 near westport. new this morning, police say they obtained possible

surveillance video of one of the mothers at a store in fort bragg. that crash happened last week. police now believe that that car was deliberately driven off of that cliff. the bodies of the parents and three children have already been recovered. >> in the wake of the stephon clark shooting, california state lawmakers are pushing to change the standard by which officers can use deadly force. assembly members proposed this bill yesterday restricting when officers open fire to only when necessary rather than the current standard of when it seems reasonable. lawmakers say the goal is to encourage officers to diffuse confrontations like this one or use less than lethal weapons. good morning. it is 6:08 and as you wake up, starting to see those 50s out there. still seeing a couple 40s but rain a couple degrees warmer at this hour than yesterday. san jose, 5 degrees warmer. napa, 7 degrees warmer. today we'll see one of those days we'll see a lot of cloud

cover with some light peeks or slight peeks of sunshine throughout the afternoon. take you through the san jose temperature trend. notice on the icons, more clouds than we do sun headed for today. this is ahead of the arrival of that atmospheric river by 12:00, san jose at 65 degrees. jumping to about 70 degrees by 2:00 and predicted high for san jose today is about 73 degrees. now, for san francisco, similar conditions as well. right now already in the 50s, but by about 9:00 a.m., at about 56 degrees. climbing to a high of about 62, 63 for san francisco. now go and send things over to mike. >> vianey, overall, a relatively mild commute, although i did just hear about a crash. more details coming out of the tracy area. we'll talk about that heading into the altamont corridor. meanwhile, west of there looks great as far as speed sensors go. nice, smooth drive. west of grant road heading towards the dublin interchange, basically at speed. highway 84, mild.

good morning - breaking news we just recieved word m good morning, 6:13. getting ready for your day, noticing more cloud cover out there. a nice shot of san francisco as the city begins to wake up. temperatures once again seasonable, but big changes ahead. i'll break it down for coming up. and while i talked about the smooth drive southbound on 101, i didn't talk about slowing here. not a surprise. a slight drive, but still there on the island. testify before co house eneergy and commerce time for breaking biz news this morning. we just received word mark zuckerberg will testify before congress. the house energy and commerce committee, this will happen april 11th. a week from today.

this, of course, sparked by the revelation that facebook shared the personal information of 50 million users with cambridge analytica. now, this is not the first time that facebook had to answer questions before congress, but it is the first time the company is sending its ceo. meanwhile, just hours after the u.s. announced new tariffs on chinese goods, new tariffs this morning, this time to punish china for technology policies chine 2345 fia fired b bigger tariffs on cars. bad news for tesla trying to sell cars in china. tesla wasn't able to make as many model 3 sedans as it hoped. we talked in the past how tesla often misses the goals set for itself. all of these new tariffs spooked investors. remember monday, the dow fell as many as 750 points. we expect big red arrows again today. with this news of the tariff

battle, a trade war is expending. president trump for his part said a short time ago, we are not in a trade war with china. that war was lost many years ago by the foolish or the incompetent people who represented the u.s. meanwhile, we continue to have team coverage this morning of the shooting at youtube. thoughts go out to the employees and their families. as you can see, kris and marcus, running this video as well. the courtyard where it happened. a lot of courtyards in high-tech campuses. high-tech is built on campuses one of the reasons the south bay is so popular, because there's so much safe but not a very secure way of containing or keeping people out, which i don't think anybody ever thought of before as being an issue. college campuses, same way. this may be a security thing in the age of gun violence that we live in, high-tech needs to think about. >> another interesting thing is, vicky wen, angering coverage

i have been looking up for you guys the changing timing of the atmospheric river. now still on tap to make its arrival thursday night into friday. let's thaalk about that but fir your out the door temperatures. san jose 53. concord 54 at this hour. and microclimate highs for today similar to yesterday. biggest noticeable difference once again the clouds. livermore 74. san jose 73 and oakland, predicted high 67. san francisco along the coastline also remains comfortable, in the 60s. fairly seasonable for this time of year, and it will be a nice ride day with the exception of that cloud cover, but doppler radar now is showing subtropical plume of air just off the pacific. still well off the pacific, but this will make its impact and arrival. talk about what it's expected to bring. the heaviest rain is expected all day friday into saturday as well. saturday through the early morning hours into the afternoon on saturday. talking about an atmospheric river and another system. low pressure system, a cold

front. the top three impacts from the system right now are still looking like the two to four-inch range for the santa cruz mountains. this means fast-returning rivers. also expecting the possibility of a threat for mudslides. especially near the fire burn zones. of course, that sierra snow mountain, because it's a warmer stair, talking subtropical air, as of now melting some snow. could get a chance of seeing a couple inches heading towards sunday. for now, take you through thetimeline. wednesday, cloud cover. then thursday, start to see that moisture developing off the coast. the north bay starts to get a lot of that rain first initially. far off to the north. talk be santa rosa, ukiah area. seeing wet rain come in initially. by s11:00, rain pushing south. becomes widespread and fast-forward the timeline, all day friday through midnight expecting widespread rain, nonstop, from north bay down

past the south bay and even past monterey, and some moisture could affect parts of southern california as well. heading towards saturday, we get the arrival of that cold front. kicking up the winds early on saturday morning. so the heaviest of that rainfall, might actually end up coming between 1:00 a.m. saturday and about 12:00 on saturday afternoon. but as of right now, the good news is we're expecting that system, if you see, kind of moves out saturday night. making way for a much clearer sunday. at least from the rain that is. a lot of changes could still happen, though. send things over to mike. >> vianey, watching for that. right now present conditions great for driving. a lighter field. no real problems southbound 880 through hayward and a build across the san mateo bridge. a chance to look at most of the speed sensors. out to the altamont pass. talked about a change over here. looks like a crash and possibly disabled vehicle both off 205. merging with 280. showing you a couple different

confirmation just yet, but it appears as if the crown prince of saudi arabia arrived in the bay area for a highly anticipated visit. last night ow krcrews saw extra tight security at the silicon valley four seasons hotel along with a long line of black parked suvs and the green saudi arabian flag was flying. prince mohammed bin sallman wil meet with silicon valley heavyweigh heavyweights. >> it's proper to go to the financial capital in new york and in d.c., now coming to the tech capital, which is right here. >> the prince is expected to take a trip at some point to los angeles and will be here until saturday. and google's proposed village in downtown san jose. the "mercury news" google struck

a deal to buy another large piece of property between south of waterloo park near 87th. the plan shows google is expanding from the western side of downtown near the dearden station right into the core of downtown. and digging is done on a major transit project in san francisco. this is video of what will be the chinatown station of muni's central subway project. 12 stories deep, underground at stockton and washington streets. the project will link bay shore and mission bay areas to soma and downtown. crews just finished the excavation and will now start pouring the concrete. the new route will be ready by december of 2019. so, mike, add that to your traffic map. >> all right. get a graphic here. soon as they give us the icons to use. right now, using these icons. not showing delays. great news and, again, good progress on that central subway as well. the map here.

slowing for the northbound through the san jose area. nothing major and san martin shows traditional slowing in the traditional spot. mate lighter than traditional. back here, the bay bridge, backup overall, metering lights are on and slowing in dublin. nothing dramatic. folks coming in for the workweek. >> coming in for the workweek. spring break as well. it would be a tough weekend. >> it would. at least one of the two days. the good news out of this system. looks like it may move out in time to leave at least one of those days for fun outside with much more pleasant weather. right now, saturday's forecast looking like a fairly wet one. as a matter of fact, it's going to start off very gusty. very windy. which means we could get a lot of that sideways rain as that wind continues to blow. southerly winds. 64 degrees for the coast. bay 68. 65 inland. as that cold front sweeps in, it will drop temperatures down to slightly cooler than we've seen in the past two days.

bay bridge toll plaza. not unusual stretch but looking lighter than we normally see. peninsula, no delays showing up. talking about another delay north of there coming up. it is 6:44 now, and new and only on nbc, a florida teenage student many people call a hero is talking for the first time about his utter nightmare in the parkland, florida, shooting rampage. anthony borges blocked the door in one classroom to keep the shooter from going inside. borges then was struck by five bullets and nearly died. >> why did you decide to block the door? >> because -- i think i was going to die. so i blocked the door. >> reporter: so you thought you were dieing that day? >> yeah. >> nbc's kerry sanders with with

borges and his father. watch the entire interview during the 8:00 hour of this morning's "today" show. and the president just tweeted america will take action today to stop illegal immigration. >> it's not clear what that stronger action is. >> right. because today we're waiting for clarification. congress still in recess. we'll have to figure out if it's coming from the white house. we do know yesterday president trump said he would use the u.s. military on the border. take a listen. >> we have very bad laws for our border. and we are going to be doing some things. i've been speaking with general mattis. we'll do things militarily, until we can have a proper wall and security, we're going to be guarding our border with the military. that's a big step. we really haven't done that before, or certainly not very much before. >> it's not clear from the president realized putting u.s. traps on the border is actually not that uncommon.

actually both president george w. bush and barack obama did it, again using national guard troops. the law says they can only assist. they cannot participate in law enforcement. i talked to some of the california national guard who took part in the last deployment under president obama. they said they did a lot of surveillance work watching the border and radioing in information to border patrol which is allowed to take action. president trump is particularly worried about a group of roughly 1,500 central american refugees making their way through mexico. he call it is a caravan. the caravan is now stopped as mexican authorities try to figure out what to do. there's nothing in international law saying mexico has to stop hondurans or guatemalans from er entering the u.s. president trump's concerns, if the refugees make it to the border law says we have to give them protection if fleeing danger. that involves a lot of court hearings to determine their status. president trump call it is a
