it )s friday morning. it's friday morning. we're on early because we're in a microclimate weather alert. we're looking live at the radar and there on the screen, if you could make it out, that is the bay bridge. we are on early to help you get started on the next few days which are going to be very wet. i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have weather forecaster meteorologist here to give us a track of what is going on. we're seeing this wet stuff across the bay area. >> and today it is widespread which is why i want to give you a look at the doppler radar. i walked away from the camera way too early. satellite seeing it on your screen. you could see that atmosphere off the coast kind of making its

way in. and rob is back there helping with the graphics so you could see. there is that hose, right now looking far off to the north. but the north bay still seeing rain. so let m-- let me zoom in and show you what is going on. showers through san francisco and san rafael through dublin and san jose now getting a couple of the showers. i know on my drive in i saw that on my windshield. now if i zoom this out towards the north bay, it is expected to get, along with the coastal mountains and santa cruz, is expected to see the most out of the rain totals. so santa cruz, san rafael, seeing some moderate to heavy downpours. and if i zoom out, look at what is behind it. this is what our storm ranger is capturing. right here the line of showers and pockets of moderate to heavy downpour. off the coast, but eventually that will start to track in and as that does, you could see how that highlights those incoming

cells moving to the bay area. so let me give you a time line as far as when that cell is expected to move in. by about 4:23, bodega bay will see heavy downpours and by 4:34, guerneville and then 4:44 windsor will see some downpours but if you have to be somewhere early, head out now because the roads get tricky. now to the traffic maps. i have the radar turned on for the traffic maps. the highlights green zeen is where it is raining or precipitation just passed. we're seeing light slowing along 280 but aside from that chp still reporting a quiet start to the morning. but you could already see the bay bridge, no lights yet but it is wet and raining. slow it down. hopefully no spinout this is morning. back to you. >> and we have team coverage to keep you on track of what is going on with the rain as it is.

people in the north bay concerned about flooding near the burn areas. >> we are live in santa rosa, and sharon what is the situation there now? >> reporter: well kris and marcus, the rain is coming down lightly but on the way here along highway 101 it was pouring. but take a look. this is one of the burned areas. you could see this is an empty lot. this is one of the homes that was destroyed in the fire from last october. and you could see that they have a barrier set up so that it is going to keep the debris back as the storm continues through saturday. now the county has done a lot of preparation for the storm. sonoma and napa offices of emergency services are worried about potential slides and flooding. the october wild burned homes show the ground is unable to store water.

and now those survivors will survive another type of storm. rain. >> come back next week and we'll see if we are standing here. >> reporter: water agency program specialist barry duggan took us on a special tour to show us one of 22 rain gauges designed to monitor rainfall and measure how high surrounding creeks could rise there. and the -- take a look at the graphics here. now we're showing you the burned areas. law enforcement are saying fire officials saying people in the tubbs and nun fire areas should be concerned about the hillside. check out the hillsides throughout the storm for potential mudslides and report any activity that they see. they're expecting two to five inches of rain by tomorrow morning. so that is the potential there for mudslides. and coming up in half an hour we'll talk more about what you can do to prepare for the storms. back to you.

>> thank you, sharon cat sudda. we want to keep you up to date. we have a team of crews out they are fanned out across the bay area. our coverage continues all morning long. and we want to make sure you are prepared. get the nbc bay area app to get live radar wherever you are. also this morning, at 4:05, a developing story, one man is dead after a police shootout at a gas station in fremont. >> we are live at the arco station at the intersection of fremont and nicollet. and you don't hear of this too often, police with a shootout at a gas station. how did this all start out? >> reporter: good morning marcus and kris. you could see the fremont police department is still out here. they've been out here overnight and investigating this officer-involved shooting. you see the u-haul truck we believe it is the suspect was riding in that vehicle and to the right you could see the blue tent where the officers, that is

where the suspect ended up dying when he had a shootout with police. fremont police tell us the man they shot and killed here last night fired at officers and was wanted on a felony warrant for illegal possession of a firearm and a probation violation. around 6:45 last night undercover police located the man as a passenger in the truck and the officers called for several marked vehicles to pull over the suspect vehicle when the driver stopped here at intersection of fremont and nicollet avenue, police say the suspect ran out of the truck towards the arco gas station and according to police, pointed his gun at officers and began firing. police returned fire, struck the man at least once and knocked him to the ground. >> the cops jumped out of the truck behind me and said drop it. the guy that they were chasing pulled a gun and pointed it at me and the cops and then the cops fired first behind me. >> reporter: they did locate a

resolver by the suspect and bullet casings. officers tried to provide medical care but he was pronounced dead at the scene. they have not identified the suspect but we heard a witness describe him as being a young man. fremont crimes against persons' unit and the district attorney office are running parallel investigations into this shooting. bob redell, nbc bay area news. and we're learning about a house fire in the south bay leaving six people out of their homes this morning. flames broke out before midnight in san jose. in a neighborhood off capital expressway and aborn. two people did suffer minor injuries and one had to head to the hospital. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. president trump seeming to up the ante in the possible trade war with china. the president last night threatened to add $100 billion in new tariffs. he said that he was responding to unfair retaliation by china.

weather alert. -radar in weather wall and we are back. we continue to follow the rain throughout the bay area. we're under a microclimate weather alert. the radar scanning across the bay area as well as nbc bay area storm ranger. we'll get you up to date with the weather as well with your morning commute. 4:11 and police continue their search for a man who was threatening to go on a shooting rampage. we brought you this as breaking news during the midday newscast. police are looking for this man, dustin hamilton. police say that he broke into his parents' home and stole a shotgun and handgun on wednesday and left behind a manifesto threatening to shoot up a apartment complex and kill police. he is schizophrenic.

and the youtube shooter, how she got her gun. her unit has been digging into it and found out that nasim aghdam acquired the handgun two months ago purchasing it legally in san diego. as we previously reported, she went to a shooting range near san bruno hours before opening fire on the youtube campus. tlis are not saying how many shots she did fire but she did reload once before killing herself. her experience may be the reason the shooting victims survived and that there were no more victims. a new flier is being distributed by the mendocino county sheriff's department showing the three children still unaccounted for after a crash on highway one. it is over a week since the car went off the cliff. the parents and three siblings were killed in the crash. but so far no sign of the other three children. there is a new clue in this case. a cell phone discovered near the

crash site now police that that wasn't an accident. >> i'm no longer calling this an accident, i'm calling it a crime. >> >> now police are investigating the cell phone to see if it belongs to either of the two mom's killed. the two had trouble in the past, accusing allegations of misdemeanor assault. all six children were adopted. storm. >> the radar has our regular satellite radar but our storm ranger up and running and scanning to give us a higher resolution of what we are dealing with and what is incoming. first a nice shot of satellite radar because it is a goodo -- idea of what is hang now and what is to come. the atmospheric river effect and that pineapple express as the subtropical air taps into hawaii. and satellite radar with showers moving through san francisco and san mateo and san rafael and the north bay is expected to see the most in terms of rain totals, santa rosa seeing the rain and san rafael. a comparison. so that is satellite radar but i want to show you storm ranger because this is a higher resolution as it comes in and we track that timing to bodega bay

at about 4:23 and 4:34 in guerneville. we're seeing the cell move in. so you see our storm ranger up a scanning and nice shot seeing the heavier showers move in. out near bridge haven, you could see the moderate to heavy downpours right now. same through bodega bay and santa rosa. we have a reporter sharon out here in santa rosa and probably going to get slammed in the next five to ten minutes so we'll keep a close eye because she's focusing on burn scars to create the concern for mudslides and flooding. ov to the east bay, oak and san leandro getting showers and the red is the storm ranger sweep. and berkeley getting showers. and down through san jose which is where storm ranger is located in our parking lot, it is taking up the showers in mountain view, fremont, san mateo and this is

becoming widespread. and within the next couple of hours it will continue this way. at least especially here through the bay area, not just from the north bay but down through the south bay. now let's talk about the flood watches because this is our big area for concern. right now flood watches in place for santa rosa, san rafael and the north bay and down through the santa cruz mountains. and what that means is it will be -- we'll be expecting heavy rain at times and a concern for flooding based on the current forecast. the flood watch was issued yesterday and this is expected to remain in effect through saturday morning. it is still a watch, not upgraded to a warning just yet. so let's talk about the rain totals an why we're concerned about the burn scars. if i take the time line to around lunch, so the time people are staying inside or just grab an umbrella and get some lunch but santa rosa under an inch at about 12:30 and ben low man -- and these are low. we're thinking santa cruz mountains might see more rain

than that. but i want to show you san jose. because if you notice, san jose is going to fall into that rain shadow by about 7:30 p.m., santa rosa will be at over an inch and then if i take you through saturday a.m., which saturday early in the morning, expecting a cold front to sweep in kicking up the gusty conditions. santa rosa is closer to about two inches and same for san an sell mow and look at san jose. and if you live in the south bay and think it is not raining as much as they told us, that is because the south bay and right even through san jose and sunnyvale will have the rain shadow but north bay expected to get slammed so keep that in mind for the day now your current traffic kins. the radar on as well for the roads. so you could get a good idea. the green roads, these are the highways. but that green that you see just off the mountains and the roads is the radar tracking. some have moved through or the

areas that are seeing rain. and one of the areas that are seeing rain is the bay bridge and we know how quickly things could get dangerous so slow down and turn on the windshield wipers and head out now so you are not in a big hurry. back to you. new this morning southwest airline is adding daily nonstop services to four new cities out of san jose international starting on sunday. they are boise, houston hobby and spokane and st. louis. southwest is also adding sunday service to new orleans and albuquerque. the service to existing cities is expanding to go southwest.com for more details. i'm sure just about everybody have facebook. so how do you feel about paying for facebook. coming up, our interview with cheryl sandberg making headlines this morning.

gas of a defect in tires that could be linked to nearly 100 deaths and injuries. a federal investigator is looking into claims that certain tires used on recreational vehicles were allegedly prone to failure. it may have led to several crashes over two decade period. and goodyear is fully cooperating with the investigation and followed industry standards for the tires some of which were mused on motor homes. a new comment from facebook sheryl sandberg that has social media buzzing. would you pay for facebook to opt out of the data driven advertising. she is sitting down this morning for a one-on-one with savannah guthrie. >> could you come up with something that could be an opt out of please don't use my profile data for advertising? >> we have different forms of opt out, you don't have an opt out at the highest level. this is a paid product.
