it )s friday morning 4:30 and we are in a microclimate weather alert. it is friday morning and we are waking up to rain across the bay area. a live look at our radar this morning. you could see that we are monitoring every angle of the storm. good morning and thank you for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. we started to help the early birds get off on your way
4:31 am
safely. we want to follow up with vianey tracking everything. and there is a lot of color on your map. >> definitely. especially when you look at the north bay, that radar is lighting up with yellow and red hues which means we're moderate to heavy downpours. so i want to start off with the satellite radar because it paints a good picture of everything that we've been tracking and where we stand right now in terms of this storm. so you can really see, there it is, like a hose effect coming in with the atmospheric river, really kind of taking its aim now through -- the models are showing further north than what we had originally seen in the earlier models, but that will mean that the north bay, even though we had already predicted this, will be seeing the majority of the hit from the storm system but still expecting to see the widespread rain. now if i zoom in closer, you could see san francisco seeing the showers right now. dublin as well. san mateo and satellite radar showing a couple of cells pushing through santa rosa right
4:32 am
now. we've also got our storm ranger up and scanning right now in our parking lot and taking a look at the north bay. i wan to turn your attention to the monitor because you could really see how this lights up with the orange and yellow hues, really becoming heavy downpours. so right now reporter that is up there -- sharon, get ready, because it is coming your way within the next couple of minutes. already making its way through. now let's get a check of the roads. now chp has not reported any major accidents, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't slow down. and even though there aren't too many cars on the roads sh the screen highlights the zones wet. it is easy to spin out in -- milpitas and the bay bridge is a mess. the metering lights are on and it is barely 4:32 and i think they're trying to do crowd control on the roads. back to you. >> thank you very much. it is 4:32 and our team of reporters are fanned out in the elements, part of the north bay
4:33 am
could get up to five inches of rain over the next couple of days and that is causing a lot of concern for people living in the recent burn areas. >> "today in the bay" sharon katsuda is live at the boy where the storm is running through. and how are things now? the rain is coming down and certainly you're getting wet out there. >> reporter: well kris and marcus, vianey was right. about ten minutes ago she said it would be pouring here and it is. take a look. this is the area they are concerned about. this is the burn area in santa rosa in fountain grove and this is an empty lot. this is one of the homes destroyed. now it is an empty lot. back in the fire of october of last year. and this is the concern right now. they are expecting two to five inches of rain falling in this area by tomorrow. and they're expecting strong winds as well. firefighters say those winning in the fire areas should keep an eye on the hillsides and look for any movement and report any
4:34 am
activity. sonoma and napa county are worried about potential slides and flooding. the october wild burned home s s and the ground is unable to absorb water. this couple will now survive another type of storm, rain. >> don't worry about mudslides. come back next week and we'll see if we are standing in mud or not. >> reporter: water agency program specialist barry duggan took nbc bay area on a special tour to show us one of 22 rain gauges designed to monitor rainfall and measure how high surrounding creeks could rise. and take a look at what you should do if you are trying to prepare for this storm in the north bay. you should tie down your patio furniture, because there may be strong winds by tomorrow morning. and keep your cell phone handy for emergency alerts.
4:35 am
clean your storm drains and keep batteries handy in case there are power outages. live in santa rosa, i'm sharon cass you'da from "today in the bay." >> san francisco is preparing for the rain as well and a lot of it. crews are putting up 500 yards of flood barrier in the mission district. they cleared out storm drains to prevent any sewage back-up as well. and we continue to head south in our coverage. this storm is not leaving any part of the bay untouched. santa cruz mountains are expected to receive a heavy dose of the rain. >> "today in the bay" is live in the santa cruz mountains and there is a flood watch in effect, there is a burn area there as well, anser. >> the rain is not a big issue but get ready it is coming. the big issue is the thick fog. but a flood watch going into
4:36 am
effect at 5:00 people this morning. and it will last until tomorrow morning. now the drive up here wasn't too bad. and as we've been telling you, get ready, forecasts predict up to four to six inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and expect periods of heavy rain coming soon. if you remember from last year, the storm brought mudslides and rock slides. i checked with santa cruz county and they estimate the damage to be over $100 million. one of the big concerns is the drought which could fall at any time and even higher in this bad weather, and the mudslides and rock slides are possible in areas of steep terrain and increase during the heavy rain so chp is warning drivers to be extra careful and the county wants to remind residents of the simple steps that go along way to ease the pressure and with gutters and having sandbags on hand. the country wants to remind drivers that urban flooding is
4:37 am
possible. and now chp said one of the biggest issues they have is drivers not using their fog lights. so that is an important thing to keep in mind. as you make it through the area during these heavy rains. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, i'm anser hassan for "today in the bay." >> and it is 4:37 and today we'll watch the rain at lake oroville which could rise to a triggering level. the main spillway is not yet fully repaired after last winter. but it could be soon put to work as early as this weekend. you will remember that last year the spillway crumbled forcing nearly 200,000 people to evacuate their homes. 4:37 and that storm is already making an impact in yosemite. the national park service is closing yosemite valley due to flood concerns. park range res say the park will close tomorrow at 5:00 and reservations through saturday have been canceled. the storm could cause a river to

4:51 am
on your friday morning we continue to follow the weather. right now taking a look out at fremont as you could see a lot of people on the wet roads which are experiencing across the bay area this morning. >> and if you need to head out this morning, do give yourself extra time, the roadways are very sloppy. vianey is tracking those and we have heard of a couple of solo spinouts meaning people just going too fast for the
4:52 am
conditions. >> going too fast. and it only takes a small amount of ponding water since it is really dark outside to make a situation become dangerous. chp hasn't reported any major traffic collisions at this hour but i have this up for you, and the reason i wanted to pop up this traffic map is because i turn on the radar behind it and so these highlighted areas are not the roads, that is where -- it is either raining or the rain has passed. which means the roads are wet in that area. we're seeing a lot of these areas right now all wait from san francisco down to the south bay and also the north bay getting slammed at this hour. so slow it down, folks. i'll show you a couple of live cams. so i could give you a better idea. golden gate bridge, we were seeing heavy downpours but you have to remember that we haven't seen the worst of this yet. this is barely starting to make its way through the bay area. and we are expecting another round of showers throughout the day. and then it will get even heavier just around the time that you are getting out of work into tonight and tomorrow morning. bay bridge looking absolutely
4:53 am
amess. we have our radar up and you could see in the north bay santa rosa and rohnert park and petaluma and novato will start getting moderate to heavy downpours where you see the yellow and red cells, if i could turn your attention to this, it is pretty important, that atmospheric river off the coast now it is showing it taking aim far off to the north and this is going to stall a little bit over the north bay which means if you live in the north bay you are going to get slammed, which is why we're looking out for flood concerns and mudslide concerns. now if you live down near the south bay, the santa cruz mountains are going to be taking -- you could see where the green and darker green further down on the this map -- santa cruz mountains will take the majority of the rain and then it climbs over the mountains and san jose falls in the rain shadow. so if you live in the south bay, san jose or santa clara, you think it is not raining or pouring, that is the reason why. but if you live in san francisco or the east bay, get ready because the rain is expected to continue within the next couple
4:54 am
of hours. i'll give you a closer timeline and break it down once again coming up. back to you. >> thank you. it is 4:53. nbc bay area responds to billing mistakes all of the time. we get a lot of calls about this one and some of the biggest ones involve medical bills. >> >> chris chmura is here with those strategies to correct them. plus the steps nbc tv stations are taking to combat medical debt. chris? >> reporter: miss takes on medical bills are rampant. the personal finance site nerd wallet did research and studied thousands of bills and found errors on 49% of them. where there were mistakes, charges were 26% higher than they were supposed to be. so what do you do about it? you speak up early. and often. if your issued a bill immediately after your treatment, scrutinize it before you leave the office. ask questions and don't leave until you either get it settled or get a written commitment to fix it. if it is a bill that is wrong
4:55 am
and arrives in the mail after the fact, don't waste any time starting the process of challenging. it immediately call the office and contest the mistaken charges. be sure to document every single call you make and keep every single piece of paper you receive. that being said, we know people sometimes give up fighting and those unpaid bills become medical debt. so nbc is partnering with an organization that can offer immediate help to hundreds of families. our company made a $150,000 donation to our ip medical debt, a new york nonprofit will that will use our donation to buy and forgive $15.5 million to $20 million of medical debt for people around the country. we can't forgive the debt of specific people because the charity is buying the accounts in bulk from debt collectors but if your account is part of the batch of $1.5 million that the bay area is bieg uying up to
