of rain in some spots. now here's a glimpse at storm ranger, our exclusive mobile doppler radar. some parts are in the clear. this is good news, especially for those in the north bay area. good morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kira klapper. we have live team coverage for you this morning. we begin with meteorologist rob mayeda. he has a closer look at what's happening right now. >> right now we are beginning to see the significant rain move away from the bay area and pushing out. as you can see right now, the flood watches are still up for the santa cruz mountains in the north bay and a flood advisory around marin county has been dropped. we will continue to see the watches likely dropping, likely within the next two hours or so. san francisco, you have fog. the rain for the most part has moved out. in san jose, still seeing rain showers now. moving away from downtown as our storm ranger mobile doppler radar shows a significant clearing line now from downtown

san jose west over towards palo alto. san francisco, oakland, patchy fog. but again, the main rain event, starting to move out of the bay area. so as we look at this hour by hour, we are seeing this clearing develop as which go through the afternoon. but check out that low around the pacific coast. and 60 to 70 miles an hour winds today. this is a massive storm affecting entire west coast. hour by hour, you can see just like that, by 9:00, most of the widespread rain should be away from the south bay, but lingering clouds and still a chance we'll see some isolated showers, around the east bay and south bayhills. patchy fog can be a concern. isolated rain can be possible as we get into early sunday morning so the good news is the rain is moving out. by 9:00 a.m. again most should be out of the bay area with some clearing skies setting up for the rest of the day. we'll show you the epic rain

totals and more rain could be in your sunday forecast coming up in about 12 minutes. >> thank you. well, 7:02 right now. new this morning in the midst of the storm that dropped three inches of rain in places in san francisco, it was a big power problem for thousands of people. >> overnight power outage affected 10,000 pg&e customers in the lower nob hill neighborhood. it caused a lot of problems for locals and out of towners who were trying to explore the city. >> "today in the bay" has more. did the storm play a role in the outage? >> reporter: well, good morning, guys. that will be part of pg&e's investigation. i spoke with them a short while ago, they said it's likely due to underground equipment failure. the crews are still out here, cones have been set up to divert traffic. power was fully restored around 4:30 a.m., but almost 11,000 people were without power at one

point. to give you an idea of what that was like, here's video from a few hours ago. the streets of san francisco, completely black. no traffic lights, no streetlights. store fronts blacked out. this went from lower nob hill all the way to union square. i spoke to a few stores like 7/11 and starbucks, they're thankful the power was restored before the start of business day. we spoke to one man in town for a conference and he's staying at the hilton hotel. he said there was no power in his room. he and his friends had to roam the streets in the dark looking for food. >> it was challenging. the cable was out in the hotel so we'll venture around the city right now in the darkness. >> reporter: now we checked with muni and b.a.r.t., they didn't have any interruption. pg&e will be out here to determine the exact cause of what happened. reporting live in san francisco. >> good to have the lights back on this morning.

right now a look at the power outages across the bay. about 1,000 customers still without power. now, here's a look at the pg&e website. most of the outages are caused by weather. there were reported problems in walnut creek overnight and up and down the coast. >> also the heavy rain caused problems for drivers on highway 4 near martinez. we received this video overnight. you can see drivers carefully navigating their cars through the flooded roadway. and there was a lot of standing water across the bay. we have a reminder just a few inches of rain can carry away a car. and not too far from there, here's what it looked like on one road in arun da. weather may have played a role in the crash on highway 24. that car crashed into the median on the rain-slick freeway near the exit. a driver was taken to the hospital. no word on the severity of the

injuries. now wine country has proven extremely vulnerable because of last fall's deadly wildfires that killed 44 people. today in the day's bob radel has more. there's some improving news we hear for them this morning. >> reporter: there is. good morning. as rob mentioned, there's still a flood watch in effect for the mountains here in the north bay. you can see the rain has finally stopped falling here in the fountain grove area. this was once full of homes, that was sadly levelled six months ago this weekend during the north bay fires. the santa rosa fire departments were worried that the mud lots would be washed away and fortunately that did not happen, despite the heavy rainfall. but the city was prepared and workers installed straw waddles around the storm drains. those are the tubes of straw that keep debris contained. i actually spoke with the santa

rosa fire department in the last ten minutes and the assistant fire marshal said that the rain system is hitting marin county instead. i spoke with emergency dispatch for the county. they tell me the only weather related problems they had overnight were a number of trees down in western sonoma county. i spoke with the fire chief of -- near gernville, he said it wasn't much rain in terms of significant problems or damage. reporting live here in santa rosa, bob redell. >> whenever that storm rolls through, track every move of it on the free app. click on the weather tab for the life interactive radar. we want to see your photos of the rain. send them to us and please tag us on instagram and twitter. we might use your content on the

at 7:10 here's the neat view from san jose. looking at the trailing edge of a frontal boundary moving away from downtown and currently 60 degrees. muggy with the showers. you can see on our storm ranger mobile doppler radar how that is pushing off to the south and east but we're not quite done with the rain yet. more scattered showers coming up in a few minutes. slick roads causing dangerous driving conditions out there. this is brand-new video of a crash on the south bay. look at this rollover on oakland avenue near 101 in san jose.

this is just one of several crashes we have seen so far this morning. we hope everyone stays safe. developing this morning a plane tumbled from the skies over the north bay. >> and officials confirmed in the last half hour that the pilot has died. this came in overnight. you can see smoke still coming out of the cockpits just after our crew arrived. the crash happened near manor lane last night. not far from the petaluma national airport. there are still a lot of unanswered questions. >> right now, sergeant spencer crumb joins us on the phone and we have a lot of questions about this. first, what can you tell us what caused this plane to go down? >> well, we don't know what caused the plane to do down at this point. the national transportation safety board is on their way here. my understanding is they're coming from alaska and they'll be here tomorrow to start that actual investigation. >> do we know anything about

where the plane was coming from or was it going to that municipal airport in petaluma? >> yes, our understanding is that it was taking off from the petaluma municipal airport, en route to san diego county. >> and was there any sort of distress call before it went down? >> spencer -- >> can you hear me? >> we seem to have lost part of what you said. was there any distress call before the plane went down? >> yes, there was a distress call that came out about 6:40 p.m. the air force identified it as a distress signal. it took us three hours to actually find the plane crash. >> what about the pilot's experience? do you know if he was an experienced pilot or was it his first travel alone? >> we have not confirmed the identity of the pilot yet. however, we -- we don't know enough about him at this point. >> so we'll wait for the crews to arrive to investigate from

alaska. and we will keep our viewers updated as the weekend progresses. officer, thank you for joining us this morning. >> you bet. take care. it is 7:13 right now. we are also following breaking news out of western canada and it is devastating. 14 people were killed in a crash between a big rig and a bus carrying a junior league hockey team. it happened as members of the humboldt broncos and coaches were headed for a game. they were between 17 and 21 years old. 14 others were injured and taken to the hospital. three of them are in critical condition. authorities say a total of 28 people were on the bus at the time of that crash. this photo of the team was posted to twitter in march. police have not yet confirmed the victims' identities nor their ages or whether some of the people were on the bus. well, so much more ahead for you on "today in the bay" including if a driver -- an uber

and taking a live look outside right now. doesn't look too bad here in downtown san jose. that storm continues to cross in the bay area. we'll continue that live and rob mayeda will have a look at that coming up. and a story out of southern california. that's where a hiker who spent three days in the wilderness alone and hurt is now sharing his story of survival. >> i just knew if i gave up

though that i would be giving up my life. no one would find me where i was, and i found the will to keep going. >> santos was hiking near malibu when he slipped and fell down a rock face and hurting his leg. he had to drink water from the mountain stream. rescue crews tried to find him but couldn't see him because of the trees. he managed to him top a salvation army camp where he was rescued. an uber drive tore the rescue when he sees a car driving suspiciously on the approach to the san mateo bridge. that car had been hit and was drifting to the side of the room when the uber driver eric andrea stepped in. >> maybe the guy called the police, i get off my shift and i stopped the car and the police are coming. >> now the driver had just left the dentist office and had an allergic reaction to the

medication and began to lose consciousness. standing in the road to flag down for help even if the driver can see you is not the best practice. getting back to our microclimate weather coverage, yosemite has closed the gates to visitors because of flood concerns. the merced river was runs through yosemite was expected to surpass flood stage overnight. waters are expected to reach their peak today. park rangers will reassess the conditions tomorrow after the storm passes. >> and that rain altering a lot of people's plans today. rob mayeda has a look at the weekend forecast. it looks like it's passing through so hopefully we'll get rid of it soon. >> it's worn out the welcome. by the numbers these rain totals are very impressive when you factor in the fact that it's april. we saw three to six inches of rain in the north bay but let's highlight san francisco.

2.36 so far. second wettest day ever in april for san francisco. keep in mind the monthly average for april is about three-quarters of an inch to two inches of rain so some of the north bay saw all of that fall in 24 hours and some places getting as much as six inches of rain in just the last 36 hours. right now catching a bit of a break in san rafael. a bit of fog and misty in san francisco. it is muggy outside still. 60, some rain falling south of san francisco. dublin cooler. showers at 57 degrees and then downtown san jose you see the trailing edge of the front moving away from downtown. currently 60. as we see here under your doppler radar, downtown san jose catching a break. things are starting to improve now. other than the fog in san francisco you can see how most of the rain is still in the santa cruz mountains. morgan hills south, but that should be moving out in the next

hour or so. there it goes, that frontal boundary which was hung up over the north bay for most of yesterday afternoon passing through the bay area overnight. we will see some clearing, but still a chance of isolated showers. a bigger brunt of the storm today. you see the curl of the clouds up to the north. 972 millibar low is very intense. 60 to 70 miles an hour winds expected on the coast. and most places picking up just a tenth of an inch of rain at best. but the scattered showers will come through the afternoon today. you can see how that rain line as depikted in the future cast moves out. notice the low level clouds stuck behind it. we won't clear much today and here around campbell and los gatos, that might force the clouds up and still a few showers in the south bayhill tops as we go through the

overnight hours tonight. again, the main rain event has moved on. highs in the mid to upper 60s. fast forwarding to the sunday forecast, dry north wind. so sunday plan on more sunshine and temperatures climbing up and probably less humidity. next chance of rain after that will come in on tuesday, but see how the system falls apart. not a lot of rain expected out of that cooler system for wednesday or thursday. probably the best chance of more rain, but you will see in the seven day forecast a drying trend taking shape for the second half of the weekend and warmer temperatures sunday and monday. we'll have the next chance of showers on tuesday. likely a north bay event. then thursday we'll be watching for the next chance of rain with some cooler temperatures which we hope will mean snow here instead of the 10,000 foot snow levels and all the rain out of the sierra leading into yosemite. >> hoping for that, rob. still a lot more ahead on

discovery. a car was found over an embankment in the oakland hills. the sheriff's deputies discovered the body of a woman in the car. she believes that the victim disappeared several days ago after visiting her boyfriend near the crash site. the police will not confirm in the body is the missing woman. it's the end to the long and a difficult week of the youtube employees. last night, the ceo posted this message on twitter thanking people for the support of the company and the employees. we are learning the mountain view police department did not run nasim aghdam's name through the database when they encountered her. the officers do this type of check when they see a red flag and during the encounter of finding her sleeping in the walmart hours before the

shooting, they say she did not give off any red flags. >> it did not rise to the level that the police felt that the situation should be escalated to making notifications to security or law enforcement. >> a department spokesperson told us checking the gun registration database for someone who is found just sleeping in their car might violate that person's constitutional right. so they never learned aghdam had recently bought a gun and was 500 miles away and was close to the company that her father said she was angry with. and a manifesto of a man who threatened people is now off the street. dustin hamilton is accused of stealing guns from his parent's home. that was on thursday when his estranged family found the manifesto. the family says that hamilton seen here as a younger man was

diagnosed as schizophrenic. just shy of 7:27. coming up this rain is finally moving out. just in time for the weekend. but a threat still looms. meteorologist rob mayeda tells us why we're under a microclimate weather alert. and the giant and the dodgers game was rained out last night. it was the first rainout at at&t park in 12 years. the next time the team will be able to play. some are without food and light. thousands left without power overnight. and it wasn't because of the rain.

24 hours from berkeley to casper valley. the numbers are dropping off as you head into the central and south bay. right now, flood watches still in effect for the north pay. all of the counties of the north bay. santa cruz mountains under that too through mid-morning and localized flood advisories through central sonoma county where there's some standing water and ponding on the roads and through san mateo county along the coast. so we're finally beginning to catch a break with the rain moving away from san jose and we're getting a bit of clearing. don't plan on a lot of sunshine today. we will see a lot of moisture left over in the form of low clouds. showers starting to become less widespread, heading through the afternoon as the hour by hour outlook goes, while the widespread rain moves on, not a lot of clearing and from lunch time to mid afternoon, a few showers near the hills which may follow us into tonight. coming up, we'll let you know

just to give you an idea of what it looked like, here is video from a few hours ago. the streets of san francisco were completely black. no traffic or streetlights, store fronts, blacked out. i spoke with some local businesses like starbucks. they're happy that the power had to come back on before they opened their shops. i spoke to one man staying at a hotel near union square. he said his room had no power and he and his friends went out in the streets for something to eat. >> so the cable is out in the hotel. so we're going to venture around the city in the darkness. >> reporter: now i checked with muni and b.a.r.t., schedules are on time. pg&e crews will still be out here to determine the exact cause. reporting live in san francisco, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we did some testing overnight and we just found out that there are more than 1,800

pg&e customers without power right now. here's the website. there were problems in walnut creek overnight and reported outages up and down the peninsula. most of the outages have been restored but the biggest problem seems to be in the north bay. nearly 600 of those outages is because of this right here. look at this photo. this is a tree down in mill valley and the police tweeted this out. this is at bigelow avenue. the police are warning people to stay away from the area. also new this morning the heavy rain caused problems for those on highway 4 at pacheco boulevard near martinez. you can see the drivers carefully navigating their cars through the flooded roadway. and this isn't the only place that this is happening. there's a lot of standing water on roadways across the bay area. we want to remind you it takes a few inches of rain to carry away a car. >> yeah, not too far from there,

here is one road, and this is on highway 24. that car crashed into the median in the rain slick freeway. that driver was taken to the hospital and no word on the severity of the injuries. now to the north bay. one of the most susceptible spots that nbc bay area has been watching for days. wine country has proven extremely vulnerable to last fall's wildfires. bob redell is live in one neighborhood that picked up between three to five inches of rain, but you have some improving news this morning. >> reporter: yeah. the assistant fire marshal said they feel lucky because the bulk hit marin county and san francisco more than here and they were concerned about fountain grove which you can see was levelled during the fires that took place six months ago this weekend.

the north bay fires that levelled many of the homes here. you have the mud, you have the dirt lots. the concern being the water could have washed the lots away. that's why the city, the fire department installed these straw waddles up in the lots and along the storm drains. if you're not familiar with these, these waddles are tubes of straw designed to keep debris from moving and going into the drains. they weren't -- i can't say they weren't necessary but we haven't seen any problems with debris here. that's because the rain wasn't as bad as they were expecting. i did speak with dispatch earlier this morning. this is the only storm related issue in the western part of sonoma county. they had a number of trees down but nothing that caused damage. i spoke with the fire department in the guerneville area. it wasn't much in terms of problems or any damage. reporting live here in santa rosa, bob redell, nbc bay area

today, that's been pushed back. we'll have that for you in a moment. but we broke that here yesterday on bay area, yesterday that it was postponed until the 28th of april. this is first rainout at at&t park in 12 years. this is what it looked like yesterday, a couple of hours before the scheduled first pitch. just the sixth rainout since the team moved into this ballpark 19 years ago. last night's game will be made up as part of a rare day/night doubleheader on april 28th like marcus just said. also today's game was moved back from 1:05 to 3:05. the a's with a gut wrenching loss and the rookie being called the modern day babe ruth. hitting the third home run of the season and otani is not only a slugger but a starting pitcher. he will pitch tomorrow. the green and gold squandered a

six-run lead. this just -- upton three run homer put the a's in front for good. 13-9. and the nba playoffs are a week away. the warriors will play the final home game of the regular season against the new orleans pelicans. the game tips off at 5:30. and if you don't see it there we are in the -- we are in the middle of a microclimate weather alert. we'll check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> yeah, we can see they're mopping up the infield there. and the rain has come to a stop. we're hoping for better conditions this afternoon. while the main rain band moves away, still scattered showers as part of the saturday afternoon forecast and we'll have a look at that when we come back.

up to san rafael, a little bit of a mist out there but the rain has moved away from the north bay. dublin and the tri-valley, 57 this morning. still scattered showers around the east bay. a live look inside at&t park. 60. wind picking up to 15 miles an hour. the crews working the infield now. clearing the water off from the rain that fell overnight and here's some good news. the start of today's game was pushed back to 3:00. actually 3:05 to account for any lingering showers. the baseball weather should hold up tonight up like last night where we had the cancellation. today should be okay in san francisco. right now, san jose starting to see the rain moving out to the south and the east. the east bay, other than the mist, not really seeing a whole lot. you can see the heavier rain showing up in the yellows and orange now moving away from south san jose and out of gilroy and san mateen in the next hour or so. so the complex is starting to clear the bay area.

in the meantime, the parent low pressure system, it's very impressive for april. bringing winds for the western washington coast and that's too far north to bring any of that wind our way. rain totals from here on out, instead of inches of rain we are looking at enough showers to briefly wet the ground so rain totals from here certainly starting to come on down. hour by hour you'll notice the clouds stick around. there's still a chance. especially on the hill top seeing a few showers. as we get into tonight, one thing to watch out for thanks for all the rain and the light winds, we could have some patchy fog setting up. so isolated showers today. highs in the mid to upper 60s. and now for your sunday, as the north winds begin to pick up, we should begin to see more clearing so certainly sunday as we head into monday will be the sunnier half of your weekend forecast and should also start the workweek. so moving forward, not a strong ridge of high pressure but enough to keep us dry until

monday. tuesday, you see how that system falls apart. there's a chance of rain on the seven day forecast that doesn't look very strong at all. it's weakening. and another colder system will drop in wednesday night and thursday. which might hold together a little bit better. so better chance of seeing some rain out of that reaching areas south of san francisco. wednesday into thursday, and then we should get another break on friday. good news in the seven day forecast. the super soaking is done. after this morning, we get some clearing skies. patchy thick fog for tomorrow. monday into tuesday, that chance of showers i think mainly for the north bay and monday's temperatures actually pretty mild. mid to upper 70s with more sunshine on monday. less than a quarter of an inch for most folks, it will be on thursday, as temperatures trend cooler the second half of the week. back to you. >> looks good to see the sunshine icons. rob, thanks.

how it looks on the doppler radar. widespread rain is moving out and showers are still possible today. it's our clear the shelters segment. special guest, the executive director and the k-9 trainer is here with bella. she is what we're calling a senior chihuahua in your shelter. and tell me about her. she's 10 years old, right? but you haven't had her for ten years. >> no. she's quite new to us, but we have found that she's wonderful with all kinds of situations and people. children, adults, other dogs. >> so basically she's the perfect pet. sometimes we say would be better with an energetic family and a big yard. this dog would be better with a couch potato, but this dog can acclimate to any home. >> right. >> she's technically ready for a new home and she's part of a new program that starts today.

it's sort of like foster to adopt. >> right. sort of a transition program. a lot of times we get people as prospective adoptable, they're not ready to make the life long commitment. but they love a particular animal and they want to sort of test drive. so this foster to adopt program is an opportunity to take a dog or a cat home for a day or a weekend and see how they interact with the other members of the family. and if they're interested in making a long term commitment they adopt for the lifetime. >> that's like a test drive to see if it works out. they can have the pet from two days to a full week. >> a week or so. >> that all starts today and bella is one of the 12 pets in the program right now. >> right. we're focusing right now on the senior pets. so in an effort to try to, you know, get those guys into forever homes. >> yeah. just because they're older in years doesn't mean they're any less wonderful.

the fog is around. looks like the rain may have stopped in this area. so hopefully for now. >> our reporters have been out there all morning long. let's go to "today in the bay" bob redell. there's still a flood watch in effect where you are? >> reporter: good morning to you. fortunately, the system skirted south of santa rosa and sonoma county. these lots used to be homes, they were wiped out six months ago in the north bay fires. they're concerned that the mud could shift that's why they put the straw waddles out before the storm came in. fortunately, the worst that happened here is muddy lots with large puddles. we spoke with the central dispatch and the only damage they knew about were trees that came down, but no significant damage or issues. as i mentioned earlier we were

speaking with the chief of the monty rio fire department, they have had six inches of rain over the past couple of days but no significant damage. no significant problems. in the words of the chief for a big storm it wasn't much. reporting live here in santa rosa, bob redell. >> good news there. after almost four hours without power pg&e has been finally able to get power back to thousands. how is it looking there this morning? >> reporter: well, good morning. the good news, the power is back on, but at one point almost 11,000 people were without power. let's look at this map. you can see it went all -- they say the issue is likely underground equipment failure. the power was restored at 4:30 a.m. here's what it looked like

overnight. the streets of san francisco were completely black. traffic lights, no streetlights. store fronts blacked out and even big name hotels were without power. public transportation doesn't seem to be impacted. pg&e says they'll continue their investigation to determine the exact cause. reporting live in san francisco. we'll check back in with rob mayeda before we go. >> a lot of weather related issues. look at westbound 80, 4 through 9 blocked due to a crash. a lot of ponding on the roadways so we'll continue to see issues like this through the morning. a little bit of a good news as we look around san jose. what you're looking at is the back edge of the frontal boundary which is now clearing at least the better portion of the santa clara valley. but outside it's really muggy out there. we have this hawaiian air conditioning. but the heavier rain from oregon hills south, but that continues

to advance off to the south and east. so some good news there as we go through the rest of the afternoon. but we're not expecting a lot of sunshine. leftover clouds and moisture. maybe an isolated shower or two. good news for the giants game, they'll have partly cloudy skies and maybe some mist at times. sunday forecast, if you want sunshine, better news there. clearing skies and a warm day monday. next chances of rain is tuesday and thursday and much of it north of the north bay. >> oh, my gosh, look at the traffic backup because of the sigalert. you said lanes 4 to 9. >> yeah. >> wow, if you're headed out there today maybe avoid it if you can. take a different bridge. stay safe out there. >> just to remind you, the rain has passed through, but the roads are still wet. make it a safe and a great saturday. enjoy your weekend.
