12:30 am
[music playing] hi, i'm donna. and i'm adele. and we are in our home in plainfield, new jersey. donna and i met in 1997. we were married in our hearts in 2000. we were not legally married until 2013. adele is a strong person and has a lot of beliefs, strong beliefs. she wants to make a difference. is that good? - yeah. good, good, good. donna is-- she is abundant. she is present in your life, and when she's present in your life, she will do anything for you.
12:31 am
she's the backbone of this family and she's the love of my life. most days. most. [laughter] when donna and i met, we wanted to have a family. and with so many children who needed families in this country and we felt that that's what we needed to do. after long careers in social work, donna and adele decided to become foster parents and ended up fostering 14 children, eventually adopting their son, ritchie, in 2003. we didn't know what we were going into, but we knew it was a boy. and so when we walked into the room, i just looked at him and i could start crying thinking about it. he was-- i just knew he was mine and i knew i had to have him. it made me feel like i was complete. donna and adele didn't stop at changing the life of just one child. they also adopted their son aiden, who is seven,
12:32 am
and their son hunter, who is three. our family is very different. we have two moms, we have adopted siblings. but it's very loving. the energy we have within our family is very strong. we've always been very proud of who we are. and when you have children, it makes it even that more important. the dynamic with the three boys, it's like testosterone exemplified. there is a reason why people have children in their 20s. i mean, it's exhausting. raising three kids is hard work. trust me, i have three of my own and a fourth on the way. what the [inaudible] really need is a safe kitchen where they can cook, they can gather, and they can be together. in their current kitchen, it's just not up to par. the challenges in our house are-- electricity-- one. --that we don't have a lot of outlets that are functioning.
12:33 am
work. that work, right. i think our kitchen is a challenge. and that has always been. the kitchen is probably the busiest, most crowded area in the house. meaning just that there's not enough room to put things. the front of the stove fell off and shattered all over the place. the refrigerator worked, but the floor underneath it is a little bit corroded. so the refrigerator leans over a little bit. yeah. other than that, the kitchen is great. i'd love to see something good happen for my parents. after all the hard work they've done for us, i think it would be very rewarding to them to finally have the kitchen they've always wanted. it's more about something nice really happening. i think about the fact that we are very grateful-- i feel like i'm-- for what we have. so sometimes, it's hard to take something good, you know, for yourself. it would really be extraordinary, in a way,
12:34 am
for us, because we're never going to be able to do this. [music playing] [doorbell rings] what's up? [screaming] oh my god. how are you? nice to meet you guys. what are you doing here? hi buddy, how are you? hello. whoa! how are you guys doing? i'm in shock. she deserves it. - you do too! - but you do, too. i mean you-- - you do. - this is your fantasy. - no you do. no, really. it's just, it's paying it forward. you guys continue to pay it forward every day with what you do and who you are, as social workers and bringing these boys in. and i know your kitchen could use a little love. and i'm here to bring you guys as much love as i can fit through these doors, all right? it's crazy. oh my god, i know. all right, let's see what we're dealing with. and now, to get this rescue underway, we have returning "george to the rescue" alum lavette shrem on design and the one and only paul lopa as our general contractor. so paul, lavette, welcome back to the rescue. this is the family's kitchen that is
12:35 am
in dire need of some rescuing. this is a well-loved kitchen. well-loved. this has been used, abused, and i think is ready for a makeover. 100% i would really love to update this space. i mean, it's their house and there's artwork and love and attention to their personalities. and i don't want to strip that, so i want to keep their family presence there and just make it a really beautiful space. if you guys are down with it, i think we just rip it all out and start from scratch. got to go to the drawing board. this is not working because you have these appliances just stacked up on top of each other. i don't know about open concept entirely, but maybe opening it up a little bit. we can make a better flow in here by opening, maybe widening this space, evening them out a little bit. now, the plan is set. it is time to open up these walls and see what we're dealing with. so this was one of the worst things that i've seen, and one of the worst things that somebody should be living with. announcer: "george to the rescue" is sponsored in part by scotch blue painter's tape. for more information, go to scotchblue.com.
12:38 am
[music playing] here you go, boss. paul, lavette, and i came up with a great plan on what we can do with dawn and adele's kitchen. and now that we have the ladies and the kids out of the house, we can make that a reality. which means it's demo day. it's a little cloudy out, but it doesn't have to be. not with these 3m yellow safety glasses. it's a bright, sunshiny day. all right, let's start this demo. (singing) you are the sunshine in my life. [music playing] whoa! look how easy that came out. yellow glasses, yellow hammer. paul, you just chopped that thing down like paul bunyan. you're a different kind of paul with that ax in your hand. today, we're just basically going to do like a light demo, clean up the space, get rid of the cabinetry, get rid of the countertops, take all the appliances out.
12:39 am
no one would say that kitchen didn't need a rescue. the lazy susan was so lazy it wasn't working anymore. the oven was just a place where they stored pots and pans, because the door would fall off. it wasn't safe-- just bring that thing down already. oh no, do i have to come in there? oh, there we go. oh, there we go. i'm not a fan of the soffit look. i never have been. dated, right? very dated. i can see a purpose for it. there's a time and a place. this was not the time or the place. all right, buddy. we have demoed the kitchen, now it's time to take down that wall. i knew you were going to say that one. and the last rescue we did together, you kind of bested me on the whole kicking down the wall, all right? paul and i, we kick down walls. we're busting right through this wall. open this thing right up.
12:40 am
saddle you focus. it's tradition. i mean, that's our thing. what kind of kick you going with? i might just stick with the front kick. you're not going to go like side, like steven seagal? yeah! a little van damme? a little [grunts] yeah, so the last time, he didn't even penetrate the wall. i don't even think he came close to my kng fu style. you ready? they keep the hammer here just for motivation. let's do this. [music playing] yeah! [screaming] oh, look at that. it's like synchronized swimming. yeah! that's kind of right where we want it. done and done. this is my art, it's my work. they call it demo, by george oliphant. as soon as we started moving furniture around here and started exposing outlets, we realized that the electrical issues on this particular rescue
12:41 am
were going to be monumental. so this was one of the worst things that i've seen, and one of the worst things that somebody should be living with. so this is not even in the box? oh, it's in the box, but it's not in properly. right. it's not just something that like-- it's scary. it could lead to getting shocked, it could lead to a fire. announcer: "george to the rescue" is sponsored in part by 3m. for more information, go to 3mdiy.com.
12:43 am
since the onset of the drought, more than 129 million trees have died in california. pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future.
12:44 am
[music playing] we've got ourselves a major electrical situation. thankfully, we got the guys from anco electrical here. as soon as we opened up the boxes and we seen the cloth wiring, i knew it was just going to be a struggle from there. we have wires that are live, that at any moment, could cause a spark and cause a fire. the scariest part here is this was closed up, so you would have never seen this. this is something that's definitely out of date, something that's definitely got to be brought up to code today. we're starting from scratch. we're ripping out all the old like we just did and we're bringing all the wires up here. oh man, thank goodness everything worked out with electric, because we are on a very strict deadline. my wife is eight months pregnant, and i cannot have anything slowing this project down. what do you think, george, just pull it out? yeah, yeah. let's just pull that out. [music playing] so in the kitchen, we are rejiggering it a little bit. we are moving the stove to where the refrigerator was, the refrigerator to where the stove was, and the sink is staying put. it can get very confusing, and that's
12:45 am
why we've got joe from jpi plumbing here and his team to tackle it all. we're going to run the gas line over there, the new stove is going to be over there. and what we're going to do is we're also going to have a line over here for an ice maker for them. [music playing] so we're doing the kitchen, which is awesome. but when you walk in the house, you walk through the family room. and that room is dark right now and there is no light in there. so if we can tackle that room and maybe, you know, a little paint. some new furniture could really do some good stuff for that space. you've got to rip out the subfloor. you've got like cement, you've got another subfloor. all of it's got to come up. so now that i've ripped out those other floors, i'm glad we got you here, rob, and robert young flooring to install some new ones and get this whole thing uniform. i'm really liking this one right here. the dark walnut? i like it, too.
12:46 am
we have these light walls, we need some-- - dark floors. - and this would be great. if the rescue was a car, you would say that we are firing on all cylinders, because everything is done. electric, plumbing, we've got our drywall up. what paul and lavette thought was since we have this awesome barn door right here, why not put, on the inside of the door, chalkboard paint? in order to do that, you're going to have to scotch blue painter's tape. that's the way you get super sharp paint lines. look at that, huh? all right, got all of our appliances here. now, once we get our cabinets in, we'll be able to put together a kitchen. and i, for one, am a huge fan of these microwave, george. you've got kids in the house. it's ideal. sorry, hold on one sec, guys. hey, so. paul and lavette have everything dialed in. the project is going along perfectly. which is great, because my wife could really go at any moment now.
12:47 am
- hey, the baby is coming. - right now? right-- right now, right now. i've got to go, i've got to go, i get-- sorry! all right, man. wish me luck. good luck, dude, now what do we do? you get a lunch? yeah, let's get lunch. announcer: looking for more than your standard tape? scotch masking tape is the right tool for the job. scotch masking tape's versatile product line provides high adhesion on nearly all projects and services. to learn more, go to 3m.com/propainter.

12:49 am
well, we did it. we have a baby girl. ryan olivia oliphant, rue, was born five weeks early at 4 pounds, 3 ounces. just a little tyke, but she's healthy. mother, baby doing healthy. now, it's time to finish up here and get donna and adele and the kids back in their house. [music playing] wow. the cabinet man must have delivered. look at this, yeah. i really like working with paul, because along with paul comes cabinet plant. and that truly is a one-stop shop. so are you thinking this countertop, this back splash. it that the idea? and it's not just the cabinets. he helped us pick out all of our appliances, our back splash, our countertops, even the floors. we have this beautiful caesar stone countertop, it's called rugged concrete. and we have some really nice cement tile from the cement tile shop that have a nice terrazzo finish. all right, lavette.
12:50 am
i would like to take credit, but really, paul and his guys have been just killing it. he really made it all come together. and i think it was really important that even though we didn't knock down walls, to make it feel like one cohesive space. reveal, it's the reveal. let's reveal the couch. couch reveal. both: ta da! oh, that looks comfy. hey paul, i need your muscles. one, two, three, seven. whoa. you all right? that's me, i was pressing. ok, more, more, more, more, more that-- good. done. i had some pillows made by calico. they're the same fabric that's on the window treatment in the kitchen. i love the little pops of colours, and i also love what we have going on with the tile, with the back splash, with the fireplace. i really wanted to keep everything very earthy and natural, because i think in addition to light, when you have natural greens in a space, it kind of brings the outside in and it just makes you feel like you're going to breathe easier. my cabbages are going up on the wall. ok. who said a wall doesn't need a cabbage? i mean--
12:51 am
if anybody ever did say that, they were wrong. i'll tell you that much. - crazy. when i was doing some research for their space, i thought built-ins would be a great option. but you can't always spend the money on that. so i found these great bar carts, they brought in that reclaimed look. wheel them in, george. wheel them in. this is like a great way to bring in some greens. you can put books, you can put the kids toys on here. i love the idea. - tens of possibilities. - it's got a little love. you can't go anywhere without a little love. you need the love. the love is going to come over to me. [music playing] what you doing over there? there's no cookies in there. no cookies in the cookies in the cookie jar. there's no cookies in the cookie jar. i love myself a white kitchen, but i really wanted to incorporate the black and the brushed gold. and capitol lighting helped me with that, with my great pendants that are up there in the chandelier over the kitchen table. and then, hanover plumbing got me the [inaudible] faucet that i was dreaming about. i love this wall. i mean, everything about it. the reclaimed lumber that we've turned into shelves, the awesome tiles. i really liked that paul and lavette decided to leave the back wall without cabinets.
12:52 am
and you have this awesome broan hood, it really just makes the room feel so much bigger and more grandiose. remember when we got here, george, there were like pictures and paperwork, artwork. so i wanted-- i didn't want them to lose that art wall, so now they have these great little bulletin boards where they can put up all their art. all right. boom. peel this off. ta da! took that. they can color till their hearts contention. oh yeah, they can color, they can put notes in, they've got chalk. what's amazing about donna and adele is they embody what george to the rescue all about, which is making other people's lives better. now, they have a space that's totally equipped for it. that's, you know, the real pleasure of doing the show, is that we get to help people who help others. welcome home. oh my god, oh my god, are you kidding? oh god, it's gorgeous.
12:54 am
12:55 am
i'm like, who lives here? i hope i don't curse too much. look at this fireplace, dawn!. i know. it's a little brighter in here, right? a little? oh my god, it is beautiful. the living room is-- light. light, comfortable. it's a happy space. it feels like us. well, we're gobsmacked. gobsmacked, well said. oh my gosh. the kids are never coming in here. ever. the living room space will be off limits to the boys for as long as we can do it, which will probably be like 10 minutes. they're not allowed in. yeah, ever. that we'll ever yeah, we'll make them make them leave the house through the garage. - maybe when they're 20? no, maybe 30. yeah. two words. this is unbelievable, it was supposed to be the kitchen. this is the best case of collateral damage, you know? oh my god. [music playing]
12:56 am
oh my-- oh, i can't. i know, i'm say-- must be, it's going to be. this is crazy. a gas stove, thank you, god. you got your kitchen, girl. oh my-- i-- you got your kitchen, huh? i walked in and i could see the stove and the hood, which is so classy. and i hope it's not too classy for us. and then to see the back splash that matches the counters, donna, look what you've got. oh-- oh my god. that is so cool. look what you got, oh my god. and look at this. you've got drawers! the kitchen just blew me away.
12:57 am
the island, to have that space to be able to cook and bake on, i love this refrigerator. i love this refrigerator. oh, and the garbage in the drawer. i love-- and the pullup-- that is clutch. i hope we don't destroy this place. you know what? it's well-built, it's very sturdy, and it's home. and we want you guys to break it in. this whole experience has just landed on our laps. and i'm grateful for the hard work, but i'm also grateful for the great people and the kindness. that's very touching to me, [applause] it all started with paul and lavette. they were the ones who were able to create this unbelievable transformation. and it's safe to say it's a little different? just a smidge.
12:58 am
just a smidge. what you do for you community, what you do for ritchie and for your kids and for all the kids that you've helped, that's why we came through these doors. thank you. thank you. today's been amazing. it's just been amazing. i know donna is not finished reacting to it. she's slow to react to things and it's tonight that she'll probably burst out crying and be like, my kitchen. i'm not a kitchen!
