now? >> for the most part the rain is pretty much out of here but we will see spotty showers popping up for bay area today. it's going to be cool. look at these highs. we only make it around 60 degrees today. with breezy we understand. every now and then some rain dropping. it's going to feel very much like winter as we get a look at the bigger picture we can see rain through the north of us and that will bring us rain through the north bay and along the coast. i'll be tracking that. mike, you say you just missed flashing lights? >> just missed it. some flashing lights to wake folks up. just cleared before the 5:00 show. looking at a smooth drive for 582 dublin, no problems out of the altamont, green highlighting, not mine craft, registering on road weather index. didn't want to get kids excited. south bay has spring break. lighter volume for much of your commute. early, cash lines back-up at the bay bridge toll plaza.

group that created this, posing on gallop online gaming group to create this hoax. here are new details we're getting according to east bay times. this was carried out by apophis squad, hijacked domain of dallas-based company using their e-mail address to send e-mails to schools across the country including right here in the bay area. those e-mails titled student help, claiming bullied student threatening violence. schools such as emery high closing on monday. initially said the hoax was part of an online contest but east bay times reached out to a member of this apophis squad had said they did it because, quote, they had nothing better to do. the poll by the public policy inside substitute on school shootings pull up that information said 73% of adults are concerned or somewhat concerned with school shootings.

82% of public school parents are concerned or somewhat concerned. two-thirds of that group opposed arming educators in school. of course there's a lot of debate around that topic. that survey was done by phone with nearly 2,000 adults not too long after the march for life protest last month. life in emeryville pete suratos. >> thanks, pete. continuing coverage. this morning we're monitoring escalating tensions between the u.s. and russia over syria. the president has promised a missile strike any day now. this morning the president, however, scaling back on those threats. just a couple hours ago he tweeted, "never said when an attack on syria would take place. could be very soon or not so soon at all! in any event, the united states, under my administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of isis. where is our thank you america? wrote, let's be crystal clear on the scope of this mission. this will not be a mission to build a new wall. it will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life. governor brown says the troops' mission will be to combat crime. >> at 5:06, happening today san jose state student charged in two sexual assault attempts expected to appear in court. they say he repeatedly made sexual advances to male schoolmates. when they refused, wit they did say he would try to choke them. they believe he was hoping to take advantage of them. officers arrested him last month. investigators say the victims managed to fight off the attack. we've learned new details overpass about a deadly officer-involved shooting in fremont. this happened last thursday. as we reported, police shot and killed the man near a gas station on fremont boulevard

near nicollette avenue. the suspect shot at officers overnight, has been identified as nathaniel assad from oakland. the east bay times reports said fremont police will not release body camera foot aage. >> happening today come together to discuss immigration, and other policies. departments across the country are attending the conference inside oakland. taking it up a notch when it comes to going green. the transition of all ferry services to renewable diesel. it is made from what is called biomass. examples could restaurant oil waste and animal fat. already runs on renewable diesel. >> it's 5:07. we're now seeing the exact of last week's storm on the

mike traffic tease happy thursday. it's 5:13, we're starting to dry out from the rain we had overnight. as we take a live look outside in fremont, it is also chilly behind that front that moved through yesterday. we will strug toll make it up to 60 degrees today with a mix of sun and clouds and breezy winds. i'm also still tracking a chance of rain in the forecast for today. there is more rain coming down the line. we'll talk about that coming up in less than five minutes. >> we're looking at the berkeley curve. i think the camera is a little darker than it should be.

going. >> we'll sneak on their plane. >> we'll be right here. >> yes, we will. we'll also be enjoying some nice weather as we go in the day, a little cooler. starting out with clearing skies around the bay area. here is a look at what you'll feel as you step out the door. santa rosa, 36 degrees. it is chilly there. oakland the warmest now, 49, also 49 in san francisco. that's not warm at all for us. so it's going to be a cool day, mostly sunny skies and breezy winds. 60 degrees in san jose. mostly some upper 50s for the south bay. for the east bay 63 degrees in pleasanton, oakland and hayward. it's going to be cool along the coast, half moon bay, 68, 58 san mateo, 59 in the mission district and up to 0 degrees in naacp, santa rosa and novato. if you're hitting the links,

doing anything outside, it's going to be one to bundle up, 7:00 to 8:00 hour with 40s in the forecast and reaching up to 57 at 1:00, a mix of sun and clouds. i'm still tracking the chance of rain today but that chance will be very slight. much of the rain will be across the north bay and along the coast. i'm even looking at light rain moving into marin county. that's moving to the east and approaching san rafael and 101 in the next hour. we still see rain in the forecast today. very spotty showers. not everyone will see this rain. also shows the possibility it could move through parts of the east bay for the afternoon. so just keep a heads up for a. >> steve: shower that may be moving through. as we go through the long range outlook, showers moving north to south, widespread rain on monday. that could also bring more sierra snow. a break on tuesday and wednesday, for the most part, and then we'll see rain moving in late wednesday evening spoke

that we first brought to you 5:24 for you right now. an update on that military plane crash in north africa that we first brought you in breaking news yesterday here on "today in the bay." witnesses of that crash in algeria reported hearing an explosion and then seeing flames

bursting out of an engine. the plane slammed into a field. those on board that plane, more than 250 soldiers and their families. authorities are not saying if anyone survived. the cause of the crash is under investigation. >> 5:25 the u.s. navy is launching another cleanup effort at hunters point shipyard in san francisco. the navy detailed plans at a community meeting last night. it comes after the navy admitted the last contractor hired to clean up the contaminated site falsified more than 90% of its data. the company is tetratech now under investigation. >> no, this is not going to get cleaned up. they are going to continue to throw money at a problem. the navy used the shipyard from 1940 to 1974. it's where nuclear reactors and submarines and aircraft carriers were decommissioned, which is why the area is contaminated.

good morning and thank you a very good thursday morning to you at 5:30, taking a peek outside overlooking the south bay this morning, san jose, some rain fell overnight. but now that's clearing up making way for what we hope will be a very nice day. we'll check in with kari in a moment. >> good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. right now we want to head to meteorologist kari hall. kari, i think i'm happy about this. >> i'm happy, too. we're going to get some more sunshine today. it's going to be cooler, feeling more like winter across the bay area. another live look outside in san jose just before sunrise. let's go to santa teresa, you'll see some sunshine today but we will only make it up to 60 degrees today. that's cooler than normal. watching for a slight chance of rain. we had that disturbance in the front that moved through yesterday, dropped a little rain but still not completely out of

here. we'll talk about what's ahead and get a look at that weekend forecast in about seven minutes. mike is checking out a few delays. >> two unexpected delays. overall green sensors. on the peninsula, northbound 280, the crash i thought had cleared a few minutes ago actually related in three of four lanes blocked temporarily a crash and some debris reported north 280 around page mill road. light traffic but we only have one lane available just a few minutes. i'll track that. over here a few minutes. hear from chp, suspected traffic break or police activity clear up northbound 680. it's been going on a total of 20 minutes for this activity. they may be looking for something. we don't have specifics. i can just show you the slowing. prepare for that. again, should be clear soon. this one, this is not surprise, third back-up at the bay bridge toll plaza because the metering lights are on and that is tradition. back to you. >> thanks. 5:31.

happening today, a demonstration against google's massive expansion project. >> protesters say the tech company needs to make changes before moving to the city. "today in the bay" ron slater joins us with demands they are asking from google. >> this is protest from silicon valley rising. the group says it has questions that needs answers. mercury news this week said the company is close to having a site that is viable. google has been buying up properties in downtown san jose for its google village near deerden station. they have been worried it will drive up housing prices, displays low and income earners and add to congestion. silicon valley risers will add to demands at the community meeting. we're told community leaders

arrested the suspect on his run. the victim suffered minor injuries and she did get her purse back. >> it is 5:33 right now. happening today linebacker san francisco for reuben foster may learn if he will be criminally charged after his arrest earlier this year in the south bay. they arrested foster in february. he's accused of domestic violence, threats, and possession of an assault weapon. the district attorney has since been deciding whether or not to pursue charges. foster is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon. >> new this morning stanford agreed to fix title ix violations. the university reached an agreement with the education department office of civil rights. on a plog poblog post said did violations but did find policies that did not comply with federal general equity rules. we don't have specifics on the violations or cases, started after students complained. one san francisco mission

district school considering bold steps to help students who are struggling. the examiner reports horace man school is looking for funding to convert its gymnasium into overnight family shelter. estimates 64 homeless students enrolled there. >> new this morning making california's freeways safer as we look live at 101 in palo alto, interstate 880 in fremont as the morning commute gets under way. as you head out the door you may notice changes. >> along 237 and 880, the project caltrans just launched. good morning, bob. >> good morning, laura and marcus. caltrans in the process of restriping more than 17,000 miles of freeways and highways here in the golden state in an attempt to make the road safer. what the workers are doing is widening these lines that are on the road so they are easier to see. you can already see this stretch

of i-5 in central valley. if you want to take a look, the lines on the left are 4" wide and on the right the lines have been widened to 6". eventually all lines will be half a foot wide to make them more visible in the dark, rain, fog and falling snow. caltrans has also upgraded the kind of paint it uses. >> personally, i think it's a waste. >> it's been like this for god knows how long. i don't see any reason to expand it a couple inches. >> anything is better, a little bit wider? yeah, i think it would be safer. >> a good idea but i believe the money could be spent better in different ways. >> the total cost to restripe california's freeways and highways, $192 million. that's money from the recent hike in the gas tax. the restriping is taking place mostly during the nighttime. wider lanes also expected to make it easier for the autonomous cars to stay in their name. reporting live in milpitas, bob riddle, "today in the bay."

northbound 280 page mill road. i told you hoping to clear that crash and debris in the next couple of minutes. we're hearing something like 20 minutes until a tow truck can get there. that is a problem. foothill expressway through the area. light traffic. om one lane gets by past that crash. 101 is not a problem heading to or from the palo alto area. other side of the bay 880 past 92 is on the shoulder. that's better news. getting over to 680 talked about that traffic activity. police activity on the northbound side. that's a problem. let's look at the system, southbound may be presenting more of an issue. looking at that purple route from concord in toward lafayette area, 17 minutes if you get off of the freeway. if you stay on the freeway going 23 minutes. will save you five minutes right now. traffic should be cleared up hope any pretty soon. >> there we go. >> right around the corner. the weekend. yesterday telling us it was going to be a great one. >> seemed like yesterday was

monday. this week has gone by so fast. >> we thought yesterday was monday. >> right. this week is going by fast at least for me and it's going to be a great weekend. we are looking at a lot of sunshine, upper 60s. bay 74 and inland area 76. perfect saturday. by sunday more clouds moving in and we'll start to see rain lurking from north to south as we go into the afternoon. expect some showers to wrap up the weekend. i am going to be seeing autism speech walk on saturday in san jose. that's at history park and you still have time to sign up. we are going to have some nice weather. starts out cool, low 50s during registration. by the time the walk starts, it's going to be very comfortable, some upper 50s to low 60s and mostly sunny skies as it warms up. then we also have berkeley bay festival happening at shoreberg park. that on saturday will also be a nice, sunny cool weather in the mid-60s throughout the day.

mike traffic tease we're coming up on 5:44. if you're stepping out the door, a cool start. wet roads and rain still left over from the overnight showers we had as we do throughout the day in san jose. it's going to be a cool one, much cooler than normal, starting out at 48 at 7:00 and some upper 50s throughout the day with some sunshine, a few clouds mixing in, and also a slight chance of rain for parts of the bay area. we'll talk about where we may see some rain and also hang out for five minutes we'll take another look at that weekend foreca forecast. great news, activity cleared 680, clear of distractions. we'll track that north bay 101 traditional start just before 6:00 we're seeing more traffic. >> picking up out there. thanks so much. 5:44 right now.

new this morning, san ramon police looking for this man. take a look. they say these surveillance images show him committing armed robbery at a bank and local credit union. that's all police are saying so far. it is likely they know who he is because they also released an identification photo. new details released in investigation mysterious and deadly crash in mendocino county. one of the mothers who died when the suv plunged off the cliff sent a text to a friend days before the wreckage was discovered. the friend said she received the message from cheryl hart at 3:00 a.m. it said she was so sick she might have to go to the hospital. emergency call records show the friend then called police to report she had not heard from heart for two days. hours later the family's suv was discovered at the pobottom of a cliff. >> 5:45, details on the effort to streamline responses to mass shootings as well as other large scale disasters in the bay area. the district attorney is set to

here you're going to have still a slight chance of rain. here is a look at highs today, reaching near 60 degrees. once again that crash. getting dressed in the south baya look outside. san jose right now a chilly start. we are feeling some 40s out there so you do need a nice, warm jacket. probably some long sleeves. you'll be comfortable wearing jeans today. then i wanted to show you the big picture of radar and satellite still showing some rain just to the north of us. very light and spotty. the front moved well off to the south and east. back behind that we're still getting a weak disturbance that's going to bring in some spotty showers. seeing the rain moving across the north bay and right along the coastline, i think this is where we'll have our highest chance of rain today. some of the models showing the rain could start going once again for northern sonoma county, mendocino as well as lake county. right at 8:30 to 9:00 this

morning but there still will be a few of those quick moving cells moving through parts of the peninsula. even shows a slight chance of rain for the east bay. i don't think we'll see much of that across south bay today and overall mostly sunny skies. we dry out for a couple of days. then as we go into saturday and sunday, mostly dry until sunday evening when the next system will be moving in also bringing some snow to the sierra. widespread rain on monday spoke tuesd -- into tuesday, then a break. it stays very unsettled over the next few days. we'll have temperatures up and down. starts out cool and warms up for the weekend as that sun breaks out and cools down again with more showers early this week. the area can expect more wild temperature swings going from low 60s today to mid-70s by the weekend, then low 60s early next week. now mike, you're tracking the traffic alert. >> they just changed status, they being chp, changed stat taos traffic alert or sig alert

civil rights attorney )ben crump ) and a te 5:55. happening today civil rights attorney ben crump and his team of lawyers representing the family of an unarmed police shooting victim will announce a lawsuit in houston. also representing the family of stephon clark shot and killed in sacramento by police. today's lawsuit stems from a houston case. the 34-year-old man who had history of memorial illness was walking in the intersection at his parents -- with his pants around his ankles. a video shows a deputy arrived to the scene and shooting that man moments after.
