today? >> it's going to be cooler, all because we had that front that moved through yesterday that brought us rain. you're still seeing that as you walk out the door, seeing wet roads but clearing skies. a live look outside in san francisco this morning. as we clear out, everything nice and fresh. there could be lingering showers for the north bay. watching some of that rain in the afternoon could move into the peninsula as well as east bay but not everyone is going to see showers. it's going to be much cooler with sunshine but still a little unsettled today. we'll talk about the weekend forecast in just a few minutes. mike starts out with the traffic alert. >> that's right, kari, and not in a usual suspect area. that's why we have you here, bring unexpected, whes going on with the rest of the commute. northbound 280 jammed up. only one lane opened for half hour after a clash and debris. a sig alert. they say major impact, also say it will take a while. waiting for a couple of tow

trucks. foothill expressway take you past the area, so will 101 if you want to take that to peninsula, cross over 380 or farther south through the woodside area. that's looking pretty good. good news traffic relatively light through the south bay, 101 coming off 680 and around 680 coming around the bend area, we are following reports of some sort of roadside fire there. a tree off the freeway. i don't see anything on this camera sweeping around. this is 101 with the back-up we showed you on the map. 680, 280. i don't see it here. following that activity with chp as well. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:01. new morning an apparent highway shooting in contra costa county. we are working to figure out what happened overnight along highway 4 in the east bay. a brand-new video shows police activity near port chicago exit. separately the video shows an suv being towed into the chp lot. there seems to be a bullet hole

in the side. in recent years there have been more than 100 shootings on east bay freeways. we have a call into chp to get more details. >> calls on the school threat hoax that prompted school closures in the east bay earlier this week. we're learning about the group that may be behind the threat. today in the bay with who is claiming responsibility. pete. >> good morning to you, laura, the new details we're getting a swiss cyber group. in order to pull off the hoax they posed as a gaming company. according to "east bay times," it was apophis squad, an online gaming company using e-mail address to send e-mails claiming

violence on schools across the country. schools like emery high. they reached out to a member of the squad who said they did it, quote, because they had nothing better to do. a new policy, we want to show you that information, 3% of adults are concerned or somewhat are concerned or somewhat concerned with school shootings. 82% of public school parents are concerned or somewhat concerned. two-thirds of that group opposed arming educators in school. the survey done by phone with nearly 2,000 adults not too long after the march for life protest last month. live in emeryville, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. happening today at 6:03, a san jose state student charged in two sexual assault attempts

expected to appear in court. they say he repeatedly made sexual advances to male schoolmates. when they refused, witnesses say he would try to choke them. they believe he was hoping to take advantage of them. officers arrested him last month. investigators say the victims managed to fight off the attack. we've learned new details overpass about a deadly officer-involved shooting in fremont. this happened last thursday. as we reported, police shot and killed the man near a gas station on fremont boulevard near nicollette avenue. the suspect shot at officers overnight, the suspect was identified as 18-year-old man from oakland. the "east bay times" reports said fremont police will not release body camera footage. >> happening today bay area police chiefs will come together to discuss hot button topics. they include immigration enforcement, community relations and use of force policies. leaders of both san francisco and oakland police will be there. departments around the country are attending that conference in

oakland. new this morning president trump thanking governor jerry brown in a tweet saying quote, california governor jerry brown is doing the right thing and sending the national guard to the border. thank you, jerry. good move for the safety of our country. brown, however, says his motive to deploy the national guard are different than the president's. in a letter to the department of homeland security mr. brown wrote, let's be crystal clear on the scope of this mission. this will not be a mission to build a new wall. it will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life. governor brown says the troops' mission will be to combat crime. can have 6:05. live, monitoring tensions between u.s. and russia in the wake of suspected chemical attack in syria. president trump tweeted early this morning saying in part, quote, never said when an attack on syria would take place. could be very soon or not so

man for extra time to get to the sierra. we're still seeing the storm system across the region. we can see the clouds as we take a live look outside in san jose, even though the rain has moved on. as we get a look at the day for campbell we'll be at 52 degrees. overall a fairly clear day. normally we're up to 69 degrees. we'll only make it up to 60 today. there's still in parts of the bay area a slight chance of rain. i think the highest chance will be north bay from santa rosa northward. a look at our highs once again only reaching upper 50s to low 60s feeling much more like winter today. but we do have some major changes on the way as we head sp into the weekend. as it dries out we'll talk about that. also a look at today's temperature trend for palo alto coming up. mike has been running traffic alerts going on. >> i want to make sure they had not made any progress. i guess that's a negative. we want to make sure we still have the delay. give you alternate north 280, this the problem.

rafael. i wanted to show you this view because this is where i'll be watching out for the possibility of some rain later today. the morning drive is looking good but you may have to crank up the heater, a chilly start, 40 at 4:00, upper 50s at lunchtime. our highs today well below normal. only up to 59 in santa rosa, 59 in oakland and 61 in san jose. as under the circumstances a look at the forecast on the bottom of the screen, some rain farther down the line and temperatures going up and down. you need to make sure you check in every day to know how to prepare for that day. today is still looking a little unsettled as we track a little light rain across the north bay farther to the north and also some chilly temperatures. getting a closer look, everything is nice and quiet and dry, get a chance to dry out from rain that quickly rolled through yesterday with that cold front. even though that the front is out of the bay area, we have a slight chance of rain behind

novato pet owner. 6:24 right now on this thursday morning. so nbc bay area responds to. >> her cat, a big medical bill clawing into her wallet. nbc responds to the rece crew. >> this is fred. a vet said 1212 of his teeth had to be pulled, a surgery that would cost more than $1500. laura explored whether pet insurance could help scratch down the cost. laura said she called nationwide insurance. she said a telephone sales agent said the vet bill would be covered even though the bad teeth were a pre-existing condition. laura went ahead and bought the insurance and fred had the surgery successfully. then a $1700 bill arrived. laura said she asked nationwide

why it didn't cover the vet bill, and it cited the pre-existing condition, which she thought was covered. she felt cheated. she was stuck with that $798 bill so she contacted us, we contacted nationwide. it said a sales agent clearly stated pre-existing conditions are ineligible for coverage. we asked nationwide to hear the recording of laura's conversation. it did not provide the tape but said later on it reviewed the call and found that laura's claim was now eligible for coverage. nationwide paid the $1798. laura said she is so thrilled. she told us fred is doing just fine. pet insurance isn't too much different from human health insurance, there are lots of terms and conditions even though it involves a cat. you've got to look for those exclusions and exemptions. you have to read the fine print in the pet policy the same you do in your people

>> thank you. police arrested reuben foster in february accused of domestic violence, threats and possession of an assault weapon. the district attorney has since been deciding whether or not to pursue charges. foster is expected to appear in court this afternoon. the u.s. navy launching another cleanup effort at hunters point shipyard in san francisco. the navy detailed its plans at a community meeting last night. this comes after the navy admitted last contractor hired to clean the area contaminated site falsified more than 90% of its data. the company is tetratech, now under investigation. some are losing confidence in the entire process. >> no, this is not going to get cleaned up. they are just going to continue to throw money at the problem. >> they used it from 1970 to

president obama for saying all those fools who want to attack syria, u.s. lost vital element of surprise. so stupid, could be a disaster. so as you pointed out, president trump is boxed in. he promised a military strike. he can't back down from those. but announcing the strikes violated his own rule of not announcing imminent military action so they have to be delayed. the president ordered one other military action in his presidency we know about, 56 cruise missiles fired from navy ships exactly one year ago against syrian airstrip. now, keep in mind, in the midst of all this the united states doesn't have secretary of state. rex tillerson is long gone. today the senate foreign relations committee will begin questioning mike pompeo for the role. he's the current director of the cia, though he hasn't had that job long, 444 days. before that he was a congressman from kansas. so we examine what's going on in washington every day. you can follow me on twitter.

let me know what you think. i'm @scott mcgrew. >> thanks a lot, scott. 6:46 right now. missing a connecting flight may be a headache but for two women it really changed their lives. 25-year-old samantha snipes was eight months' pregnant and had missed her connection. she ended up sitting next to 42-year-old phipps on another flight. she noticed she was nervous, started talking to her, trying to ease the anxiety a little bit. during the conversation snipes mentioned she was considering putting her baby up for adoption because of some family problems. temple didn't have any children and eventually said she could don't that baby. >> i thought, she could always say no. but she didn't have a plan. maybe this was divine and that's why i'm supposed to be here. >> well, the two parted ways. but three days later they actually talked on the phone after snipes baby was born. phipps went to the hospital.

when snipes saw how happy she was, she decided to give that baby up for adoption. the baby is now their 18-month-old. the two live close to each other in north carolina. they are considering writing a book about the misconnection that changed their lives. that's a remarkable, beautiful story. >> it really is. >> missed connection, that was a made connection. >> that book could happen several ways. >> god puts people in certain places at certain times. wow. >> love that story. okay. you're going to love this weather, too. as we go into today, sunshine to start out. it will be cool but then warms up over the next couple days. we havay consolidated front you could feel as you get ready to step out the door. live outside in san francisco, it is all clear now. going to bundle up with upper 40s and only making it into the

50s with breezy winds and sunshine. as we get a look at high temperatures today, this is a little more like winter, not spring around the bay area. only reaching low 60s as you get dressed in the south bay you can see that sun coming through the blinds. it's going to be a day you have to wear some layers from the jacket to long sleeves. also some pants. then we can shed some of those layers throughout the weekend as it warms up. i'm still tracking unsettled weather. still seeing rain farther to the north of us even though the cold front moved well east there's still lingering light showers moving through. the highest chance of rain today will be in the north bay and also along the coast. i've seen a couple of these showers along the coastline today and that's exactly what the computer models are plotting as we go into the rest of the morning and early afternoon. most of us won't see this rain. as it moves through the north bay quick moving showers, also shows the possibility that some of them could fire up over the hills over the east bay and then move out as we head closer to

sunset. as the skies clear, a cool night. over the next few days looking at dryer weather warming up. another cold front starts to make its way into the bay area by sunday evening. widespread rain monday, also sierra snow. then drying out for tuesday and part of wednesday before the next system moves in. we have a lot of unsettled weather up and down. starts out with our temperatures 58 degrees in san francisco, 68 by saturday, cooling off as more rain moves in early next week. you can still see the roller coaster weather for inland areas as well. just make sure you check in early to know how to prepare for the day because it will be changing day by day. as we head to mike you're using ways to get drivers to work. >> an hour of back-up earlier, things much calmer on the roadways. that's weird to see closer to 7:00. we're looking toward the south

video shows an suv towed into chp lot. take a look here. there appears to be a bullet hole in the side. chp officers have not said exactly what happened. in recent years there have been more than 100 shootings on east bay freeway. >> san jose university student charged in two sexual assault attempts due in court. police say he made repeated sexual advances to schoolmates. when victims refused, witnesses say he tried to choke them. he was arrested last month. victims managed to fight off the attacks. new overpass police have identified the man had was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in fremont. a man was killed near a gas station last week on fremont boulevard and nicollette avenue. police say the suspect shot an officer before he was killed. officers say he was identified as 18-year-old nathaniel prasada from oakland. an update on the military

plane crash in north africa that we first property you as breaking news yesterday on "today in the bay." it happened in algeria, more than 250 people on board were killed. they were soldiers and their families. witnesses reported hearing an explosion and then seeing flames bursting out of an engine. the plane then slammed into that field. authorities are not saying if anyone survived. the cause of the crash is under investigation. happening today a protest against google's massive expansion project in downtown san jose. activists say the expansion will drive up housing costs. we're told protesters will present a list of demands outside google's headquarters in mount view at 11:00 this morning. google's proposed campus expected to be five times the size of valley fair mall. >> looking live in milpitas at one of the bay area's busiest roadways, this 237 and 880, one of the many spots getting wide lanes. caltrans crews are widening
