potential payouts to people who allegedly had damaging information about then-candidate trump. and, this morning, the infamous "access hollywood" tape is under new scrutiny. this morning, new bombshell allegations surrounding president donald trump. overnight, the "new yorker" and "associated press" reporting yet another instance of trump associates appearing to pay people off to squash negative claims about mr. trump while he was running for president. eight months before american media inc., the company that owns the "national inquirer," paid $150,000 to former playboy model, karen mcdougal, who said she had an affair with donald trump, which the white house denies. a $30,000 payout was made to a former doorman at one of the trump's new york city buildings. as it had done with mcdougle, there was a contract that prevents him from going public with the story that might hurt

mr. trump's presidential campaign. the allegation? the doorman passed on another salacious allegation involving the president and another woman, a former employee, dating back to the 1980s. "new yorker" uncovered no evidence that it was true, nor did the "ap." the payment is significant, because it shows the pattern of buying and burying stories that could be damaging to trump's campaign. a process known as catch and kill. nbc news reached out to thewhit. no comment yet. we also reached out to ami. they decided not to run the story because they believe the doorman story was untrue and released him from his contract. this comes as a hot mike moment moves back into the spotlight. >> need tic-tacs in case i start kissing her. >> reporter: nbc news learning fbi investigators who entered the offices of michael cohen were seeking information about a range of topics, including any communication

between the two men related to the infamous 2005 "access hollywood" video. >> grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: "access hollywood" is an nbc/universal program. the warrant mentions president trump's name several times, according to sources familiar with the matter. fbi investigators were also looking for documents related to those alleged payments to porn star stormy daniels and former "playboy" model karen mcdougal. both women claim they had sex with mr. trump. the white house repeatedly denied that. the payments could be campaign finance violations. cohen spoke with donnie deutsche who shared part of the conversation on msnbc. >> i'd rather jump out of a building than turn on donald trump. he has a fierce, fierce loyalty. >> reporter: now, that investigation into michael cohen stemmed from a referral from special counsel robert mueller. this morning, president trump is lashing out at a "new york

times" report, stating he seriously considered firing mueller back in december. tweeting, quote, if i wanted to fire robert mueller in december, as reported by the failing "new york times," i would have fired him. just more fake news from a biased newspaper. hoda, savannah? >> kristen welker, thanks. staying on politics, we move to the fallout over speaker of the house paul ryan and his decision to retire at the end of his term. the surprise announcement leading to a leadership battle for republicans. overnight the white house released this photo of the president, house speaker ryan and other republican leaders giving the thumbs up. two people in the photo, kevin mccarthy, and louisiana congressman, steve scalise, are said to be the leading contenders to replace ryan as house speaker. ryan says he will serve until january, which would mark 20 years in congress for him. he says he is returning home to wisconsin to spend more time with his children. we should mention, we have a program note. an exclusive interview tomorrow with the man who replace -- that ryan replaced as speaker of the house, john boehner will be here. what does he think of trump's washington?

does he think republicans are going to hold on to their majority in the house this fall? we'll get the former speaker's thoughts tomorrow morning on "today." also, missouri's embattled governor is on the defense and facing new calls to resign. this in the wake of a newly released report on the sex scandal that threatens to end his political career. here is nbc's blake mccoy. >> reporter: this morning, missouri governor eric greitens remains defiant in the wake of a scathing new report outlining in detail an extramarital affair the year before he was elected. >> let's call this what it is. a political witch hunt. >> reporter: a bipartisan investigation found the woman overall credible in her claims that include sexual violence and blackmail. saying, in part, she felt coerced, maybe, into giving him oral sex. in a subsequent encounter, she says greitens slapped her. i felt like he was trying to claim me, the report reads. the slap did not leave a mark but was jarring. it wasn't sweet and gentle.

it was forceful. greitens says the affair was consensual and denies any violence. >> the testimony outlined in the report is beyond disturbing. >> reporter: that is missouri's speaker of the house, a fellow republican. democrats going even further. >> we just saw a governor that took absolutely no responsibility for anything at all. it was an absolute disgrace. he was absolutely dishonorable. it is time for him to resign. >> reporter: now, growing calls for impeachment. greitens is set to stand trial in st. louis next month for felony invasion of privacy after allegedly trying to blackmail the woman with a naked photograph, something he also denies. a lawyer for the woman's ex-husband has provided audio he says is a secretly recorded conversation with her. we've altered her voice. >> i saw a flash through the blindfold, and he said, you're never going to mention my name, otherwise, there will be

pictures of me everywhere. >> reporter: adding. >> he said, you're not going to mention my name, are you? he asked me again. i just said, no. >> reporter: he equated his troubles to those being faced by president trump. >> smearing, lying and attacking people who want to change how things are done is wrong in washington and it is wrong in missouri. >> reporter: at that trial next month, greitens says the public will learn the truth. for "today," blake mccoy, nbc news. bill cosby will be back in a pennsylvania courtroom today following an intense day of testimony during his sexual assault retrial. three prosecution witnesses took the stand. they portrayed cosby as using alcohol and pills to incapacitate them and molest them. the 83-year-old is accused of aggravated sexual assault. prosecutors accuse cosby of drugging and assaulting andrea constand, a former temple university employee, in his philadelphia home in 2004. cosby repeatedly denied all of the allegations against him.

marked by controversy. in march, this fatal crash in tempe, arizona, caused uber to suspend testing of its self-driving car program. our hearts go out to the victim's family. we're fully cooperating with tempe police, uber said in a statement. that incident, just the most recent in a series of setbacks for the company over the past year and a half. in february 2017, former engineer susan fowler posted an essay, detailing alleged sexual harassment that she says was ignored by uber executives. the resulting investigation led to more than 20 firings and called for the company to review and reallocate founder trevor kalanick's responsibilities. >> you dropped the prices. >> yes. >> weeks later, kalanick was caught on tape, arguing with an uber driver over pay. >> some people don't like to take responsibility. >> [ bleep ]. >>al nick later apologized to the driver and the company. by nojune, shareholders pressur

him into stepping down. since taking over, dara khorsrowshahi talked about changes. they talk about safety features, allowing riders to share where they are during a trip. >> by using the system and getting access to your exact location, they can find you much faster. >> just this week, uber launched a new version of the app for drivers to improve the experience behind the wheel. >> we get it all the time on the rider side. i think we have to connect more on the driver side, as a team and as a company. >> uber's new ceo, dara khorsrowshahi, is joining me. did you take an uber over? >> i walked over. it was convenient. >> oh, okay. you told the truth. all right. there's a lot to talk about. facebook has been in the news. mark zuckerberg testifying on capitol hill this week. facebook, your fellow silicon valley company, facing a crisis.

do you look at it and go, oh, but for the grace of god , go i. >> it shows the challenges of technology getting into everyday life and the responsibilities that come with it. early on, the companies were idealistic for the right reasons. we're building platforms. with the platforms, good will come. people will do good things on platforms. the fact is, human beings are sometimes good and sometimes not. i think that silicon valley is understanding that with building these platforms comes a responsibility to make sure that those platforms are being used for good. and the old days are over, you have to take this responsibility seriously and invest behind it. >> you mentioned the old days are over. there's a lot of talk about regulation and whether the data companies should be regulated. i mean, do you welcome regulation? are you irritated with facebook for kind of getting everyone's attention and now there's a lot of pressure to put more

regulation on the companies? >> i welcome regulation. regulation has been a part of uber's life. we've been part of the transportation authority, so we make sure we work with every local city regulator to follow the rules. >> you do now. in the old days, they didn't, right? >> well, they didn't in the old days. largely, we did. listen, we were not perfect. any time you're growing as fast as you're growing -- and it is not an excuse -- sometimes you get things wrong. our intent now is to get things right. we're partnering with regulators. in addition to running the background checks we have to on drivers, we're introducing a technology that continuously monitors any offenses so we have essentially real time data on our drivers. it is something we don't have to do but we've chosen to do. >> it is interesting. there's two sides of it. there is a use of data that seems to be a positive. obviously, uber gets an incredibleab amount of data of s customers, where you live, where you're coming and going. are you confident uber has data

secured? >> i'm confident we're doing everything we can. i'm confident we're investing very aggressively. it is one of the areas of greatest growth in investment in the company. you can never be too sure of yourself because if you're too sure of yourself, that's when someone strikes. we continuously invest in data, making sure that it is secure, it's an arms race. what i can say is that we're using your data for you, to make your experience better. we don't sell the data or try to monetize it. the use of the data is for you. knowing where your home is, where your work is, et cetera, to make sure the service is as best as it can be for you. >> uber has been testing self-driving cars. obviously, there has been an awful incident in tempe, arizona, where a woman lost her life, a pedestrian, hit by one of uber's test cars. >> yes. >> what has your investigation determined about this? was the driver, the test driver, at fault? is uber at fault? >> what happened was an absolute

tragedy. we're doing two things. first of all, we're working with authorities at hand. ntsb, ntsa, they are the professionals in terming who is at fault. we don't want to get in their way. we're getting them all the data necessary so that they can make the determination of exactly what happened and why. secondly, i am undergoing a top to bottom audit of our safety practices, our safety drivers, training, et cetera, software, so i can be satisfied that when we put our fleet out there -- and right now, the fleet is grounded -- it'll be as safe an environment as possible. >> i want to get to the announcements you have today, but are you committed to self-driving cars as a part of uber? or does a part of you think, this part of the business can be left to someone else? >> we're committed. ultimately, self-driving cars will be safer than mau mhumans. right now, they're learning. they're student drivers. you need a safety driver.

when the student driver graduates, it'll be safer than humans. >> let's talk about the culture of uber. there was an uber engineer in the piece who said it was full of sexual harassment. this was before your time, in fairness. there was an independent report. according to the "new yorker," it read like something out of "animal house," the way the culture was at uber. is it different now? have you been able to rid the company of the last vestiges of that? >> it is night and day. i sat down in my first day, and i read that report. it was tough reading. but the folks who are at the company now are determined to change, have changed. i think there's a saying, never let a good crisis go to waste. we haven't. one of the first things we did as a leadership team is to change the company's fundamental culture. we always do the right thing now. that includes how we treat our employees internally, holding people accountable, as well as our partners like the driver

partners we offer in the cities. >> talk to me about some of the new things. one that grabbed my eye, you'll have an emergency button on uber. it'll directly connect you to 911? >> 2018 for us is standing for safety. we have a 911 button so you can get connected the instant you want to. there is an exciting pilot we're running with denver. your location information is immediately shared with 911 so the operator knows exactly where you are and can help you as quickly as possible. we know that the faster help comes, the better the outcomes. we want to continue investing in that regard. we've also announced that jay johnson, a former secretary of homeland security, preeminent security expert, will be chairing our safety council to help us get better in this regard. >> you're improving background checks for drivers. >> we're going to get dara, goo have. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. the most decorated olympian of all time, michael phelps, is

sold. the latest is "at my table," a celebration of home cooking. so many books and ideas. good to see you. >> lovely to be back. >> if you are a greedy person, you think about what do eat. >> what was it, when you think about this book and the idea for -- what was your culinary experience like at home? >> well, actually, you know, we were really a food-obsessed family when i was growing up. in a time when food in britain maybe wasn't so good. you know, my mother had, you know, learned in italy and france, and she was a very impatient tempered but good cook. it is a good way to learn. just getting the food out fast. >> get in there. >> yeah. >> how are things across the pond? royal wedding. our whole show's going there. we're excited to be there. is it a fever pitch? >> i think it's more a fever pitch here. >> true. here at the "today" show maybe. what are you making for us?

>> queen of puddings. it's an old fashioned dessert. like so many old fashioned recipes, it is about using up things, and this is bread. normally, you use stale bread. this is the mary antoinette of puddings because i'm using brioche. you want your stale bread. you can just, you know, put it in a low oven. >> did you toast this a little bit? >> you can leave it on a rack or low oven. it is not even as far as toasted. crush it into crumbs. i use a processor. this is that there. >> did you use a processor on this? >> i did. you don't have to. obviously, when they started making this, there wasn't even, you know, electricity. >> right. >> okay. this is how my mother used to grease a dish, with an old butter wrapper. >> don't waste anything. >> i keep them in the fridge like this.

>> good tip right there. >> here, we like a custard base. you have four eggs. these are the yolks. milk, butter, and i like lemon zest, vanilla and a tiny bit of sugar. shouldn't be too sweet. you have a sweetness there. here, these are the yolks. >> just the yolks are there. >> do you want -- don't hold it. >> okay. well, too late. >> i'll do it. >> helping you is the most important thing. >> it's fine. >> did your mother make this dish? >> we didn't eat desserts at home. >> why? >> because my father didn't like them. actually, we didn't, you know -- >> that's interesting. >> old fashioned. that's the old fashioned way of planning your cooking. i wouldn't be like that. >> we added the egg yolks. we are just pouring it over. >> on top of the bread. >> let it soak up for ten minutes, which is why you want it stale. i mean, if you like it sort of
