livermore. mid 40s for the south bay. here's a live look outside in san jose. no issues as you get ready to hit out. make sure you're dressed appropriately as we get a look at our temperature trend for today we'll be in the mid-50s to start at 8:00 and then some upper 60s later today. now mike, you're checking on the drive. >> most of the drive is great but we do have slowing out of the altamont and there may be a new fender bender on 205. i'll let you know if it's a major issue for folks towards the commute in livermore. thr through sunol, reports of a crash sounds like the same incident approaching highway 84. be careful through the area, overall traffic is light. here's the berkeley curve with no delays or backup at the bay bridge. >> we could expect to hear more today, get an update in fact on the ongoing search for a missing southern california family. it comes after a grim discovery of debris and personal items in a mendocino river.

bob redell joins us, where the family was supposed to arrive but didn't. we could learn pivotal information today we understand about the search. >> reporter: that's what we expect. good morning to you, laura. in seven hours the medocino county sheriff's office will hold a news conference to we assume confirm what happened to the family who were supposed to arrive last friday, a week ago and never arrived. the father and mother, 12-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter were on a family road trip from portland oregon to san jose when they disappeared. the fear is that heavy rain swept away the family as they travelled in their maroon honda pilot. searches did find parts of that same suv. this is part of the eel river. personal belongings were found

but searchers were yet to find any bodies. they were aware a car became submerged during the heavy rains but too dangerous for authorities to attempt to rescue. we believe they were going to visit a relative here in san jose before heading back to their own home in santa clair rita, southern california. bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:02. developing news out of washington this morning. we are getting a peek into the firing of former fbi director james comey from comey himself. excerpts from his book have been released. here's a sneak peek at what we learned. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: yeah, some explosive characterizations of president trump here by the fbi director that he fired. nothing from the white house yet but the republican party is out with a pretty elaborate website, refuting those allegations and questioning comey's credibility.

>> the book is called a higher loyalty, former fbi director james comey reveals new details about his firings and he says then homeland security security john kelly was so disgusted he offered to quit. and he confirmed president trump demanded loyalty at a private dinner. that led to the president suggesting he taped the meeting and this response to congress. >> i've seen the tweet about tapes, i hope there are tapes. >> the president later admitted there were no tapes. the book comey calls the president untethered to the truth, unethical, ego driven and operating like a mob boss. >> i think there's a nars six that i find troubling but can't disagree with his fundamental opinion of the president. >> he said the trump transition team was more interested in how to spin information than learning about the threat from russia. and for the first time, comby e re -- comey very veels the

government had classified information casting down on l loretta lynch in the clinton e-mail investigation. it is 5:04. no decision on syria, that's the latest word from the white house. defense secretary jim mattis is urging president trump to be cautious in responding to the alleged chemical gas attack on civilians. in the meantime, nbc news learned of new evidence that showed chlorine gas and nerve agent were used. one source says the u.s. government is confident the dictator was behind the horrific attack. nikki haley says the u.s. has enough proof. happening today, troubled former football star aldon smith is due back in court. deputies arrested him last friday after he showed up to receive an alcohol monitor with a potentially deadly 4.0 blood alcohol level. he'll be in court for his domestic violence case and

likely receive permission to enter a substance abuse facility. las vegas seems to be locking in financing to complete the raiders new stadium in time for the 2020 season. according to the review journal, the financing sold out in less than two hours and they approved the debt service and groundwork for its own annual budget. crews expected to start pouring the foundation in next few weeks. 5:05. owners of the apartment complex demolished on an eroding cliff in pacifica are settling $1.5 million penalty. it has to do with a stairwell that led to the beach. the owners of 1001 and 101 apartment s built the stairwell poorly which is why it collapsed in 2016 during storms. while reconstructing the stairwell, crews blocked access to the public beach. happening now, dangerous surf along our coastline.

the weather might be heating up this weekend but those waves are expected to be treacherous. >> heed the warnings, san francisco fire department warning everyone planning to head to the beach, don't turn your back on the waves. pete suratos is live at one of the most dangerous beaches in the country when it comes to sneaker waves. what do people need to look out for, pete? >> reporter: good morning to you. those sneaker waves can sneak up on you jumping over rocks and getties and that's why the ocean beach is one of the most dangerous beaches in froblly all of the nation and why you see these signs out here that say be careful of the rip currents, especially as we'll see more and more head to the beach as the weather gets better. i want to jump into important tips that we're getting from san francisco fire, they usually put this out as we approach summer. now one of the tips they put out if they are in ocean beach, swimming in general is strongly discouraged. you never want to turn your back on the ocean and be careful when

you're wading in the water. as i mentioned, those rip current, the sign i showed you, plenty of dangers there. you want to stay calm, don't fight it. swim parallel to the shore and wave your hands for help. some think these warning signs don't go far enough. in a study done in our own investigative unit, there were 11 deaths all together at all san francisco beaches since 1997. four of them at ocean beach in 2016, more than 430 people have been rescued over the time period and no life guards are on duty here or at life guard towers excuse me, only national park service beach patrol rangers and usually in two pickup trucks with two rescue swimmers in each and there have also been 2500 warnings to would be swimmers in 2016 alone. taking you back out here live, we're looking at the rip current sign and federal officials are taking a closer look at the sign as a result of the story done for our investigative unit.

or pleasanton but it's farther south on the 680 drive. we have mostly green, little slowing and even that's getting better out of the altamont. southbound 680 where we have reports of a crash that might be affecting your slow lanes. the speeds haven't shown slowing over the past 10 to 15 minutes but we're watching that activity for chp. moving smoothly through dublin and livermore and out of the altamont corridor, those crews are clearing from the overnight road work there and north bay -- i promised you this look earlier last report but it's the same right now. very clear, novato down to the golden gate bridge. back to you. >> coming up next on quts today in the bay, another expansion plan in the works in the south bay. a project moving forward in downtown san jose. and you know those people who made a lot of money on bitcoin, a lot of them didn't know about capital gains and tax day is coming.

coming up on 5:13 on your friday morning. we start out with clear skies and some fairly cool temperatures heading out the door. let's go to evergreen, it's going to be 45 degrees at 7:00 and warming up into the low 60s by noon today we're hitting the upper 60s and low 70s which was about normal but it's going to warm up even more tomorrow. we'll look at those numbers and also places you may be heading for the weekend coming up in less than five minutes. a live look at the golden gate bridge, a smooth drive. 101 from here into san mateo moves smoothly as well, a light build to the commute. we have one issue in the tri-valley. >> it's 5:13, local companies making news, tesla was removed from the ntsb investigation into the safety of tesla cars after the company spoke about the latest deadly accident out of

turn. debuted on the nyse yesterday, had a nice pop. here are the folks from san mateo ringing the opening bell. futures call for a positive open again this morning. reports say president trump is interested in getting back into the trans pacific partnership, tpp, rejoining the tpp if we can, would actually fit in with the president's strategy. the tpp was set up to reduce china's economic influence in the world. all of these countries are in the agreement and china is not. this is intentional. we teamed up against china. but mr. trump pulled us out of the tpp the day after taking office. other news almost tax day. people who made money on bitcoin may be in some financial trouble. there's a guy on reddit, don't know his real name but he's an office assistant, he turns out he bought bit coin sold at the peak and made $125,000.

live look outside in emeryville. we start with clear skies and chilly temperatures, it's going to warm up nicely today. we talked about getting out of town if you're going to the giants game in san diego, at first pitch, 69 degrees, sunshine. but you do not have to jump on an airplane or have a long car ride. you can watch it here on nbc bay area. we're going to have that game on tv tonight. as you stay at home and watch it, you can open up the windows and doors, we're going to have beautiful weather today in gilroy to 73 degrees. at 71 degrees in morgan hill. a high of 71 in danville today and 67 degrees in oakland and 59 degrees in half moon bay. san mateo, 65. and san francisco also reaching 65 in the mission district. north bay up to 74 degrees in santa rosa as we enjoy our sunshine, there will be some changes heading into the end of the weekend until then we'll

have an all clear skies and warming temperatures and then we start to see the clouds and rain moving in for the north bay by early afternoon on sunday. some scattered showers off and on on monday and we'll also bring sierra snow and dry out on tuesday afternoon into wednesday but then another system will be approaching. we're looking at the possibility of getting some pretty decent amounts of rain at least a quarter to possibly a half inch through next week as we continue to monitor those storm systems moving in. if you're going to kirkwood this weekend, it's going to be all clear, fresh powder on the ground. there's more snow in the forecast next week here's a look what one of the computer models is putting down for next week as we get those cold fronts moving through, over a foot of snow in kirkwood. that looks really good. i'll be watching that. mike, you're saying there's complication for the crash in sunol? >> we thought the crash over near -- sunol towards fremont, thought that would clear

quickly. you can see all extensions pretty good. 680 southbound, reports of some radiator fluid leaking and so there's absorbant spread out. you'll have one lane blocked through the area. light traffic, no slowing shows up but be careful at the scene. we warn you about the cones on the shoulder there. over here a little slowing off 205. waze reports a slower drive over two hours before. but now over here our mountain towards livermore, we're about one hour for the slower drive. if you zigzag and follow waze, that will get you out 40 minutes, maybe 45 now. join nbc bay area wazers and that will help you on your way wherever you're going this weekend. a live look outside, the richmond/san rafael bridge shows how light it is from the east bay to the north bay. back to you. >> 5:21. coming up next on "today in the bay," terrifying moments caught on camera.

mountain and towards passers by, people had to run out of the way as snow plummeted down the hill and over a road. this happened in france and fortunately no one was hurt or killed. an update for you on the lawsuits alleging pg&e was responsible for the north bay fires and should pay for damages. about 100 lawsuits and they are heading for a key hearing in san francisco's superior court next month. pg&e's electric lines are accused of igniting those fires even though an investigation in that cause is not yet complete. >> 5:25. happening today, shaping up as a pivotal day in the big kcosby trial. his main accusers scheduled to take the stand. she said cosby drugged and assaulted her in 2004. constand's testimony will follow testimony from yesterday with actress and model janice did inson. she received tough questions who pointed out she never mentioned any abuse in her own auto biography and said she was

advised to leave it out to avoid retaliation. >> i think we all have to get real about what power and money does and why so many women were silent for so long. >> several other women have provided similar testimony to dickinson and prosecutors argue it shows a pattern of misconduct. new this morning, a former teacher who accidentally fired a gun inside a monterey county classroom is speaking out about what happened. dennis alexander resigned from his position. his gun discharged and a falling ceiling panel injured two students. he's refusing to talk about what happened or if parents or administrators knew he brought the gun. but he is explaining why he resigned. >> the district had offered this year a supplemental benefit to many employees that were within the qualifications. >> alexander also a reserve police officer serves on the

we'll talk about the weekend forecast. i've got you covered here. there's a lot going on. that's coming up in about seven minutes, mike says it's a mostly clear commute. >> it's friday. it's 5:31. early commute on a friday we typically see light traffic flow. we have the crash southbound 680 around sunol. we're tracking that but no slowing on the sensors. really a smooth drive up 680 and the backup starts at the bay bridge toll plaza because even on a friday with light traffic we have metering lights on but it's a slower build. you see that on lanes off to the left. then across the san mateo bridge, traffic flows nicely there. more traffic to peninsula but no delays. back to you. >> it's 5:31. also happening today, cracking down on distracted driving. several different commutes getting under way across the bay area and today, police agencies across the state will be upping their enforcement on people not

driving hands free. >> today in the bay is live in concord with a warning for drivers this morning. anser. >> reporter: many who have been driving notice the message board focused on distracted driving. april is distracted driving awareness month. a new report put out by aaa shows almost 50% of drivers admit to talking on cell phone while driving and 35% send text messages or check e-mails. looking at dash cam video by triple a in the study that shows what can happen when drivers aren't focused on the road. i did checking this morning, there is good news, the california department of transportation has actually seen a drop in the number of distracted drivers over the past ten years but it's still a big problem here in california, especially for teenage drivers,

distracted driving was a factor in almost 60% of crashes involving teenage drivers, not 44% higher than the national average. law enforcement wants more to be done. here's what they recommend. they ask if you have a very important message or e-mail, just pull over. like with a designated driver, try having a designated texter, someone who can access your phone or respond to calls or texts. and if you're reallying struggling to stay off the phone, lock it up in the trunk. if you don't understand what designated driving is, we have a link on our website, nbcbayarea.com that explains it all and marcus and laura, it's not cheap. the first ticket is $160 and fine can really add up. roaring live, anserhassan. >> things change quickly. >> good safety warning. >> new this morning for you, chp is investigating an accident that killed a person who was

walking on interstate 580 in oakland. this happened near high street and closed all westbound lanes. 5:33. authorities a say school bus driver was legally drunk transporting a high school swim team. there was video actually shot by the swim coach seems to support the accusations, take a look. >> i'm a professional driver. >> the coach says the video shows the bus driver shouting at a bus in front of him telling him to pull forward but the problem was the bus was stopped at a red light. san francisco's washington high school swim coach took the video last friday and said he started shooting the video after charter bus driver ran a red light. the coach then says he went back to the bus to call 911. then says things got worse. >> just as i was talking to 911, he decides to make a you turn on 26th and gary and as he was making the uturn, he made a wide turn and hit the telephone pole.

>> the good news is everyone was okay. the coach decided to pull his team off the bus. prosecutors say the driver yesterday pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence. >> there will be extra police patrol outside of a north bay school this morning. the security follows a scary incident nearby. police received an anonymous tip that a man tried to lure a child in his car near petaluma junior high yesterday afternoon. they are not saying much about the man except he was driving a red honda civic. alameda police are trying to track down suspects accused in the deadly robbery. surveillance video appears to show a brutal attack on a restaurant worker and owner. friday two men tried robbing him on webster street. some people who frequent the area say they are concerned about their safety. >> definitely makes me think twice about the security that i feel like i have now -- >> so far police have not said if they have arrested anyone. san francisco leaders say they'll teach students about

street safety. this is happening at parker elementary school. san francisco general hospital is also participating. the hospital is set to launch a custom built life size set for safety lesson and all part of the zero vision plan aimed at eliminating traffic related deaths and injuries. mountain view wants help brain storming new ways to raise revenue. a public survey posted on the city's website tomorrow is the deadline. survey asking for feedback on future revenue ideas for areas including transportation. over the next five weeks, two wheels will trump two feet when it comes to boarding caltrains by cars. anyone with a bike will board first. they are trying out this pilot program in hopes of eliminating boarding delays. a live look at oracle where the warriors start the playoff push tomorrow. game one against san antonio begins at noon. >> we're ready because today is blue and gold day. fans being encouraged to take

more degrees from there. heading into the weekend, more sun but we'll also be tracking some rain for early next week. more on that in the forecast in less than five minutes. >> a live look at fremont, the nimitz picks up the volume by the truck scales and also heading into fremont, i'm worried about 680, we're seeing more slowing because of a crash. 5:44, happening today, in the east bay, a martinez pastor who ran away to mexico before being con vicked of child molestation is expected to be sentenced today. he was captured earlier this month and extradited to the u.s. the 37-year-old is expected in a mrteners courtroom later this morning and convicted in december of repeated sexual assault on a child that attended the church. a deported army veteran will become a u.s. citizen. he was granted citizenship two weeks ago after pardoning him for crimes that got him deported

the white house is fighting back. president trump tweeted this morning, comey is a leaking liar and a slime ball. you know every day i ask for your feedback. i read every tweet and e-mail about our coverage of the president. when we first started this segment during president trump's first 100 days we kind of imagined we would read those comments on air. we've vastly underestimated how much breaking news was going to come out of the white house each day. it's friday, after ail, why does scott mcgrew say mr. trump, it's disrespectful. that's a great question. i actually do it to show respect. the white house says that is an acceptable reference. let me show you, i say president trump on first reference, the president on second reference and lower case would be correct grammar then mr. trump. nbc has no policy i'm aware of. i do it to respect the office and only do it for the president. john john kelly becomes kelly the second time i talk about him.

jose up to 70 degrees. and that's what we see the clear skies starting out this morning and also some 40s once again. so good idea to make sure you have on a hat and also a jacket. but you'll be taking the jacket off later today once we warm up. as we look at what's happening here, a lot of rain for parts of the pacific northwest and that will hold off until about sunday when that system moves in, there will be another cold front out ahead of that and some rain starting in the north bay by early afternoon on sunday with scattered showers for much of the bay area throughout the day on monday. then tuesday is looking dry. wednesday starts out dry but then the rain returns as we go wednesday night into thursday. it will also bring in sierra snow. we will have our temperatures going up and down with several more cold fronts moving through for the weekend. looks perfect, 68 degrees in san francisco and then the rain moves in later in the afternoon through evening hours. cool for early next week.

look at monday inland areas only up to 58 degrees but by thursday, we're up to 70. heading over to mike now, you have an update on the crash in san leandro. >> i do and the one heading towards fremont. first of all not a dramatic commute. i should point that out first. we do have this change. we had first got the crash reported southbound 238. it's actually northbound. it augustments slowing off the castro valley because the crash still blocks a couple of lanes as you make that transition over towards northbound 880. be careful there, a slower drive and you'll have to do that as you come off of 580 west bounds. meanwhile, over here, this slows slowing but the speed sensors have improved a little bit. they may be clearing that last lane there. there's radiator fluid, one lane blocked, mostly a distraction for lighter traffic for san jose. a nice smooth drive there and no

welcome back, it's 5:55, a horrific crime in the foothills. sierra. police are investigating a double murder and suicide inside a home yesterday morning in pine grove. police say 26-year-old jacob fayer shot and killed his girlfriend and father and then turned the gun on himself. the couple's 4-year-old daughter was in the room next door and woke up to the sound of gunshots. family members are trying to come to terms with the tragedy.
