playoff game. >> and missile strike in syria leads to protests and questions about whether the military action was necessary. the news starts right now. good evening. i'm terry mcswain. >> and vicki nguyen. we've just learned all lanes of i-580 are closed right now. the lapd are investigating a shooting. >> someone in a whies suv passing buy opened fire around 7:00. officer not hit. it is unclear if the officer was targeted. a ford sedan was hit by gunfire but there are no injuries. they are looking for sell casings and evidence. we have a crew to follow the story and bring you updates throughout the evening. >> and the top story. president trump declaring victory after last night's missile strikes in syria. but the miss succession remains unclear tonight. >> protesters in the streets.

we have team coverage with roz who has the latest on the syrian strikes and international response. >> reporter: from a u.s. warp, one of the 105 missiles fired into syria. all targeted a alleged syrian chemical weapons facilities. it was a multi national barrage. british tornado war planes and french jets completed what trump called perfectly executed strikes. the syrians fired and shot done nothing. the u.s. claiming every weapon reached its target. 76 missiles made this rumble. it was a kweps research center near the capital. in all three main targets. three used to describe the strikes. >> precise, overwhelming and effective. >> syrian's chemical program he says set back years. syria's president assad appeared to take it in stride walking to work this morning. protests outside the u.s. now threatening again. >> i spoke to the president this morning.

and he said if the syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again the united states is locked and loaded. >> reporter: russia said the attacks were an act of aggression. direct conflict with the u.s. avoided though at least for now. unclear how much of syria's chemicals and its intent to use them have been destroyed. nbc bay area news. after those missiles rained down on syria, the united states and the rest of the world are now waiting to see if russia will respond. so far it's only been words. russian military officials tell our international partners at nbc news that syrian air defenses shot down 71 missiles out of 103 that were fired. nbc news has not been able to verify that. the pentagon however says no missiles were intercepted. in a statement by the kremlin, president putin says they found no trace of a military attack. they also say the strikes were

an action of aggression and lawlessness. downtown voicing opposition to the strikes. following protests throughout the afternoon. sergio? >> reporter: it's become a tradition for coalition events protesters here to gather at the plaza. this afternoon they gathered and voiced their concerns. this group raised several about the reasoning behind the allied strikes on syria friday night. in general they are opposed to any kind of military action by the united states. the leaders in the coalition voiced concerns about the trump administration's reasoning for the strike. one organizer questioned president trump's legal difficulty this week. including the fbi raid of his long time personal attorney. >> trump wants to change the subject. he certainly wants to change the subject. do i thinks that the main reason

driving the policy? no i think it is a longer term policy trying to dominate this whole region. >> members of code pink went to senators homes earlier this afternoon. they want members of conor gillaspie to try and prevent any further military strike. this afternoon tweeted, "assad must not be allowed to gas his seasons but congress also must be consulted before strikes. organizers of these protests are already working on an b event tomorrow afternoon. a larger event in oakland. thank you very much. and more. local lawmakers were speaking out today.

tomorrow as well. so very similar to the current conditions that you see out right now. this is a nice shot of downtown san jose. the temperature trend into the overnight hours will also notice some increase in cloud cover. that is because we're tracking a system a fairly cold one expected to make its way in through tomorrow. by about 2:00, 3:00 a.m. you are going to see a lot more of the clouds. already see some rain developing just you have to coastline. we have this system moving in from alaska. that is why it is a cold one. i'll talk about the time line for showers and how much we're expecting and how long it is going to last in a bit. >> when you see there is rain in the forecast a good reminder to download our nbc bay area app to find out when it is going to come down and when it is really close to where you are. it is free. and monitor the changes. in an eastbay neighborhood. police ordered a shelter --.

police got a call about gunfire about 2:30. when officers arrived they found numerous shell casings but no victims or suspects. police are investigating a the brobry with a suspect who chose a memorable outfit. the men there wearing construction clothes and that is a hard hat. police say he walked into comerica back and approached the teller. showed her a gain in his waistband and demanded money. he jumped over the counter and stole cash from drawers and then ran out. fire around 11:30. crews fidel castro knocked down the fire but the home is badly damaged. they believe it is began in a fireplace and spread. there was a dog in the home they think it got out safely but the dog is still missing.

richmond are closed right getting back to our breaking news. you are seeing pictures our viewers are sending in of cars trying to get out of mess on eastbound 580 in richmond. where a chp officer who pulled someone over to the side of the road. someone driving by opened fire. the officer was not hit. nobody was hit. but one vehicle was hit by some gunfire. happened about 7:00 near the central avenue exit in richmond. you see the cars there just getting out there as much as possible. because eastbound 580 in richmond near central avenue is closed. cars trying the turn around and take off at the bay exit. starbuck's is apologizing after an arrest in its stores.

all caught on camera and quickly went viral with many calling it racial profiling. thursday police arrested these two men at a starbuck's in philadelphia. the men were at a table waiting for a friend and one asked for is it bathroom code. but he was told it was only for paying customers. a barista called police saying the pair was trespassing. starbuck's apologized to the two individuals and customers. they are reviewing policies. they march to send a message. they marched in support of science. march happening in more than 200 cities today. video of a march in oakland. supporters want lawmakers in oakland to know they care about science. they want more money in schools and basic research. >> let people make up their own minds and their own opinions. >> sponsors of today's march

include. the science center. san jose's tech museum. next friday is another march and coinciding with earth day. in japan town in san francisco, thousands were there for the northern california cherry blossom festival. nbc bay area was there to join in on the fun. it included colorful displays of the japanese fun and culturally diversity. the festival is the biggest celebration of asian tradition on the west coast. the fun continues tomorrow and next weekend. although the weather may not hold up so nicely as it did today, right? >> i mean today was pretty perfect. anything fun outside. >> and tomorrow? >> changes ahead. yeah you may want to start to keep it in mind that the wind will also be picking up. so if you have any outdoor parties, anything like that. you may want to reconsider and maybe take it either inside or set up a nice tent.

right now in san jose it is 62 degrees. and the wind speeds actually are getting a little breezy out there. 16 miles per hour. today's daytime high for san jose was 77 degrees. probably why it is also so warm out there. slightly warmer in most spots across the bay area. but already starting to cool down nicely as the cold front preaches. concord 65, liver moore 62. hayward 59. oakland 60 and malibu about 64 along the coastline upper 50s. we've got a nice night so far. still fairly calm out there. overnight lows drop into the 50s but we are expecting to get more of that cloud cover. just ahead of that storm. and this is why. doppler radar right now. you can see some of the rain already developing just off the coast. and this system is going to be a cold one. that is what's going to drop our temperatures down 10-plus degrees. but it is also going to bring snow to the sierras. let me take you through the time

line. high 70s for today. sunday expect a cloudy start and then rain by the afternoon. so we'll start to see some showers through ukia, about launcht. and if i fast forward around dinner time, 5:00, 5:30 we get light to moderate showers. heavier pocket thus oakland and hayward. and again sweeping through into the overnight hours. overnight into monday morning those showers will continue and as we head into monday we get a chance of possibly seeing some thunderstorms develop. out of this system. you macro climate highs for tomorrow? here it is. this is what you can expect for today. upper 70s onnen the map. tomorrow up 60s for san jose. oakland 60 degrees. san francisco 58. santa rosa 58. and syrierra snows. might even see snow for the higher peaks and mountains in the bay area as well. estimated snow totals through

monday about 11:00 you can see some of the higher spots about 12 inches of snow. king vail 13. this is going to help with the snow pack but check your road conditions. a lot of people like to head up on sundays. may not be ideal. sunday night in monday will probably be the worst commute. over the next 10 day, we get a bit of a break from the rain on tuesday but then on wednesday just picking up the long range models it likes we may get a weaker system wednesday night into thursday and that might kick up the showers again. so for now we're just anticipating a fairly cool week before we warm up again. >> and a pretty dramatic drop in temps? >> 10, 15 plus degrees. so tomorrow have a feeling people are going to be bundled up. i will. >> thanks so much. coming up, all gave some. some gave all. a tribute to gold star families. where you can find it and who rallied to bring the monument to the south bay. ♪ raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens ♪

points. 5 of 6 from downtown as the warriors take game one 113-92. >> i thought it was important to reestablish our defense. one way or the other. win or lose, like we had to bring the effort. at the defensive end. that is basithe only way you can have success in the playoffs and that is the reason this is a championship team. you know, those guys get all the credit for shooting their shots and scoring points. that is where the glory ends up. but it is the defense that has been the key for this team for years. so it was important to reestablish that. i thought we did that. but again we've got to do it again, and again and again. >> thank you. so great tonight. and our focus was there. when those two things are there and we communicate, we're almost impossible to score on. and we did a great job obviously holding them to 40% in the field and we got so many guys versatile enough to guard every position. that is our biggest strength. and can't be complacent though.
