showing a better flow. starting to recover heading north towards 23rd, where i showed you that backup as far back as the coliseum a few minutes ago, you can use westbound westbou westbound 580 that is clear. here's palo alto towards san francisco, an easy light drive but the southbound side, it's also clear, no problems there. here's the richmond/san rafael bridge from the east bay and towards the north bay, a good drive as well. back to you. thank you very much. new this morning at 5:01, as you wake up the kids and get them ready to get out the door we're learning about the impact earlier school start times has on middle school students. kris sanchez is live in san jose with a new study which was just released overnight. good to see you, kris. >> reporter: good morning, laura, the morning bell here at hoover middle school rings at 7:24 and that new research out this morning shows that if that bell were delayed students would not only get more sleep to

better sleep. let's get to results out this morning. this is from the nation's largest children's hospital. and 8:00 a.m. start time would yield 17 more minutes of sleep per day which researchers found correlated with better attendiveness at school and better sleep at night based oj surveys of a thousand seventh and eighth graders in the mid-atlantic. we have reported on this recently as san jose unified students presented a pro and concession for parntents. sleep deprivation according to centers for disease control, a lack of sleep is correlated with risky behaviors like drinking and smoking and using drugs and lead to overeating and symptoms of depression. the new research out this morning will appear in the journal of school health. i will post a link to that in my twitter feed and also on my facebook page in case you want to have a conversation with your school administrators. in san jose, kris sanchez,

"today in the bay." happening today, congress will get a briefing on the syria missile strike. the defense secretary and joint chiefs of staff will give lawmakers an update behind closed doors. president trump ordered the strikes on three chemical weapons facilities. also today president trump will meet with japan's prime minister at mar-a-lago in florida. mr. trump has an op-ed in usa today touting tafrm retax reform. the president and his attorney michael cohen wanted a first look at evidence seized on a raid on cohen's office. cohen argued attorney-client privilege but the judge sided with the government. here's the former u.s. attorney now working as an expert for nbc. >> the privilege review team will set stuff aside the investigator team cannot have. >> monday, a wild new

development out of that court hearing, michael cohen had three clients in the past year, president trump is one, a republican fundraiser another and fox news host shawn hannity, who tried to stay anonymous as the third. hannity says his interactions with cohen were minimal. all four bodies of a missing southern california family have now been found in the mendocino county river. they were traveling from portland to their home in santa clarita when their vehicle plunged in the eel river. the family was reported missing when they never arrived to a relative's home in san jose. this morning, the search is on for two men accused of sexually assaulting a san francisco woman. she thought she was getting into a ride share and it happened in early saturday morning. the woman said she got into the car outside bruno's on mission street. she said the men inside attacked her. leaving her with no shoes phone or i.d. it took her 45 mills away to

sonoma. we talked to a different woman who had a similar experience last year in l.a. >> i literally woke up to him in the back seat with me parked somewhere and he was just banging my head against the seat. >> investigators say they are still trying to figure out if the suspects worked for a ride share company or were just pretending to. happening today, walnut creek city leaders will meet to examine the parking crunch. city launched a pilot program offering valet parking in the downtown parking lots. they'll now look at a possible dynamic pricing model. happening today, a vote to extend a closure at twin peaks, half of the figure eight road at the top of of the landmark has been closed to vehicles since 2016. pilot program expires this year and examiner reports that the transportation board could extend the closure to 2020. the goal is to make the road safe for walkers and bicyclists. at 5:05, oakland city

council members will vote on school crossing guards. council approved that plan and add two crossing guards in each city council district. council members will decide where those new guards should go. 5:06. happening tonight, a live look at the oakland coliseum right now sure to be rocking later on tonight and that's because the a's are celebrating 450 years by treating fans to free baseball. bob redell is live at the coliseum this morning as thousands prepare to head to the game. bob, that could mean we're talking about a lot of traffic this evening. >> reporter: marcus, this could be the most well attended game for the a's here at the coliseum in the history of the franchise. we're talking about more than 70,000 fans trying to get here into the coliseum parking lot when it opens at mid afternoon. the reason for the attendance being so high, the tickets to tonight's game are free to fans who rsvp in advance.

the organization handed out more vouchers for those free tickets than there are seats. so those 70,000 fans have reportedly rsvp for the 65,000 seats expected to be available. this will be a first come, first serve situation. those who don't get a seelt will receive tickets to another game. the a's are doing this to commemorate the 50th anniversary of when the team started playing here at the coliseum on april 17th of 1968. the team will also be handing out 50th anniversary tote bags to the first 35,000 fans. the a's have some of the lowest attended games in all of major league baseball. averaging around 15,000 people, fans a game this season so far. incidentally, today is also the 39th anniversary of the a's worst attended game. only about 250 fans showed up april 17th 1979 to see the a's play the mariners on what was

good tuesday morning, we're coming up on 5:13, i had to crank the heater on a couple of degrees this morning. it is chilly out there and maybe even cool inside your house. it's going to be in the low 50s through 9:00 and then reaching into the mid-60s today in cupertino. a lot of sunshine, much more calm weather today compared to yesterday. but we do have more rain in the forecast and i'll detail that coming up in less than five minutes. >> and your travel times through the south bay really good right now. too early for most of the silicon valley, but what you expect and 880 recovers a little slow past the coliseum and starting to move back towards the 15 minute drive. >> and very happy tuesday morning to you. stocks are set to trade higher on the open after a really good run on monday. netflix reported profits last night said it had record growth. tesla tapping the brakes, says

it's going to stop the assembly line as it deals with what it calls bottlenecks in tesla 3 production. the chinese now say they are going to let car companies like tesla build factories in china without partnering up with chinese companies. president trump definitely gets a win on that. it's also tax day. we've got a couple of extra days because of april 15th, that was a sunday. monday was a holiday in several states and in washington. president trump held a round table about tax cuts in florida monday. he said this is the last year you'll have to fill out a complicated form. factoring the fight for tax cuts, republicans often held up a postcard, that's how you're going to record your taxes. they wrote an op-ed where he said this is the last year americans will fill out outdated complicated tax forms many americans will complete taxes on a simple single sheet of paper. that's much more likely. americans will be able to switch

many of them to the 1040 ez because of standard -- bigger standardized deduction but the new tax law passed in december doesn't have anything about a new tax form, certainly not a tax postcard. a brand-new nbc wall street journal poll shows fewer americans actually like the tax cuts even if they are getting money. and as time goes by, fewer do. it's getting less popular. 27% of adults polled say the tax cuts are a good idea. 36% say it's a bad idea and 34% have no idea, no opinion at all. >> not surprised. >> thanks a lot, scott. >> well, we've actually learned starbucks leaders have now met with two black men arrested last week inside a philadelphia cafe but the company still under fire this morning. >> what do we want? >> liberation. >> when do we want it? now. >> activists held a protest for

and 67 in concord. in hayward, a high of 63 degrees. and 56 in half moon bay. not the best beach day today. and in redwood city, 64 degrees. 59 in the mission district. and today north bay, 64 in napa and novato. as you check out your morning forecast for going out, being active and maybe going for a jog in hayward, it's going to be chilly through about 9:00 and then it will start to feel a little bit more comfortable. i'm also tracking the next chance of rain. so far looks like a swirl of clouds in the pacific and low area lsh approaching with a cold front. out ahead of that a quick round of rain, clouds increase early tomorrow morning and then by tomorrow night, rain starts to move into the north bay by about 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon and rest of the bay area will see that rain between 8:00 and 9:00 tomorrow night. by the time you wake up on thursday, it is all out of here, bringing us a quick tenth to quarter inch of rain across all of the bay area and then once

again will be drying out. here's a look at the sierra this morning, squaw valley get being ready for some rain that will change over to snow. that's a look at the forecast. if you're going that way, mike, you're trying to get people to work. >> that's right, better for some -- worse for others. let's show you overall the bay. speed sensors south bay peninsula, great crossing the bay. the bridges look very good right now. backup forming at the bay bridge, that's a little worse for some folks. 880 fully recovers and speeds coming up past 23rd towards the coliseum. lanes cleared a few minutes ago. coming out of the altamont, more traffic, 205 slows a bit. a crash at greenville. stay to 580 and you should be fine but you have a lot of company. coming out of the same area, we have train traffic, this is a problem. ace train, number one closely and there's a delay through the altamont because of another freight train slowing the commuter train down.

someone has actually paid over a million d 5:25 right now. just how bad is the housing crisis in the bay area? someone actually just paid more than 1 million dollars for this condemned home. this is in fremont's mission neighborhood. i want you to look at this house, it is said to be in sad shape, i don't think you can disagree with that at all. the real estate agent says he put this on the market in january and it sold for $230,000 over the asking price. the real estate market in fremont is really hot because of the location and good schools. we're getting people coming from across the bay we can buy this house for a million one and we'll pay 200,000 over and that's still a good deal for us. >> a million dollars is nothing, right? so check this out. this is a burned out home in san

jose. it's on the market for $800,000. in that condition. real estate agency says he has six offers in hand. so we looked at the current home values in fremont for you and zillow reports the average home is valued at $1,50,000. that's more than 12% increase over last year. maybe you're looking for something less permanent. the medium rent price in fremont is $3200 a month. new this morning, a warning for anyone still looking to buy coachella tickets. 50 people in southern california have been scammed. they paid thousands of tickets from an online company. one woman says when she went to pick up the tickets at the meeting spot, she found several other buyers but the sellers never showed up. >> flew in from ireland, from italy, from all over the world. they were teenager there and it was horrible.

degrees as more people head out the door and mid-60s today. today is the day to get outside. we were chased indoors by the rain off and on yesterday afternoon. a look at all of the high temperatures, we'll be up to 62 in oakland and 63 in santa rosa and 59 today in san francisco and we're going to talk about that weekend forecast in about seven minutes, mike says it's well lit out there for the commute. >> like the clap on, lights are on. the backup formed because meter being lights are on at the bay bridge. that's how quickly it formed but the left approach a little bit lighter and that indicates maybe the maze is flowing at the light every volume. it is tuesday so we expect a good commute towards the city but those spring breaks rotate and we continue with that pattern through the summer months. that means the mornings are easier and afternoons and evenings continue to be a tougher drive. right now the south bay all the way to the city, no problem and across the san mateo bridge, a

nice drive, back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 5:31. new this morning, an influx of overdose calls across the country and right here in the bay area. one of the latest victims is a petaluma teenager who died after ingesting xanax laced with fentanyl. this is one of several incidents in the last few days. here's a look at the growing opioid crisis not just happening across the country but our own backyard. pete, you've been pouring through some of those numbers. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. i had a chance to dig through numbers and we'll get to in a moment. in the latest incident that took place just yesterday, according to petaluma police, two adults were arrested including the 16-year-old victim's mother in connection to this incident. they are facing several charges including child endangerment and possession of narcotics but this has been a problem for the petaluma area in the past six months. here are the latest numbers we're getting according to

petaluma police. they have responded to close to 19 narcotic related overdose calls and there have been three deaths in that six-month period. incidents are her owe inrelated but they have seen an increase in fentanyl, powerful and deadly if improperly used. i did look into the overall numbers when it comes to opioid deaths in all of california and which county are seeing the highest numbers. here is what i was able to find. these are the latest numbers as of 2016. they are coming to you from the california health care foundation. you can see on your television screen there there have been more than 2,000 opioid overdose deaths in 2016. 237 of those are fentanyl related overdose deaths and of the major counties, san francisco with the highest total in 2016 with 94 deaths, not listed on the screen yet, santa clara county reported 68 deaths

and lowest number of deaths when you look at the major counties in the bay area was right here in nmarin, 14 deaths in 2016. that's with the latest petaluma incident, two adults are in custody at the jail. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks, pete, very alarming. >> anti-gun protesters expected at cow palace today because the board of directors holding a meeting. activists are calling for them to stop hosting gun shows and a protest was held over the weekend as well. there are two gun shows planned at cow palace this june. >> 5:34 this morning, sacramento police department released dozens of new video and audio clips tied to the deadly shooting of stephon clark. they posted the footage on u tube. a month ago they shot and killed clark in his grandmother's backyard. officers say they thought clark was carrying a gun. some of the new footage shows

clark dead but what turned out to be just a cell phone. and it also shows officers giving clark cpr. a relative of clark's appeared at a seck men to rally last night and not addressed new videos but did make a new plea for justice. >> the family along with all of you request to help us fight for justice for stephon clark, as long as it takes. >> the event last night in sacramento was part of the nationwide poor people's campaign. former youtube workers are shedding light on what they say is a history of violent threats made by angry and disgruntled video creators after three weeks where the shots were fired at san bruno location and three weeks ago by video creator with a grudge. that shooter killed herself as police closed in. business weekly spoke with former workers who say they heard about employees being

threatened from time to time. often it was video creators who became frustrated with policy changes and other issues and also say the threats were usually e-mailed area never became physical. at 5:36, happening today, people living in san mateo county can get advice on how to deal with a violent intruder. the sheriff's department wants to make sure people are prepared and starts at 6:00 at the adult community center in san carlos. overnight we look through the crime reports on the sheriff's department website. there's no specific category for violent intruder but here's what we did find in the last year, 200 burglaries were reported and there are more than 500 assault reports. >> 5:36 for you, happening today, we'll get an update on the proposed one stop restoration senttory to help the homeless. no details yet on an exact location, it's a proposal from the santa clara county supervisor. looking live in washington, d.c., california governor jerry brown waking up there.

brown will speak to a national press club today and nbc will be there to ask him questions as well. also he'll address a union group at the national conference and minutes ago, president trump tweeted about governor brown, saying looks like jerry brown and california are not looking for safety and security along their very porous border. he cannot come to termses for the national guard to pro toll and protect the border. the high crime rate will only get higher. the two leaders are in odds over bringing the national guard to the california border. and now to the playoff fever gripping the bay area and all of its sports fans, warriors and sharks playing key games last night. a live look at oracle this morning there. the warriors entered halftime trailing san antonio but that's when the dubs kicked up a notch. >> clay thompson scored 24 second half point and kevin durant with 32. the warriors won game two going away with it, 116-101. shawn living ston talked about

the big spark the they found at halftime. >> for the second half it was up to us to change the tempo of the game and get stops and be more physical. >> game three is on thursday in san antonio. at the shark tank, the anaheim ducks now playing a huge hole after fweting blown out by the sharks, four goals second period helped propel san jose to an 8-1 victory. sharks lead in the series three games to none. game four is tomorrow night at the shark tank. a lot of action to take in, mike. >> oh, yeah, there was a lots of parking lots south bay with the sharks over there a's and warriors and a's again tonight. folks trying to get free seats, good luck if you tried. i did not. towards the drive though, plenty of a's green, that's nice. tri-valley, we'll focus a lot on here, first we have the crash, we had the crash altamont and greenville. that just cleared seconds ago. 580 moves relatively smoothly

people, the fake media back there. >> marcus points out back in february he's going to stay in florida. back in february he med with shinzo abe, the prime minister of japan. he will do so again at his florida golf resort. a judge has told the president and his personal lawyer they will not be the first to see personal documents seized by the fbi during a raid of cohen's office but did open the possibility of appointing what's called a special master to sort what documents are protected by attorney-client privilege and what are not. in that same court hearing, we learned lawyer michael cohen not only represents the president, he has fox's sean hannity as a client as well. who cares? two reasons, cohen has a reputation for representing men who dealt with women in the

going out to the park after work or school today, it's going to be beautiful but i wanted to give you a look back at how much rain we've had for the month of april. it is really unbelievable. santa rosa measured over 4 inches -- almost 4 inches of rain and 3 3/4 in san francisco. these numbers are three to four times the normal amount of rain we normally get during this month. and then even looking at san jose, we're almost 150% of normal and mountain view, 137%. we've really had amazing numbers in terms of rain and trying to catch up a little bit more from the deficit we've had from rainfall for this water year. as we get a look at the highs today, it dries out. we're up to 59 in san francisco and in san jose, 66 degrees and concord 67 today. a very nice one but it does

start out cool. you do need a jacket and you hear it's going to be green and sunglasses, you'll be breaking those out with sunshine today. by tomorrow the clouds move in and this is the next storm system that will be movering in and it's going to be moving fast with the cold frant thont that sweep across the bay area. we'll wake up tomorrow morning to clouds and then we'll see those clouds off and on, a little bit of clearing for tomorrow afternoon for areas south of the golden gate bridge. and some rain starting to move into the north bay by the evening commute. the rest of the bay area sees the rain mostly around sunset or shortly there after and by the time you wake up, thursday morning, it's going to be out of here. so a rainfall total looks like it will be another 10 to possibly quarter inch of rain for more for a few spots, especially the hills may get more amounts of rain. then we're going to see sunshine for the rest of the forecast. warming up in the upper 60s for san francisco.

inland areas sunday, 82 degrees. and mike is saying the drive it's not so bad this morning. >> not so bad. any time it's slow -- any time you have to go to work and it's earlier than you want, it's no so pleasant either. 101 just shows traditional slowing there over there sunol, 680 south and maybe 880 through san leandro towards hayward, we're seeing speeds dip a little bit. this might be a couple minutes early to show up, 101 slow but normal spots but we'll see if this results in anything more. there are no krarks reported there or over at santa cruz summit for highway 17. still 18 minutes from highway 4 to the berkeley curve which starts to slow down a little bit as you get through the macarthur maze. there's the berkeley curve. the rest of the maze shows smooth traffic but 580 westbound slows as you approach as well. that might be something. no incidents or crashes reported in the maze and across the san mateo bridge, more company westbound over here from hayward

the woman accused of good tuesday morning, developing this morning the search ins tense fiing for the woman accused of killing her husband and a look alike. police are looking for 56-year-old lois reese, she's a mother of three and grandmother. police say she shot and killed her husband in minnesota last month and then went on the run across the country. investigators say she eventually ended up in florida where she be friended 59-year-old pamela hutch inton. police say she killed
