bridge. near the toll plaza. i've been monitoring chp reports. they haven't given exact details on exactly what the traffic hazard is. i did notice on the live traffic camera, off to the side it looks to be a tow truck, i saw a patrol car swooping in. that seems to be off to the side. hopefully that will ease up the back-up happening earlier on at 4:30. even then we're starting to see back-up along bay bridge. taking a look at the bay area, palo alto looking pretty good out there. nice and smooth commute. bridge drive time westbound 580 towards richmond bridge only 8 minutes. not too bad. bay bridge, as you know, does typically get busy. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks so much. 5:00. happening now union police trying to track down a 12-year-old girl seen yesterday. camila rodriguez left school with a friend but she never showed up and then never returned home. police say her cell phone is turned off.

they say they don't know why. she might have run away. she was last seen wearing black north face jacket. >> across the bay an 11-year-old girl also missing, police asked you to keep an eye out for her. last seen yesterday morning near intersection of camino real and bay street. diana was wearing a green sweatshirt with the word "pink" on it. if you drive through the east bay during rush hour, it can become a mess. today caltrans will break ground on express carpool lane nobody 680 right there to ease some of that congestion. "today in the bay" bob redell along that artery and the impact it could have for us and thousands of drivers. that's a tough one. >> reporter: it is, laura and marcus. that's why caltrans and alameda county decided that hot lane. this is one of the top ten most congested corridors in the bay area.

anyone who has driven it like i have for years can testify to that. this would help alleviate the traffic. later this morning the government will break ground on this $200 million project that will extend nine miles from mission boulevard and fremont, north on 680 pass highway 84 exit to livermore and sunol. anyone with clean air sticker can use it for free. solo drivers can use it as long as they are willing to pay. the toll will fluctuate based on demand. >> you don't mind paying. >> if it gets me out of traffic, i don't mind paying. >> how much would you pay? >> the tolls aren't bad where they are, as long as they don't go up. it will be fine. >> i don't think we should have to pay for it. i think it's something that comes with driving on the

forced an emergency landing in atlanta. this, in fact, is new footage from the terrifying scene last night. smoke was coming from the engine after it touched down. the delta plane had just taken off from hartsfield-jackson on its way to london, a long fight there. firefighters waiting for the plane quickly hosed it down and luckily no one was injured. in the mvp time ntsb in philadelphia trying to find how a ruptured fan blade caused the problem. a mother of two was sucked through the window and later died. they are focusing on the wear and tear of that blade. one can only imagine what those southwest flyers were going through. it turns out one bay area native was on board that flight. this is a moment she reunited

with her husband chad in dallas. no words, just tears of joy. she's from concord but now lives in texas. her husband talked in texts to each other as the engine was failing. >> for the next five minutes we said all the things we wanted to say to each other if that was the last thing we got to say. >> can you imagine that. investigators say 22 minutes passed from the moment of the explosion until that plane landed safely. >> 5:06 for you right now. new this morning, you really may have to let your inner ear fill in the blanks on this story. we do have a look. take a look at the photo. menlo park fire district testing old fire system side by side with the new system using voice alerts. firefighters say voice alert system really worked much better. this is where you let your imagination take you away. we actually don't have the audio of that. but firefighters plan to ask the board to fund the new system to

use in the event of a potential dam failure or wildfire. >> today 100 people might have to find a new place to live. sonoma county clearing out a homeless encampment to build apartments. joining us live in santa rosa with more on the controversial move about to get under way just a few hours from now. pete, this is part of a bigger problem facing communities across our area. >> big problem across the area. we've seen cities such as san francisco and berkeley struggle with clearing out homeless encampments, trying to find housing options for folks living in those encampments. we're standing at the roseland village shopping center in santa rosa, not too far behind homeless encampment cleared out in a matter of hours. i was going to show you guys some pictures, pretty dark back there as far as seeing what was at the encampment. cleared out in a matter of hours. as you mentioned, more than 100 people lived in that encampment

over the past two years. sonoma county officials originally wanted to clear this out on march 30th. a u.s. district judge issued an order to postpone that date after the county was sued by residents and advocates saying it was a violation of constitutional rights. the hope by this judge was to give advocates more time to find shelter or housing for those in encampment. santa rosa police will clear out encampment. according to the democrat they will take aggressive approach forcing people to live, then issuing citations. if people remain, they will begin to make arrests. the plan for the city is eventually build apartments there, affordable units, plan to clear out this encampment. they plan to clear this out by 8:00 a.m. live in santa rosa, pete suratos, today in the may. >> 5:08, vta will show off new fleet of fully electric buses. you might be riding them soon. they soon also plan to talk

right now it's 5:14. we walk out the door to a chilly but cool and clear morning as we take a live look outside in san jose. let's go to santa clara. we'll be at 46 at 7:00, then warming temperatures throughout the day. mid-60s at 1:00 and a lot of sunshine. we've got a lot of sun in this forecast, too. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend coming up in

less than five minutes. >> a live look right now at the bay bridge. can you see traffic starting to build. just off to the right-hand side, an earlier traffic minor fender-bender that moved off. no worries about that blocking traffic commute. an update on your drive times coming up. >> 5:15 right now, continuing coverage at san francisco continues its crackdown on dockless scooters. three companies provide those scooters which riders leave wherever they feel. city leaders working on new regulations. yesterday public works teams confiscated two more. following up on complaints they were blocking those sidewalks. they remember last week workers confiscated close to 70 of those scooters. >> the california highway patrol is warning everyone to be aware if you buy disneyland tickets from unofficial third party. 8,000 tickets were stolen from the future farmers of america association. officers say thieves took off

ibms disappointing earnings. oil prices near 2017 as government data shows drop in u.s. crude supplies and saudi arabia calls for higher prices. dow fell and s&p added points. amazon has, as you mentioned, more than 100 million paid prime members worldwide. more than costco and the first time amazon p given us a number on subscriber base. this annual letter to shareholders jeff bezos said amazon skipped items with prime. said amazon music has tens of millions of paid customers. whole foods shutting down its rewards programs, digital foods and customer accounts may 2nd. the grocery chain will put everything into amazon prime according to an e-mail sent this week. rewards won't roll over to prime so you should try to use them before they expire.

morning. >> clear, cool, but we can get outside and enjoy it. no worries over the next few days and we're going to get sunshine heading into the weekend and warming temperatures over the next few days. it does start out cool, step out the door around oakland. taking a live look outside at the coliseum where the a's are coming off yet again another win yesterday's high scoring game. if you missed it, you do want to check that out. upper 40s at 8:00, noon 57 degrees, low 60s today. and it's going to be just a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. we had quite a bit of cloud cover keeping those temperatures a little bit lower. then the seven-day forecast up at the bottom of the screen. you can get a look at microclimate while i talk about the hiking trail or parts of the south bay. at noon still be a little cool with breezy winds and all clear at 1:00. we'll keep that sunshine as our highs make it into the low 60s today looking at all of our high temperatures for the south bay. gilroy 68 degrees for the high

today. we're also going to be warmer in the east bay. 70 in danville and also in antioch. oakland 64 degrees and 56 degrees, still cool along the coast. half moon bay at 56, 66 on the other side of the hills and in the mission district up to 61 degrees for the north bay up to 71 today in napa. so looking at napa's weekend forecast in the 80s. if you haven't yet made plans of what to do this weekend, if you can hang out for about 20 minutes and i'll do my weekend forecast and things going on around the bay area as we look at beautiful sunshine, san francisco in the upper 60s to low 70s. a touch cooler early next week but we still keep the dry weather inland area. up to 83 degrees, so really starting to heat up over the next few days. tracking several issues on the roads with an early start. >> a couple of fender-benders,

thankfully not too big to cause major delays. look at the traffic maps. still looking pretty good. for the most part bay bridge, slowing we see earlier, that's cleared to the sides. now just regular typical morning delays. a live look at san mateo bridge. a commute along that bridge. i'll take you over to the bay bridge. earlier traffic hazard cleared off but now we're starting to see heavy delays at this hour from the typical morning commuters. a look right now as well at bridge drive times westbound 580 towards richmond bridge 7 minutes. we started to see slowing westbound 80 bay bridge, about 12 minutes. earlier 7 minutes. so definitely want to take that coffee to go. don't get caught in all that mess. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks a lot. 5:21 right now. coming up next on "today in the ba bay", shedding new light on prince's death. two years later and the charges

sunday talking about their action plan for today. in all, there are about 300 students headed to the state capital. they call themselves bay area student activists or basa, which is also spanish for enough. we talked to one of the students headed to sacramento. she told us the parkland shooting moved her to action. >> i think they have inspired every single student in the united states. they have shown that they are not going to just stand down and let this happen again because it happens way too frequently. many people say we are the generation of mass shootings. i have never lived in a world where there hasn't been a mass shooting. >> laura mentioned that big student walkout planned for tomorrow. students plan to walk out of their classrooms to mark the 19th anniversary of the columbine school massacre in colorado. this is video of the mass car march 14th intended to honor the

lives of 17 people killed at the florida school shooting a month before. there are students at 2,000 schools nationwide who are participating. they are calling for a ban to assault weapons. universal background checks, gun violence restraining orders so people mentally unstable cannot have a gun and also improvements to school safety. today the students will arrive in sacramento about 10:30 this morning. at 6:30 coming up in the next hour i'll talk more about what their plan is for today as they meet with some of their lawmakers. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> really using their voices. >> warrers nba playoff series taking a big back seat to the news pft head coach's wife has died. >> no word whether popovich will be on the sidelines with the team. erin popovich passed away yesterday at the age of 67.

flight 1380, we all feel we were simply doing our jobs. the author of "military moms" knows shults personally. >> i'm really proud of her, proud she's getting the recognition. she's just a wonderful, warm, amazing person. >> you can see that entire interview with author linda maloney on the "today" show. >> 5:35 right now. this morning youtube employees will return to work the day after they were rattled by a disturbing threat. san bruno police say they found a post on instagram promising another shooting at the headquarters. federal agents tracked that threat to pennsylvania where they arrested a child. this comes two weeks after a woman opened fire at the youtube this is in san bruno. she shot three employees and later killed herself. the shooter was upset youtube was censoring her content. very exciting in east san jose, what would you do if you or your neighbors saw a mountain lion walking down the street.

participating in comcast cares day. this is when we rebuild the playground and we also fix up a school. we are going to be in san jose on saturday working hard. i want to make sure all the comcast and nbc employees know exactly what to expect. it's going to be a beautiful start. a lot of sunshine, temperatures in the mid-50s but it will be heating up. so we better get that work done early as it will be reaching up to 80 degrees. we also have northern california cherry blossom festival. this is both days for the weekend. but the parade on saturday in japantown is going to be really nice reaching spot mid-60s during the late morning and early afternoon hoursp eventually 70 degrees. if you're going to be hitting the road out of town, carmel valley, low 70s for tomorrow. upper 70s for the rest of the weekend. so we'll be very comfortable. then if you're going to sierra heavenly, more of that snow is

5:43, an all clear start as we take a look at the shark tank. a lot of people still celebrating and around san jose maybe a little bit tired this morning. as we go to santa teresa checking out the temperature trend we're going to start out with some 40s this morning. with that sunshine we make it into the mid-60s by early afternoon. we do go up a few degrees from there. a look at those numbers and what you can expect when you make plans coming up in five minutes.

>> i've been keeping an eye on the road palo alto moving quickly, fairly good ride out there. i do have an update on the crash in the south bay. i'll have details coming up. >> 5:34, new details on san jose's first b.a.r.t. station, catching the transit. this is where it will be. you said construction 880 and 101. developers building up around that surrounding area. the artist renderings of the building last night. it's called market park san jose, located in the old bay area flea market. who remembers that. you'll be able to live, work and shop there. >> right now we want to take a look. people are moving along at san rafael bridge, richmond san rafael bridge, as we look live. if you drive this road, some good news for you you'll notice a new lane opening up.

eastbound drivers will get a third lane. as you look up, you'll see right lane open side, bridge marin county side. overhead green arrows will guide people. caltrans says that the layunes will be open between 2:00 and 8:00. students say they will call on san jose state to make a plan. they say the school has 300 homeless students. some suggestion include free housing or legalized tent cities. overpass we looked up details on this issue. a site that tracks homeless hot spots. more than 200,000 homeless people reported being homeless in the 2016-2017 school year. that's 3% of california students. >> all students at st. francis state now have access to free hiv and std testing. the school gave lgtbq access

this week. some complained only straight students could get the service. san francisco leaders reportedly expanding a ban on guns at a public gathering. last year supervisors approved that ban for events like parades and protests. but the examiner reports that supervisors are talking about widening it to include smaller events. 5:46. do you think palo alto is growing too quickly? one says when it comes to commercial development cutbacks are needed. palo alto reports the group working on november ballot measure to cut the annual cap for office space in half. >> when it comes to your cell phones we know this all too well. telemarketers blowing up your phone while pa local congresswoman trying to stop that from happening. jackie speier introduced a bill for phone comes to have technology to block robocalls, also control this.

system moving through. but we're still left with these cool temperatures this morning. you step out in napa, only 36 degrees. very chilly there. 40 in livermore, 47 in san jose, 43 today in oakland. now as the seven-day forecast rolls at the bottom of the screen you can check out microclimate now in the peninsula. where today we're heading up to 65 degrees and 61 in san francisco, it will be warmer in the north bay in the low 70s, also extending over to the delta. as you're getting dressed because we do have 30s and 40s, make sure you have a nice, warm jacket. with the lack of rain today and warming temperatures, a good day for dress shoes as well. let's get the kids out the door for school in the tri-valley. livermore once again cool, they do need a nice, warm jacket. later today they will take it off making it into the 60s. you also don't want to forget the allergy medicine. pollen count is high for trees

taking a live look outside. recognize it? that's our san francisco camera this morning, weather will start out cool, warm up just in time for the weekend. check in with kari in a moment, 5:55. the battle between jerry brown and the white house continues. governor brown calling up 400 members of the national guard to help with border security. this diffuses some of the tensions with trump administration but there's a catch. troops will focus on fighting drugs and gun crimes not enforcing immigration or helping with the border wall. homeland secretary visited border wall yesterday and stressed the importance of the wall. >> until we can have operational control of the border, which in part means resources from congress to close some of those legal loopholes, the national guard will be here supporting men and women. >> national guard will be deployed before the end of the month. >> 5:55, trouble in paradise.
