department, obtained overnight by nbc news. the memos are importantly consistent with coney's sworn testimony and they could be critical in an obstruction of justice case. again, this morning the president is attacking comey as a leaker and a liar. president trump, not wasting any time responding to the news tweeting overnight, james comey showed there was no collusion and no obstruction. also, he leaked classified information. wow. will the witch-hunt continue? the president has been blasting comey as a liar and a slimeball. but comey's memos show that during their first meeting in trump tower in january 2017, then president-elect trump praised the former fbi director's great position, saying he was repeatedly put in impossible positions during the campaign but conducted himself honorably. one week after the inauguration, comey writes that during a private dinner, president trump complained about his national security adviser, michael flynn.
7:04 am
"the president pointed his fingers at his head and said, the guy has serious judgment issues." why? the president blamed flynn for not setting up a call to an unknown foreign leader until six days after they sent their congratulations. in february 2018, comey detailed how the president released information about prostitutes in moscow and recounted that russian president vladimir putin once told him we have some of the most beautiful hookers in the world. comey verifying that with rachel maddow thursday night. >> he told you he had a personal conversation with president putin about hookers? >> yes. >> did you believe him or think he was speaking hyperbolically? >> he didn't seem to be speaking hyperbolically. president's legal team is expanding. once known as america's mayor, rudy giuliani is president trump's newest lawyer. the president complimenting him. rudy is great.

republicans think is a good the memos were released as a part of the war on the justice department. but for those folks the memos prove that jim comey's story, to which he testified under oath and in his book, hold up. and it reveals more embarrassing details for the president. i think we'll be talking about the scandalous things today, in the beautiful hookers in russia, the pieces of the dossier that the president was seemingly obsessed with. but the most damaging things with the president, in seven interactions he never asked the top law enforcement person in america, how are we going to get back at the russians? >> we just heard in peter's piece that rudy giuliani has joined the trump legal team. and giuliani was quoted saying, i'll have this wrapped up in a week or so. >> it's not a disagreement among siblings. it is a criminal probe and a

8:35 am
priscilla dies in childbirth. and rebecca adopts her child. it's about race, class, privilege. it's an incredible read. >> jessica, i read about your recommendation. it sounds really good. >> "force of nature" by jane harper is my favorite thriller i've read this spring and i read a lot of thrillers. it's good. about five female coe workers who are forced to go on a corporate bonding retreat in the wilderness and only four return. and they have a different story about what happened to the missing colleague. it's about getting to the mystery of what happened to her. >> nonfiction? >> that sounded exciting. nonfiction, "the recovering" by leslie jamison. her story of getting sober but also so much more. her story alone is incredible. but she does in depth research about creative artists who had problems with addiction. she talks to aa members. if you don't want to take my word for it, stephen king loves
8:36 am
this book. it's an incredible memoir and so much more. >> jessica, what do you like? >> i like "this will be my undoing" by morgan jerkens. a beautiful collection of essays of what it is to be a black woman in america today. this isn't a book about every woman but it's a book for every woman. >> you have a -- yeah. >> that looks really good. >> children and young adults. these aren't picture books but book books. >> this is by mary h.k. choi. two young people kind of find each other in a tough circumstance, they become each other's emergency contacts. their hold friendships blossom over texts. i am not a big texter but i love this book because of their relationship. >> you're a voicemail guy, right? >> good throwback. >> "land of magic" i hear. >> "children of blood and bone"
8:37 am
is about a girl that has to take on the monarchy to bring back magic to her people. she's only 24 years old. you understand why she's created this vibrant world that weaves african mythology with social issues of the day. >> i love it. i love the short cut you're doing. we're throwing out the rules. this is the author's choice. going rogue. what do you like? >> alexander chi is one of the best living writers in america today. this is his collection of ess essays. it's "how to write an autobiographical novel." his life as an artist, as a lover. he's korean-american, and he's guy and dealing with these issues. if you don't know him, you have to know him now. >> that's a special book. i'll co-sign that. i love "you think it, i'll say it," a collection of short stories. and i tore through this book

8:41 am
in your food. eating fruits and vegetables may be the key to staying healthy. b a study found that 70% of fruits and vegetables was contaminated with pesticide. tell me about this study. who did the study and what did they find? >> a consumer advocacy group, analyzed about 39,000 samples from usda data and looked at 47 common fruits and vegetables to do this report. they found that 70% of those conventionally farmed and harvested fruits and vegetables -- it contained detectable levels of pesticides. it was below the thresholds that the epa sets but they were detectable. >> when they find their way into our local markets, people think, if they test it high coming from the farm, somebody must clean them up along the line. >> the important thing about
8:42 am
this is that we're looking at a really safe food supply. we can know we have a safe food supply and washing really matters. these detectable levels in the so-called dirty dozen are below thresholds but the cumulative effect over time. when we're making good choices, we need to remember that we need to wash our vegetables. we need to make sure we're washing our fruits and vegetables. >> let's go through the process. the dirty dozen, what was that? >> they call them the dirty dozen. at the top of the list, they put strawberries, america's sweetheart fruit. they had the most number of samples that had pesticides, detectable levels. >> is this the dirty dozen here? if you're buying grapes and strawberries and these things, you want to clean them more. >> you want to clean them and you might choose organizic. one of the best things we can do
8:43 am
is talk to our farmers. our farmers, organic or con fren vengsal are using test management. >> if i had that apple, i would run it under water. >> running it under water is part of the story. there's a study that compared plain water and bleach and baking soda. and baking soda came out number one. >> you put baking soda in the water and wash it and you're good? >> and in a more perfect world, some of us forget to wash our fruits and vegetables. we want the make sure we're bringing them to the sink, our beautiful berries. and not just rinse them but rinse them under running water. if they have a little skin, we want to wipe them. we might want to use a vegetable brush. >> it's hard enough to get their kids to eat fruits and vegetables. people don't even eat enough fruits and vegetables. >> this is about eat more fruits and vegetables.
8:44 am
it would be irresponsible to say don't eat fruits and vegetables. we want the benefit of eating fruits and vegetables for health and disease risk reduction. it outweighs the potential concern. i want to emphasize that our pesticides, we need to be interested in them and concerned about them. but we also want to know that there are -- the usda is looking out for us and in tandem with the environmental working group, trying to put some of the numbers together to help us. the iller ha er hasilver liningn ask questions and wash our footfoot foods. >> this is the clean 15. >> you might want to start here. avocados and sweet corn came out on top. 1% of any of the tested samples came out with any pesticide residue. >> you still rinse them, right? >> no matter what. the immediate threat is bacterial if you want to break it down. then, we can consider
8:45 am
pesticides. you can wash it, rub it, peel it and buy conventional. organic is a good way to go, as well. supporting our organic farmers puts more organic food into some of the big stores, some of the g grocery stores are supporting it, as well. >> it begs the question, 70%, isn't somebody going to the source and monitoring how much pesticides are used? a lot of this is falling on the consumer that maybe should be backed up. >> it's an excellent plan. part of it is a misconception because detectable doesn't mean it's at unsafe levels. there's levels of thresholds that are set at 100-times to 1,000-times lower. go back to strawberries for a second. one toxicologist estimated with sophisticated calculations, a child would have to eat 1,500 servings in a day to reach that threshold. we're talking about weighing our risk, choosing organic when it's
8:46 am
