of the nuclear programming. overnight, an announcement that no doubt stunned north korea and the world. kim jong un said to declare the quest for nuclear weapons complete. pledging to halt nuclear tests and closing a nuclear test site and promising not to transfer the weapons or know how to anyone else. this comes ahead of the summits with the south korean leader next friday which could pave the way with a face-to-face with the american president next month. president trump saying very good news. tweeting big progress. praise from china and south korea. caution from japan. prime minister shinzo abe calling for complete verifiable denuclearization. the dictator is not giving up the nuclekes yet. a pledge not to use his arsenal

unless provoked. the regime is thought to possession a functioning nuclear weapon and able to hit the united states. kim says it is time to focus on rebuilding his country's shattered economy. north korea has duped the world many times before. and resolving this threat will take more than just talk. it is unclear whether it is a genuine olive branch or a trap to buy more time or give the regime economic relief. what is clear the nuclear weapons program gave kim legitimacy. he is not likely to give that up without concession. back to you. >> thank you. >> let's bring in national security analyst jeremy bash. good to have you here, sir. president trump says the suspension of the nuclear testing is quote good for the world. you have kim jong un who is saying essentially they are stopping because they are now a

legitimate full nuclear power. is this good news or bad news? >> i would be driving under a yellow caution flag this morning, craig. north korea possesses a number of nuclear weapons. they still possess the intercontinental ballistic missile that can hit the mainland of the united states. they are not giving up any of that. this is a halt and frankly reversible freeze on testing. i think the trump administration will have to get a lot more concessions from north korea before we can completely declare them having become denuclearizati denuclearization. >> let's talk about this situation where the north koreans meet with the south koreans and then the meeting with president trump. what will they expect in return for this? >> sheinelle, they will ask u.s. troops leave the korean peninsula and ask for suspension of american and south korean military exercises and relaxation of sanctions. all of those things are the things the united states should

be careful about giving to the north koreans before destroying nuclear stockpiles. >> jeremy, mike pompeo, cia director, went three weeks ago. they had a face-to-face with kim jong un. a secret meeting. is there a correlation with that meeting and this announcement? is this a win for the trump administration? >> i think the trump administration and mike pompeo produced this wave. >> jaeremy bash, thank you. questions about the comey memos and if classified information was leaked when released. this as the democratic national committee sues over the 2016 election. we have geoff ben net winet wit latest on that. >> reporter: good morning. let's start with the released comey memos which are now the subject of the justice department review over whether james comey mishandled

classified material when he shared those documents with a friend last year. this morning, the justice department is investigating james comey's handling of the newly disclosed memos. nbc confirming at least two of the comey memos contain material now deemed classified. >> i created records after conversatio conversations. >> reporter: it offers a rare look of the comey conversations with the president. >> he was focused on the personal piece. he would bring it up repeatedly. >> reporter: and a claim that the russians had tapes of mr. trump with prostitutes in a moscow hotel room in 2013. according to comey, the president pushed back hard saying he did not spend a night in the russian capital during his trip there. publicly available details of the president's eschedule state otherwise. now being reviewed by the democratic national committee.

it is suing the campaign and wikileaks. claiming the conspiracy to help mr. trump win the 2016 election. the lawsuit says that in the trump campaign, russia found a willing and active partner in the effort. to launch a brazen attack on american democracy. the trump campaign firing back slamming the move as a sham lawsuit about the russia collusion claim filed by the dysfunctional democratic party. all of this as the legal drama with stormy daniels against the president gets the first hearing in the california federal court. if the case moves forward, the president could be deposed about the $130,000 payment daniels said she received to keep quiet about the alleged 2006 affair with mr. trump. >> it is about what the president knew and when he knew it. i think that is at the forefront of what the american people should be concerned about.

>> reporter: there is another story breaking this morning. that is with "the washington post" stating jeff sessions is threatening to resign if president trump takes steps to oust deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. sheinelle and craig. >> geoff, thank you. in houston today, friends and family are preparing to say good-bye to former first lady barbara bush. she will be laid to rest during a private funeral. friday, hundreds of people stood in line to pay respects for hours. we have kelly o'donnell outside the church in houston where the funeral will take place. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. this is an invitation only gathering. 1,500 are expected. we will see former prime ministers and former presidents and vice presidents. former first ladies and the current one, melania trump. for 12 hours on friday, the doors were opened for many barbara bush had never met. all day and into the night.

she will be laid to rest next to daughter robin who died as a toddler at the presidential library outside houston. >> the eulogy coming from craig bush. we should mention that nbc news will have special live coverage of mrs. bush's funeral on many stations starting at noon eastern. some other headlines this morning. the faa issued an emergency air worthiness directive ordering inspections of 737 fan blades. that is the same model that caused the explosion that killed a mother of two on southwest flight this week. the critics say the faa should have ordered the inspections sooner. embattled missouri governor eric greitens is facing a felony computer tampering charge. he allegedly stole a donor list

to fund raise for his campaign. greitens has denied all allegations. we are hearing for the first time this morning from a bartender who served the minnesota grandmother who went on the run after allegedly killing two people. marshals finally caught up with lois riess in texas after she killed her husband in minnesota and look alike in florida. we have maya rodriguez in florida. maya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. investigators here describe her as a cold blooded killer and they are now hoping she will be brought to florida quickly to face charges. this morning, the month long manhunt for a grandmother on the run is finally over. law enforcement caught up with lois riess thursday night in south padre island, texas. 30 miles from the border with mexico. >> a citizen saw her based on the video on tv. >> reporter: the hunt for the

56-year-old started last month after police discovered the body of her husband david in their home. that same day, the fugitive at the gas station in iowa where she asked for directions. >> 2018. cameras everywhere. >> reporter: cameras spotted riess in april in ft. myers bleac beach, florida. >> this case from the very beginning struck me as odd. we look at her appearance. she looks like anybody's mother or grandmother. yet she is a cold blooded murderer. >> reporter: riess spent last hours of freedom at the sea ranch restaurant on south padre island. >> she said a have a $100 bill. i don't have anything smaller. is that okay. >> reporter: lori is the bartender who served her. a tip led investigators to the

sick so far. a major rallying cry on friday as thousands of students across the country took part in the school walkout. the protests came on the 19th anniversary of the columbine shooting. students who participated were not born back then, but the students in parkland are calling for stricter gun laws. dylan dreyer is standing by with the check of the weather. >> here in the northeast, things are sunny. back through the plains, we have some heavy rain moving through kansas and some light snow in the denver area right now. oklahoma city will see heavy rain. we are not looking at severe weather. torrential rain and cloud-to-ground lightning. all a possibility as this moves east through the day. it moves into arkansas and eastern texas. into sunday, it pushes through mississippi and new orleans. we will see heavy rain in alabama and work into the southeast with heavy rounds of rain possible through the carolinas and georgia too.

for today across, especially, the interior valleys. now, san jose's temperature trend, if you notice by 10:00 a.m., will be jumping into the 60s and then quickly by 1:00, right around your lunch hour, will be jumping into the mid 70s. san jose is expected to top out in the 80s. i'll talk about how long this warming trend is expected to last coming up. >> we'll stay tuned. thanks. this morning, berkeley police are looking for a man with a gun who sexually assaulted a teenage girl. here's a map of where it happened on thursday just blocks from the uc berkeley campus. a high school student was walking down the street when she says a man grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth and pointed a gun to her side. police say he sailexually assaud her in a nearby yard. >> i never heard of something like that happening in this proximity. that's scary. >> detectives say they have a vague description of the man. they need any surveillance

videos from nearby homes to help solve this case. three men are under arrest, accused of stealing copper wire. santa rosa police say the group had been targeting the abandoned hospital building for months. about 2,000 feet of copper electrical wire shown here in the back of the suspects' truck was stolen from the old hospital, which closed in 2014. the estimated value, more than $3,600. what do we want? gun control! when do we want it? now. >> bay area students demand tougher gun laws. the walkout took place on the 19th anniversary on the columbine massacre. student say they're angry school shootings are still happening nearly two decades after columbine. >> as long as you have an opinion and you feel really strongly about something, you have every right to go and tell the world, hey, this is what i believe in. >> in san francisco, students marched to city hall and held a rally there. and in oakland, students from skyline high school united on

tulips are out in the countryside. rows of red, yellow and purple. it has us all wishing for spring in america. here on saturday, april 21st, 2018. we will get to dylan's forecast in a moment. an update on the murder of the texas fitness instructor. this week marked two years since missy bevers was murdered. a mother of three. her killer is still on the loose. her family is speaking exclus e exclusively to nbc news. kerry sanders has more. >> reporter: two years after the murder of 45-year-old fitness instructor missy bevers, helps husband brandon remembers her and an -- her husband brandon remembers her as outgoing mother. >> she lived every day to the fullest. >> reporter: missy had gone to the midlothian church to teach a class. a short time later, she was found dead. security camera video caught someone else there, too, dressed in police gear carrying a hammer

or tool which investigators say appears to be consistent with missy's wounds. police don't know if it is a man or woman, but noticed an unusual walk and they were hopeful it would help solve the case quickly. after 1,600 leads, still no arrests in the case. >> i thought within days of missy's murder that somebody would have been apprehended. and i never imagined it taking this long. >> reporter: since the murder, brandon has worried about his three daughters. hannah, then 15, allison, then 13, and sarah, 8. >> and my primary concern is just making sure that my children were emotionally taken care of and they were. >> reporter: brandon says given the tragedy, he is amazed where his children are today. >> i'm absolutely surprised at how far they have come in two years. not to mention what they have

had to live with. >> reporter: now 10, sarah sometimes struggle struggles. >> i'll have tough times. >> reporter: 17-year-old hannah, can think about her mother and smile. >> she was the biggest role model. >> reporter: 15-year-old allison auctioned a pig raising $15,000 to help with the police investigation. when officials said they could not accept the money, she donated it to special needs children. a cause close to her mother's heart. >> she is definitely an inspiration to me. >> very much like her mother. her knee jerk reaction was to find a need for that money. >> reporter: the midlothian police are not giving up on the case. >> i think the main thing is to remain diligent and hold out hope. >> i have faith that this will be solved. i just don't know when. the longer it goes on, the harder it is.

the leader of that country kim jong un saying his country will stop nuclear testing immediately. it is a surprise about face and comes ahead of the meeting with president trump. nbc's lucy kafanov is live with the latest from seoul, south korea. >> reporter: good morning, craig. this is a significant development in the surprising reversal for kim jong un. the north korean leader announcing freezing of nuclear and missile tests. this is still a far cry from dismantling the nuclear weapons program. overnight, an announcement that no doubt stunned north korea and the world. kim jong un said to declare the country quest for nuclear weapons complete. pledging to halt nuclear tests. suspend long-range missile launches and closing a nuclear test site and promising not to transfer weapons or know how to anyone else. the shift coming ahead of two

summits. a meeting with the south korean leader next friday which could pave the way for a face-to-face with the american president next month. president trump sdridescribing news tweeting big progress. look forward to the summit. praise from china and south korea, but caution from japan. prime minister shinzo abe calling for complete verifiable denuclearization. the north korean dictator is not giving up nukes yet. a plen ndge not to use his arse unless provoked. the regime is thought to possess a functioning nuclear weapon and able to hit the united states. the sixth test last november sparking fresh sanctions. kim says it is time to rebuild the country's shattered economy. north korea hand duped the world many times before and resolves this threat will take more than

this book is to remember the food i have eaten and in a way grateful for the memories. also kind of remind people that home cooking has such emotional weight as well. actually you make food that tastes good and simple and makes your life run well. i think it is so easy to be inspired by what the chefs do. i know that. i can be inspired. i actually can't sit down and incorporate one of the recipes in my life. >> that is why i love this recipe. one pan. eight ingredients. i like we have frozen peas. >> you can have it in the freezer. >> easy enough. peas. >> leeks. nice and cold. it is weird. i am saying put frozen peas in the oven. you can. something wonderful happens. you give it extra flair wivor w

leeks. i don't like some are smaller. i would not go that much size. that means some will caramelize more than others. i use vermouth. i'm not a huge drinker. i don't have a bottle of white wine on the go. if you don't want to use alcohol, a bit of chicken stock. i don't mean homemade chicken stock. broth. just helps the flavor of white wine or vermouth. it is white wine mellowed with measure -- with herbs. and garlic. >> i want to ask you about this recipe. we try to get tips from you guys with the tools in the kitchen. what do you like? >> i like something like this.

i cut myself often. this is going in the oven. let it go in. >> what does that do? >> i use this for lemon zest and garlic and ginger. i use a bigger and flatter one normally. the same thing. >> you just dump that right in the there. >> i do. i will get a bit of dill. it is fantastic with thyme. i use this a lot. that is really cold. >> can i say this smells delightful? >> i like this actually. it makes me feel like i'm doing something. i'll put oil. olive oil. not really expensive extra virgin olive oil. we are cooking. >> we have to hurry. >> i go like this. and i go like this. i put the chicken on like that. move along. that's it. it tastes delicious.

good saturday morning to you. it is 6:59. here's a live look outside. through hazy skies, you can see

the sun is shining as we look towards san francisco. from san bruno mountain and it will be a sunny day. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at that microclimate forecast. about an hour ago, we were seeing lots of pink skies, purple skies. >> little bit of haze, but have no fear, it doesn't bring any rain with it. it's just a little haze out there. now right now the south bay, 49 degrees, peninsula, 50 degrees, 45 for the tri-valley and it is nice and sunny, pretty much across the board. you can see some of that haze in the north bay as well. little cooler out there at 44 degrees and east bay, 48, san francisco just dropped down to about 49 as we're peeking into the cooler temperatures for the morning. doppler radar, right now, you can see we don't have much activity going on over the bay area. that's because we have that ridge of high pressure that's been keeping us dry and warm the past couple days and it's on top to kind of warm us up very nicely through the day. the temperature trend in san francisco, just to give you a

little bit of a sneak peek here, by about 1:00 will be in the upper 60s for san francisco, so definitely expect some nice conditions. now, we may be seeing breezier conditions as we head into the evening hours. i'll break all of that down for you coming up in about 15 minutes. >> we'll stayed tuned for that, vianey, thanks. developing news overnight now, one person is dead after a shooting in san francisco and police are still looking for the shooter. it happened around 11:00 last night near the bay
