cellphone video as breaking news last night at 11:00. once the flames were out, they made a tragic discovery. >> a 70-year-old woman did not make it out. >> reporter: so tragic. the woman who lived in the bottom apartment at this apartment building all the way down this steep and narrow stairwell did not make it out. we understand she was 70 years old. the man who lives upstairs says he knew she was down there. he talked to her, tried to get her to come out but she would not leave. >> i could smell the smoke. i went down there and saw the fire. >> reporter: sam says he smelled spoke at 10:00 saturday night. he immediately called 911. then he ran downstairs to make sure his friend and neighbor was okay. >> she was a little out of her

mind. she was just saying, i don't -- she was basketbabbling. >> reporter: the recliner she sits in was on fire. >> she could have followed me up the stairs. we were all yelling to come up. she just wouldn't. >> reporter: neighbors say minutes later, the stairwell leading to her apartment was filled with fire and thick black smoke. >> the rear of the building from the bottom up to the third floor is engulfed. >> reporter: firefighters were arriving and quickly developed an attack plan. a well choreographed plan one neighbor described as a ballet. >> truck 12. >> there was a big fire. the firemen -- the fact that they contained it was amasz iza. >> they did everything they could as far as i could see. >> reporter: three apartments destroyed and neighboring homes damaged.

>> every story she told me was great and filled with life like she was. >> reporter: the tenant upstairs said none of the alarms on the smoke detectors went off in his unit and he did not hear them goes off in other units. the property owner was here on the scene earlier this afternoon. i tried to talk to him about that and others. he said he didn't want to talk. >> thank you very much. the deadly fire is our top story. we have been posting updates and all that was information tom reported since the fire broke out last night. you can find the latest updates on the investigation on air and online. a dramatic rescue after firefighters say a car crashed and was pinned against a trip trapping the two inside. firefighters say it happened 3:30 this morning. not only was the car pinned but it sheered off a power pole and

live electrical wires were on top of the car. the two men inside the car were conscious and talking. they shut down power so crews could safely get to the victims. they were taken to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a live look at capitol hill where an announcement by north korea and its nuclear program is catching the eye of u.s. officials. kim jong-un announced he is sur spending further nuclear weapons tests but stopped short of giving up north korea's nuclear stockpile. president trump is downplaying the announcement ahead of his meeting with him. >> reporter: president trump not putting much faith in kim jong-un's announcement suspending further nuclear weapons tests. tweeting, we are a long way from conclusion on north korea. maybe things will work out and maybe they won't. time will tell. the president and others aware that north korea isn't giving up

its stockpile. >> they made no announcement about medium or short-range ballistic missiles. >> reporter: kim will meet friday with south korea's president, setting the stage for a meeting between kim jong-un and president trump. >> we're not going to stop until they denuclearize. as far as having a meeting, he said, i can walk away. >> reporter: after decades of broken promises, some believe the volatile leader knows the momentum is on the united states' side. >> best case is denuclearization, obviously. is it realistic that he is willy nilly going do that? absolutely not. progress can be made. >> reporter: the trump administration is negotiating with pyongyang for the release of three americans who remain captive in north korea. no mention of that from kim jong-un. this would be the first time a sitting u.s. president will meet with a north korean leader.

zuckerberg testified on capitol hill about the cambridge analytica scandal, nancy pelosi asked them to draft a new bill. they held a town hall. they want input from silicon valley giants. >> i believe we need an internet bill of right. we need people to have a right to their data. >> the bill of rights would be a major test for how much regulation silicon valley tech giants would support. a late night for east bay water crews. look at the water main blakreak. it started at 1:00. water was shut off while crews worked to repair the break. it was shooting so high, it was hitting nearby power lines. you can see right there. crews were called to check for safety. nobody injured. the water main was capped in six hours. another picture perfect day around the bay area.

i mean beautiful out there. people taking advantage of it. there was traffic moving well on the golden gate bridge. our meteorologist tracking how long this will last. >> it looks like we're midway through the warm-up with temperatures in the 80s, including san jose. a breeze picking up at 81 degrees. a little warmer around the tri valley. 82 in dublin. san francisco in the 70s. i notice the wind speed, typical of a summer evening. 21 miles hour, down to 68 degrees. mid 70s along the coast. overall, this april day feeling a bit more like early july. we will continue with mild temperatures. 70s through 7:00. eventually seeing low 50s heading towards tomorrow morning. with the new workweek, same forecast at least through tuesday. 80s possible inland. most interesting part of the forecast comes later this week. temperatures cooling down in

man they say is behind a mass shooting at a waf terror in tennessee. police are hunting for a man they say is behind a mass shooting at a waffle house restaurant. he killed four people but was stopped from killing more by a heroic customer. >> reporter: police say a gunman armed with an assault rifle

killed four people. police believe this is the gunman. they say he arrived at the waffle house after 3:00 a.m. >> he got out of his truck armed with an ar-15 rifle and started shooting. there were two persons outside the restaurant. they were the first ones who were hit both fatally. >> reporter: he entered the restaurant and began shooting. when it stopped, a customer stepped in. >> i ran through the door. i hit him with the door. then the gun was kind of jammed up. it was pushed down. we were scuffling. i managed to get him with one hand on the gun and then i grabbed it from him. i threw it over-the-count t koh. >> reporter: authorities say he saved lives. they recovered a gun. he was known to the secret service since 2017 when he

temperatures more common to june or july. we're getting to enjoy this as we wrap up the weekend. typical when you get warm temperatures inland, late day sea breeze picks up. winds gusting 20 to 30 close to san francisco. wind speeds tapering off as we go through the second half of the evening. through 7:00, still 70s. as we head toward tomorrow morning, numbers tumbling to the upper 40s and low 50s. not exactly a chilly start to the morning. you will need a jacket as you head outside. as we head through the afternoon, we will see temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s once again. you can see areas south of san jose, maybe as warm as the mid 80s. south san jose or campbell tomorrow. coastal temperatures in the 60s. take your pick. if you like 60s and 70s, along

the coast with the sea breeze. we will see a combination of 60s and 70s around downtown san francisco tomorrow. north bay in the upper 70s to low 80s. in terms of clouds, not a lot out there. we have some passing by, high clouds. as we widen things out, there's still storms off to the west. they can't get through the ridge of high pressure west of northern california. at least for the next two to three days, continued dry weather. warm temperatures to wednesday. then the attention begins to shift to see what happens around this area of low pressure. right now, most of the weather models bring it inland to our north. that's the case, the best chance of finding showers later this week will probably be areas north of sonoma county. that's how it looks right now. you can see higher totals on the north coast. we will get a stronger case of ocean air conditioning which will lead to temperatures cooling closer to seasonal averages by around thursday and friday.

demanding and often stressful profession. firefighting is a physically demanding and often stressful profession. >> one south bay woman thinks her life experience has left her in the perfect position to help firefighters deal with those challenges. we have a story that will make you bay area proud. >> reporter: there are many different ways to find your calling. sometimes it's something you are born into. other times, something that comes later in life. or like shanna, it's a combination of both. as a place to find inner peace, station number 1 of santa cruz fire department might not be many people's first choice. >> let's begin the breathing practice. >> reporter: as a place for her to realize her life's mission though, it couldn't be any better. >> it's what i love to do. it's what i was called to do.

it's what many of the experiences in my life led me to do. >> reporter: she grew up in a fire family. her dad a san jose firefighter was on the job for more than 30 years. >> comfortable to be in the fire station. comfortable to be with firefighters. they are like my brothers and sisters. >> reporter: after college, something different. meditation and yoga got her attention. much to the dismay of some parts of her family. >> why is she not plugging in to society, getting a job? >> reporter: years later, in 2014, when she needed a project for a master's degree in leadership, she saw a need she was perfect to fill. >> there's no yoga in the fire station. >> reporter: she devised a program and led a few classes in san jose. the result surprised even her. >> functional fitness was moving. perception of stress was going

down. it was the feedback that they were giving me throughout the first 12 classes that actually changed the course of my life. >> they are getting a chance in their shift to kind of turn their brain off for a minute, to slow things down, focus on their inner self and just let that stress go. >> exhale. >> reporter: she says her knowledge of their world helps her create an environment that firefighters feel comfortable in. like one where it's okay to leave at a moment's notice. >> does anyone have to leave? okay. >> reporter: her fire flex yoga has been so successful, she now has ten instructors working with her in seven cities with more to come. while nobody had to leave to cover that alarm, she says there are classes where firefighters have to leave in the middle of class to go fight a fire. when they get back, they just pick up where they left off.

actions and what witnesses are saying about the devastating fire. >> reporter: that witness, a friend and tenant in the same apartment building lived upstairs. he told me he smelled smoke at 10:00 last night. he immediately went downstairs on the lower unit. there's three floors here. to check on his neighbor. she is 70 years old. he said the cellphone video from the back side of the apartment along seventh avenue shows just how intense that fire was, covering all three floors on the back side with black smoke billowing out. that's where the tenant says he first saw flames when he went downstairs to rescue jessica. he says he was in there but she wouldn't come out. the recliner she often sat in was on fire with the flames climbing up the walls. >> she was there. i saw her. i tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. i was trying to get her out o
