well. >> we do start out with a few changes in the bay area with patchy fog along the coast but it's going to have a big impact on temperatures. as we look outside in palo alto, all clear for your drive and we will get sunshine once that fog clears and temperatures in the low 60s, low 70s today. we'll bring it down a few degrees from yesterday and that will be the trend the rest of the week. mike, you're still tracking the closure at willow pass road. >> a major roadway for folks in concord. as we look at the speed sensors, south bay up towards san francisco or oakland depending which side of the bay even over here mild slowing into livermore, where there's no problems here. there you go. there's a tri-valley contra costa county. just off 242, the scene of the fire which we'll talk about in

just a second affects major roadways and willow pass and concord are closed through the area. our friend ethan is showing us the closure there. a very light traffic right now but folks are having to diverts off grant and heading farther north than they want to but for more on the fire, we'll send it back over to you. >> thank you very much. it is breaking news we're covering from concord this morning. look at the flames, about 80 firefighters still on the scene of this massive fire. it tour through a building under construction overnight. >> that fire so massive it forced a nearby apartment complex to evacuate. many roads evare still closed. pete suratos has a closer look what's left behind. i can only imagine this is going to cause a lot of difficulty for people traveling this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura, it will be a good idea to avoid clayton and galindo this morning.

but we moved up the hill to show you exactly what we're talking about. that construction project that went up in flames not too long ago, i've been calling and texting back and forth with contra costa county fire and they believe they have the fire under control. obviously you still see a lot of smoke here but also as far as injuries go, there are two injuries with two folks minor smoke inhalation is what they are saying, a common injury we see at these types of fires but we'll show you when that fire was going. that was at about 1:00 a.m. when our crews were here on the scene. that fire was first reported in the area where we're standing on clayton road and galindo street. it was under construction, the building we're showing you guys, part of the second phase of what was being called the renaissance apartments. there were evacuation orders in place and they were sent to a nearby plaza to evacuate while fire crews were here trying to control the fire. we have a chance to speak to

more evacuees in the situation, probably scary moments for them. here's what they had to say. >> i mean, when you see the alarm and look outside the window and see a bunch of sparks and ash, it's a different feeling. you go into a shock. my dad burst through the room, get out of the building, go to the opposite way. i can't really -- i can't really describe the feeling. you never think it's going to happen to you until it does and you don't know how to react. >> never thought it could happen to her but it did this morning. we'll take you back out here live, contra costa county says it's under control but we can see flames going there. all together there were 18 fire engines brought out here about 60 firefighters brought out here for this fire. i just got a text from contra costa county fire saying evacuations are still in place for folks who live in the nearby

changed. >> macron is here to convince president trump not to pull out of the deal on may 12th. >> just end the iran deal would be something that would send a wrong signal to kim in north korea. >> the seeds of a deal to shut down north korea's nuclear program and budding new partnership with a long time european ally all just beginning to grow. >> tracie potts, nbc news, washington. new this morning, a burglary suspect drowns in san rafael. we're just getting details about what happened and officers responded to a burglary in a neighborhood off of point san pet dro road. they found a man in the driveway and supposedly ran from them. the suspect jumped into a canal and started struggling. they tried to rescue him but lost him. a dive team eventually found his body. 5:06. students on eardge at berkeley, after jesus diddy came up to her

at the dur rant food court and asked for a hug. she said no and she says he followed her outside to her dorm where he touched her inappropriately. we are working to get the mug shot. police say he matches the description of a suspect in a similar but separate case. a health care at a fairfield school. county health officials are looking into a case of tuberculosis at laurel creek elementary school. we don't know because of patient privacy. parents received a letter and school officials are holding a news conference this afternoon. we'll keep you in the loop once we get that information. >> 5:07. keeping you safe on the roads, april is distracted driving awareness month. it's to get you to understand the importance of paying attention to the road and not your cell phone which is easy for all of us to get distracted. bob redell live near the altamont pass in livermore. we understand one father trying

to get the message across to other teenagers after his son son was killed by a distracted driver. >> good morning to you laura, it should not come as any surprise that a number of these drivers heading westbound on 580 to work this morning here by altamont pass are probably on cell phones as we are all well aware is a big no-no. the national highway traffic safety administration tells us that distracted drivers killed almost 3500 people last year. that's why one father from tracy started the get real behind the wheel driving school at the old altamont raceway where he displays the metal pole involved in his son's fatal accident 11 years ago. he hopes other teens get the message. once a month the racetrack closed since 2008 comes back to life. the difference this time, there's no racing. the speeds are capped at 45 miles an hour and most of the drivers aren't licensed to

drive. some as young as 14 years of age. the school allows parents to teach their sons and daughters how to drive in control of conditions without having to worry about outside traffic. during this past sunday briefing, ken reminded the kids not to text and drive. don't end up like his son mike who has killed 11 years ago in tracie when his friend behind the wheel crashed while reaching for a cell phone. >> sharon and i will never be the same type of people we once were. she shares and mine exuberance to have you stay to the club we belong to. >> it's hard because you'll get a text and want to look at it but you're driving so you don't want to get distracted or end up in an accident. you decide to not to look at the text message. >> there's too many people that don't pay attention. there's too many people that are out there, too much in a hurry,

warming up to the mid-70s but not as warm as yesterday. still feeling summer like with above normal temperatures. it's going to cool off as the week goes along. a look at those temperatures aur your giants forecast in last than five minutes. >> a look at the travel times for the tri-valley. look at the red, 680 southbound past the slowing we saw. i think i've got more insight we'll talk about your drive through the tri-valley and what alternate s you might have to take. >> expect more delays if you're flying southwest. the airline is expected to continue engine inspections for n several days. they canceled 40 flights over the weekend and 129 yesterday. those inspections come after last week's mid-air engine explosion which killed a passenger. the airline says it will take about a month to inspect its entire fleet. >> rent is likely always top of mind for a lot of people and

morning. but temperatures are in the low to mid-50s as you head out getting this tuesday morning started and a look at our day planner for oakland, we'll be at 52 degrees and few clouds through about noon and then we'll get all clear sunshine. temperatures in the low 60s, 7-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen, you'll see we will have some cooler air on the way. as we get a look at highs in the south bay, won't be as warm as yesterday but this is still above normal for this time of year reaching upper 70s and low 80s for the east bay. look for a high of 82 degrees and 78 in fremont. upper 60s for the coast and 69 in san mateo, low 60s around san francisco. the embarcadero, 63 degrees today and 77 in sonoma. if you're heading out to the giants game, it's going to be a nice night for a first pitch at 7:15. we'll see more clouds moving in and will be a touch cooler than

yesterday. breezy ones and it will be in the mid-50s by the end of the game. we make sure your bundled up. here's a look at the reason for the changes that we're going to see. an area of low pressure bringing in some clouds and it's going to take its time making its way inland today but we will see some onshore winds as that area of low pressure moves in. and also a slight chance of rain mostly for the north bay on saturday and then as we go through the rest of the forecast it will be drying out but also cooler with our rain chances once again, very slight for the weekend. otherwise expect partly to mostly cloudy skies and inland areas go from 80 degrees today to 65 degrees on sunday. that will be the high. and those are the type of conditions we'll see as we head into next week. watching out for rain chances on saturday that will mainly be for the north bay and once again it will be fairly slight. right now you have a traffic alert for the try-valley.

>> mystery slowing show s up an more details from our team mates on waze. overall the commute is great but this is the issue, 680 southbound, we have a traffic alert issue by chp. they say southbound 680 you have only one lane open just past highway 84. sounds like there's a crash in the lanes and we're getting more details on the specific for the crash and see the backup forming now out of livermore for 84 as well. a quick check on waze, do you know through the area out of tri-valley and dublin interchange, jammed coming through the area. if you move over and take the longer drive, it only takes five minutes more but you may want too consider castro valley for the time being. back towards our map system, we're showing smooth flow of traffic on these rails, the concern is b.a.r.t. is near the concord fire but it is not affected by the fire. willow pass road is still closed around grant. that will be an issue to 242. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. >> coming up here on "today in

good morning and thank you a live look outside at san jose. as you can see we're getting started with the day. 5:30 right now. thank you so much for starting your morning with "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> it got a little warm in the afternoon yesterday. >> it's going to get warm again today. but for the inland areas reaching in the low 80s but not as warm. we have the return of low clouds and fog. we can see that from the san francisco camera as we're going to see that helping to cool off our temperatures for the day. and keep it mild for the morning. we're right now in the low to mid-50s and we've been watching out for what's happening around concord and today we'll have very light winds but looking at our high temperatures up to 83 degrees and some very light winds and for san jose expect a high of 79 degrees and low 60s for san francisco. also be talking about the weekend but mike, you're still

tracking that alert for sunol. >> a southbound 680 jams up, the rest of the bay moves well, bay bridge toll plaza and metering lights have been turned on and backup is there. that's traditional for your tuesday. look you're jammed up out of pleasanton and that includes 84 on the approach from either side especially out of the livermore and pleasanton drive there. it's because of a crash which is now only -- blocking still lanes there but we have two lanes, two left lanes open over the last couple of minutes, this backup continues to build because traffic flow through the area continues to deepen as you come out of the dublin interchange. over here in concord, 232 moves slowly. in between the two, that's where we're following this fire that's affecting willow pass and concord road. be careful through the area. those are major roadways towards 242. of course you guys have the big issue over there. back to you. >> 5:31. we have the breaking news that we have been following overnight

and this morning. a massive fire in the heart of downtown concord leads to evacuations. several roads are still shut down as firefighters try to clean up the area. >> pete suratos has been live near the concord b.a.r.t. station in morning. as i mentioned earlier on "today in the bay," we're learning about the health alert now for the area. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura and marcus, you have contra costa county health department putting out the advisory about air concerns in this area. if you have respiratory sensitivities of any kind, to be careful because of all of the smoke. i want to look where we're at right you no. this is the scene this building under construction. you can actually still see the flames coming out as fire crews shall working on all of this. as i mentioned, in our last report, contra costa fire saying it's under control at this point but clearly they are still putting out a lot of flames in the area. we're also hearing according to

fire that two people were reported injured with those injuries minor smoke inhalation and still do have those evacuation orders in place as a result of this fire. but we'll show you the fire earlier. this was roughly at around 1:00 a.m. when the fire was first reported on clayton road and galindo street. that apartment building is under construction and part of the second phase of construction of the renaissance apartment building. in fact we want to show you a rendering what the building was eventually going to be, developers broke ground on this second phase of the renaissance back in 2016 with plans to finish it up in the summer of this year and it's going to house 200 apartments. we're talking nearly 200 units going to be lost as a result of this fire and it's not too far from concord from where we're standing. our crews did speak with a mother who had to evacuate with her son. here's what she had to say. >> i started to wake up my

husband, why is everything orange out there. i don't know, well, i don't know. i was nervous, didn't know what to do. i got up and woke up my kids and it was -- i got them out and i went running like crazy and started banging on everybody's houses. >> evacuation orders still in place? okay. and you guys are looking at more video of when the fire was taking place. there were 18 fire engines on the scene with 60 firefighters called out to the scene and that appears and remains to be that same number. going taking you back out here live, you can see the damage, contra costa county fire says it is a total loss, talking about more than $50 million in damages to this building. a total loss at this point. we're going to stay on that and have more live updates and touch base with the fire marshall in just a moment. we'll have more updates for you in the next hour.

pa park. a lot of people are concerned about this with so much information being shared or released without people's permission. >> you always wonder whether or not your post will be taken down. facebook always had rules what you can and cannot post and what will get you boosted from the social media sight outright. new this morning, talk about guidelines facebook posted the internal guidelines and detailed their process of deciding what stays and what goes under seven different categories, they include violence and criminal behavior and extremist groups or people and safety issues like bullying and harassment and sexual content involving children or exploiltation. sexual activity among adults follows under objectional content. integrity and authenticity using false news or false names.

if you had a kids play or musical and had that taken down, that's covered by intellectual property section and explained there. users can also make content related requests on behalf of the deceased people or incapacitated people who cannot make the request on their own behalf. for first time today, facebook is giving ugsers the right to appeal a post. she's wanted to make the guidelines public for five years. adding that the guidelines are revolving and updated weekly. i want to know what you think, i posted a link to the full community standards guidelines on my facebook page. you can join the conversation there and take my twitter poll. at this point it appears that half of the people say yes and having this kind of transparency will help. a quarter of people say it doesn't matter to them, they

deleted facebook already. >> thank you very much, kris. >> new details on washington family whose car plunged over medocino cliff last month. they recovered the bodies of the parents and four children. two other children have not been found. new documents indicate oregon child protective services investigated five years ago and didn't have evidence to pursue a case and new of abuse allegations when the family lived in minnesota. caseworkers in washington went to visit them the next day, the day before they left. and that was just three days before that crash. new details now in the case against the man who police say planned an attack at pier 39. court records show he'll plead guilty, everett aaron jamesson, the agreement snts public just yet. we don't have all of those details but we do have or have covered this story. pleaded not guilty in january o

distributing bomb making information and attempting to aid a terrorist organization. >> it is 5:38, teacher sal rowi and are they enough? this is video of the teachers they were out at san jose's cedar grove elementary trying to explain their case to parents. the teachers tell us they are not thinking about striking just yet. those teachers are joining others in the bay area and across the country demanding raises and more school funding. do they have support? new ap poll finds yes, they do. overnight we look through some of the results and 78% of americans say teachers are way underpaid. 50% say they would pay higher taxes just to give teachers raises but americans are divided over the walkouts and strikes happening, just over 50% support them. >> we support our teachers in general for the work they do. we're looking over here to see

forecast. it's going to be much cooler, low 60s for the coast. the bay a mix of sun and clouds, 64 degrees and we will have a slight chance of rain in the north bay with a high of 65 degrees and just a touch cooler on sunday but we will have sunshine. it will feel definitely more like spring around the bay area. if you're planning to go to napa valley on friday, mostly sunny skies, 66 degrees and on saturday, we'll be watching out for the chance of rain, otherwise a mix of sun and clouds and if you're going to santa cruz, it's going to be a cool weekend not like the weekend we just had, only reaching near 60 degrees with partly cloudy skies throughout the weekend. and if you're planning to head a bit farther south, mostly sunny skies and all weekend long and highs in the mid-70s. i'll have a look at today's temperature trend for san jose coming up on the other side of the break. look forward to it, thanks. >> coming up next, stepping up patrols the peninsula
