right now. >> we begin with another look at the massive fire overnight. one of several photos sent to us overnight while the fire watt at its peak. it's behind the theater with the glow of the fire behind. it was pretty massive. could be seen for miles. now health concerns this morning. let's say good morning and thanks for joining us. >> we'll have full coverage of that fire if just a moment. first let's check on as you head out the door, kari is here with the weather. >> right now bringing us clouds and we've seen the return of the fog near the coastline as we look at the satellite imagery. you can see the swirl of the clouds just offshore and it looks to be pretty dry as it moves into the bay area. but we will have stronger onshore flow. you can see those lines -- the direction of the wind as we go

into the next couple of days and with that we'll have very slight rain chances into the weekend and early next week. 7-day forecast shows we will have some much cooler air moving in, san francisco heading back through the upper 50s and inland areas go from 80 today to the mid-60s by saturday. i'll be tracking this and more and mike, you're focused on two key spots on the road. >> a light traffic for the most part. bay bridge toll plaza that's not a surprise. my focus is over here for first one. the tri-valley. look at southbound 680 and 84 getting out of livermore and pleasanton ajammed up and the improvement is not because lanes are clear. we only have two left lanes open. there's been a shift in the approach to the crash scene and jammed out of pleasanton and heading down towards fremont out of sunol. the other issue is not the freeway, 242 is moving smoothly. getting there a problem on

willow pass. i pull on a local traffic flow. you can see right there at grant and concord avenue, a lot of activity because of the fire. our live look from ethan, our photographer shows us this is grant street. normally they take willow pass. they will not. they continue pass and the north side of the park will get you to concord avenue on 242. the reason for the closure right back to you guys. >> that's right, continuing coverage we've had all morning long since we came on the air. breaking news in the east bay. look at the size of this fire. you'll understand why firefighters still at the scene of it. it broke down -- broke out in downtown concord overnight. >> pete suratos was there when we first came on the air at 4:30 and joins us now live to bring us up to speed on that investigation. any new developments? >> reporter: good morning, to you. it's all still under.

they don't know exactly what the cause is but we do know what was in the past hour that we got the public health advisory of air concerns if you're near this area near clayton and galindo. not much smoke as far as air issues here but it is the concern if you have respiratory issues. i want to show you what we're looking at, the apartment building under construction that went up in flames, a total loss according to contra costa county fire. they are saying it is under control. however we're seeing flames that there's still battling front of us, i believe they are saying it's only contained to this specific building. as far as injuries go, we're being told there were two injured as a result of smoke inhalation, minor smoke inhalation but evacuation orders are still in place for folks that lived in the nearby building. we're showing you the flames from earlier when the fire was first reported roughly around 1:00 a.m. near clayton and

galindo. this was supposed to be the renaissance square, that was the big plan here on the site. folks at the nearby apartment building as i mentioned were evacuated as a result of those flames. you see that big fire taking place just a few hours ago. our crews did speak with evacuees after the fire broke out. here's what they were saying as far as describing what they saw with the fire. >> i mean, when you see the alarm and look outside the window and see a bunch of sparks and ash, it's a different feeling. you go into a shock. my dad burst through the room and he's like get out of the building, go the opposite way. i can't really -- can't really describe the feeling. you never think it's going to happen to you until it does and you just don't know how to react. >> taking you back out here live, you can see crews still on scene. more than 18 fire engines here as well as 60 firefighters and as i mentioned, that building is

to grow. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> at 6:08, new this morning, a burglary suspect drowns in san rafael. we're getting details about what happened. officers say they responded to a burglary in the neighborhood off of point san pedro road and found a man in a driveway. they say he ran from them. but the suspect jumped into a canal to escape and started struggling. they tried to rescue him but lost him. a dive team eventually found his body. >> there was a health care at a fairfield school. looking into a case of tuberculosis. we don't know anything about the sick person because of patient privacy but parents received a letter about the highly contagious infection. school officials are holding a news conference this afternoon. we'll go there and keep you in the loop once we know more information. all new this morning, keeping your safe on the road. april is distracted driving awareness month. and it is to get you to

understand the importance of paying attention to the road and not your cell phone. bob redell is live near altamont pa pass. one father is striing trying toe message across after his son was killed by a distracted driver. >> reporter: good morning, as we watch these drivers heading into work on westbound 580 this morning, it's quite likely a number of them are on their cell phones, which as we all know is a big no-no. the highway traffic safety administration tells us distracted drivers killed almost 3500 people last year. that's why one father from tracie started the get real behind the wheel driving school. this is at the old altamont raceway where ken uchi displays the metal pole involved in his son's fatal accident. he hopes other teens get the message. once a month, the trace track

reopens and the speeds are capped at 45 miles per hour and most of the drivers aren't yet adults. some as young as 14 years of age. the school allows parents to use this course to teach their sons and daughters how to drive in conditions that are safe and controlled during this past sunday, safe briefing, ken reminded the kids, don't end up like his son mike when his friend behind the wheel crashed reaching for a cell phone. >> it's just hard because you'll get a text or something and you want to look at it but you're driving, don't want to get distracted or ends up in an accident. you decide not to look at the text message. >> there's too many people that don't pay attention. there's too many people that are out there too much in a hurry and they are not paying attention to what they are doing or what's going on around them. >> more importantly, you've got to put the cell phone in the glove compartment, it's off limits. >> reporter: get real behind the

nimitz freeway starting to pick up in volume. looking good along the bay but it is southbound 880 where there's a crash and i'm concerned it may be in the lanes slowing you down towards the san mateo bridge. we're just seeing the build there. the big problem is farther east the tri-valley jams up for south 680 through pleasanton and sunol, the crash still blocking lanes and the southbound direction. and it also jams up the traffic for 84 out of livermore and pleasant dszon past the ge plant. niles may be an alternate. oakland, 880, good drive past the coliseum. taillights towards the bay bridge toll plaza and san rafael bridge showing volume starting to build. no problems, no real problems for east shore freeway. >> hope it stays that way. 6:11, coming up next, the reason you should expect more delays however if you're flying southwest any time soon. plus, runaway giraffe, that

temperatures today. here's a live look in palo alto. our temperature trend, upper 50s over the next couple of hours and today we will still have a nice one once the sun breaks out late morning, up to 71 degrees at 4:00 today and it will be cooler as the week goes along. i'll have a look at that and look at the giants forecast in less than five minutes. this is a live shot here. folks coming towards us on grant street, where they cannot go is willow pass road towards 242, that's where the flashing lights are. fire activity in concord and i'll show you the traffic alerts for the try-valley coming up. >> thanks, kari and mike. students on edge at berkeley after a man reportedly grabbed a student on monday. the girl says jesus dicky came up to her and asked for a hug. she said no and then says he followed her to outside of her

dorm room where she says he touched her inappropriately. we're working on getting his mugshot, police say he matches a description in a similar but separate case. more delays on southwest. the airline is expected to continue engine inspections for next several days. the dallas based carrier canceled 40 flights over the weekend, 129 yesterday. the inspections come after last week's med mid-air engine explosion which killed a passenger. it will take a month to inspect the entire fleet. google is celebrating good economic news. >> for that and rest of the news about the bell we go live to brian sullivan at cnbc world headquarters. >> marcus and laura, thank you very much. your stock investments hoping to break a four-day losing streak today as long as bay area companies help us out overall. the futures indicating the dow will likely open up.

we have been down four sessions in a row concerned about the big tech companies around you guys. you may not have noticed, apple stock down 7% in a week. we're watching to see if that can turn around but watching alphabet in reported earnings beat the street, sales growth pretty good. company also marked up the value of the investment in uber by a couple billion dollars but it is not all wine and roses over there in mountain view. some investors getting worried that google spending keeps going up keeping margins under pressure. couple of analysts cutting price targets on the stock. if you're driving around in your electric car and frustrated by lack of charging stations at the trip mall, don't worry, target wants to help. retailer planning to add plug-ins at more than 100 stores across 20 states over the next couple of years. that should at 600 new parking spaces but electric only and don't let me see your diesel powered hummer in that spot. >> you know you are reporting to the bay area, right?

have a few of those clouds through 9:00. look at 10:00, 62 degrees and all clear and sunny and reaching in the mid-70s for the afternoon. that morning drive through the peninsula, we'll see the clouds a little bit longer and it will be a mostly sunny today and touch cooler with some breezy winds at 2:00 there, up to 69 degrees, 7-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen showing big cooldown over the next few days. but today we're still taking in the warmer weather in the south bay, up to 80 in morgan hill. cuber teen no, 77 degrees and 70 in hayward and walnut creek. expect a high of 80 there and 69 degrees in san mateo. san francisco low 60s today. we're breaking it down from the 70s and the north bay will still reach in the 70s, even up to 80 in napa today. heading out to at&t, you'll have nice weather this evening but it will be cool and breezy and clouds will move back in. first pitch will be at 58

degrees and i'm watching this storm system very weak one, mostly just bring an increase in cloud cover and it will bring in more clouds and also a slight chance of rain for the weekend. mostly for the north bay as it passes to the north of the state. and then heading into the early parts of next week, we still keep these cooler temperatures with the stronger ocean breeze kicking in. as we go into the forecast, we go from 80 today to the mid-60s by the weekend. slight chance of rain for the north bay. mike, you've been tracking quite a few traffic issues in the east bay, right? >> exactly, east bay and tri valley. overall the commute looks great but we have problem spots, one of the main ones focus on pleasanton and sunol drive. jamming up 84 and 680. still no change just two lanes open there. we get you out to our waze system and show you what difference is now that the

jose woman who was left hot under the collar after she received her recent p-g-and-e bill. it was more than (double ( what 6:24, a san jose woman was left hot under the color after a recent pg&e bill double what she normally pays. >> when her usage charges didn't add up she contacted us, here's chris chmura. >> good morning. dawn o'brien said she was shocked to get an electric bill for $453 over the summer. considering she usually pays about $200 per month. she says pg&e told her that's just how much power she used during the month according to her meter. that didn't make any sense to dawn. she doesn't have air conditioning so the heat wave shouldn't have burnt her. she called us. we contacted pg&e and the utility discovered dawn actually didn't use that much electricity after all. the meter reader had made a

mistake. the utility promptly gave her a $187 credit. pg&e encourages customers like dawn to contacts them with billing questioning and also says smart readers hen rehelp reduce billing mistakes and don't cost anything extra. it currently has 10 million smart readers in use. you can make that 10 million and one because dawn is getting a smart reader. if you have a consumer complaint, please call us. 1-888-996-tips on log on to nbcbayarea.com/responds. 6:26 right now. the first responders who help kids and teachers during parkland school shooting are getting financial aid. the department of justice is giving a 1 million dollar grant to first responders, 17 people were killed in the school shooting on valentine's day. a lot of law enforcement agencies had unexpected calls from responding to the shooting like over time so that grant will cover those expenses.

or hazardous chemicals in the air that you'll have if you have breathe beiing problems, our temperatures are starting in the low to mid-50s. after the cloudy start we will get sunshine. we're going to be in the low 80s today for those inland areas and low 60s for the coast and south bay up to 79 degrees today. also be tracking the weekend forecast coming up in about seven minutes. mike has an update for the tri-valley. >> what we've been waiting for, it is all clear, all lanes cleared from the crash over here on 680. give you a second to check your commute no matter where you're driving. this should recover, 680 south and 84 then we'll also show some clearing but a lot of folks heading through niles this morning, that's a tough and windy road. be patient if that is your drive. if not, stick it out for another few minutes, we'll see good improvements out of pleasanton. the crash has cleared all lanes

of south 680 through sunol. 242 shows more slowing and we expect to see out of concord. this is also a tough drive getting to 242. there's traffic control too. you'll have to use concord avenue farther north. go around the plaza because of the fire activity. what fire you're asking? that's what we have been following all morning. >> that's right, mike. it broke out overnight. take a look at the size of these flames, firefighters trying to fight it from all angles. it was a massive fire that ripped through a construction site. it was an apartment building for many but not anymore. pete suratos joins us live from the scene, includingi a health warning for those who live close to here. pete? >> reporter: that health alert is still in place. that advisory being put out about 5:00 a.m. of smoke in the area as a result of this massive

fire on clayton and gal inlynn do. if you have a res per tri issue, you're being warned about smoke inhalation. you're seeing damage there and you can see the parking garage in the middle. i'm get to that in a moment as far as difficulties to put out the fire, which contra costa county says is under control at this point. we'll show you the flames from when the fire took place. it was reported at about 1:00 a.m. and they are saying two people were injured as a result of that from minor smoke inhalation and the shot we showed you, under construction, this apartment building that would have been known as renaissance square. the mfire marshall says when th fire was in the advanced stages, they were limited to fighting it from the outside first. they were attacking the inside

later on. during this morning's show weed weed -- they were still battling from the inside. our crews spoke with a mother who had to evacuate had her son. here she is describing the moments when the fire took place. >> i open my eyes and everything was orange in my backyard. i'm like, oh, my god. i started to wake up my husband, why is everything orange out there? oh, i don't know, i don't know. i was like nervous, didn't know what to do. i got up and woke up my kids and once i got them out, i went running like crazy and started banging on everybody's houses. >> all together contra costa county fire says 18 fire engines were brought out to fight the fire more than 60 firefighters

sanchez lives us live from menlo pa park. some people are curious about, facebook in the headlines these days. >> reporter: that's true, laura. facebook is pulling back the curtain a little bit showing us for first time publicly what goes into those community standards that users had to live by without knowing truly what they were. now new this morning, those guidelines were made public as these are internal guidelines that detail the process of what stays and goes under seven different categories. they include violence and criminal behavior, including credible threats extremist groups or people. safety, like bullying and har s harass. and sexual content involving children or sexual exploilt ace. adult sexual content falls under objectional content as does halt speech. integrity and authenticity addresses false news and false names. and if you have had a post

removed because of music in it or one of your kids plays or something like that, that is covered under the intellectual properties section. users can also make content related request for removal on behalf of the deceased people or people who can no longer make decisions for themselves. for first time today, facebook is giving users, the right to appeal. facebook head of policy and counter terrorism told the associated press she wanted to make guidelines public for five years, adding that the glide lines are resolving and updated weekly. i did post a poll whether you think knowing the guidelines helps. a third of people say yes and half say it doesn't matter because they already deleted facebook anyway. conversation is ongoing both on twitter and on my facebook page. i would love to hear what you think today. in menlo park, "today in the bay." >> new details on the washington

family whose car plunged over the mendocino cliff last month. teams recovered the bodies of parents and four children, two of the other children bodies have not been found. a new document indicates that oregon child protector services investigated when the family lived there but didn't have enough evidence to pursue the case. they also knew about abuse allegations when the family lived in minnesota. the caseworkers in washington went to visit them the day they left three days before that crash. 6:39. former president george h.w. bush is in the hospital this morning. we learned he has an infection that spread to his blood. in a statement released to bush's office, treatment is said to be going well and he's said to be recovering. he was admitted sunday morning just one day after attending his wife's funeral. >> wish him well. over here we look live. i'll step into the shot but photographers on street level.

coming towards us this is grant street coming towards us where they cannot turn is willow pass road. folks familiar with the concord area, that's the area where it will have to travel to 242. let me explain the maps here. we're talking about the concord fire. our map system, we're showing that surface tree track which gets cluttered but this is where the fire is and pete reported there. folks are going around the plaza to 242 because willow pass is currently cut off with activity. >> slow through contra costa but no surprises, bay bridge toll plaza slow and recovery continues in the area i circled. 680, all lanes are cleared threw sunol. >> a cooler weekend too. this weekend i went to the beach and enjoyed hiking and this

weekend, i think it's going to be something inland. i don't know, i haven't quite made the plans yet but yeah, it's going to be in the low to mid-60s all around the bay area and there will be a slight chance of rain in the north bay. on sunday more of the same. not the best beach weekend but you'll be able to enjoy your time outdoors with some sunshine. heading to napa valley, that will be a great idea. we'll be watching out for a slight chance of rain on saturday. other than that it looks really nice, up to 70 degrees on sunday with some sunshine. and then if you're going to santa cruz, once again it's going to be cool out there and very breezy with a mix of sun and clouds, up to 60 degrees. for warmer temperatures, head down to passo robles with sunshine. we'll see a weekend with highs in the mid-70s all weekend long. let me know what you're doing, you'll be able to see the forecast right here at 6:38 every morning. also, you may get a personalized forecast if you're heading out

good tuesday morning, it is 6:45. looks a little different outside. we can't see the sunrise. it's not clear and we will see the clouds clearing out today but a hint that we are going to be in for some changes. by 10:00, we get to mostly sunny skies in campbell and it will warm up into the mid-70s today. which is still above normal. but the cooling trend continues as we go through this week. i'll talk about that and also slight rain chances in the forecast coming up in less than five minutes. these travel times believe it or not are improving, 680 and 84, at the bottom, starting to show a little shorter drive as you travel through the earlier sigalert area. oakland shows no such problems, little haze but the traffic flows nicely. >> thanks kari and mike. the canadian man accused of driving a van into crowds of

being treated for overdoses at a northern california prison. investigators are trying to figure out how drugs are being smuggled into mule creek. prison cells are being sealed and cleaned by hazmat teams. a man suspected of setting a deadly fire in china is arrested. the fire at the three story building killed 18 people today. police say the suspect set fire to a karaoke parlor after getting into an argument. more news after this break.

welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top stories on today in the bay-- the time is 6:55, before you head out the door, here are the top stories. >> we have a live look from downtown concord, public health advisory is in place after a massive fire broke out overnight. you see firefighters still at the scene trying to quench some of those hot spots. people living near the area may make up with breathing problems. they may have an even tougher time today. already firefighters helped two people who breathe in smoke. they were treated for that. we've been showing you video of the flames all morning. it broke out overnight. this was the apartment building under construction. no one was living there but people living in a nearby building were evacuated. not far from the concord b.a.r.t. station, the current estimate is the fire cost $50 million in damage.

eco-friendly beauty products. burglary and drowning in the north bay started as a burglar report in san rafael. officers say they found a man in the driveway but he ran away. they say he jumped into a canal and started struggling. they tried to help him but he went under the water and drowned. a dive team found his body. we're hoping to learn more about a health scare at the fairfield school. health officials are looking into the case of tuberculosis at laurl creek elementary school. parents got a letter alerting them about the dangerous virus. the health department will give an update later today. a live look along the altamont pass in livermore, distracted driving not only there but really ever where. it can be a danger. april is distract the driving awareness month. to drive the message home, one father who lost his son to distracted driving is trying to spread the message.
