year. president bush has been hospitalized numerous times over the last four years. at 93, the nation's longest living president used a motorized scooter and wheelchair. he's been diagnosed with a rare syndrome that mimics parkinsons. he was by his wife's side until the very end. >> he held my mom's hand all day long. i called him and he said i'm kind of a cry baby right now. >> reporter: just days after celebrating barbara's life including this photo with three other presidents, melania trump tweeting she's sending heals thoughts of strength along with prayers to president george h.w. bush. mrs. bush's death marked the end of the longest presidential marriage in history. >> to know you love me means my life. >> reporter: the patriarch of a political dynasty just days ago surrounded by his family and

when a driver ran into pedestrians on a sidewalk there, authorities now trying to piece together what they say was a deliberate act. ron mott is in toronto. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, craig. good morning to you. officials who've been briefed on this investigation both here in canada and the u.s. tell nbc news the leading theory right now is mental illness and not terrorism though that is subject to change. the suspect was arrested and taken into custody without incident. the officials continue to search for clues. chaos and carnage on a well known street in toronto. the man behind the wheel of this rented white ryder van drove the vehicle onto a crowded sidewalk leaving death and injury in his path. >> get down! >> reporter: video capturing the arrest of 25-year-old driver alec mansian in a standoff with police officers. the police chief saying contrary

to initial reports, the suspect was not carrying a gun. >> the actions definitely looked deliberate. >> reporter: the witnesses describing a frantic scene. people flying into the air after being struck, others thrown to the ground. bystanders rushing to help who they could. >> i stopped all the cars and then just pandemonium broke loose. everyone was going crazy. i feel sick to my stomach. what can i say? just never seen anything like this before. >> whoever did this i hope this sick person gets dealt with organize accordingly. >> reporter: while the driver's actions seemed intentional, police don't believe it was a case of terrorism. >> on the basis of all available information at the present time, there would appear to be no national security connection to this particular incident. >> reporter: the tragedy

happened while g7 foreign officials are meeting in canada. justin trudeau tweeting our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident. monday night the toronto maple leafs holding a moment of silence before their playoff hockey game. officials worked overnight to identify the victims and make next of kin notifications. in the meantime, we are expecting to see the suspect in court later this morning. craig? >> all right. ron mott for us in toronto. we turn now to washington where it is down to business today for president trump and emmanuel macron ahead of the administration's first state dinner which is later tonight. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has more on this busy day ahead. hi, kristen. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is a day of high stakes foreign policy and it's underway here at the white house with president trump welcoming the leader of america's oldest ally french president macron.

tennessee waffle house sunday and opened fire with an ar-15. killed in the attack, four victims. what type of guy was he? >> he was wonderful. he always showed up. he was kind of our rock on third shift. >> reporter: overnight an emotional vigil for the victims. >> there is a tremendous sadness. >> reporter: attended by the brave customer who wrestled the rifle from the gunman. >> the real reason i don't want to be called a hero is anybody thatt position, you can do it. >> reporter: investigators say days before the shooting, reinking stole a bmw from this dealership and led police on a chase seen in this dash cam video. officers didn't connect the vehicle to reinking until after the massacre. >> he shows signs of significant instability. >> reporter: reinking once

are face disciplinary charges and possible expulsion over that racist video that emerged online. and now, a second video has surfaced. nbc's morgan radford is following this story. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in the wake of the first video, the school expelled the theta tau fraternity. now, a second video, that is being released by "the daily orange" is plunging syracuse deeper into a crisis. and a warning, this video is difficult to watch. >> he's retarded and in a wheelchair. >> reporter: this morning, growing outrage over a second, shocking video in the syracuse university fraternity scandal. these members of the theta tau chapter seem to be simulating a sexual assault of a person who has disabilities and while laughing. >> he isn't aware of what's occurring. >> reporter: on monday, after interviewing 39 people, university officials announced

that 18 students are facing conduct charges on campus. >> everything is on the table, from suspension to expulsion. >> reporter: university officials say the disciplinary process should take about two weeks. on saturday, the university permanently expelled the engineering fraternity after this first video emerged, filled with lewd behavior and racial slurs. >> i solemnly swear. >> i solemnly swear. >> to always have hatred in my heart for. >> to always have hatred in my heart for. >> [ bleep ]. >> reporter: the chapter didn't respond for comment. but previously apologized and initially said the sketch wasn't intended for hate, but as a satire of intolerance. in a statement on sunday, syracuse's chancellor said the school knew about the second video last week. now calling it appalling and disgusting.

and adding, i ask all of us who care about our community and its values to reaffirm them by emphatically rejecting all this video represents. following the release of the first video, theta tau's national fraternity releasing its own statement. the content of the video is unacceptable and directly violates the values and expectations that are put in place for all of our chapters. amid protests on campus, some syracuse students say they're not surprised by what they saw in the videos. >> greek life is an important part of the campus. but it definitely needs to be looked into and scrutinized a lot more. >> the school says they won't be identified because of federal privacy laws. but the district attorney, a syracuse graduate himself, said the university asked him to look into the case but there was no crime committed. instead, he says it's just plain stupidity. school officials announcing a campus conversation that is scheduled for wednesday. that will include the syracuse

hitting the highest level in three years. why? and what does it mean for the busy summer driving season? tom costello is in maryland with more on that. >> reporter: aaa says the national average is 2.76 a gall gallon. that's up 30 cents in a year. but listen to this, it's up 22 cents in a month. and in some parts of the country, they're paying more than 4 bucks a gallon. it wasn't that long ago when these were the headlines -- >> analysts say gas under a dollar could be on the way ifn lot of places. >> reporter: after hitting a low in 2016, gas prices are back up to their highest in years. >> with 10 bucks, you only get three gallons. >> reporter: the national average, $2.76 per gallon and rising. the west coast is paying the most, 3$.15 in oregon. $3.25 in washington state. $3.58 in california.

some parts of the state are already topping $4 a gallon. >> my tank is about $65. i'm filling up twice a week. >> reporter: aaa says only one-quarter of stations across america are selling gas for less than $250. the state with the cheapest gas, missouri at $2.45. but even there, prices are trending up. the price of crude oil has surged to $68 a barrel for the first time since 2014. driven by military strikes in syria, fear of more global unrest and opec production cuts. >> a situation in syria, all of these geopolitical events do add to what we pay at the pump. >> reporter: mix that with travel season, and refineries making the switch to their costlier summer gas blends and it adds up fast.

gas will cost about $200 more per household. if your car requires premium, prepare to pay a premium, 50 cents more a gallon. back in july 2008, the national average peaked at $4.11. experts don't expect that surge this year. if we're lucky, prices could level off by memorial day. the pain at the pump bearable for now. >> unless it goes up to $10 a gallon, then we'll be back on the bike. >> reporter: i'm not getting on the bike. a couple of tips here. first of all, you can drive a mile down the road and sometimes find much cheaper gas. use the apps that search for cheaper gas. gas buddy has an app that allows you to do that. and join the loyalty programs of some of the gas station chains. that can save $5 to $10

good tuesday morning, i'm meteorologist kari hall. right now at 7:56 we walk out and see a lot of cloud cover. that's what we're seeing right now in san francisco with temperatures in the low 50s and as we go through the day it's only going to reach up to 62 degrees in san francisco. but 76 in santa rosa. the inland areas will still be very warm today as the skies clear by late morning into early afternoon. we'll see a high of 81 degrees in antioch and 80 in livermore. over the next few days a cooling trend will be under way with highs in the upper 50s in san francisco and mix of sun and clouds and slight rain chance on saturday for areas around san francisco and farther to the north. other than that we continue on with dry weather with highs today up to 80 degrees and only reaching the 60s by the ends of the workweek. let's get a update on the

today. >> pino grigio was my favorite. and what my life looked like in young kids, going to a play group in the park and often, we would gather at one of our apartments in the afternoon and unwind and connect and drink wine. >> i would pour a glass of wine and start the evening routine of homework and baths and bedtime and dinner. and by the end of the night, i would consume a bottle of wine. >> i would drive sometimes in the car with wine. i thought that i deserved to have wine because i was doing this really hard thing and i was working and taking care of a kid full-time. i didn't see really any problem with it. >> so, those women have all moved forward in their lives and are now helping other moms in their community find their own sobriety. two out of the three identify as alcoholics. one says she was just abusing it too much. >> did they hit rock bottom

before they needed help? >> one did. one had a dark incident with her child, who was fine. but it was her wake-up call. and the other two realized it was interfering with their lives. and they talk about the anxiety they felt as a result of parents and the stresses and being working moms where they felt their lives spinning out of control. i'll tell you what, something really interesting. the producers booked these segments. it's a great idea. book it. and then, last week, i get an e-mail from my producer saying, just a heads up, one of the moms we booked for this segment is a friend of yours. and i didn't know. i didn't know. so, she's coming on today with our entire circle of friends there to support her as she talks about her journey. >> i think every mom can relate to feeling stress and maybe i'll have a little glass of wine and how dangerous it can be and how easily you can slip into something that's much more serious. >> slippery slope, exactly. just ahead, we're going to be bringing people together this

we are back on this tuesday morning with more of our special series, "together today." on monday, we focused on the loneliness epidemic and the health risks that come with social isolation. >> the question is what do we do about it. kate snow is here with more. >> reporter: a lot of response to that yesterday. it is a daunting challenge to identify a loved one or an acquaintance that might be feeling lonely and draw them out when sharing is about the last thing they want to do. we're about to show you an ambitious program trying to fastfast foster connections. when he was surgeon general, he traveled the country and said he was struck by the crippling

isolation felt by so many. >> our country and our world are filled with people who have thousands of friends on facebook and who are alone. >> reporter: the british government are so concerned about a loneliness epidemic, it appointed its first-ever minister for loneliness in january. they're urging people to get involved. >> we all have a responsibility to try to encourage that connectivity within our communities, whether that is a small community of your own street, or if that's the wider neighborhood. >> reporter: here in the u.s., one group looking for solutions calls itself the unlonely project, founded by harvard dr. jeremy nobel. >> the answer is to connect people. >> reporter: it's kind of common sense. >> and the question is how do we do it? how do we get people to slow down and connect with

themselves? >> reporter: we joined him at the school of the art institute of chicago, where the unlonely project has partnered up to foster community. joe is the institute's wellness program director. people think of college are a happy, joyful time. are you seeing loneliness? >> absolutely. i think on college campuses there's never been so much loneliness. >> reporter: this day, a group of students and staff came together to make art. each told to think about someone they care about while they worked. >> my best friend's favorite animal is the giraffe. i wanted to make one. >> reporter: how do you feel when you're working on a piece of art? >> it's very calming. >> reporter: if you're making art by yourself alone in a room, that's one thing. but you're getting people together to make art together. is that part of it, too. >> a big part of what we promote in our programming is to do three things. first, to make art. then, to share that art with someone else. and then, the third is to have the other person receive that art in an active, curious way. what are you thinking about?

what does this art mean for you? when you do that, it's like closing an electric circuit and people are connected. the arts are powerful in that. >> reporter: the key is doing activities together. it doesn't have to be making art. >> it's how you frame that activity as a chance to truly recognize who the other person is, who you are, and share that through some shared activity. a walk in the woods, a walk on the beach, doing some funny, playful things together. but then, spend the time chatting, talking about it. >> reporter: i joined in. that's a sun and that's a moon. in tend, he end, we laid our ar the floor, coming together as a collective masterpiece. i'm not an artist. but it didn't matter, right? i'm no good at doing art. i was thinking about my son when i was making that. at one point, i started to well up because there's something

about being creative that does bring your emotions forward and sharing it with other people is special. >> we don't take time to do that as busy adults anymore. the actions are so important. and we started this thing yesterday, it's called "together today" challenge. and we asked you to connect with somebody. share your photos with #togethertoday. we tried to do it, too. >> if i'm not traveling and i'm home, i make sure that calvin and i eat dinner together at 5:00 every night. this is me and my date night, just eating dinner. >> nick's a big yankee fan. last night, they were playing the twins. so, nick and i got together and we just sat in the family room and watched tv. pepper joined in. she was more interested in looking at deborah taking the picture. >> i went to pick up dell yesterday from school. he insisted on some playground time after school. we struck up a conversation at the playground with some ladies there. and one of the moms talked

candidly about being lonely and how being a single mom can kind of -- not a single mom but being a stay-at-home mom can breed loneliness. we had a fascinating conversation about that on the playground. >> that's an example of being around people. you're around your kids but you can feel lonely. vale and i had serious hide and seek yesterday. a little picture of her looking as cute and, yes, i found her. >> i actually reconnected with my friend, megan. we went for a beautiful walk. it was gorgeous out yesterday. and my dog is hidden by the banner there. >> it's a good reminder. but doing something quality with someone can fill your heart. >> and putting the phone away and talking and really connecting. >> take the picture and then put the phone away. >> so, we've been watching your photos, speaking of, coming in
