tuesday morning, we're here to get you started and ready for the weekend. it is seconds before 5:00. a live look at san francisco. it's cloudy out there, at least the monitor i'm looking at. meteorologist kari hall will look at that and explain what's going on. thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> a cooling trend coming? >> cooler over the next several days. we start out with a blanket of clouds as you get ready to head out. temperatures now in the mid-50s but some upper 40s in north bay and santa rosa 49 degrees. then as you head to hiking trails in the east bay, i like to call the clouds natural shade. we will get sunshine today and low 60s for the afternoon with breezy winds. look at all of our high temperatures. still some low 70s for inland area, livermore 71, san jose 70, san francisco 57 degrees. i'll have a look at the complete

microclimate forecast. mike already tracking a little delay for b.a.r.t. riders. >> a little more delays. a 20-minute delay for the fremont line. apparently unscheduled maintenance work they had to throw in there. an equipment problem going on right now and that's what's becauseing that to happen. bart fremont line 20 minutes and growing. we'll continue to track that. sounds like the rest of the bart system is moving, the rest of the rails, those are on schedule. as we get out to maps looking at roadways. a little police 24 eastbound typically happens now. they always move equipment around this time. this equipment appears to be clearing but that construction had one lane closed in, a lot of activity eastbound through eden canyon and castro valley. that does appear to be improving and the rest of the bay shows an easy drive right now. back to you, marcus. >> thanks so much. 5:01 right now and breaking news to tell you about. president trump pick to lead department of veterans affairs

with drew his nomination. it happened moments ago. allegations boutd ronny jackson since allegations came to light. jackson released a statement saying those allegations are completely false and fabricated. those include drinking on the job and misprescribing drugs. we'll continue to follow the story. scott mcgrew will break this down and his analysis at 5:45. the decades long search for golden state killer may be over. the man authorities say was responsible for 12-year reign of terror dating back to '70s and '80s. a former police officer joseph deangelo, he committed 12 murders, 45 rapes, and 120 home burglaries. eleven of those happened right here in the bay area. in fact we have a map where authorities say the golden state killer struck. all the attacks happened in the east and south bay as well. the latest happening in july of

1979. after so many years people wondering how investigators caught up with him. pete suratos in alamo. what we're learning about the man who did these heinous acts. it's almost fascinating now, reads like a crime thriller, pete. >> reporter: no doubt about it. you mentioned briefly he worked as a cop. joseph deangelo worked briefly as a cop for the police department for three years. the auburn journal uncovered a picture of him during that time. we can go ahead and show viewers the picture. you can see he's there during his time as auburn police officer between 1976 and 1979. he is the man with the moustache in that picture. according to auburn police, he was fired in 1979 for shoplifting. law enforcement officials said during a press conference yesterday that it's possible he may have been committing crimes

as the golden state killer while he was working as an officer. decades now after he committed toss heinous crimes residents in that stu of auburn where he served as a police officer for a few years are feeling a sense of relief knowing he's behind bars. >> we were scared. everybody had to shut up the house and lock the cars at night. yeah. so we're real relieved he was caught. >> i hope they don't go lightly on him. he's created a lot of pain for a lot of people. >> reporter: of course we're getting more details on the life he was living prior to that arrest, including where he was working, the city he was living in, as well as his relationship with his estranged wife. we'll have more details on that in the next half hour. live in alamo, pete surato for "today in the bay." >> fascinating. thanks, pete. we'll constantly update the story online. can you view the gallery with evidence photos from over the years. can you head over to nbcbayarea.com right now.

the bart station back open at 5:04 after a terrifying ordeal last night. police say a man shot at a police officer. happened at the hayward station at 7:30. the officer did not fire back and was able to arrest the suspect. new this morning uc berkeley conservatives getting the green light to sue the school over public speaking. .republican group fueled after they canceled a speaking engagement by ann coulter. it triggered violent protests, the event in 2017. the judge ruled even though the school based its policy on security not bias, conservative groups could legally challenge that, it limited free expression. concord redevelop the former naval weapons station taking place. tonight neighbors will get word on how the long-term plan is coming together.

it's got to be something else because my allergies are going crazy today. here is a live look outside in palo alto. we do start out with some clouds this morning. as you get out there and do for an early morning walk. we'll start to see sun coming out around 11:00. still our temperatures are cool for this time of year reaching into the low 60s and also looking at this storm system that's offshore and watching as it approaches the bay area and how it will affect our weekend weather. more on that in a few minutes. mike still tracking bart delays. >> no update on equipment problems they have been having from overpass maintenance going on the fremont line. that is the one currently experiencing 20-minute delays. anything more than 20 minutes, i'll call it major delays. swing it around here, tesla in the foregrounds, looking at this. springs station. tracking delays, freeways moving smoothly through the area. that is an option.

5:14 on thursday morning. we wake up and walk out the door, a lot of cloud cover even though you can't see it in this shot. let's go to evergreen mid-50s and clouds by 9:00. then nothing but sunshine today. normally we're up to 71 degrees for this time of year. we're going to stay just below that. the weekend will be even cooler. i'll have a look at the complete microclimate forecast. >> the berkeley curve. an easy drive right now. well populated, toward the bay bridge. the bigger issue is on the track now. we again have that delay for fremont line on the bart system.

we'll track that and your alternate. >> just coming up on a quarter past 5:00, the dow ended its losing strength wednesday, the nasdaq continued to sink if a little bit a lot of companies reporting profit including santa clara's intel. facebook opened its books. more about them in a minute. i want to talk about ford. ford is basically going to stop making cars. ford announced in the next four years it will stop making sedans like fusion or taurus and will only keep the mustang as a car. other than that, it's going to make crossovers and suvs and trucks. as for facebook, it opens its books to investors. we can say the cambridge analytica issue really didn't hurt it. despite all of those people who quit facebook, or claim they did, facebook actually added 70 million users in the midst offist biggest scandal yet. youtube is going to make it easier for parents to control

what their kids see. as we reported in the past, there are a surprising number of disturbing videos on youtube kids. parents will prove what videos their kids can watch. this is through the youtube kids apps. the app only is separate. choose the channel, "sesame street" or a handful of videos and the child can't watch anything but those videos. importantly youtube is not going to suggest videos, because that's where the really weird stuff popped up. you like cookie no one sister, you might like real monsters. >> and you'd be watching something with cookie monster and someone would edit something that was highly inappropriate. >> you've still got to be on top of it. >> completely. >> this is only the youtube app -- kids app but a good step forward. >> that's right. i guess i'm a little protective. mother hen was coming out there. 5:16 right now. some pretty frightening surveillance video, a reminder to parents how dangerous pools

can be. take a look at this. police in south carolina say last month two boys at a resort opened the grate at the bottom of the lazy river pool. one boy became trapped by the pool's suction pipe. after nearly eight minutes the pump was turned off. first responders finally got him out but not before serious quick thinking by one rescuer who hopped in. >> i just figured he needed some kind of oxygen at the time, so i just went under water and i started to breathe into his mouth for him until i got extra help. >> can you imagine that, he jumped in to help breathing for him. that underwater resuscitation may have saved his life. authorities only released the video now that the boy was out of the hospital. amazing. people love a good conspiracy theory and assassination of jfk continues to grab imagination. >> a lot of people still have lingering questions about this tragedy.

get ready to head out on this thursday. we're going to see some sunshine eventually. we do start out with clouds, though. as can you see from this shot looking at san francisco and soma, temperatures have been in the mid-50s all around bay area. south bay seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen as we check out our jogging forecast in hayward. it's still going to be cloudy for much of the morning. then by late morning a mix of sun and clouds. then we're all clear at noon. it will take a while before it warms up. i think that's perfect jogging weather as we look at highs reaching into upper 60s in cupertino but 73 in morgan hill, east bay 273 in danville and fremont 68 degrees there. 63 in san mateo while palo alto will be up to 68 degrees. mostly some 50s around san francisco. north bay up to 71 in napa and santa rosa at 66 degrees. as we look at what's happening out there, i showed you this imagery earlier today.

it was showing that swirl of clouds out there in the pacific. this is a very weak area of low pressure. even the clouds have started to dry up in spots. but we are going to watch out for the possibility that it could bring us some clouds starting tomorrow and some spotty light rain for the north bay and around ukiah farther northward there could be scattered showers and again on saturday morning. then during the afternoon it does clear up as you make your weekend plans. and the weekend forecast is coming up at 5:38. let me know what you're doing this weekend. i'm @karihall weather on twitter and facebook. the inland area shows we cool off low 70s for the day, for the weekend mid-60s. it does warm up for the middle of next week. san francisco upper 50s but you can see clouds for tomorrow and sunday. mike, you're checking out what it looks like at warm springs station? >> that's right. we have our crew out there. not a lot of traffic. can you see where you can lock up your bike.

that staircase or escalator heading to the platform for the bart train which is not coming in right now. i'm going to step into the shot, i'm not really there obviously. what's going on, light commute for bart line and lighter for fremont lines. take a look at my chart, i've outlined 20 minute delay at fremont ends at warm springs and takes you to oakland as far as one of the lines. the coliseum station from our shot as well, that has other lines coming through, pleasanton line. those are servicing the area. i saw a train come through and depart over the last few minutes. at least some of the trains are running. just that fremont line currently having a problem because of equipment issues for fremont line presumably somewhere between fremont and milpitas. a look at the roads you can drive, ride, car share, because there are no delays really to speak of for tfor freeways offe to bay bridge. toll plaza, cash lanes as well

solution in the works. 5:24. car break-ins are become a bay areawide problem. now, there could be a solution in the works. many newer cars unlocked by bringing a key fob to the car, you might have one of these. it's useful to have your hands full. now thieves are taking advantage of that technology. here is how they are doing it. they actually do the fake signal, trick the car into thinking the key fob was nearby. now a polish man targeted by this created a keyless protector. it's a small device with the key signals at the driver's command. making new memories. take a look at the family's portrait maybe hanging on the wall or sitting on the table with a great album. many north bay wildfire victims lost those precious pictures. next month a photographer will offer a freeport rat session for

to catch up with family members in the roseville area. we have video showing take car driving away. neighbors told our affiliate the woman driving away was identified as his estranged wife. sources are also telling them they have been separated for decades but still technically married. a neighbor telling our affiliate deangelo would visit periodically and the couple would publicly fight in front of neighbors. as to where he was working former co-worker said he worked as big rig mechanic holding a job for decades. he only recently retired. here is other inform patience we're learning about deangelot he's also a father and grandfather, a navy veteran as well as a graduate in the year 1964 of folsom high. our affiliate spoke by phone with the family who are not commenting at this time. the next hour we're going to hear more on the golden state killer including his brief tenure as a police officer in the city of auburn.

>> looking like a great one. as you start to make plans by thursday, of course your party planner but hopefully you've made plans already. let me show you things around the bay area, what the weather will look like if you plan on going. it won't be the best beach weekend, only up to 59 degrees. you'll be fighting with those clouds trying to get peek of sunshine. for the inland areas, watching out for a chance of rain and north bay with highs reaching into the mid-60s and on sunday more sunshine. but just a little bit warmer. it won't be as warm as last weekend, up to 66 degrees. if you're going to petaluma, butter and egg days parade you'll see chris chmura on the float. there will be a slight chance of rain especially in the morning. but at noon we'll start to see rain chances tapering off and it will be in the low 60s as the sun starts to come out. on sunday you'll be wrapping up your weekend at the pacific coast dream machines happening at half moon bay at the airport. that goes on from 10:00 to 4:00.

sunshine through the afternoon reaching near 70 degrees today. that's perfect. this weekend it does get cooler and we won't get as much sunshine. i'll talk about that. also what to wear coming up in less than five minutes. here is south bay drive times. they are looking great right now. hey, breaking news, i just got the alert from bart, they are now in recover mode. ten-minute delays for fremont line. that's much better news between dublin and warm springs. north bay looks good as well. highway 101, guys. >> this is not great news, but california is leading the country with the most hit-and-run deaths. all new numbers published just overnight. aaa put out the study. the data itself is from 2016. there were 337 deadly hit-and-run crashes in californ california. nationwide more than 2,000. aaa says a trend moving in the wrong direction. one expert says something we do from time to time may be a part

of the problem. >> pedestrians and motorists alike driving while distracted and walking while face buried in their phone makes them less alert to their surroundings. >> you have to pay attention despite california's big hit-and-run number some cities are successfully cutting traffic deaths. san francisco only saw 20 deaths in 2017. we've seen many bay area communities don't zero vision plan to eliminate all traffic deaths in the coming years. >> 5:45, i want to tell you about a lawsuit we've been telling you about. closing arguments today in the lawsuit challenging the vote system. asian americans say the citywide election discriminates. they claim voting by district instead of at large would result in a more diverse city council. we did some digging overnight. the 2010 census shows 45% of santa clara's population is white, the largest group. asian americans are second

you'll probably be wearing that all day as you won't need to shed the layers as it goes along. i'm watching this area of low pressure. you can see the swirl of the clouds in the pacific. this is a fairly weak system but will bring in a slight chance of rain mostly for the north bay. starting tomorrow all clear today, cloud cover increasing tomorrow morning and a couple of showers popping up for the north bay that will also continue into early saturday morning but clearing out for saturday afternoon. the seven-day forecast brings us temperatures in the 60s after today and then a gradual warm-up early next week. mike is saying that bart is in recovery mode. >> that is right. recovery mode. we're looking at the coliseum station, not bart train but coming through heading north. trains are in recovery mode including through the oakland area, not affected really by the earlier delay for the fremont line, now down to 10-minute issue, equipment problem, switching problem reportedly cleared, much better news. the drive on the roadways
