thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. of course we'll check your commute before you head out the door but first what you need to put on. >> it's a jacket day. can you see behind us it's cloudy and we're going to see those clouds for a little while longer but then sunshine later today. let's get out the door as you make your plans. maybe you're going out for a jog around hayward. it's going to be in the low 50s through 6:00. and then we'll see that sunshine breaking out late morning. all of our high temperatures will be a slight built lower today than yesterday. 71 in napa, inland area still reaching into the low 70s. we'll take a look at that weekend forecast coming up. mike is tracking the morning commute. >> that's right, kari. first of all, bart riders you're in recovery mode at most ten-minute delays. if you're boarding warm springs heading to fremont that was the one with issues. over here the roadways are not experiencing surprises.

a little build for tri-valley through sunol. over here the approach to the bay bridge is fine. toll plaza has metering lights on. turned the camera berkeley approach westbound traffic, eastbound reports of a trash somewhere around university, the crossing. we don't see an interruption to traffic flow so that's all right for the area. across san mateo bridge, more traffic volume but no traffic problems heading west with the taillights. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:01 right now. developing this morning, cold case cracked. they have arrested the man known as the golden state killer. he's link to dozens of crimes across the state including 12 right here in the bay area. you probably also heard of him as the east area rapist and the original night stalker. >> here is the latest. investigators arrested 72-year-old joseph james deangelo at his home in citrus heights. a suburb in sacramento.

that's where the crime spree began four decades ago. dna linked him to more than 45 rapes, 12 murders and 120 burglaries across california. "today in the bay" pete suratos live in contra costa county to explain what we're learning about the suspect. pee pe pete, one of the things people are shocked by is he's a former police officer. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. very shocking joseph deangelo once worked as a police officer during all this for a three-year period of time for the city of auburn where he worked as an officer. a picture uncovered, he's the one in the moustache numerator in that picture. according to auburn police, he was fired in 1979 for shoplifting. law enforcement officials said during a press conference

yesterday that it's possible he may have been committing crimes as the golden state killer while he was working as an officer. decades now after he committed these heinous crimes, residents in the city of auburn are feeling a sense of relief knowing he's behind bars. >> we were scared. everybody had to shut up the house and lock the cars at night. yeah. so we're real relieved he was caught. >> i hope they don't go lightly on him. he's created a lot of pain for a lot of people. >> reporter: of course we're getting more details on the life he was living prior to that arrest, including where he was working, the city he was living in, as well as his relationship with his estranged wife. we'll have more details on that in the next half hour. live in alamo, pete surato for "today in the bay." >> this reads like a book. >> so many layers to this one. >> thank you, pete. we'll constantly update the story online. to view a gallery over the years

station years ago. if everything stays on track concord may start converting the property within two careers. people in the south bay could start seeing tiny homes pop up. there are two possible for those sites one near interstate 280 and 680 and 101. another along mabury. near coyote creek. merc says two fulltime staffers would be there at all times, so would maintenance worker, security and part-time volunteers to arrange meals and activities. first tenants will be single males who have jobs and strong work history. they have to have a plan to move out because this is meant to be temporary. a busy san francisco street just got a little safer. happening today leaders celebrate the project's completion. the two-year turk street safety

ford is basically going to stop making cars. ford announced in the next four years it will stop making sedans like fusion and taurus and keep the mustang. other than that it's going to make crossovers and suvs and trucks. as for facebook it opened its books to investors. we can say the cambridge analytica issue did not hurt it. despite people who quit facebook or claimed they did, facebook added 70 million users in the midst of its biggest stanley yet. youtube is going to make it easier for parents to control what their kids see. as we reported in the past a surprising number of frankly disturbing videos on youtube kids. parents will now be able to preapprove what videos their kids can watch. now, this is on the youtube kids app. this is a separate app. can you choose a trusted channel like, for instance, "sesame street" or just choose a hand full of videos and the child

can't watch anything but those videos. >> but you have to get the app. >> for mobiles and tablets and phones. if you're doing it on your computer, you have the whole youtube. it's one way youtube trying to address these problems portfolio incredibly creepy videos. >> they sneak in. they are watching something seemingly innocent and then you over hear something and you're like what is that. >> creators sneak in. >> not a good thing. 6:16. new this morning ut berkeley conservatives reportedly getting green light to sue the school over speaking limits. they sued after school leaders canceled a speaking engagement by ann coulter. that came following violent protests triggered by a milo event in 2016. even though they based it on security and not bias, conservative groups could legally challenge the university

allergies went crazy. as we go through the morning drive in concord, partly cloudy skies through 8:00 and all clear skies. we're going to see temperatures in low- to mid-60s. make sure you grab sunglasses but you head out. as we get a look at high temperatures in the south bay, 73 degrees in morgan hill. the east bay reaching up to 71 in antioch, fremont up to 68 today. still cool temperatures for the coast and palo alto up to 68 degrees. also watching this system offshore, it's a very weak one and barely any clouds associated with it as of now. as it continues to move closer, we will have a slight chance of rain in the north bay. i'll be watching that for tomorrow. it's mostly around ukiah, farther northward for parts of lake and mendocino counties. saturday morning before it clears out for the afternoon. let me go what's in your weekend plans. weekend forecast coming up at 6:38. you may get a shout out or see your eventure checking out this

"today in the bay" pete suratos live at contra costa county sheriff's office in alamo with what we're learning, pete, about that suspected family life. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. it appears the information we're getting on joseph deangelo, also known as golden state killer, he was living somewhat of a normal live in sacramento. able to go to roseville to track down family in the area. what you see in this video, a person driving away in the car. the woman driving away was identified by neighbors as the wife of deangelo. sources saying they have been separated for decades but still technically married. they say deangelo would visit the house periodically and the couple would publicly fight in

top right berryessa bart station. that is constructed right now. they are doing testing there and it's supposed to be open in the next several months. the question is how to extend from berryessa six miles from downtown san jose and santa clara. the valley transportation agency, vta, four new stations, can you see them listed there, alum rock, downtown san jose, diridon and finally santa clara. they are recommending single bore instead of double bore. that's a question brought up. now it's up to bart's board this morning whether or not to accept those recommendations. if they say yes, vta is expected to begin engineering and preconstruction on this new extension in june. >> how important for you to have bart coming into silicon valley? >> very important since i'm working in san francisco. >> how will it change your life? >> it saves me from driving up there.
