"early today" starts right now. >> good to be with you this friday morning. i'm frances rivera. >> and i'm phillip mena. bill cosby has gone from being america's dad to public disgrace. he now faces decades in prison after being found guilty of drugging and sexually violating andrea constand in his home 14 years ago. hers, the only case to result in criminal charges, also the first high profile criminal conviction in the #metoo era. they plotted the verdict saying justice is finally being served. a number of universities are also revoking honorary degrees bestowed upon cosby over the

years. emotion was high inside the courthouse. tears of joy from cosby's accusers and an angry outburst from cosby himself. nbc's stephanie gosk has the details. >> reporter: bill cosby, comedian, actor, the man who once dubbed america's dad, the 80-year-old is convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault. >> what was revealed through this investigation was a man who had spent decades preying on women, that he drugged and sexually assaulted. >> reporter: as the verdict was read, cosby accusers not part of the case gasped and sobbed in the courtroom asking the judge to call for order. the jury decided beyond a reasonable doubt that cosby drugged and sexually assaulted andrea constand in his pennsylvania home in 2004. constand, a former temple university employee, stared ahead during the verdict with lili motion little emotion on her face. a year ago a jury dead locked on the same criminal charges. for many alleged victims whose

accusations never led to cr criminal charges, this was seen as their victory as well. >> can you pinch me? i feel like i'm dreaming. >> the justice system is finally paying attention. >> reporter: in the retrial, five accusers in addition to constand herself, testified telling the jury they, too, were drugged and sexually assaulted by cosby. the prosecution attempting to show a pattern of behavior. the defense fired back in cross-examination, accusing the six women of wanting money and fame. in closing arguments, cosby's attorney kathleen bliss personally attacked one of the women. former model janice dickinson, telling the jury, it sounds like she has slept with every man on the planet. women's rights attorney gloria allred represents several of the accusers who testified. >> finally we can say women are believed and not only on #metoo, but in a court of law. >> reporter: district attorney kevin steele battled to get

cosby's bail revoked and send him straight to jail. telling the judge he was a flight risk and has a plane. cosby then yelled, he doesn't have a plane. you a-hole. i'm sick of it. you a-hole. outside, cosby and his defense team stunned said they would appeal. >> we are very disappointed by the verdict. we don't think mr. cosby is guilty of anything and the fight is not over. >> reporter: bill cosby is back in his pennsylvania home. he's not allowed to leave 9 county. he is going to be undergoing what is called a sexually violent predator assessment. then he has to be back here at this courthouse in two to three months where he faces sentencing, up to 30 years. frances? >> all right, stephanie, thank you. in just hours after cosby's guilty verdict, balance tv said it is pulling reruns of the cosby show effective immediately. cosby made generations of fans laffer as his iconic role as america's dad in the hit sitcom.

>> reporter: his actions have given him a new identity. criminal. 80-year-old bill cosby's name will now be followed with these words. convicted felon. his defense lawyers will appeal, will try to keep him out of prison. but it is hard to imagine this horrific shame can ever be washed from his name. cynthia mcfadden, nbc news, new york. >> the historic meeting between the leaders of north and south korea has begun. this morning north korea's kim jong-un met with south korean president moon jae-in at the border. the two shook hands and spoke briefly before moon invited kim to cross over. the first time a leader from the north has come south since the end of the korean war in 1953. the two now begin talks focusing on denuclearization of the peninsula and that will set the groundwork for a meeting with president trump in the coming weeks. for the latest let's go to nbc's janice mackie frayer in seoul. janice, good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

phillip. this was unimaginable just a few months ago with north korean nuclear and missile threats as well as u.s. war rhetoric. yet today kim jong-un and moon jae-in shaking hands at the demarcation line, and at one point kim providing the ice breaker by inviting moon to cross over to the north korean side to shake hands before the two went off for their summit meeting. denuclearization is on the agenda, but it's unclear and many say unlikely that kim is going to commit to the sort of denuclearization the rest of the world is looking for. what the summit is likely to produce is some sort of joint declaration where the two sides may take steps towards denuclearization. they will agree to meet again and perhaps regularly, and that there will be a reduction in the hostilities. at one point there was an exchange between the two men where kim had assured moon that he wouldn't keep him up at night any longer. phillip? >> many years in the making, this meeting.

janice, thank you. >> now to the ongoing controversy between the president and the porn star, president trump is stepping right into the legal battle surrounding his personal lawyer michael cohen. mr. trump held a no-holds-barred and at times rambling phone interview on live tv. he ultimately admitted cohen represented him in connection with that $130,000 payment made to adult film star stormy daniels, and now those very words uttered by mr. trump are being used against him. nbc's peter alexander has more. >> reporter: federal prosecutesers arguing anything you say on fox and friends can be used against you. after president trump mentioned stormy daniels' name for the first time publicly, acknowledging he's tie today d case through his lawyer. >> how much of your legal work was handled by michael cohen? >> well, as a percentage of my overall legal work a tiny, tiny little fraction. he represents me like with this crazy stormy daniels deal. he represented me. >> how are you feeling today? >> great. >> reporter: cohen who just pleaded the 5th is locked in a

legal battle with the porn star who claims she had a sexual encounter with the president. that the white house denies. president trump previously denied any knowledge of the hush money payment to daniels. >> mr. president, did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? >> no. >> reporter: now this line from the president. >> a tiny, tiny little fraction. >> reporter: cited in a new filing, prosecutors insisting if mr. trump's relationship to cohen was so limited, they should be allowed to expedite their review of those documents seized from cohen in that raid earlier this month. the court pointing a former federal judge to determine what is properly protected by attorney/client privilege. even as the president is distancing himself from cohen. >> from what i understand, they are looking at his businesses and i'm not -- iech've been tol i'm not involved. >> i think the president should appear on fox and friends every morning. that's what i think. i thought it was exceptional for our case and i thought it was disastrous for him. >> reporter: the president willing teeing off on the justice department claiming without evidence corruption

nbc's gadi schwartz has the story from phoenix. >> reporter: 50,000 people on the state capital. the largest teacher walk out so far in a protest movement that is sweeping the country. >> there are a lot of people here who need a better wage. that's the bottom line. >> reporter: in a state where student to teacher ratios and teacher pay are the worst in the nation, educators are calling for a 20% raise, no new tax cuts and nearly a billion dollars in funding for education. >> they can't find a new revenue stream to have a quality education system. >> reporter: in colorado, a similar story. teachers surrounding the capital demanding to be heard. >> we're here to shape our youth and if we don't have the resources to do that, what's going to happen to our students when they grow up? >> reporter: demonstrations inspired by walk outs in west virginia, oklahoma and kentucky. arizona's governor said he'll give teachers a 20% raise but over three years. >> i'm working with legislators, republicans and democrats so we
