it's a historic outcome from a meeting decades in the meeting. bob redell is tracking the reaction across the globe. both sides just met. talk about what this conversation was about. >> reporter: >> overnight the leaders of north and south korea signed a declaration signing this would be a new era of peace and no more war on the korean pen niina peninsula. both sides have agreed to push for talks with the united states and possibly china as well to officially end the war with a peace treaty. last night the demilitarized zone, the area that separates both countries, there was this historic moment. as kim jong-un of morning korea shook hands with president moon jae-in of south korea, both men smiled and changed words and then took turns stepping over to the other man's side. this was the first time a north korea leader has been on the south korean soil since the fighting stopped in 1953.

the joint summit afterwards, the two leaders committed and agreed to the denuclearize the peninsula and make it free of nuclear weapons but released no details on what steps north korea would take. in the past it would only disarm if the united states removed its 28,500 troops from south korea. in an interesting change, kim jong-un told his counterpart in the south he was aware his missile tests were keeping him awake at night. with this new agreement, the north korean leader said i'll make sure you can sleep soundly. reporting live in the newsroom, bob redell, quds today in the bay. >> other developments this morning in the golden state serial killer case, he is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon. we're also getting chilling new acts of decades old attacks made by the suspect. most happened in neighborhoods around sacramento.

a mother and daughter who escaped one attack in 1976 are reliving their they are fiing experience and it started when their attack pried open a window. >> he's got a face ski mask on and t-shirt on and tool belt and boots but not wearing any pants. so i think what is this crazy guy not wearing pants. >> the mother fought off the attacker and ran out the door for help. in this case the suspect left the scene. four decades later new dna technology helped track him down thanks in part to an open source genology website. we'll have more coming up, fascinating. a full report at 5:30. >> 5:03 right now, a devastating story out of san jose, neighbors say a man died a hero after he ran into a burning mobile home. this to save a little girl. however it turns out that girl was safe outside of the home.

the man never made it back outside. this happened yesterday afternoon at the west wind mobile home park near highway 237. people there are actually watched this whole ordeal say it's just devastating. >> that young man died a hero and people should remember him and his family should think so highly of him. >> investigators are looking into how this fire started. they have not released the name of the man who died. in the meantime at 5:04, problems continue in concord this week. air quality said to be so bad people can't go back to their homes. we showed you evacuation on early tuesday morning when the fire started. the crew are demolishing what's left of the building that burned. it was under construction. firefighters still haven't said what even started that fire. calls this morning for a new investigation into the scandal surrounding the hunter's point naval ship yard and ongoing cleanup of toxic soil.

bay area investigative unit helped uncover this story. the navy says a private cleanup company for years may have faked data in its collection of radioactive soil. contra costa county supervisors fear contaminated soil ended up in landfills not designated for radioactive material. they insist everything was done properly and guidelines were followed. a little bit of history is supposed to be made when the san jose police department welcomes its newest class of officers. or maybe instead of history it's her story. according to the mercury news the latest class includes the most women ever. nine of the 47 graduating officers are female. about double the usual number. 5:05 right now. as a "today in the bay" viewer, you know home fires can move fast and be devastating. >> the red cross will be out to make sure people have a chance to get out alive.

kris sanchez joins us with how you can help. good morning, kris. >> reporter: hi there, the red cross of silicon valley will be installing smoke detectors like this for free. they run about $20 and have a ten-year battery so you don't have to replace them in that time and doing this in fire prone areas around the bay area. the red cross estimates that seven people every day die in a house fire. 36 people are injured in a house fire and that there are 64,000 house fires every year all across the united states. the red cross says 416 people got out alive from homes where the red cross is installed smoke detectors in the three years of this campaign. some of those lives saved were in the lands and mobile home park during the north bay firestorm. several people said the only reason they got out because they heard their smoke alarm and these were smoke alarms

installed by the red cross. >> the support for family to already have prethought if my smoke alarm goes off, what am i going to do. how am i going to get out? >> now, this coming weekend through the next two weekends through may 12th. the red cross will ask for volunteers to install smoke detectors and help people come up with an escape plan and document where the smoke detectors are going. the red cross wants to install 2,000 smoke detectors in homes around the bay area and cities from san rafael down into cities in the sleenas valley. they aim to install 100,000 smoke detectors nationwide. in the three years of the sound the alarm campaign, the red cross has installed more than a million smoke detectors. if you have some free time this weekend, next weekend or the weekend after that, the red cross could certainly show you how to be a big help in your community. i posted a link where to sign up with the red cross to help install smoke detectors and help people make sure they know how

temperatures for today. upper 60s for antioch and 63 in santa rosa. morgan hill 69 degrees. mike, are you hearing about a car fire right now? >> i am, a car fire in san jose near this camera. this is 101 northbound. we typically focus on this part of the commute south and then tully, looking into the distance, no flashing lights and certainly don't see any flames but that's where the car fire was reported just around the tully off-ramp from 101. no slowing showing on the sensors either. often times it was 'car overheating and gets clear quickly as they move towards a gas station nearby or what have you. we'll follow that and rest of the bay and easy flow of traffic on the speed sensors and there's palo alto north and smooth drive for 101. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> coming up here on "today in the bay," a unique new way to destress. take a look here.

. good morning, it is 5:13. let's take a live look outside in san jose. it's an all clear start to the morning but we will see clouds in the mix today as we check out our temperature trend for willow glen, mid-50s through 9:00. more people getting up and out and about and we'll see temperatures rising in the upper 60s today. slightly cooler than where we should be but this weekend is going to be a cooler one. then we warm up, more on all of this and where we can see a slight chance. >> an easy drive right here, this is the berkeley curve. we see no slowing, that's good stuff. i've got something in the east bay, i'll check on a crash over in oakland. >> well, your money had a very good day on thursday after strong earnings from facebook.

shares in facebook rose nearly 10% as it became obvious nothing, not even cambridge analytica can keep facebook users away. amazon posted big profits as well, saying it would raise the price of prime by 20%, $119 a year. wells fargo back in the news once again not for good reasons. the wall street journal says the labor department is looking into accusations the bank mismanaged its customer's retirement accounts. ja jd power came out with a big list of banks and wells fargo at the tail end. u.s. bank at the top and followed by chase. our graphic on the side only has room for six items. so union bank is on the bottom but really it's wells fargo, they come in seventh on a list of seven banks we'll get the latest gdp numbers as well shortly, a measure of the effort we as americans make together. president trump wants to see 7%

>> a leap. let's get a look at the forecast with a few clouds. we'll see more clouds throughout the weekend as we will have a disturbance moving by that could bring a little bit of rain to parts of the bay area. it's all dry now as we look outside in oakland and it's a busy friday. already a lot of people out the door and our temperatures start in the low 50s and noon 56 degrees and low 60s for the afternoon and for the evening it will be cooling off and fast and you'll probably be wearing a jacket or long sleeves all day long with the highs today much lower than the way we started this week only in the upper 60s for much of the south bay. 68 degrees in downtown san jose. for livermore, 67 degrees and walnut creek 67 and fremont, 66 degrees. 58 in half moon bay and 57 in daily city. also upper 50s in san francisco, the ma rena district, 56 degrees and 64 today in sonoma. as you check out your

microclimate and seven-day forecast at the bottom of the jea screen, it stays cool and will only make it in the upper 50s today. also been tracking a lot of showers and thunderstorms that fired up over the sierra yesterday and an area of low pressure drawing in some moisture. for the most part we'll see fairly dry conditions but our models showing we'll see an increase in cloud cover today and also a few spotty showers that will be possible especially for north bay and into this afternoon. there may also be a slight chance of rain for the coastal areas but inland i don't think we'll see too much out of this even as we go into tomorrow morning. there could be a few sprinkles but the rest of the day is looking dry unless you're in the north bay. there could be a chance of rain. what are you doing this weekend? i'm @karihall weather. let me know. the weekend forecast is coming up in 20 minutes if you can hang out for that. we will see drying out and some clearing heading into next week.

look at those temperatures, heading back up in the upper 70s, san francisco up 50s and low 60s next week. mike, you're looking for a crash in oakland. >> i am, the same shot you showed a few minutes ago. i wanted to focus on the area over here alongside northbound 880 and 98 or in that area, reports of a crash, i don't see real interruptions to the traffic flow. i'll continue to watch but the speed sensors show the same thing, no delay traveling north past the scene. what also popped up on the chp, cal da cot tunnel towards arinne da, reports of a crash that might be blocking lanes. we'll track that crash but so far over through contra costa county and in towards the bay bridge is moving smoothly. the rest of the south bay and peninsula sensors show no delay either. it's light. it's a friday. nice smooth flow of traffic. in dublin, plenty of traffic

suspect was able to live freely for so long but very relieved that investigators say the east area rapist is finally behind bars. 72-year-old father and former police officer joseph james deangelo was arrested at his sit truss heights home on eight counts of murder. overall investigators believe he's responsible for more than a dozen murders and at least 45 rapes and 100 burglaries throughout california since the 1970s. deangelo's family and neighbors will be closely watching developments in this case. >> i'm not trying to say he's guilty. i'm not trying to say he's innocent. i'm trying to say that let's see how it goes. let's go through the process. >> he once left a death threat for our family on our answering machine message and it said if we didn't shut the dog up he would deliver a load of death. >> investigators say an online

accusers will talk about the verdict coming up live. fit for trial, thags the findings for one dwrgroup of experts from a killer from hawaii who escaped to the bay area. he was arrested in stockton. three days earlier walked out of a honolulu mental hospital and flown to san jose. a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity. a psychiatric panel in hawaii concludes he can be tried on new charges tied to the escape. get ready to see a protest at the university of california campus. workers will start striking sunday may 7th and last three days. the strike will impact all campuses and medical centers as well. workers are taking issue with stalled contract talks what they see as racial and jends erin equality. >> 5:36, the drive between redwood city and san bruno could be faster in a few years. we told you this before, transportation officials want to

for permits to grow legally. since january when the new law kicked in 8% tried to get state licenses, to get a better idea what they are up against we went to the epicenter of cannabis cultivation. this grower says he can't afford to bring his property up to code. it could cost hundreds and thousands of dollars. with california's weed prices plummeting, the investment doesn't pay off. he's still growing pot but doing it on the black market where people can make more money selling to out of state buyers. the hum bomt county fines s $10,000 a day. we brought this to the chief of the new bureau of cannabis control. she says she's worry about the black market and says regulators are tweaking the rules to make it easier to get into the legal market. our full investigation is online right now and you can check it out at nbcbayarea.com/we
