area. we'll see clouds in the mix throughout the weekend. here's a live look outside in san jose as you get ready to step out willow glen will be in the upper 50s and notice the clouds in those little icons there. that's what you'll see overhead with the mix of sun and clouds today, it keeps it cooler with upper 60s for the afternoon. we'll talk about the weekend ahead and mike now you're tracking the caldecott tunnel. >> westbound is moving fine and in fact most of the bay is moving fine because at 6:01 on a friday morning. we tend to see a lighter commute. over here the caldecott approach towards orinda, still affected because one has a couple of lanes closed, an overturned vehicle there. i would suggest you use the one without flashing lights that's the one moving more smoothly. towards the bay bridge, westbound 24, coming out of contra costa county, slowing out

of bay point for highway 4 and the interchange moving smoothly. bay bridge has a babckup, metering lights are on. richmond/san rafael, fast track is a good advantage, let the technology help you out. >> thanks, mike. 6:02. breaking news impacting the entire world, leaders from north and south korea promised no nor war and say they'll get rid of nuclear weapons. bob redell tracking the historic nation and what this could mean for the united states as well, bob? >> reporter: good morning, leaders of north and south korea signed a declaration saying and promising there would be quote a new era of peace and as you mentioned no more war on the korea peninsula. the two koreas are still technically at war even though the shooting stopped in the 1950s with an armistice, both sides are now pushing for talks with the united states and possibly china as well to come

to an official end of the war with a peace treaty. now the two met at the demilitarized zone, the area that separates both countries and what was a historic moment yesterday as kim jong-un of north korea shook hands with president moon jae-in of south korea, both men smiled and exchanged words. then took turns stepping over to the other man's side. this was the first time a korean north korean leader has set foot on south korean soil since the fighting stopped in 1953. at the joint summit afterwards, both men embracing the two leaders committing, agreeing to denuclearize the korean peninsula and make it free of nuclear weapons but they released no details on how that would be accomplished or what steps north korea would take. in the past they have indicated they would only disarm if the united states removed its 28,500 troops from south korea. in an interesting exchange, kim jong-un told his counterpart in the south, he was aware his

missile tests were keeping him awake at night. with the new agreement the north korean leader said quote, i'll make sure you can sleep soundly. reporting live in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> amazing his history made there. developments also in the golden state serial killer case. the suspect joseph deangelo scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon. we're also getting chilling new accounts of decades old attacks made by the suspect. most of the first attacks happened in neighborhoods in sacramento. a mother and daughter who escaped one attack in 1976 are now reliving their terrifying experience. it started when they say their attacker pried open a window. >> he's got a ski mask on and t-shirt on and tool belt and boots but he's not wearing any pants. and so i think what is this crazy guy not wearing any pants.

>> the mother actually fought off their attacker and ran out the door for help. in this case authorities say the suspect left the scene. four decades later, new dna technology helped track him down thanks in part to an open source geneology website. a full report at 6:30. 6:05, a devastating story out of san jose. neighbors say a man died a hero after he ran into a burning mobile home to save a little girl. it turned out that girl was safe outside. the man never made it back outside. this happened yesterday afternoon at the west wind mobile home park near highway 237. police and people who watched the entire ordeal are devastated. >> that young man died a hero. people should remember him and his family should think so highly of him. >> now, investigators are look

being into how this fire started. they have not released the name of the man who died. >> a little bit of history is set to be made today when san jose police department welcomes its newest class of officers. we may call this her story. according to mercury news the latest class includes the department's most women ever, nine of the 47 graduates are female officers. it's about double the usual number there. >> 6:06. calls for a new investigation in the scandal surrounding the hunter point naval ship yard and ongoing cleanup of toxic soil. nbc bay area helped uncover the store rix the navy now says the private cleanup company for years may have faked data in ilts collection of radio active soil. contra county supervisors now fear contaminated soil ended up in landfills not designated to hold radio active material. the company doing the cleanup insists everything was done

properly and guidelines were followed. >> as a "today in the bay" viewer, home buyer fires can be fast and devastating. the red cross is making sure people have a chance to get out alive. kris sanchez is live with how you can actually help. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus, red cross volunteers will be installing smoke alarms and detectors in homes in fire prone areas, this is the kind they used with the ten year battery that doesn't need replacing but they can install all of the smoke deterkts without a little bit of help. i'll tell you how to volunteer to assist. the red cross estimates that seven people die every single day in a house fire and 36 people are injured in house fires and across the nation there are 64,000 house fires every year in the united states. the red cross says 416 people did get out alive from homes where the red cross installed smoke detectors like this one. some of those lives saved here in the bay area at the land's

end mobile home park during the north bay firestorm. the only reason they got out alive is because they heard their smoke alarm and these were smoke alarms installed in homes by the red cross. >> so support for families to already have prethought if my smoke alarm goes offer, where am i going to go and how am i going to get out? >> this coming weekend, volunteers will be working this weekend and next weekend and weekend after to install 2,000 smoke detectors in homes around the bay area from san rafael down to the salinas valley. more than 100,000 nationwide. in the three years of the sound the alarm campaign, the red cross has installed more than a million smoke detectors in homes, if you have free time, they will train you and show you how to do it and there are communities around the bay area so you don't have to drive that far. i posted a link to the volunteer opportunity in my twitter feed and facebook page and if you

get peeks of sunshine. live look in dublin, no issues with visibility, as you make the morning drive we'll see clouds through 8:00 and some peeks of sunshine even into the afternoon. we go from the mid-50s to the mid-60s today. all of our high temperatures will ab a touch cooler compared to yesterday and especially the way we began this week in san jose expect a high of 68 degrees and also 68 in antioch. and oakland 63 degrees and today in napa, 66. now we're tracking the weekend forecast but mike gets you out the door and little bit more slowing showing up on the roads. >> pretty much all i got. a little more slowing and few more cars. we take our time getting out on a friday commute. a lot of times folks don't do the early morning commute and that's what we're seeing around the bay. the crash eastbound lanes towards the caldecott tunnel and towards orinda. one that's open is able to handle everything over there. a little slowing 101 through san

it is 6:14 and we're seeing clouds across parts of the bay area. as we take a live look outside in san jose as we approach sunrise, it will be a cooler day in evergreen, 58 degrees at 10:00. normally we're up to 71 degrees, we won't quite make it there today but at least we will get some sun at times but there will be parts of the bay area that could get some rain this weekend. i'll talk about where you could

arrested. irvin and jonathan pool and marcus collins, the suspect broke into a car yesterday afternoon and stole a purse but the purse was the bait. it had a gps tracker in it. officers say this serves as a warning to other auto burglaries. 6:18. the next generation fleet of san trans buses will be green and not talking about the color. starting in november the agency rolls out the first of the ten electric power buses. today at 10:00 this morning, you can get your first look at them yourself. this will be at the base in san carlos. >> the newest avengers movie dominating the box office and only been out a few hours. according to deadline hollywood the film made $45 million just last night. it is a 19th marvel movie and almost every single super hero is in this one. the avengers will finally meet the guardians of the galaxy. >> i don't know, i hope --

outside at the golden gate bridge, looking at the layer of clouds we have out there, the clu clouds will lift to 3,000 feet and we'll see peeks of sunshine throughout the day. the forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and it shows that we will have a nice cool weekend, even cool this morning as you step out for a morning jog and walnut creek, a mix of sun and clouds, not much of a change and our temperatures throughout the morning. any time you go, it's going to be cool but it will be warming up towards the afternoon. then as we get the kids ready for school, we'll be at 51 at 7:00 and mid 60s as you pick them up at school. good day at the park with great weather but watch out for the allergens flying through the air. we have a high amount of oak and pine tree poll enand grass pollen still high. as we look at our high temperatures for today, upper 60s, compare that to the mid-80s we just had on monday. big cooling trends under way

with partly to mostly cloudy skies and before the peninsula we're going to reach into the upper 60s and watching for a slight chance of rain as we see the cloud cover increasing. a lot of storms fired up yesterday but today we're going to see a few spotty light sprinkles but not enough to cancel any outdoor plans and in fact the highest chance of rain will be in the north bay and during the overnight hours and for tomorrow afternoon, once again some light sprinkles for the morning but today looks pretty good. mike, you're still tracking that crash out of the caldecott tunnel. >> a little over an hour but it's counter commute and even the commute is so light this friday being what it is, it's friday, 6:21, we have more food drive, south bay, peninsula and tri valley and east bay. the tunnel crash does affect one of the eastbound boards, that thumb's up, at one point it was completely closed. you'll see which is clearer and

spotty light rain, mostly across the north bay and coastal areas but rest of the bay area will stay mostly dry. inland temperatures will reach in the mid to upper 60s and drying out and clearing out as we go into the next few weeks. and -- next few days i should say. as we get a look at our san francisco forecast, upper 50s for the weekend and low 60s early next week. i'll talk all about the weekend coming up in about seven minutes. mike you were saying the traffic alert has been canceled. >> it's a traffic alert we've been following at the caldecott tunnel. it hasn't affected traffic flow because eastbound 24 is light. as you look at the map, pretty much all of the kmuts are light starting to build up a tad bit westbound. all activity cleared from the caldecott and then it was when we saw slowing. that's the reason why, the crash cleared to the shoulder. there's the walnut creek interchange and concord and bay

started, joseph deangelo is accused of terrorizing neighborhoods in the 70s and 80s. >> investigators combed through his sacramento area lohome lookg for new evidence. sharon is live with the new revelations in the case. this is just found out new information. >> reporter: exactly, laura and marcus. i just spoke with a sheriff's deputy here, although he did not help out with cases way back then, he knows there were so many victims in this area and this case is definitely on their minds this morning. the victim's family says they are relieved that investigators say that the east area rapist is finally behind bars. 72-year-old father and former police officer joseph james deangelo was artsed at his citrus heights home tuesday on eight counts of murder. overall investigators say they believe he's responsible for more than a dozen murders and at

least 45 rapes and 100 burglaries throughout california since the 1970s. deangelo's family and neighbors will be closely watching developments in this case. >> i'm not trying to say he's guilty, not trying to say he's innocent. i'm trying to say that let's see how it goes. let's go through the process -- >> he once left a death threat on our answering machine message and said if we didn't shut the dog up he would deliver a load of death. >> reporter: investigators say an online genology site helped find the dna from the past crimes, deangelo's home yesterday, investigators sfrped the backyard and took away evidence. some boxes labeled rifles. deangelo will be in a sacramento courtroom later today. reporting live ini rting live l

the bay." >> thanks so much, sharon. new this morning, nbc news veteran tom brokaw denies sex harass mts allegations and matt lauer is push back on new allegations former nb correspondent linda vestor tells variety brokaw groped and assaulted her in the 1990s and she says he showed up uninvited to her hotel room and then she says he did this. >> he took the same hand and reached behind my head and tried to force me to kiss him. >> i pulled back with all of the strength i could muster and stood up. and i said, tom, i do not want to do this with you. >> vester says brokaw did something similar a year later. brokaw admits he did meet with her twice but insists the meetings were professional and she requested them.

vester wanted career advice and nothing inappropriate happened. she said she never reported it because she feared brokaw could end her career. she has hired a lawyer to investigate the culture at nbc. internal review is under way at nbc, "washington post" reports 12 current or former nbc staffers say they were harassed but did not report it. that includes new allegations against matt lauer which he denies former "today" show host ann curry talked to the post and told nbc management about a lauer accusation in 2012. nbc says there's no record of curry's report but clarifies those managers do not work for nbc anymore. continuing coverage, will bill cosby actually go to jail? that's a question many are asking this morning. the comedian icon not in prison this morning despite being convicted thursday on sexual assault charges, he's out on bail and faces up to ten years and $25,000 fine on three

different counts. the judge says that because cosby is 80, i'm not going to simply lock him up. bill cosby's other alleged victims are celebrating the retrial verdict including patricia stewer who used to live here in the bay area. >> i was stunned and sad about carrying the weight of this for so many years. and happy. >> nearly 60 women have accused cosby of assault over several decades, his attorneys say they will appeal and maintain he did not do anything wrong. and coming up at 7:00 on the "today" show, a look for what's next for cosby as he awaits sentencing and two accusers will talk about the verdict live. your drive between redwood city and san bruno could be faster in a few years, we told you before, transportation officials want to add express lanes on highway 101. we'll show you the map now. the lanes will run in both

>> yeah, it's going to be a cooler monday and we've all got big plans for the weekend. but there will be more clouds moving in and also spots where we may see some rain. our highest chance of rain will be in the north bay tomorrow and if you're going out around the bay area, it's going to be in the mid-60s but coast will be cool. only in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees with some breezy winds both saturday and sunday. petaluma, butter and egg days happening tomorrow. the parade starts at noon. there will be a slight chance of a shower. we'll see the sun peeking out behind the clouds and temperatures holding steady in the low 60s, you'll be able to see chris chmura on the nbc bay area float. you might want to check that out. also the king's day windmill festival happening at golden gate park where those dutch wind mills are and it's going to be cool, only in the upper 50s with partly to mostly cloudy skies, if you're going to that, wear something nice and warm and then on sunday, you may be able to

yesterday continues to reverbrate, yesterday mr. trump called into his favorite show and said for first time ever that his lawyer michael cohen represented him in talks with the adult actress stormy daniels and he said he knew about it at the time which was a huge reversal. he also said this about cohen. >> well, he has a percentage of my overall legal work, a tiny, tiny little fraction, but michael would represent me and represent me on some things, he represents me like with this new crazy stormy daniels deal and represented me -- >> that tiny, tiny little part may be a big legal problem. this may have been the worst thing to say because trump's other lawyers have been trying to convince the court that cohen's papers seized by the fbi are protected by attorney-client privilege. if you say your lawyer barely represented you at all, that weakens that argument. we'll continue to examine the president's tweets and executive

bay. as we look at the time line, a lot of the rain comes through the overnight hours, mostly lake and medocino counties but a few light sprinkles for tomorrow morning and of course i'll keep an eye on that. let's see why mike thinks the nimitz is slowing. >> really the reason we saw slowing from the oakland camera, i think it's because of the crash, we'll talk about that, south bay we show a smoother drive, a little build continuing to grow out of san jose and in towards the rest of silicon valley. the crash in oakland is southbound at 23rd. you see no slowing there but that's enough distraction to cue the northbound commute to be a little slow as they clear the lane and they have you have the backup and more slowing through berkeley another maybe there highway 4 approaching the new area. a quick look at the waze system, this one whose name is heli jumper, you may use a helicopter across the slowing.

golden state killer case will face a judge for first time today. joseph deangelo will be arraigned this afternoon in sacramento. he was argsed earlier this week at his home in citrus heights outside sacramento. they used dna technology to track him down thanks to a genealogist website. >> neighbors say a man died a hero after he ran into a burning mobile home to save a little girl. it turns out that little girl was found safe outside of the home. the man never made it out. this happened yesterday afternoon at the west winds mobile home park near highway 237. investigators are looking into how this fire started and they have not yet released the name of the man who died. >> 6:57, a little his supposed to be made when the san jose welcomes its newest class of officers, maybe call it her story. according to the mercury news the latest class includes the highest ever number of women. nine of the 4 7 graduating
