but first, a developing story. the founder of one of the most popular outdoor festivals has passed away. burning man fans in mourning tonight. the news starts right now. good afternoon, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm vicki knew win. we're on early due to the sharks playoff game. it is one of the most popular and iconic festivals in the arts and music community. tonight a sad announcement. larry harvey, the founder of burning man, has died. >> nbc bay area's sergio quintana live in san francisco. the news is devastating to a lot of people here in the bay area. >> reporter: there are quite a few people who are just learning the news of his passing. we understand that larry harvey passed away this morning in his san francisco home. according to the burning man organization, he was surrounded by friends and family. >> we come from a boehehemian

milieu, full of artists and lived to manifest those gifts and give them away. >> reporter: this is video of larry harvey shot back in 2014, speaking about reasons why burning man started in the first place. the first burn was here in san francisco at baker beach in 1989. but after it was shut down by authorities in 1990, they decided to move the festival of arts, camaraderie, and creation out to the nevada desert. today the elaborate week-long event is held in black rock city, nevada. it's a temporary city that draws people from around the world. larry harvey suffered a massive stroke in his san francisco home earlier this month on april 4th. his friends and family were hoping he would recover. unfortunately he did not. he passed away just before 8:30 this morning. now, harvey described himself as a humanist and didn't believe in any kind of an afterlife. at this point, there is no word of any kind of memorial services

that are arranged so far. reporting live in san francisco, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, sergio. we posted the news of larry harvey's death on twitter right after it was announced. follow us at nbc bay area to get alerts on developing stories. new details about that frightening scene on the bay bridge where a chp was dragged by a car after a traffic stop. police have released this mug shot. 33-year-old nicole wade from pittsburgh is facing several charges including attempted murder. sky ranger was over the scene during yesterday's commute. police say officer kyle spears pulled wade over. she then showed him a fake i.d. wade walked back to the car and spears followed. she then took off. the officer grabbed the steering whi wheel trying to stop her. a follow-up now to a violent scene at a south bay middle school carnival. workers broke down the carnival

today after several teens attacked police. cell phone video shows the chaos outside britton middle school in morgan hill yesterday. police say it all began with a report of a teen armed with a knife. take a look here. that teen was arrested, but that is when things escalated. at one point more than 200 people were shouting and threatening officers. several officers were assaulted including one who was punched in the face. many parents say they received frightening calls from their children. >> i get on the phone with my daughter. she's like, yeah, i'm here. they're not letting us out. she's like i'm stuck in a crowd, and they're kind of pushing a certain way. and i'm like, where is your sister at? where's your friend at? >> police from gilroy, san jose, and the chp responded. they arrested eighteens, many of them putting up gang signs. the carnival, which was supposed to be a big fund-raiser is now shut down. a first of its kind summit held today in san jose, looking for the solutions to the rise in gun violence across the country.

kristi smith joins us from the santa clara county fairgrounds. christie? >> terry, this was an all-day summit that just wrapped up about firearms and safety. the idea was to spark conversation, dialogue, and ideas. and in some cases, bring together people who might not ordinarily agree. the discussions were opened with organizers offering pointers on how to hold a fair and balanced discussion. >> guns are so prevalent and so easily obtained that they've created the bad social conditions. >> reporter: ann joined dozens of others today at the santa clara county summit on firearms and safety as people gathered to find common ground. >> i'm a strong supporter of the second amendment. will bailey says he thinks the root causes to all types of violence need to be explored. >> i don't believe continually adding more laws and placing the

burden on law-abiding citizens, you know, is going to solve these issues. >> in the wake of the parkland shooting, we decided here in santa clara county that we needed to tap into the better parts of our community. >> reporter: soup viupervise or helped organize the event. >> the communication has been so broken and the issue around firearms violence has been so polarized. people aren't even talking about just basic commonalities. >> reporter: he says diverse viewpoints were welcome. a few high school seniors came too. nationwide, student voices have grown louder with school walkouts and activism. >> our group was talking about how us students should have a summit like this, all different schools or even just our school. >> reporter: now, the information that was gathered today, we're told, will be put

into a report that will be made public and also shared with the supervisors. we're told that it does have the potential to influence policy. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, nbc bay area news. a developing story we're following in the east bay now. the coast guard has called in helicopters to search for a missing boater in antioch. the missing man was in a fishing boat with a friend in the delta when the boat hit a wake. both men were thrown in the water. it happened about 9:00 this morning. one man was rescued by a nearby boat but the other still hasn't been found. the coast guard says the currents are strong in the delta right now, and there were a lot of boaters in the area due to a bass fishing tournament that's taking place there. it's unclear if the missing man was taking part in that tournament. well, a cool and breezy day across the bay area and according to the script i have in front of me, it says a chance of showers in the forecast. now, rob mayeda joining us now. is this from a week ago or something? >> no. it's that carryover weekend trend where you keep having rain showers at times.

right now if you look closely on the san francisco camera lens, yes, there is a chance of some brief passing light showers. a few earlier. in san francisco, breezy and cool. wind speed at 15 miles per hour. emeryville, the wind across the water there. temperatures in the low 60s with winds of about 15 to 20 miles per hour. in san jose, a few breaks of sunshine now. 66 degrees. nothing like the 80s we saw earlier this week. lots of clouds out there. you can see to the north we do have some rain. that's where the focus of the rain chances will likely be for tonight. but our futurecast, if you look closely, even around the south bay as we head towards tomorrow morning, a slight chance of seeing a few of those isolated spring showers. that's the way the day will begin. we're give you an hour by hour outlook coming up in about ten minutes. >> remember, you can track the forecast with our nbc bay area app. it is free to download. you can get updates on the weather conditions where you live. >> we might need the pollen count too. sharks fans are not giving

up hope. the team's stanley cup playoff run continues in about 20 minutes on nbc bay area. >> the sharks are looking for redemption after a 7-0 in game one. marianne favro in downtown san jose. sharks fans are out in force and they believe. >> reporter: oh, they do believe. they say that they are definitely going to win tonight. this is certainly a fun assignment. the sharks are expecting more than a thousand fans to show up here tonight, and here you can see we've got a lot of people who came early to get a good seat in front of one of these two big screens. they say they want to watch the game with fellow sharks fans. there are three locations to watch here at san pedro square. two outside and one inside. fans get to take home a souvenir towel, and sharky will be here along with sharks alumni including mark smith and devin set gucci. fans we talked with said they were enjoying the fact that the viewing party this time falls on a weekend. >> i mean we couldn't miss the

capital expressway. firefighters say the car crashed into a tree and flipped over. the female driver was trapped inside. first responders say she was unconscious when they arrived. they got her out of the mangled car and took her to a trauma center. the cause of that crash is being investigated right now. an alert citizen leads to the capture of an escaped inmate in sonoma county. this happened at the north county detention facility in santa rosa. the sheriff's office says the inmate scaled a tall fence with razor-sharp wire. he then started running towards sky lane boulevard, and that is when someone spotted him running through a field. deputies captured him wet and bleeding, lying in a creek just 30 minutes after he had escaped. get this, the sheriff's department says, quote, unbelievably, he was only serving a two to four-day sentence. >> doesn't seem worth it there. as the saying goes, there is no use crying over spilled milk. but in this case, it could be worth getting upset. a lot of milk wasted after a truck carrying 5,500 gallons of milk crashed near sears point.

it happened just after 5:00 this morning. police say the truck overturned as it was making its way on to highway 37. the milk came pouring out at about four gallons a minute. the driver suffered minor injuries. still ahead on nbc bay area news, another no-show for the president. mr. trump skipping the annual white house correspondents' dinner. what he's doing instead. plus a new mission for nasa. why it will be a historic moment for us here on the west coast.

president trump will not be in washington for tonight )s annual white house correspondents dinner. the president is hitting the president trump will not be in washington for tonight's annual white house correspondents' dinner. the president instead is hitting the road for a campaign-style rally in michigan. mr. trump tweeted today that a time and place is being set for his upcoming meeting with kim jong-un as president trump seeks a deal to end north korea's nuclear program. experts say he appears poised to back out of a similar deal with iran. allies are pressuring the president to stay in that iran deal. >> if president trump pulls out of the iran nuclear deal, it may convince kim jong-un that the united states is untrustworthy. >> the white house says the location for the summit with kim jong-un has been narrowed down to two countries, but officials are not saying which ones they are. a one-way ticket from california to mars. nasa is releasing details tonight about a historic mission. the space agency says all systems are go for the launch of a new spaceship to mars from vanden berg air force base on

the central coast. the launch is scheduled for may 5th. the spaceship, called the insight probe, will dig deep below the surface of the red planet, reaching depths as low as 16 feet. nasa says the probe will also track earthquakes on mars. this is nasa's first interplanetary mission to launch from the west coast. still ahead on nbc bay area news, extra foot traffic today on the golden gate bridge. >> but these are not your average tourists. why girl scouts took over the san francisco landmark. and some cloudy skies then and now in san francisco, of 3 degrees as we watch the second half of a double-header with the giants and dodgers. we'll see cloudy skies, temperatures cooling and maybe a chance of a few sprinkles. what you can expect and how it might impact your sunday when we come back.

>> hi. >> thousands of girl scouts walked across the bridge as part of a bridging ceremony. that means the scouts are graduating from juniors to cadets. here's the scene from our camera on the bridge. organizers say girl scouts from all across the state came to walk across the golden gate bridge and the day wrapped up with a celebration at krissy field. no girl scout cookies but plenty of other treats. this is the butter and eggs parade in petaluma. this year's celebration is a milestone. the grand marshal, former giants pitcher and current junior giants commissioner, now wa lowrie. i remember him. it's the 100th anniversary of national egg day. the first parade was held in petaluma back in 1918. the city was recognized nationally for being home to 6 million hens laying 600 million eggs. >> wow. >> nbc bay area is a proud sponsor of the butter and eggs day parade. this year's theme, a parade is hatched. >> when you have that many eggs coming out of that region, that is worthy of a parade. rob is here now with a look at

what we can expect for the rest of our weekend. >> you wouldn't want 90 degree temperatures on butter and egg day. >> it was pretty good. 60s. we're also watching a chance of seeing a few spring showers for you this weekend. let's take you over to san jose. numbers in the mid-60s. a lot cooler than earlier this week. you see the winds up there at close to 20-mile-per-hour gusts out of the northwest at 14 miles per hour. over towards the east bay, dublin currently seeing temperatures in the low 60s. a blustery evening. and a few sunny breaks between the clouds. in san francisco right now, 63 degrees. wind speeds at 15. so here is the satellite and radar view. notice the clouds. at times, there's just enough moisture out there to wring out a few drops of rain. again the main focus of a lot of the rain today has been up on the north coast over towards the sierra. this mainly cooling us down, keeping things breezy, but we'll leave in the chance of some isolated sprinkles into tomorrow morning and like lly into the afternoon. tomorrow, mid-60s around the

south bay. santa clara heading up to the tri-valley. lower 60s from oakland into hayward. 50s from half monday bay to daly city. north bay temperatures in the upper 60s. hour by hour, tomorrow morning south bay hill tops might see a few sprinkles, even during the day tomorrow, a lot like we had today. passing clouds at times. a few sbrabreaks of sunshine. rain expectations, maybe just enough to briefly dampen the ground and then the sun comes out and then the roadways dry out again. a few isolated showers for the weekend. second half of the week looks yi windy in the seven-day forecast as high pressure builds tuesday into wednesday, prepared for some gusty winds. by next weekend, looks like that high builds in. that's the reason why the seven-day forecast has the temperatures climbing up for the second half of next week. so san francisco kind of a cool and breezy finish to the

a story that will make you bay area proud. >> reporter: abel says looking back he realizes his love of chess stems from a desire to be in sole control of the outcome. in retrospect, it makes sense that at a time in his life when he didn't feel completely in control, chess was the answer. >> so you have this knight pinned. you have this knight pinned. >> reporter: freeing yourself from a trap. it's one of the skills abel teaches his students how tow do on a chess board. it is also something he's shown a knack for in life as well. you see, before running bay area chess, an enrichment program teaching more than 2,000 students at more than 100 bay area schools, abel worked for close to 20 years in a job in the medical field that paid the bills but didn't feed his soul. >> i didn't feel like what i did made a difference. >> reporter: and when that got

to be too much and it came time to make a change going forward, abel went back to his childhood and a gift he once received. >> it was one of my aunts got me a chess set for christmas. >> reporter: abel took to the game so well that while a student at san jose's lincoln high school, he was one of the best chess players anywhere. >> i was ranked 16th in the country in my age group. >> reporter: but remaining at that level requires almost complete dedication to the game. and soon work, school, and eventually a family meant abel couldn't. but he didn't just play less chess. he stopped. >> nothing. nothing. yeah. did i ever play with friends on the side or do anything like that? nothing. it was -- it was completely dormant. >> reporter: abel only returned to the game when he knew his life had to change. >> one of the things that i've kind of like found during the course of my life is that

there's always some things that remain constant. >> reporter: abel couldn't be happier with his decision, and the students he works with seem pretty thrilled too. abel knows that his days of playing elite chess are long behind him, and chances are slim any of his current students will one day become grand masters. but neither of those are the point of all this. teaching students to avoid traps on the board and in life is. >> if these kids learn these things at this early age and then go off and have this effect on others in their community and set this good example, it's good for the community, and it's good for the world. >> reporter: abel says the ability to lose and still be a good sport about it is one of the great skills that these kids take away from bay area chess. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> nice job, garvin. we'll be right back.
