good to be with you. i'm frances rivera. hundreds of migrants who made their way to the united states over the past month in a cara van faced disappoint when they finally reached the border in tijuana, mexico. u.s. immigration officials informed them the port of entry was already at capacity and their asylum claims would have to wait. the migrants had already drawn the wrath of president trump who described the group as a threat. attorney general jeff sessions has called the caravan a, quote, deliberate attempt to undermine our laws and overwhelm our system. the migrants gathered at the wall, some climbing the border to get a glimpse of their supporters in the united states. only about 100 feet way in san diego's friendship park. nbc's gadi schwartz tells us more from tijuana, mexico. >> reporter: 9-year-old angel wearing a red, white and blue beanie sees this as he watches the crowd. signs that say, he, his family and hundreds of others are welcome in the united states. >> they're our brothers and sisters. there shouldn't be a wall

between us. >> reporter: but those people are free on the other side of the fence say from the dangers of everyday life in much of central america. kathryn and her 1-year-old daughter ashley now sick with a fever are waiting to turn themselves in at the port of entry. she said gangs in honduras threaten today kidnap her baby and she can't go back. she said today is still the plan they are going to try to come in today. president trump talked again at the rally in michigan. >> are you watching the mess that's going on right now with the caravan coming up? are you watching this? and our laws are so weak, they're so pathetic. >> reporter: i.c.e. and border patrol officials tell us they will respect all legitimate pleas for asylum under the law but may prosecute american lawyers and volunteers if found to have coached immigrants what to say. >> there is nothing wrong with preparing for a legal proceeding. we prepare our clients for court. that is what we're doing here. >> reporter: what started with more than a thousand is down to

just about 100. all of them hoping to find refuge on the other side of the bridge. and even though for now in caravan has been turned away, organizers say they are going to try again and again. they say they're right to request asylum has to be respected. frances, back to you. >> gadi, thanks for the report. now to the fight for congress, the midterm election may be six months from now. you would think it's around the koerner especially with the way president trump was campaigning this weekend. he barn stormed michigan in a bid to fire up his base and galvanize support for republicans ahead of this year's election. democrats are hoping for a wave of victories while republicans hope to hold the line in a race that could be critical in deciding if trump even makes it to a second term. and democrats are already calling for impeachment proceedings should they take congress. nbc's kelly o'donnell has more on the battle being waged. >> reporter: president trump road testing campaign themes for the republican party. >> nancy pelosi and her gang,

getting stronger. every single day -- >> reporter: big unknowns from the world stage could cast a shadow over november. the president is already taking credit for progress on nuclear talks with north korea. >> what do you think president trump had to do with it? i'll tell you what. like how about everything? >> reporter: beyond his rally bravado, foreign policy democrats offered a more restrained assessment. >> a summit isn't a strategy. but having an upcoming summit with an opening where the supreme leader of north korea has already made a number of not encourages offers, i think is a terrific opportunity. >> reporter: the president faces a separate and important deadline in two weeks. to determine if the u.s. will remain part of a nuclear agreement with iran. that's the one he's been criticizing since the campaign. the one democrats and european allies want to see remain intact. the white house says parts of it should be renegotiated. there doesn't seem much appetite

for that. and so far the white house is saying the president is likely to withdraw, but no final decision has been made. frances? >> all right, kelly, thank you. south korea says kim jong-un has agreed to complete denuclearization of its country under one condition. if the united states pledges not to invade. president trump is taking full credit. ahead of his upcoming summit meeting with the north korean leader, he touted that north korea will shutdown its nuclear test site in may. during a rally in michigan saturday the president said potential talks with kim could happen in the next three or four weeks. but skepticism still remains over whether kim would actually follow through on his promises. in toronto, thousands of mourners turned out for a vigil held sunday evening for the victims of the deadly vana tack. justin trudeau attended along with other politicians. a driver of a rental van mounted the sidewalk of canada's longest road plowing down pedestrians in the worst mass killing in three

decades. speakers used sunday's event to thank emergency workers for responding to the incident and for their selflessness. and at the vigil organizers lit candles for the ten lives taken. >> we will pour our love and our prayers nfor healing for these families upon these candles tonight. >> police arrested the suspected driver alec minassian after a short standoff. he faces ten counts of first degree murder. the reviews are in for the 2008 white house correspondents' dinner. lawmakers and administration officials rubbed elbows. the comedian on tap to roast d.c., the daily show's michelle wolf is now getting blasted herself. members on both the right and the left are calling her routine distasteful and offensive. white house correspondents association which hosts the event even put out a statement distancing itself from the

comedian saying overnight, that saturday's program was, quote, meant to offer a unifying message and that michelle wolf's routine was not in the spirit of that mission. wolf went after the president and his cabinet. she went after democrats. and she also went after the media. but she played particular attention to the women within the trump administration. and here's some of what she said when it came to white house press secretary sarah sanders. >> we are graced with sarah's presence tonight. i have to say, i'm a little star struck. i love you as aunt lydia in the hand maid's tale. i like sarah, i think she's resourceful. she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. like maybe she's born with it, maybe it's lies. >> oh, boy, really awkward, right? and here she was taking on ivanka trump's role in the administration. >> there's also, of course, ivanka. she was supposed to be an advocate for women, but it turns
