moving along. just seconds right now before 5:00 as we keep continuing on this train of the workweek. >> there we go. we're just moving along there. good morning to you, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. well, you know, today is going to be a nice day. kari has been telling us about it since 4:30 this morning. i want to hear it again. >> okay. it's going to be in the 70s again, and some sunshine today but it is a chilly start as you get ready to head out the door so i want to make sure you're ready. let's take a live look outside at oakland and oracle arena. i want to show you the warriors forecast. at 7:30 we'll be at 59 degrees and some sunshine, all clear dropping back into the upper 50s. our highs are in the 70s and we'll talk about the warmup the rest of the week. mike, you're looking for improvement in the tri-valley. >> that kind of sets the tone but it wasn't just the volume of

traffic, it was a crash that was causing a big backup. we just now see what we were hoping for, a little improvement here. let's look at your maps, the slower drive is from where the camera is all the way over toward hopyard. it's orange now. it was red. it was bad. they cleared the crash from the lanes, that's good news, making very good work of that crash. over to the peninsula there was a deer hit northbound 280 at 92, so there's two middle lanes currently blocked by this activity here. chp will likely run a quick traffic break if they have to clear any hazards from the roadway. as you're approaching 92 getting over toward 101 or heading toward the half moon bay area. we don't see a lot of slowing on the sensors because traffic is relatively light right now. looking at walnut creek, no delay there. at 5:01, a breaking story we've been following overnight.

you want to watch this, it is just tragic. it is a building collapsing in brazil. there are questions how many people possibly could have been inside. a local paper is reporting at least one death so far. there are reports the building used to be police headquarters, but it was abandoned years ago. squatters typically stay there. they' we're working with our foreign desk to get you the very latest. questions for the president. "the new york times" publishing a list of 44 questions special counsel robert mueller supposedly wants to ask mr. trump. topics include potential ties to russia, james comey's firing and the investigation that followed. at about 3:45 in the morning, president trump reacted to the report tweeting so disgraceful that the questions concerning the russian witch hunt were leaked to the media. no questions on collusion. oh, i see, you've made up phony crime, collusion, that never existed. an investigation begun with

illegally leaked classified information. nice. and that's not the only headline coming from the white house today. four sources exclusively tell nbc news they saw chief of staff john kelly call president trump, quote, an idiot. there's an author who writes about chiefs of staff. >> that's a real problem if the chief of staff is criticizing the president out loud. >> in a statement, john kelly calls the story, quote, total bs, adding his relationship with mr. trump is strong. this morning we continue to monitor the latest developments at the mexican border. right now dozens of migrants seeking asylum are still awaiting entry into the u.s. the u.s. allowed eight women and children into the united states. this is all happening at the checkpoint near san diego. a month ago more than a thousand near guatemala began their 2,000-mile journey to the border. many dropped out along the way.

they say they're trying to escape the violence in central america. president trump delayed their entry claiming they pose a threat to the united states. here's vice president mike pence after he met with customs and border patrol agents. >> the 150 men, women and many small children that are being processed at our border not far from here will be completely reviewed by our customs officials under our asylum laws. >> the vice president also inspected the construction work under way at the border wall. and if you're running low on your smartphone data for the month, san jose has you covered. today the city council could approve a plan to speed up public wi-fi. it's a $5 million deal with at&t to install small cell technology on light poles. 95,000 people will get access to the high-speed internet, but experts remind us don't ever do anything private using public wi-fi. it would really be easy for

hackers to access your sensitive information. already may 1st but take a look at this. new individuvideo from donner's showing traffic at a complete stand still. caltrans shut down i-80 because of extremely hard hail. there were multiple spinouts and crashes. i-80 back open now this morning after that cleared. we're still seeing thunderstorms that may fire up today around the sierra. we'll keep nice and quiet weather here as we take a live look outside in san jose this morning. it's going to be a chilly start. santa teresa will be in the low 50s through about 9:00. and at noon, 63 degrees. it will be a great day to get outside, spend some extra time out there with the comfortable weather. a little warmer in martinez with upper 50s at 9:00, but then look at this. by 3:00 today we're at 74 degrees and some breezy winds to go along with it. as we get a look at our highs for the south bay into the south

county, much warmer than yesterday. a few degrees warmer than yesterday afternoon reaching the low 70s. even some upper 70s for spots like concord and walnut creek. we'll be up to 74 there. hayward 69 degrees and a breezy and cool 59 in half moon bay. palo alto will be up to 72 degrees. i'll have a look at more of the forecast coming up. mike says the drive looks pretty good right now. >> yeah. i know you have temperatures in the 70s. i know the speed limit is 65 but i'm going to get you'll see some 70s on your speedometer as well. just be careful out there, folks. the road crews are clearing around the bay. just leave on time and take your time. 280 northbound, this is one of the issues you'll have. a deer was hit earlier. as you approach the split, the connection to 92, so just be careful out there. there may be a quick traffic break but i haven't gotten any more details from chp. it's still slow from el charo

over to hopyard and more slowing hitting the dublin interchange with northbound 680. there's a lot of congestion as they cleared a crash. as we look at the rest of the area, walnut creek, concord, highway 4 looking great all the way from antioch over toward the maze where there are no real problems. a live look to show you how they are over the richmond bridge. westbound 80 shows no backup and that's great but we'll track that and you'll see a backup in about 15 minutes. in problems for the bay shore freeway. back to you. 5:07 for you. today thousands across the country will come together for the annual may day marches. this is video of things happening new york city right now. the rally cry will bow sae sanc for all.

bob redell is live where the protest will happen today. >> reporter: good morning. yes, may day is typically a demonstration for labor rights but over time it's a fight for people who are generally struggling to make ends meet. that's why later this afternoon here in concord at the meadow homes park there's about 300 people expected to rally and protest for better housing for people who are mid to low income and who are immigrants. the raise the roof coalition which is organizing the protest is trying to get the city of concord to better protect tenants from rising rents. then in oakland you have thousands of people, they're expecting a rally to protest increased attacks on the immigrant community by the trump administration and local law enforcement who collaborate with i.c.e. there will be a rally at 3:00, a march at 4:00 to the alameda

user data. when mark zuckerberg takes the stage for his keynote conference at 10:00 this morning, no doubt a lot of the developers in the audience will be thinking about this. just three weeks ago mark zuckerberg was in a suit and tie testifying before congress about privacy and data. cambridge analytica is accused of using facebook data from some 87 million profiles without the users' knowledge to influence the 2016 election. >> what we've done is really made changes to make sure that no one takes advantage of the platform. so we're putting precautions in place to really make sure that going forward that everyone is saf safe. >> reporter: developers will be wondering what that means for them. you know they count on that user data to be able to develop those third-party apps so many of us use. so that will be some of the buzz. developers are also talking about augmented reality and a new tech set to be announced in

the coming days. but a lot of the breakout sessions here are related to privacy and user data, from creating secure products to also rethinking privacy among the users. we will be here at 10:00 when mark zuckerberg's keynote speech begins. in san jose, kris sanchez for "today in the bay." >> kris will be watching that facebook stock as it holds that conference in san jose. the creator of whatsapp says he's going to quit his job at facebook. he's also on the board of directors there. also do watch apple. apple reports after the closing bell. california supreme court made a huge ruling on monday over who can be considered a contractor or a gig worker. this could affect uber workers, door dash delivery people, that kind of thing. the court said if you do what's in your job that matches the company's total mission, you're a worker, not a contractor. so, for instance, this young woman parking cars for a car parking company can't be considered a contractor because

the whole point of her job matches the company's mission. on the other hand, if you're a plumber called in to fix a leak in an office, of course you're a contractor. the company isn't in the business of fixing leaks. the president has delayed imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum from the european union, canada and mexico. germany and the eu have threatened to slap new taxes on our products if we go ahead and put a tariff on their steel. jeff bezos says he will spend a billion dollars each year of his own money to support his rocket program blue origin. he can afford that, he's worth $130 billion. he can't even spend that in a life time. he says what am i going to do with all that money, have a second dinner out every night? can you imagine spending $1 billion a year and there's no way to spend all that money? >> i can't imagine, but i

wouldn't mind trying. >> there's a lot of needy charities. nonprofits. so i want to tell you about this story. mountain lion researchers are back at it. this morning conservation biologists are joining forces with berkeley. the new team sent out this map and it caught our attention. do you see your neighborhood right here? it's kind of hard to see, but if you look closely there. now, someone reported seeing the mountain lion. here's great news for you. researchers say all the lions they were tracking actually managed to survive those fires last fall, so good news there. if you live in the south bay, soon you won't have to travel far to enjoy redwoods. work is starting today on a new park called the bear creek redwoods open preserve. it's just south of los gatos. eventually plans are to build the 1400 redwood park protecting a lot of trees.

it should be open next spring. new video that got us laughing in the newsroom this morning very early when we come in. get this, it's a dolphin versus a paddleboarder. watch it. it's amazing. yeah, it's going viral over the weekend. a group of eight or nine dolphins swimming towards a man. it actually jumps up you see here and just knocks him off, bam, right there, his board. he tells an australian television station, hats off to the dolphin. >> if you look at it, it does look like -- look, watch. hey, you're in my way, move. hey, move. thank you. >> and he turns and everything. >> yeah. >> does that knock the wind out of you? you think? >> sharks, dolphins. you got checked. on porpoise.

>> our barometer is if kari laughs. >> hey, i'm really happy about this weather. not quite laughing yet, but we will get some sunshine and highs reaching into the low 70s today. how about that. let's get a look at our day planner in oakland. it's going to be in the low 50s. new video. all right, 51 degrees this morning at 8:00 in oakland and at noon 62 degrees. it will be a little warmer today than it was yesterday and we'll get some sunshine. seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen and does show warmer air the next several days. as we head over toward livermore, getting the kids up and ready for school. they need long sleeves and pants for the start of the day, but they may be shedding those layers because look at how warm it gets by the time they get out of school. it will be in the upper 60s, heading up to 72 degrees. 63 today in san francisco.

santa rosa expect a high of 74 and 72 in palo alto. so as we get a look at our forecast for tonight -- no, that was yesterday, wrong one. so we're going to see a few clouds moving in, especially if you're planning to head over toward the sierra. watching out for those showers and thunderstorms that could fire up again today. yesterday they did have some hail there. let me know what you're doing for the weekend. the weekend forecast is coming up in about 20 minutes. if i get it between now and then, you may see it right here. and then we're going to continue on with some beautiful weather looking at some mid to upper 70s in the forecast. sunshine, not a drop of rain here, and then as we go into next week we'll continue on with mid-60s in san francisco. now, mike, you were saying all the earlier crashes have cleared. >> that's right, kari, and that's great news. in fact much of the overnight road work has cleared as well so we're left with green sensors. this is a very pleasant 5:20,

almost 5:21 on this tuesday morning. in the south county a smooth drive here. the summit looks great. both sides of the summit are moving nicely. contra costa county moves smoothly down into concord and pleasant hill. over in san jose, a nice easy drive. this is 101, showing why the sensors are green in the south bay. over here, 580 recovered very nicely after the earlier crash cleared from the dublin interchange just about 20 minutes ago, so that's a smooth flow of traffic already back there coming through dublin and entering toward pleasanton and 680. oakland shows a little slowing near high street but no major problems. mostly as folks are heading up the hill. the bay bridge toll plaza shows a very light backup right now. we'll check it in about ten minutes because the metering lights should be on boy then. back to you. coming up next on "today in the bay" an alarming uptick. new this morning, we investigate

nearby. the developer telling the paper they want to be a part of all this new development. some perspective, however. others have proposed projects, then pulled out because of high construction costs. 5:25. new this morning, you'll notice lots of construction at san francisco state university over the next couple of years. a new housing complex and a new media center will go up just blocks apart. they're still figuring out how many students could live in the new building, but the paper says students could move in by 2020. new this morning, a spike in the number of reported sexual assaults in the military. the pentagon says sexual assault reports increased by 10% last year. at the same time, the overall number of reported incidents, nearly half of what it was in 2008. among the military branches, the marine corps saw the largest increase in the number of reports. well, the race for california governor is pretty expensive. this morning we're taking a look at just how much money each candidate has so far. lieutenant governor gavin newsom

good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall into this conversation of just a beautiful tuesday. >> not only is it a beautiful day, but we've got a lot of sports going on around the bay area, so on both sides of the bay, the east bay and san francisco, we are going to see some very busy afternoon into the evening. if you're going to the pelicans game at the warriors, it's going to be 59 degrees. nice and cool, a lot of sunshine. if you're going to at&t park, we also have clear skies but make sure you're wearing lots of layers. it's going to be breezy out there. the winds picking up to about 20 miles an hour and it will drop back into the mid-50s. as we get a look at the weekend forecast, let me know what's going on. that's coming up in about seven minutes. we'll take a look at that coming up in about seven minutes. mike says there's a big change now at the bay bridge. >> big change but not a big

surprise. we have the backup which just formed. actually it just finished -- not even filled in yet. i've been seeing this build. fastrak lane backed up first. we see the cash lanes or the less frequent drivers, they are not really driving as much today. we'll show you the approach through the maze no problems right now. east shore freeway great coming off the carquinez bridge. c the walnut creek interchange no problems all the way down into the south bay. just a little build for the tri-valley. we'll track that with live shots. but i want to show you fremont where you do at least have traffic, laura, back to you. for the past few weeks san francisco leaders worked on fine tuning the scooter laws. you see them everywhere, on sidewalks, maybe even run into them. today the rubber hits the road for transportation leaders. they are debating new rules for dockless scooter companies.

pete is live with what's next for what some are calling controversial rides. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. you mentioned that timeline a few weeks ago, right? a few weeks ago you had the city attorney issuing a cease and desist letter saying they would need a permit in order to carry out business in san francisco. driving around this morning, we're not seeing a lot of those scooters, if any scooters, lying around, around the city. but they're going to talk about a permit program for these companies as far as doing business in the city moving forward. it's going to be a two-year pilot program called the power scooter share program. now, it limits to only five e-scooter permits, only five companies at a given time can operate in the city. each company can have no more than 500 scooters, which means no more than 2,500 scooters could be in san francisco at a given time. also it would be a violation for any of those scooters in the

city that are not permanent. as far as fees go, it would be a $5,000 application fee per company. they'd also have to pay a $25,000 annual fee. here's another fee that's interesting, a $10,000 maintenance fee to cover any property damage as well as storage of any illegally parked scooters. i want to mention that sfmta has companies that have posed some issues for the city. they have a desire to comply with the program whenever it's rolled out, but it will be discussed further during the sfmta board meeting set to take place in the city at 1:00 p.m. >> all right, keep following, thanks, pete. 5:33. new this morning, violence in the east bay. a shooting leaves two people dead. this in oakland. this happened on 89th avenue near international boulevard. officers found the body there a little before midnight, but right now they're not saying exactly when that shooting may

have happened. we're working to get more details like the suspect's description. of course we'll pass that along as soon as we get that information. people trying to get around downtown concord want a traffic nightmare to be over. last week we told you with that fire that destroyed a luxury apartment complex. this is video that we shot overnight. some of the progress the crews are making trying to tear down that building. two of the city's main roads, willow pass road and concord boulevard, still closed. police tell the "east bay times" they're still working on a timeline to reopen the roads. focusing on rebuilding after the fire. santa rosa leaders really want to expand the city's new and streamlined permit process for housing. the aftermath of last year's firestorm, councilmembers approved fast track permits to allow homeowners to rebuild. now leaders want to expand the areas outside the burn zone. that measure would last for three years. some of the concern about the building frenzy is that it's too

much deregulation. the felon whose case sparked an overhaul of california's cash bail system remains in custody, but today supporters plan to be there when he receives his own bail hearing. kenneth humphrey was arrested after allegedly robbing someone of $5 and a bottle of cologne at his senior home. he couldn't afford to pay his bail. based on his case, an appeals court ruled judges must consider financial circumstances in bail hearings. the hearing gets under way at 9:00 a.m. in san francisco. 5:35, continuing coverage of the golden state killer case. some say a recent courtroom appearance may be an act of what he was doing. you can see joseph deangelo looking weary as slumped as we entered the courtroom. they say it's just deangelo acting and meant to create sympathy and even doubt. >> it wouldn't surprise me if he

wasn't trying to play everybody. playing his own lawyers, playing the courtroom, playing the judge and potentially playing the jury pool. >> according to neighbors, that image that we've seen in the courtroom is a far cry from the man they know. deangelo is an avid bike rider and that he generally is very physically active. at 5:36, a sad story to tell you about. a san francisco woman is desperately pleading for the return of her stolen dog. her 13-year-old blind and deaf pug was snatched from outside the whole foods on market street, very popular location, a lot of people there. she says it happened when she went inside to grab a cup of coffee. take a look at this surveillance video in fact. a different woman unties the dog and just walks away. lee says her beloved dog won't survive much longer without his eye cancer medication. >> i just want him home.

i know he needs me as much as i need him. he's my best friend. i feel like my heart is ripped apart in pieces. >> lee is offering a $5,000 reward for his safe return. we now know the stranded sailboat in pacifica won't be removed until at least tomorrow afternoon. a group planned to remove it last night but high surf prevented that from happening. the boat ran ashore saturday night and is still on the beach this morning. four people were onboard going to san francisco to san diego when the engine stopped and the boat drifted ashore. 5:37. looking at a calm, quiet oracle arena this morning, but come tonight it's going to be rocking. it's because steph curry could be back in action. he is expected to play tonight against the pelicans. warriors coach steve kerr said curry looked good during practice, but they're going to have to put some restrictions on

him if he plays. if you didn't know, curry has been out almost five weeks with an injured knee. you've likely heard the saying what goes around comes around but we'll try not to say that too loudly in front of the shark fans. >> it was another overtime thriller but this one ends with a thud at the shark tank. sharks came home to screaming fans an a double overtime came two win in vegas and tied last night's game at 3 after being down 3-1. this time the golden knights scoring that golden goal. sharks players there's no reason to lose home. >> i believe our game is there. i think anyone in here would tell you that. on the wrong end of it tonight. we'll take a look like we always do, regroup, recover and be ready to go. >> the golden knights lead 2-1 with game four tomorrow night at s.a.p. >> go sharks! again, those overtimes, they're exciting. but i stay up late for this.

over here on the south bay, we'd like a little calmer drive and that's what we're seeing. maybe a lot of folks stayed up to see that so they're not hitting the road because the tri-valley, the peninsula, getting across the bay on the bridges looks great right now. no major problems really, a little slowing 101 through san martinez. right on schedule for that portion of 101 itself. zooming really quickly over toward the concord area, we were talking about the closure still around the fire scene there. so remember that willow pass road and concord boulevard are both closed between grant and mira vista. that's not something they welcome. there's the golden gate bridge. look at that easy traffic and a beautiful view of that span as well as that sun coming up. that's nice. >> looking good. >> looking ahead to the weekend too. that's looking good as well. >> that's a reminder that the days are getting longer. you can make plans to get out there and stay out a little later in the evening as well.

it's going to be warming up too. here's a look at our saturday forecast. the coast will be up to 70 degrees for the high. the bay at 76. and 80 for the inland areas. it's going to still be really nice on sunday with mostly sunny skies and comfortable weather around the bay area. if you're planning to head to the tri-valley this weekend, enjoying some time out at the vineyards and also just going for a walk around downtown livermore, it's going to be in the upper 70s on friday. a little bit warm during the middle of the afternoon, but nice and comfortable for the rest of the weekend with some mid-70s. heading out of dotown, it's goi to be upper 70s on saturday. sunday 73 degrees. also mostly sunny skies there. and for the sierra and heavenly, chance of rain on friday as you're heading up. coming back on sunday, highs in the mid-60s and some mostly dry weather with some sunshine. we'll take a look at today's temperature trend for san jose coming up in about three minutes. >> sounds good, thanks, kari.

encampments. needles, hazardous material and human waste are becoming more and more common. they argue workers simply don't have proper training or even the necessary equipment. one homeless advocate says he tends to agree with the argument. >> there's needles they could be poked with, and then that's, you know, possibly aids or hepatitis. you know, obviously lack of bathroom facilities. >> caltrans so far is not commenting specifically on the grievance, but the agency says that the cost to clear homeless camps last year rose more than 30%. 5:45. happening today, contra costa county leaders get an update surrounding the cleanup at the hunters point naval shipyard. the navy now says a private cleanup company may have faked years of data in its collection of radioactive soil. contra costa county supervisors fear contaminated soil ended up

in east bay landfills. they are not designed to hold radioactive material. the company insists all guidelines were followed properly. also happening today, in simple football terms, oakland leaders will huddle up to consider what can only be considered a serious hail mary. councilmembers expected to debate whether to file a lawsuit to try to block the raiders from moving to las vegas. it's a tall task considering crews are hard at work building the raiders' future home. today supervisors are debating legal options which some believe may lead to losing the team even before the raiders' planned 2020 stadium opening. 5:46 for you right now. "the new york times" says that it has a list of questions the special counsel will ask president trump. >> scott mcgrew, that's provoked a strong reaction from president trump. >> he's tweeted, laura, about it several times this morning and he's angry. "the times" got a list certainly after it was apparently given to the trump legal team. while there are questions about his family's interactions with

russians, the major focus is the president's motivation to fire then fbi director james comey. the president tweeted this this morning. it would seem very hard to obstruct justice for a crime that never happened. witch hunt. now, this is very important. the president is wrong and this goes to the very essence of his legal trouble. it is perfectly possible the president is totally innocent, that he never colluded in any way, but you can obstruct an investigation even if you're innocent. and the president has prima facia with his own words. he told the russian ambassador he fired james comey to stop the russian investigation. then he said the very same thing on television to nbc's lester holt. it was such a blatant admission of obstruction that "saturday night live" did this. >> and you're just admitting

that? >> uh-huh. >> but that's obstruction of justice. >> sure, okay. >> wait, so did i get him? is this all over? >> i hate to use comedy to illustrate such a serious point, but that did it really well. the white house says an nbc news report that chief of staff john kelly called the president idiot is not true. white house insiders say kelly considers himself a savior to the country, protecting america against an erratic and unhinged president. kelly publicly denies that report. in fact he calls the quote bs. we have reported many times about the tension between trump and kelly. many of the pictures that we have of kelly are like this or face palming. this is not the first time that a highly placed official has been accused of calling the president names. you'll remember former secretary of state rex tillerson reportedly called the president a moron, something he would neither confirm nor deny. with a lot going on in washington this morning, just a ton, we'll follow it on twitter. you can follow me, i'

yesterday. up to 77 in concord, antioch 76 degrees, 71 in san jose. san francisco 63 and santa rosa 74. as we get a look outside, you're getting dressed this morning, you do need layers because we've had a lot of 40s and low 50s, so a jacket and short sleeves needed, but later on today it will be comfortable with short sleeves and pants. also don't forget the sunglasses. time to clean those off and make sure they're ready to go for today. as we head through the rest of the forecast, we stay dry. heads up i've been tracking this little disturbance that's moving there across the sierra that will bring another chance of rain today while we stay dry and we'll see temperatures in the mid to upper 70s for the inland area the rest of the week. the weekend looks nice today. san francisco stays in the 60s. >> it's a late start for a tuesday but we're looking at mild for the south bay, a little slowing for the tri-valley. look over here, 880 and 238 do start to build.

we could have the commute heading past the san mateo bridge. the bridge itself westbound, yeah, a lot of traffic flow. there's some flashing lights. i'll check what's going on midspan along the flat section westbound. you might want to choose the dumbarton bridge if you have a choice. the bay bridge is a good choice. the berkeley curve moves well. if you're driving out of the antioch area, highway 4 is jammed up. so if you're heading toward lafayette, contra costa county getting built up. if you take the 4 route, it adds 5, maybe 10 minutes. back to you. something to keep in mind during your commute to work. speeding is just not worth it. the new research on just how deadly speeding can be. and happening now, the jurors in the bill cosby case could be identified today. last week the group of 12 convicted bill cosby of three counts of aggravated indecent assault. he could face up to 30 years in prison. plus the threat of fire is keeping thousands of people from

we're off to a cool and clear start to the day. of course we'll have a pleasant day ahead for us. kari has the full forecast in five minutes. >> speaking of driving, your drive is about to get a bit longer. caltrans is paving and repairing a ten-mile stretch of i-80 in contra costa county and won't be done until november. it is happening on both sides of the freeway between i-80/highway 4 interchange. some lanes will be closed monday through friday. don't be surprised if you see more of this throughout the week. nbc bay area sky ranger overhead as crews inspected the golden gate bridge. look how high up they were. could you do that job? they rappelled down the tower looking for cracks and basic wear and tear. the good news is the bridge is in good shape. >> i think it's pretty safe to say we're all guilty of speeding, even if it's just one mile over, but this story might make you rethink this if you're

running late for work next time. new research shows that higher speeds only gets you there a few minutes sooner, but there can be deadly consequences. about 40,000 people died in car accidents last year. a quarter of those were speed-related. now, this is something that a lot of people have been talking about. ten states allow drivers to hit 75 miles an hour. texas allows 85 miles an hour. the insurance institute for highway safety says each 5-mile-per-hour increase results in a 8% increase in deadly accidents. a texas state trooper's speed is one of many factors in serious crashes. >> what's the most common excuse or explanation. >> i do not remember. i hear that more times or often. >> look at that right there. law enforcement officers say distracted driving is still the biggest threat. you might notice more homeless in berkeley depending

on the outcome of a big vote today. the berkeley emergency storm shelter on 9th street is open until the end of the month, but today the berkeley city council is voting to keep it open even longer. it's a warehouse the city owns that has enough space for 90 people. berkeley has almost 1,000 homeless people living there. also new this morning, we're just a few days away from a huge pot and trade show in sacramento. it's supposed to happen this weekend at cal expo where the state fair is held. thousands of people expected to attend, catch performances from some pretty big name rappers. cal expo hired more than 330 police officers for security, but organizers need state and city approval. the city still needs to sign off. people planning to attend aren't happy. >> they should just let it go and let us do us. >> it's not clear if marijuana sales will be allowed.
